When you’re shopping for new shoes, what catches your eye? That’s what Cherry wants to know. She’s a shoe designer. She has designed shoes for athletes and many others. Now she teaches students to follow in her footsteps.
Cherry started drawing shoes in the fifth grade. Her interest in drawing led her to a high school for art and design. There, she met a classmate, who had gone on to work for a famous sports company. Colors, materials, shapes, a lot goes into designing a pair of shoes. But Cherry cares two things most. “How is it going to allow someone to perform at their highest level?” She also thinks about what she wants someone to feel when wearing the shoes. “If I want someone to feel like Batman…maybe my color palette (调色板) is all black,” she says.
Today, Cherry works for a program called S. E. E. D.that teaches people about the shoe design. One of its goals is diversity (多样性). S. E. E. D.opens the door to students who might not have chance in design. S. E. E. D wants to make sure everyone has a chance to do design, even if they usually don’t get the chance. One way they do this is by welcoming students who might not usually get chance. “I know the power that one person can have to change someone’s life,” she says. “And I want to be that for other people.”
Her advice to kids is simple. “Follow the thing that makes you smile.”

Lin Guo’er likes to wear some lipstick and a sweet smile in live broadcasts (直播), you might think she is selling beauty products online. But then you see what her hands are busy doing — thanks to her great skills, a broken diesel generator (柴油发电机) is brought back to life.
Lin is a vlogger. With her “repair shows”, she has gotten millions of fans. Some like to call her “mechanic Mulan”. But how did the girl learn to repair so many different machines all by herself?
Lin grew up in a small village in Yunnan. The village is often hit by power cuts (停电). Many people keep a diesel generator in their homes. They turn to it whenever the power is out. Lin developed a strong interest in this “magical machine” from an early age. It led her to finally study engineering in college.
One day, Lin came across a popular short video about her hometown. The girl decided to make her own videos. Her first public video showed her building a bamboo house and repairing a generator. The video was not as popular as Lin had expected, but she didn’t give up. The girl went on to repair different kinds of machines for the villagers. And she has continued to make videos while fixing them.
Sometimes, she gets stuck and has to ask for help. Over the years, as Lin’s mechanical skills have become better and better, her videos have also got more and more attention. Many fans say it is relaxing to watch an old machine slowly become “young” again in Lin’s hands.
Some villagers ask Lin why she didn’t stay in the city and find an office job, just like many other college graduates do. The girl says that she loves her hometown. I saw her at the play and because of her invitation, I sat beside her. “Do you remember the first time I saw you? You asked me to have lunch,” she asked.
Did I remember?
It was twenty years ago. I was living in a tiny flat and making little money.
After reading my book, she wrote to ask if I’d have a chat with her and give her a lunch at Foyot’s. Foyot’s was such an expensive restaurant that I never went there before, but I had £80 and a lunch shouldn’t cost over £15. So I agreed.
Still, I was shocked to see the prices. They were much higher than I expected, but her words comforted me, “I never eat more than one thing for lunch.”
“Don’t say that!” I answered generously (慷慨地).
“I never eat more than one thing, except a little salmon (三文鱼) ” Well, a beautiful salmon just came in Foyot’s. I ordered it for my guest. And the waiter asked if she’d have something else.
“No, I never eat more than one thing, unless you had caviar (鱼子酱),” My heart sank (下沉), but I told the waiter to bring it. For myself, I chose the cheapest dish.
She talked happily while I was wondering whether I had enough money to pay the bill. If no, it’d be awful to borrow from my guest, and I’d say my money was stolen. It’d be worse if she had no enough money either. Then I had to leave my watch here.
She finished eating. “Coffee?” I asked. “No more than one thing, except ice cream and coffee.” I didn’t care now, ordering one for her and another for myself. Then a terrible thing happened. The waiter came with huge peaches, and my guest took one.
At last, the bill came. I knew she thought me mean (吝啬的) when I left only £3 for the waiter as the tip, and there was nothing in my pocket.
“Follow my example,” she said as we left. “Never eat more than one thing for lunch.”
“I’ll do better,” I replied. “I’ll eat nothing for dinner tonight.”
“Humorous!” she cried, jumping into a taxi.
I had my revenge (报仇). Today she weighed 294 pounds.

Firefighting (消防) is an important job to keep people safe and help stop fires from damaging (毁坏) too much property (财产).
There are many important parts to be a firefighter. First of all firefighters have to be strong enough to do their work, so they need to have physical training, such as carrying heavy objects, going up many stairs (楼梯), and working for a long time. Firefighters also have to know the latest skills in fighting fires, so they need to go through regular training to keep themselves and others safe. Anyway, the most important part of being a firefighter is to work as a team. They have to work together to stop fires!
Firefighting is very stressful. Firefighters never know when a fire or other emergency (紧急情况) is going to happen, so they have to be ready at all times. Even in the middle of the night, firefighters have to be able to wake up quickly when the alarm (警报) goes off.
Firefighters don’t just fight house fires. They also help people who are in accidents. For example they use their special tools to help get people out of the cars if they’re stuck (卡住). In some places, firefighters also have to be prepared to help people who are sick or injured (受伤的). These firefighters might be trained as nursing staff.
