My phone beeped as I closed the passenger door. I knew that the text was from my friend. Robin, a poet. And I did not want to read it.
Robin had recently submitted her manuscript to several publishers and she expected a response from one soon. From my view, her writing life was already charmed: work at a celebrated workshop and publication in literary journals. I was waiting to hear back from some book consultants. Three weeks had passed since I sent them some manuscript pages. I'd returned to my state of frustration(挫败)and the familiar misery.
I needed my phone for navigation, so I had no choice but to look at the screen. “I have news.” It was Robin.“Good news…" My insides shook as I sat waiting for my husband. Can we escape?
As I longed for some of Robin's magic to wear off on me, I had to figure out how to respond to her text, how to be a friend. "Is it about your manuscript?” "Yes!" she answered." We can talk later but I have a book coming out next year! I'm in shock!!!"" I cried, quietly. I dug deep to find the words friendship called for -"wonderful,""amazing,""extremely talented." But as I reread, each word felt pathetic. This time, jealousy had put a valuable friendship at risk. To overcome it, I had to face that Robin had achieved something I could not. None of my excuses - the demands of motherhood, financial pressure, ""I’m not good at this"- seemed to hold up anymore.
Two days later, I wrote to the consulting company again. They responded:"The writing is really good." I was overjoyed. Robin and I are still stairs apart on the writing-success ladder but all four of our feet are moving upward. After her book was released, she and I met over beers. I asked about her writing process; how did she create her book? A clue: it wasn't magic.
4. Why was the author unwilling to read the text?
A. Because she was too busy to read it. B. Because she knew Robin's response well.
C. Because she feared Robin's good news. D. Because she didn't know it was from Robin.
5. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Robin's achievements in her writing life. B. The huge gap between Robin and the author.
C. Robin's contribution to the author's success. D. The author's feelings about Robin's literature.
6. What does the underlined word "pathetic" in paragraph 4 mean?
A Delightful. B. Astonishing. C. Confusing. D. Useless.
7. What can we infer about Robin's book from the last paragraph?
A. It is about magic. B. It took great efforts.
C. It made the author jealous. D. It was an immediate success.

With advanced communication technologies making the iconic British red telephone boxes expendable (可抛弃的), a US firm is all set to bring them back to use. Call boxes would be changed into mini-offices for workers on-the-go and will offer free coffee to subscribers (认购者).
Bar Works Ine’s chief executive Jonathan Black, a Briton living in New York, said that his company will renew telephone boxes with fully functional printers, scanners, 25-inch screens and Wi-Fi. Bar Works specializes in offering bar-themed work stations in prime locations, charging customers with a monthly subscription in return for free access to the business and office supplies. The company plans to operate in a similar manner, offering British customers with monthly memberships to “Pod Works” for £19.99 ($29).
The company will refit telephone boxes in five major British cities and has already rented and changed 15 old call boxes in London and Edinburgh. As expected, they are coming into use by the public in the coming months. “Given the prime location, above all else, of the telephone boxes, the launch is expected to gain at least 10,000 members by the end of 2022. It’s an alternative to, say, Starbucks but obviously it provides you with total privacy.” said Black.
Thanks to mobile phones, the red telephone boxes have been effectively made expendable. According to a report by the Daily Mail, retired telephone boxes, especially those damaged deliberately, are sent to a “telephone box graveyard” of sorts, where they are restored to their former glory before being sold to collectors across the globe. Such is the demand for properly restored telephone boxes, that it is not uncommon for them to be sold for amounts as high as £10,000.
Despite its setback, in a recent survey, the British red telephone box, which was originally designed in 1920, was voted the greatest British design of all time.
8. What will the red telephone boxes be used for?
A. Mini coffee boxes. B. Leisure rooms for workers.
C. Mini-offices. D. Bar-themed call boxes.
9. What do you know about the renewed telephone boxes?
A. They will be equipped with office supplies.
B. They have been rented in five major British cities.
C. They will be put into use next year.
D. They offer as much privacy as Starbucks.
10. What is Black’s attitude towards the launch?
A. Doubtful. B. Confident. C. Cautious. D. Uncertain.
11. What’s the best title for this text?
A. The British red telephone boxes are disappearing.
B. The British red telephone boxes will be refit in the US.
C. The British red telephone boxes won a recent vote.
D. The British red telephone boxes will have a new role.
D
Several years ago, a worldwide heavy rain was predicted, but no one got prepared for what was to come. Then, some areas received over 100 mm of rain. Cars and trucks floated down the streets. Whole buildings were swept away. At least 225 people lost their lives, and millions became homeless.
The weather is always changing. Over the past few years, heavy rains have led to floods in many parts of the world. Droughts have taken place in Brazil and Australia. There have been heat waves in Europe which killed thousands. There have been more powerful hurricanes and tornadoes than ever before. In 2017 alone, the financial cost from global weather events was up to 340 billion dollars.
With more wild weather events happening, people couldn’t help asking questions: What is happening with the weather? And why? Is this natural, or our fault? The answer seems to be: a little of both. Wild weather is natural. But most scientists hold the same view that human activity has made the Earth warmer. It is this global warming that makes heat waves more likely. The higher temperatures also result in more water going into the air, which causes heavier and more frequent rain. Many scientists also believe global warming makes hurricanes and other storms stronger.
This means we’re likely to see more wild weather. “But we don’t have to just stand there and accept it,” says scientist Michael. He and other experts say we need to stop the Earth from getting warmer. We also need to be prepared, to do things that will help save lives.
12. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. A past weather event happened in some areas in the world.
B. Some facts are listed about the global warming.
C. A number of recent weather events happened over the world.
D. Wild weather is partly the result of human activity.
13. How does paragraph two develop?
A. By giving a lot of examples of recent wild weather events.
B. By describing a serious flood that once happened.
C. By predicting how the weather will change in a few years.
D. By comparing the former wild weather with what happened now
14 What does scientist Michael’s words mean?
A. People can not do anything to prevent wild weather.
B. If people stop global warming, the weather will be better.
C. It is too late to stop global warming.
D. People have to stand by and accept what will happen to us.
15. Where can you probably find the text?
A. In a tourist brochure B. In a research paper
C. In a science fiction D. In a nature magazine

It’s a joyful and stressful time of year in the United States for students and their families as they make decisions about where to attend college. Families often turn to rankings systems to help make a decision. ____16____
When I talk to families as a scholar of higher education, they’re often surprised that teaching excellence is not counted in rankings. ____17____
Emerging research suggests that courses in lower-ranked universities, on average, scored higher on teaching than courses in higher-ranked universities. ____18____ The absence of teaching excellence from the rankings is surprising given the link between high-quality teaching and student success. Quality teaching is one of the most important predictors of a wide range of college outcomes.
Rankings, however, are only one reason why a low value is placed on teaching in higher education. Administrators often don’t view teaching excellence as a way to increase enrolment (注册) or funding. ____19____ Research shows that the more time instructors spend on teaching, the lower their salary. What is the result? Many instructors continue to teach using traditional lectures, which lead to lower success rates.
____20____ Nevertheless, not much will change until schools with high-quality teaching are rewarded with more resources, higher rankings and increased enrolments. In the long term, universities, organisations that rank schools, and others should work to make teaching a valued, core part of the mission.
What should students and their families do? They should give strong consideration to universities where high-quality teaching is valued, even though the schools may be ranked lower.
A Higher education has achieved its true potential.
B. Therefore, it’s not highly valued in hiring or promotion.
C. Quality teaching has been an important reputation-building factor.
D. However, the rankings ignore a critical factor: the quality of teaching.
E. Efforts to improve teaching at the university level have recently emerged.
F. They’re even more surprised at how teaching is undervalued by universities.
G. In fact, universities often shift emphasis from teaching to other ranking factors.

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would finish in the bottom half. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end.
Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3,000-meter challenge in my city — at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or come close to winning.
I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their fanilies to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship.
It was a heartwarming program.I wanted to support it, so I showed up, paid the entrance fee, had a number pinned (把……别住) on my back, and moved over to the starting line. There, I waited with about 300 other runners for the race to begin. I was nervous. Would I be the last one to finish a race again? Could I even finish the race? I wondered.
Before long, someone spoke into a microphole, “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale (秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale. A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number that was on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so,and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.
Not expecting the award, I ran towards the starting line, never realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.
Paragraph 1:
Soon after, the race started.

Paragraph 2:
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.

A. Delightful. B. Astonishing. C. Confusing. D. Useless.
7. What can we infer about Robin's book from the last paragraph?
A. It is about magic. B. It took great efforts.
C. It made the author jealous. D. It was an immediate success.
C 5. B 6. D 7. B
根据第二段的“Robin had recently submitted her manuscript to several publishers and she expected a response from one soon. From my view, her writing life was already charmed: work at a celebrated workshop and publication in literary journals.(罗宾最近已经向几家出版商提交了她的手稿,她希望很快就能得到出版商的答复。在我看来,她的写作生涯已经很迷人了:在一个著名的研讨会上工作,在文学期刊上发表文章。)”和“Three weeks had passed since I sent them some manuscript pages. I'd returned to my state of frustration(挫败)and the familiar misery.(自从我寄给他们几页手稿以来,已经过去了三个星期。我又回到了我的沮丧和熟悉的痛苦状态。)”可知,Robin的写作生涯比作者顺利,比作者成就高,所以作者不愿意读短信是因为她害怕听见Robin的好消息。故选C。
【5题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段的“From my view, her writing life was already charmed: work at a celebrated workshop and publication in literary journals.(在我看来,她的写作生涯已经很迷人了:在一个著名的研讨会上工作,在文学期刊上发表文章。)”和“I'd returned to my state of frustration(挫败)and the familiar misery.(我又回到了我的沮丧和熟悉的痛苦状态。)”
根据第四段的“This time, jealousy had put a valuable friendship at risk. To overcome it, I had to face that Robin had achieved something I could not.(这一次,嫉妒把一段宝贵的友谊置于危险之中。为了克服它,我不得不面对罗宾完成了一些我做不到的事情。)”可知,作者说前面那些话都没有用,作者只能面对罗宾完成了一些我做不到的事,因此划线词pathetic的意思是“无用的”,即useless,故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“I asked about her writing process; how did she create her book? A clue: it wasn't magic.(我询问了她的写作过程;她是如何创作这本书的?提示:这不是魔法。)”可推断出Robin的书不是魔法变出来的,而是费了很大的努力才写出来的,故选B。

C They will be put into use next year.
C 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第一段第二句“Call boxes would be changed into mini-offices for workers on-the-go and will offer free coffee to subscribers(认购者).(电话亭将被改成为忙碌的员工的迷你办公室,并将为订户提供免费咖啡。)”
根据第二段第一句“Bar Works Inc’s chief executive Jonathan Black, a Briton living in New York, said that his company will renew telephone boxes with fully functional printers, scanners, 25-inch screens and Wi-Fi.(Bar Works公司的首席执行官乔纳森·布莱克是一位住在纽约的英国人,他说,他的公司将更新电话亭,配备全功能打印机、扫描仪、25英寸屏幕和Wi-Fi。)” 故选A。
根据第三段最后一句“It’s an alternative to, say, Starbucks but obviously it provides you with total privacy.(它是星巴克的替代品,但显然它为你提供了完全的隐私。)”
根据第一段“With advanced communication technologies making the iconic British red telephone boxes expendable(可抛弃的), a US firm is all set to bring them back to use. Call boxes would be changed into mini-offices for workers on-the-go and will offer free coffee to subscribers(认购者).(随着先进的通信技术使英国标志性的红色电话亭变得不再重要,一家美国公司准备重新使用它们。电话亭将被改成为忙碌的员工的迷你办公室,并将为订户提供免费咖啡。)”及全文可知,文章主要介绍在经历了时代进步后,原本已经废弃不用的红色电话亭即将有自己新的角色,它将成为迷你办公室,成为提供完全的隐私的星巴克替代品。所以“The British red telephone boxes will have a new role.(英国红色电话亭将有一个新角色。)”
D. By comparing the former wild weather with what happened now
14. What does scientist Michael’s words mean?
A 13. A 14. B 15. D

根据文章第二段“The weather is always changing.(天气总是在变化)”及第三段“With more wild weather events happening, people couldn’t help asking questions: What is happening with the weather? And why? Is this natural, or our fault? The answer seems to be: a little of both.(随着越来越多的恶劣天气事件的发生,人们不禁要问:天气怎么了?为什么?这是自然的,还是我们的错?答案似乎是:两者兼而有之)”可知,本文介绍了恶劣天气事件的增多及背后的原因及我们应该如何对待这一现象,文章应该出自自然杂志。故选D。

A. Higher education has achieved its true potential.
B. Therefore, it’s not highly valued in hiring or promotion.

根据空前内容“It’s a joyful and stressful time of year in the United States for students and their families as they make decisions about where to attend college. Families often turn to rankings systems to help make a decision.(对于美国的学生和他们的家人来说,这是一年中既快乐又紧张的时刻,因为他们要决定去哪里上大学。家庭经常求助于排名系统来帮助做决定。)”可知,美国的学生和家人们在决定去哪儿上大学时,经常求助于排名系统。而根据下文第三段“Emerging research suggests that courses in lower-ranked universities, on average, scored higher on teaching than courses in higher-ranked universities. (最新的研究表明,排名较低的大学的课程在教学方面的平均得分高于排名较高的大学的课程。)”可推断出,本文主要讲述的是排名方面出现的问题。选项D“However, the rankings ignore a critical factor: the quality of teaching.(然而,排名忽略了一个关键因素:教学质量。)”
根据空前内容“When I talk to families as a scholar of higher education, they’re often surprised that teaching excellence is not counted in rankings.(作为一名研究高等教育的学者,当我与一些家庭交谈时,他们常常惊讶地发现,优秀的教学水平并没有被纳入排名。)” F“They’re even more surprised at how teaching is undervalued by universities.(更让他们惊讶的是,大学竟然低估了教学的价值。)”
空前内容“Emerging research suggests that courses in lower-ranked universities, on average, scored higher on teaching than courses in higher-ranked universities.(最新的研究表明,排名较低的大学的课程在教学方面的平均得分高于排名较高的大学的课程。)”以及空后内容“The absence of teaching excellence from the rankings is surprising given the link between high-quality teaching and student success. Quality teaching is one of the most important predictors of a wide range of college outcomes.(考虑到高质量教学与学生成功之间的联系,排名中没有优秀教学令人惊讶。优质教学是衡量大学成绩的最重要因素之一。)”讲述的都是大学排名中没有考虑到教学。选项G“In fact, universities often shift emphasis from teaching to other ranking factors.(事实上,大学经常把重点从教学转移到其他排名因素上。)”
根据空前内容“Rankings, however, are only one reason why a low value is placed on teaching in higher education. Administrators often don’t view teaching excellence as a way to increase enrolment (注册) or funding.(然而,排名只是高等教育中对教学重视程度较低的一个原因。管理者通常不会将卓越的教学视为增加入学率或资金的一种方式。)”可知,上文分析了教学不被纳入排名的原因,该空应该讲其后果。选项B“Therefore, it’s not highly valued in hiring or promotion.(因此,它在招聘或晋升中不受重视。)”
根据下文内容“Nevertheless, not much will change until schools with high-quality teaching are rewarded with more resources, higher rankings and increased enrolments. In the long term, universities, organisations that rank schools, and others should work to make teaching a valued, core part of the mission.(尽管如此,在拥有高质量教学的学校获得更多资源、更高排名和增加入学人数之前,不会有太大变化。从长远来看,大学、学校排名组织和其他机构应该努力使教学成为使命的一个有价值的核心部分。)”可知,此处算是站在大学的角度,提出如何把教学当成他们的首要核心任务。根据“Nevertheless”可知,空处内容和下文内容存在转折关系。选项E“Efforts to improve teaching at the university level have recently emerged.(在最近,努力改进教学水平的现象已经出现了。)”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Soon after, the race started. While I was running, I saw many runners pass me on the way. Minutes later, I already felt tired. However, to encourage those in need, I tried to show the best of me, without worrying about the result. I kept moving forward as fast as I could. After most runners finished the race, I finally made it to the finish line. Despite the tiredness, I was satisfied. Shortly after the race, the award ceremony began and several awards were presented.
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced. Confused and excited, I walked up to the winner’s platform and was awarded a medal. As the crowd cheered and clapped loudly, I felt warmth in my heart. After the ceremony, I learned from my friend Jim that there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds. Although I only beat one person, Jim praised me for my determination, courage, and kindness. Honestly, I was proud of myself. This race increased my love for running and my confidence in myself.
