Facial recognition (脸部识别) cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people use their technology to unlock their phones, open doors or pay quickly, but there is a problem-many people are wearing masks. What a hassle.
Now, the companies have improved technology. Facial recognition technology can now know people even if they are wearing a mask. Beijing-based tech company. Hanwang has announced new software (软件) which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks. Engineering Technology (E&T) reported. What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes. Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. As we get older, he said, our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same even if we put on weight.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It’s about public safety. For example, you don’t need to take an ID card, which can be lost or stolen. It also means that virus (病毒) isn’t spread by touching things, said NEC’s Shiya Takeshima. “Touchless check has become very important to COVID-19,” he said to Reuters. “We hope to do something for safety and peace of mind.” More than that, facial like recognition can be used to fight crime. “It can tell criminals and terrorists,” said Huang Lei, one of Hanwang’s leaders. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security (安全等级高的) settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force and other governments.
Huang talks about one big weakness of this technology. “It fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost,” Huang said to E&T.

Don’t you think that we have lost enough? We have lost most of out natural resources (自然资源), and now we are going to lose animals!
Natural competition happens when species (物种) compete for food and living places. An example of an animal species affected by this is the dinosaur (恐龙).
We have caused animals to be in danger too. The pollution that we create destroys many animals’ living places like the sea turtle. Over hunting (过度捕猎) is also a huge threat (威胁). When people over hunt, they catch too many of an animal species, so either not many animals are left, or no animals are left at all. Examples of some overhunted animals are the Bali tiger. Cutting down trees is also very dangerous for animals. It leaves them with no place to live, such as many species in the Amazon Rainforest.
Many organizations such as WWF (World Wildlife Fund) are doing something to protect animals and the environment. They try to protect the living places of many endangered animals. They do studies on the species and they educate people. Zoos also help. They let many endangered species live in a healthy and safe environment. Sometimes zoos might even let an endangered animal go back into the wild to try to raise population numbers again.
Not only the big organizations but also you can help. You can give away money or you can volunteer, or you can do the simplest thing of all-CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!

A. The pollution. B. Natural competition. C. The waste of food. D. The less living space.

One day, a little girl found a cocoon. She could tell that a butterfly was going to be born. She decided to wait for the butterfly to come out of the cocoon.
She watched it for hours, suddenly the butterfly stopped moving, it got stuck (卡住了). The girl wanted to help the butterfly get out. She went home and got a pair of scissors. As she cut and opened the cocoon, the butterfly then easily came out. However, its body was swollen (肿大的) and its wings were very small. The girl still thought that she helped the butterfly. She sat there for another several hours and waited for its wings to grow. However, it didn’t happen. The butterfly was unable to fly, and for the rest of its life, it could only move around with a large body and little wings.
The girl thought she was helping, but actually she was hurting it. When the butterfly broke free of its cocoon by itself, it was time for its body to get smaller and its wings to get stronger. So it could fly soon.
It’s true that struggling (挣扎) will make you stronger. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were allowed to go through our life without any problems, it would weaken us. We wouldn’t be as strong as what we could have been, and we could never fly.

1. My brother has been in an organization in ________ European country.
A. / B. an C. a
2. —Where are Tom and Michael?
—They ________ the reading room.
A. have gone to B. have been to C. were
【答案】A
根据问句“Where are Tom and Michael?” 故选A。
3. — Look! My mother ________ a new coat for me.
— Wow, it looks nice on you!
A. has made B. is playing C. makes
【答案】A
根据“Wow, it looks nice on you!” 故选A。
4. —Would you like to go to Eryilou?
—No. I’ve been there twice. I’d like to go ________.
A. nowhere else B. else nowhere C. somewhere else
根据“No. I’ve been there twice”可知,回答者已经去过两次了,所以想去其他地方。故选C。
5. Can you imagine that ________ little ants can eat ________ many big worms.
A. so; so B. such; so C. such; such
根据“little ants”可知,little意为“小的”,不表示数量少,所以第一空用such,修饰其后名词ants;根据“many big worms”可知,many意为“许多的”,表示数量多,所以第二空用so,so many“如此多”。故选B。
6. —Please ________ the TV. The baby is sleeping over there.
—Sorry, I’ll do it at once.
A. turn off B. turn on C. turn up
【答案】A
turn off关闭;turn on打开;turn up调高(音量)。根据“The baby is sleeping over there”可知,为了不打扰睡觉的婴儿,应该关闭电视,故选A。
7. —I’m sorry, Mr. Li. I failed the exam.
—It doesn’t matter. But you should ________ the same mistake next time.
A. avoid B. accept C. repeat
【答案】A
avoid避免;accept接受;repeat重复;根据“I failed the exam.”以及“the same mistake next time”可知,此处说的是要避免犯同样的错误,故选A。
8. —I went to a small village to be a volunteer during the summer holidays.
—________ wonderful experience!
A. What B. How C. What a
可知,此处考查感叹句,结合“I went to a small village to be a volunteer during the summer holidays.”
9. Time waits for no man. ________ you lose it, you will never get it back.
A. Until B. Once C. Before
根据前句“Time waits for no man.”
10. ________ the “Double Reduction” policy(双减政策), we have less homework and more outdoor activities.
A. Thanks to B. Thanks for C. As a result
【答案】A
根据题干中“we have less homework and more outdoor activities.”
11. —Will you go shopping tonight?
—If you go, ________.
A. so I will B. so will I C. so do I
so I will我的确如此;so will I我也会;so do I我也一样。根据“If you go,”可知,此处是指你去我也去,可排除A选项。
12. —The little boy was born _______, and he can’t hear anything.
—I’m sorry to hear that.
A. deaf B. blind C. lovely
【答案】A
