A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels, I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

7. What ’s the best title of the passage?

The word tsunami, meaning “harbour wave”, is a combination of the Japanese characters “tsu” which means harbour and “nami” which means the wave. Tsunamis are commonly known as “killer waves”.
A tsunami is usually a huge number of ocean waves which get stronger as they move along. It's caused by pressure in the atmosphere (大气层), a volcanic explosion, an underwater earthquake or a landslide or even a meteor hitting the ocean.
They have happened all over the world including Greece, Italy, Venezuela, Great Britain, Canada, Portugal, Indonesia, Chile, the USA, New Zealand and by far most occurrences have been in Japan. That’s why the name comes from the Japanese language.
Tsunamis are not like normal tidal waves and the water from them flows straight and with unbelievable power. Typical waves are where the water flows in circles. They can travel at the speed of up to 800 kilometres per hour without losing energy as they go along.
The tsunami that hit Hawaii in 1946 was going almost as fast as a jet plane. That's seriously fast. How big do you think a normal wave gets at a beach? Well, it is normally about 1 metre high. Now a tsunami wave can reach dozens of metres in height. But the highest recorded one was at the 1958 Lituya Bay mega tsunami with a recorded height of 524 metres.
The Asian tsunami of 2004 in the Indian Ocean is considered the deadliest tsunami ever, which was caused by an earthquake with the energy of 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs (原子弹)! This brought with it unbelievably destructive waves hitting the coastlines of more than ten countries, killing more than 290,000 people and wiping_out cities, causing huge losses.
8. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. What a tsunami is and how it happens. B. How a tsunami influences people.
C. Why a tsunami is so powerful. D. How to prevent a tsunami.
9. Which country has the most tsunamis?
A. Greece. B. Indonesia. C. Japan. D. New Zealand.
10. What can we know about the mega tsunami in Lituya Bay?
A. It happened in 1946. B. It brought the highest waves on record.
C. It influenced more than ten countries. D. It has been the most destructive tsunami up to now.
11. What does the underlined phrase “wiping out” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Destroying completely. B. Beautifying gradually.
C. Influencing slowly. D. Building quickly.
D
The World Health Organization warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. Nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating as well as lighting.
These findings show that the use of deadly fuels in inefficient stoves, space heaters or lights is to blame for many of these deaths.
WHO officials say indoor pollution leads to early deaths from stroke, heart and lung disease, childhood pneumonia and lung cancer. Women and girls are the main victims. These diseases can often result from the burning of solid fuels. These fuels include wood, coal, animal waste, crop waste and charcoal.
The United Nations found that more than 95 percent of households in sub-Saharan Africa depend on solid fuels for cooking. It says huge populations in India, China and Latin American countries, such as Guatermala and Peru, are also at risk.
Nigel Brace is a professor of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. He says researchers are developing good cook-stoves and other equipment to burn fuels in a more efficient way. There are already multiple technologies available for use in clean fuels. There is really quite an effective and reasonably low-cost alcohol stove made by Dometic (a Sweden-based company) that is now being tested out. LPG (Liquefield Petroleum Gas) cook is obviously widely available and efforts are under way to make those efficient. Another interesting development is electric induction stoves. WHO experts note that some new, safe and low-cost technologies that could help are already available. In India, you can buy an induction stove for about $8.00. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $1.00.
But this, the agency says, is just a start. It is urging developing countries to use cleaner fuels and increase access to cleaner and more modern cooking and heating appliances/devices.
12. What does the indoor pollution mainly result from?
A. Poisonous fuels. B. High technology. C. Space heaters. D. Solar energy.
13. How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By showing differences. B. By describing a process.
C. By making a list. D. By analyzing data.
14. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Indoor pollution results in some deaths.
B. Most of the deaths are in developing countries.
C. The solid fuels are used in more effective ways.
D. There is no indoor pollution in developed countries.
15. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. LPG cooks are being tested out. B. Alcohol stoves are widely used now.
C. Electric induction stoves are expensive. D. Solar lamps are very cheap in Africa.

A By showing differences.

【答案】Dear friends and distinguished judges,
I’m contestant NO. 12. I’m privileged to stand here and deliver my speech themed on “saving our planet”.
Our planet is facing numerous challenges, such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change, which have led to the destruction of ecosystems and the loss of biodiversity. These problems are largely caused by human activities, including overconsumption, industrialization, and the burning of fossil fuels.
To save our planet, we must take immediate action. First, we should reduce our carbon footprint by adopting sustainable practices, such as using public transportation and recycling waste. Second, we need to protect natural resources by supporting renewable energy sources. Lastly, we must raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and encourage others to join the cause.
Let us remember that our planet is our home, and it is our responsibility to protect it. Together, we can make a difference and create a sustainable future for generations to come.
Thank you!
