【原文】W: I read a story in a book the other day. It showed something important and I wanted to share it with you. The story was set in the years before cars were invented, so the rich had to travel in coaches. One day, a young lady wanted to watch a play in the theater. Her coachman took her to the theater in a coach. It was very cold. While she was watching the play, the poor coachman had to sit outside in the snow on the driver’s seat of the coach looking after the horse. Inside the theater, the lady was moved to tears by the performance. Some actors in the play were in extremely poor situations. She showed great pity on them. However, when she came out and saw the coachman covered with snow and almost frozen to death, she just considered it as a normal part of life. Nowadays, whenever I see people in terrible situations on TV, I feel sad, wishing that I could do something to make a difference. But I often ignore people and things around me, like people who struggle with life. They lose their jobs, experience death in their family or suffer diseases. Help those as you can. This is the story. Is there anyone who can share something you read during the holidays in class?

There’s no doubt that football is the global sport. Though basketball, tennis, and other sports are popular too, nothing comes close to football. Being played in every country in the world, football provides dozens of superstars. The numbers are greater when compared to any other sport, and this drives the popularity of football up. Have you ever wondered when the sport started and became popular?
Football has its origin (起源) in China and has a history of more than 2,000 years. However, modern football originally appeared in Britain in the 19th century. Folk football matches had been played before in many cities and towns, but never on a professional level.
Football became a winter sport game played in different schools. The rules were carried out by each school, and this made it difficult for players to play an official game with each other. It all changed in 1849 at the University of Cambridge that invented a set of standard rules known as the Cambridge rules of football. From that moment, a new star sport was born.
By the early 20th century, football had spread all across Europe. In 1904, FIFA was set up. There are seven original members, including France, Denmark and Spain, FIFA became the governing body for many associations in Europe.
England’s international success improved the popularity of the sport in the country. The league (联赛) in Britain was set up in 1992. From the 1990s, it became a truly impressive piece of football organization, becoming the world’s top football league in the process.
Football is obviously the most popular sport in the world. It is impossible for any other sport to take its place especially with leagues spending billions of pounds every year to stay in the focus.

Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? A study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.
The finding came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults between the age of 18 and 85 in the United States.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.
Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The survey also found that men and women had similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
The original goal of the study was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.
32. Old people may be happier probably because _________.
A. their children have grown up B. they don’t have to work every day
C. they can do whatever they like best D. they are most likely satisfied with life
33. According to the survey, when will adults feel most stressful?
A. In their twenties. B. In their fifties.
C. In their seventies. D. In their eighties.
34. What may make Arthur Stone a bit surprised?
A. Women usually live longer than men. B. Middle-age men mostly are very rich.
C. Old people usually have a better sleep. D. Most of old people can’t sleep well at night.
35. Which of the following may be the topic of this passage?
A. The difference between men and women. B. Old people’s feeling of happiness.
C. The young people and the old people. D. The connection of sleep and happiness.
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. B

Last Sunday, when my parents went out shopping, I suddenly got an idea: why not give the rooms a thorough cleaning? Firstly I collected all the books, newspapers and other things scattered in the rooms and put them in place. Then I wiped the dust off all the furniture. After that, I swept and mopped the floors.

七、读后续写(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为100 左右。
My father’s T-shirt
As a teenager, I am not mature enough. I got angry quite easily and was not good at communicating with others. I had quarrels with my friends, and I was not polite to elders. Because of my bad behavior, I was sometimes punished by my father. However, it took me a long time to learn to control my temper and take the responsibility to make up for my mistakes.
I still remember it was an early autumn. Some leaves started to turn yellow and the weather became cool. One day, as I was getting ready for school, my mother carelessly handed me my father’s T-shirt instead of mine. At that time, I was getting to have a larger size than my father, so when I put on the T-shirt, I felt as if I wasn’t able to breathe! Soon, I realized that it was a small mistake which was made by my mother, but somehow the breathless feeling was so strong that it made me very angry. I could feel my anger growing, bubbling up inside myself. I shouted at her, “Why did you give me the wrong T-shirt?” My mother said sorry with a smile, but I continued to shout at her without thinking much. I got it off my body so wildly, making a hole in it and threw it on the floor. Then I put on my own T-shirt and rushed out of the house before my mother could stop me.
At that time, I didn’t consider how my mother was feeling. I just thought about myself. So after school, when I got home, I felt so regretful but I didn’t say a word to my mom. Feeling so frustrated, my mother shared her bad feeling with my father who was just after work from office, “See what your son has done.” I was so scared that maybe my father would punish me. But unexpectedly, instead of saying he would scold or beat me, my father quietly asked my mother to mend the T-shirt.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为100 左右。
2.续写一段,该段的开头语已为你写好。
Seeing my father’s response, I felt more ashamed-of my bad behavior.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Seeing my father’s response, I felt more ashamed of my bad behavior. He came close to me, sat down and asked me why I behaved like that in a gentle voice. Indeed, what my mother did was just a small mistake that wasn’t worth mentioning but I made a fuss. I realized it was my failure in controlling my temper that caused displeasure. I felt terribly sorry for having damaged my father’s T-shirt. On that day, I decided not to let anger take me anymore. Whenever I felt the urge to lose temper, I would try to hold my breath until I calmed down or transfer my attention to let out my bad emotion. Gradually, I changed to a better person, more patient, tolerant and compassionate.

It is impossible for any other sport to take its place, especially with leagues spending billions of pounds every year to stay in the focus.
28. What is the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 1?

B. There were no common rules.
C. The season made players hard to win.
D. Officials made players misunderstand the rules.
31. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By time order. B. By space order.
