Officer Michael Rivers, a policeman who was snapped (抓拍) and the image shared on Facebook, as he sat sharing his lunch with a homeless woman at the side of the road in North Carolina, in the USA, is praised.
According to Chris Barnes, his wife Cassie took the photo while she was on her lunch break. She saw the pair sharing a pizza and soft drink while they were having a friendly chat. Mr. Barnes uploaded the image with the notes: “Cassie was out on her lunch break and observed the officer enjoying lunch with a homeless person.”
Officer Rivers recalled seeing the woman earlier that day. He told Yahoo news: “I was leaving the parking lot of Walmart and she was standing by the stop sign. Her shirt read, ‘Homeless the fastest way of becoming a nobody.’ I hated that she felt that way.” He added: “I always try to talk to the homeless just to see how they got into their situation. You know, because it can happen to any one of us, at any given moment.”
After he drove away, he circled back to ask if the woman was hungry and if she wanted food. The officer said she was honoured by his offer. He bought them both pizza and Mountain Dew and when the pair sat down to eat, he learned of her family struggles and told her: “Hey, you still got stuff to live for, you still got your life ahead of you. It's never too late.”
Officer Rivers, who does recruiting (征兵) for the Goldsboro PD, hopes to send a message of sympathy for others. He added: “When the younger or newer guys come in, I let them know,‘Hey, treating the community like human beings is the most important thing in the world.”
“So, if we as police officers show that love and sympathy to everybody, no matter their age, financial background or race, the world would be a better place.”

A. Because it was taken by his wife. B. Because the officer was his friend.

B. Because her situation was serious.

A. Policemen should be sympathetic and caring.
B. Anyone can become homeless at any given moment.
C. Policemen should become heroes.
D. People should learn to draw others' attention.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. How to become a good model for policemen.
B How the policemen help the homeless.

D. A policeman seen sharing lunch with a homeless woman.

I've been writing since before I could write. As a kid, I dictated stories to my parents.About 12 years ago,I was living in New York City and pursuing a master in creative writing. For years I'd been suffering vision disorder, but in New York my symptoms worsened. I became unable to read or write for any considerable length of time. I tried vision therapy(疗法),an overhead projector,a special pair of glasses-all in vain.
Eventually,I discovered a computer program for the visually challenged. As I typed,my words were read aloud by an automated voice. With my screen dimmed to black,I relied entirely on audio feedback to know what I had written.
Facing the blank page is worrying, but facing the black page is worse. The dark screen is a sinkhole that swallows creative hope. Sentences disappear into it like an astronaut into a black hole. I managed to complete my master degree, but it took me years to adapt to my new reality. The greatest barrier seemed to be the automated voice, which was like a robot parrot on my shoulder, and I wanted nothing more than to drive it away. If a pianist were forced to practice on an untuned piano, would it corrupt his ear over time?
Of course,I could have quit writing and stopped making myself suffer. But it honestly never occurred to me-and I'm glad it didn't. Last year, after I told my story on the radio,I was contacted by VocaliD,a Massachusetts-based company that created a voice modeled on my own.
The first time I heard the voice they created, it is so close to my own that the two are nearly indistinguishable. I've only just begun using this new voice. My hope is that this will restore a sense of solitude(孤独) to my writing process, allowing me easier access to that inner space where the imagination can take over, and I can forget myself, and the real work can begin.
The black screen still exists-it always will-but the robot parrot has taken wing.
8. What happened to the author when pursuing a master degree in New York?
A. His sight started to fail due to much reading.
B. His eyes couldn't sustain long hours of reading.
C. He had to drop out due to his vision disorder.
D. He successfully overcame his vision problem.
9. What still bothered the author after he got his master degree?
A. The untuned automated voice.
B. The pet parrot on his shoulder.
C. The computer with a dark screen.
D. The noise from a neighboring pianist.
10. How did the author feel when first hearing the voice created by VocaliD?
A. Excited. B. Annoyed.
C. Unmoved. D. Relaxed.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The automated voice is too annoying to bear.
B. The author can restore his sight to normal.
C. The author starts to enjoy his writing again.
D. It is likely that the technology will improve.
D
Why are some people better able to fight off the flu than others? Part of the answer, according to a new study, is related to the first flu strain we encounter in childhood.
Scientists from UCLA and the University of Arizona have found that people’s ability to fight off the flu virus is determined not only by the subtypes of flu they have had throughout their lives, but also by the sequence (顺序) in which they have been infected by those viruses. Their study was published in the open- access journal PLoS Pathogens. The research offers an explanation for why some people become much worse than others when infected with the same strain of the flu virus.
In addition, UCLA scientists, including Professor James Lloyd Smith, who was also a senior author of the PLoS Pathogens research, recently completed a study that analyzed travel- related screening for the novel coronavirus 2019-nCoV. The researchers reported that screening travelers is not very effective for the 2019 coronavirus — that it will catch less than half of infected travelers, on average — and that most infected travelers are undetectable, meaning that they have no symptoms yet, and are unaware that they have been exposed. So stopping the spread of the virus is not simply a matter of enhancing screening methods at airports and other travel centers.
“This puts the onus on government officials and public health officials to follow up with travelers after they arrive, to isolate them and trace their contacts if they get sick later,” said Lloyd- Smith, a UCLA professor of eco logy and evolutionary biology. “Many governments have started to impose quarantines (隔离), or even travel bans, as they realize that screening is not sufficient to stop the spread of the coronavirus.”
One major concern, Lloyd-Smith said, is that other countries, especially developing nations, lack the infrastructure and resources for those measures, and are therefore vulnerable to importing the disease. “ Much of the public health world is very concerned about the virus being introduced into Africa or India, where large populations exist that do not have access to advanced medical care,” he said.
12. What is the significance of the scientists’research?
A. It explains the cause of the flu virus.
B. It reduces the risk of people being infected.
C. It analyzes people's ability to fight off the virus.
D. It stops the spread of the flu virus all around the world.
13. What do we know about the novel coronavirus from paragraph 3?
A. Travelers are at high risk of being exposed to it.
B. It is more difficult to stop its spread than expected.
C. Most travelers infected with it are detected by screening.
D. It spreads especially quickly at airports and railway stations.
14. Why does the writer mention Lloyd- Smith's words in paragraph 4?
A. To persuade people not to travel. B. To provide a method to kill the virus.
C. To show the harmful effects of the virus. D. To stress the responsibilities of officials.
15. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “vulnerable” in the last paragraph?
A. easy B. impossible C. responsible D. indifferent

Blind Olympic Athletes Show the Universal Nature
Tune into any sports coverage on TV, and you will see many athletes proudly raise their arms and heads in victory, while a much larger number hang their shoulders and necks in defeat. Studies have revealed why—they are universal behaviours, performed by humans in response to success and failure.
The discovery came from Jessica Tracy from the University of British Columbia and David Matsumoto from San Francisco State University, who wanted to see how people showed feelings of pride and shame. ___16___They tried to find a large group of people, and it was critically important that some of these subjects had never seen other people reacting to success or failure before.
The answer was Athens, during the 2004 Olympic Games. Its sister competition—the Paralympics—included many athletes who were born blind. ___17___Working with a professional photographer, Tracy and Matsumoto compared the body language of 108 competitors, 41 of whom had lost their sight, and 12 of whom were blind from birth. The photographer repeatedly took pictures of these athletes after their competitions, and the researchers carefully recorded the positions of their heads, arms and bodies. ___18___The winners tilted their heads up, smiled, lifted their arms and puffed out their chests, while shoulders bent forward and narrowed chests were the marks of losers.
___19___Men and women who have never seen other people behave in these ways still make exactly the same movements. And while it’s possible that parents may have taught their blind children some of these actions, it’s very unlikely that they could have taught them all—particularly the expansion or narrowing of the chest.
These actions were also remarkably consistent between contestants from every part of the world. Tracy and Matsumoto argue that pride and shame deserve a place alongside other primary emotions like happiness, fear and surprise. ___20___
A. They are inborn behaviours and are accompanied by their own distinct sets of actions.
B. In fact, the culture was found to have only a very small effect on their body language.
C. Therefore, they could not have witnessed how other people reacted to winning and losing.
D. The result suggested that the athletes were showing their pride based on careful observation.
E. The athletes’ behaviours give strong evidence that they have had the actions naturally since birth.
F. Analyzing the data, they found that the sighted and sightless athletes behaved in almost exactly the same ways.
G. In particular they wanted to know whether these expressions were culturally determined and learned through observation.

C
B 9. A 10. A 11. C

C Most travelers infected with it are detected by screening.
A. easy B. impossible C. responsible D. indifferent
C 13. B 14. D 15. A
根据文章第二段“The research offers an explanation for why some people become much worse than others when infected with the same strain of the flu virus.(这项研究解释了为什么有些人在感染同一种流感病毒后病情会比其他人严重得多。)”
根据文章第三段“The researchers reported that screening travelers is not very effective for the 2019 coronavirus —— that it will catch less than half of infected travelers, on average— and that most infected travelers are undetectable, meaning that they have no symptoms yet, and are unaware that they have been exposed. So stopping the spread of the virus is not simply a matter of enhancing screening methods at airports and other travel centers.(研究人员报告说,对2019年冠状病毒进行旅行者筛查的效果不是很明显——它平均只能检测到不到一半的感染者——而且大多数被感染的旅行者都是无法检测的,这意味着他们还没有症状,也没有意识到自己已经被感染。因此,阻止病毒传播并不仅仅是加强机场和其他旅行中心的筛查方法的问题。)”可知,从第三段中我们对新型冠状病毒了解到的是,这种新型冠状病毒的传播比预期的更难控制。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段““This puts the onus on government officials and public health officials to follow up with travelers after they arrive, to isolate them and trace their contacts if they get sick later,” said Lloyd- Smith, a UCLA professor of eco logy and evolutionary biology. “Many governments have started to impose quarantines (隔离), or even travel bans, as they realize that screening is not sufficient to stop the spread of the coronavirus.”(加州大学洛杉矶分校生态学与进化生物学教授劳埃德·史密斯说:“这要求政府官员和公共卫生官员在旅行者抵达后进行跟踪,如果他们后来生病了,就隔离他们并追踪他们的接触者。”“许多政府已经开始实施隔离,甚至旅行禁令,因为他们意识到筛查并不足以阻止冠状病毒的传播。”)”可知,作者在第四段提到了劳埃德·史密斯的话强调官员干部的责任,想让政府有所行动。故选D项。
【15题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章最后一段“One major concern, Lloyd Smith said, is that other countries, especially developing nations, lack the infrastructure and resources for those measures(劳埃德·史密斯说,一个主要的担忧是,其他国家,尤其是发展中国家,缺乏实施这些措施的基础设施和资源)”可推知,这些国家对于疾病的输入是很容易受到影响的,所以推测划线词意思是“容易受影响的”。故选A项。

G. In particular, they wanted to know whether these expressions were culturally determined and learned through observation.
G 17. C 18. F 19. E 20. A
根据上文“The discovery came from Jessica Tracy from the University of British Columbia and David Matsumoto from San Francisco State University, who wanted to see how people showed feelings of pride and shame.(这一发现来自英属哥伦比亚大学的Jessica Tracy和旧金山州立大学的David Matsumoto,他们想知道人们是如何表达自豪和羞愧的。)” G项“In particular, they wanted to know whether these expressions were culturally determined and learned through observation.”(他们尤其想知道这些表达方式是否是文化决定的,是否是通过观察习得的。)
根据上文“Its sister competition—the Paralympics—included many athletes who were born blind.(它的姊妹比赛——残奥会——包括许多天生失明的运动员。)” C项“Therefore, they could not have witnessed how other people reacted to winning and losing.”(因此,他们无法目睹其他人对胜利和失败的反应。)符合语境,呼应第二段“They tried to find a large group of people, and it was critically important that some of these subjects had never seen other people reacting to success or failure before.(他们试图找到一大群人,其中一些人之前从未见过其他人对成功或失败做出反应,这一点非常重要。)”
根据上文“Working with a professional photographer, Tracy and Matsumoto compared the body language of 108 competitors, 41 of whom had lost their sight, and 12 of whom were blind from birth. The photographer repeatedly took pictures of these athletes after their competitions, and the researchers carefully recorded the positions of their heads, arms and bodies. (在一位专业摄影师的帮助下,Tracy和Matsumoto比较了108名参赛者的肢体语言,其中41人后天失明,12人从出生就失明。摄影师在运动员比赛结束后反复拍照,研究人员仔细记录他们头部、手臂和身体的姿势。)”以及后文“The winners tilted their heads up, smiled, lifted their arms and puffed out their chests, while shoulders bent forward and narrowed chests were the marks of losers.
根据上一段中“The winners tilted their heads up, smiled, lifted their arms and puffed out their chests, while shoulders bent forward and narrowed chests were the marks of losers. (获胜者仰起头、微笑、举起双臂、挺起胸膛,而失败者的标志是肩膀前倾、胸膛狭窄。)”以及后文“Men and women who have never seen other people behave in these ways still make exactly the same movements. And while it’s possible that parents may have taught their blind children some of these actions, it’s very unlikely that they could have taught them all—particularly the expansion or narrowing of the chest. (从来没有见过别人有这种行为的男人和女人仍然做出完全相同的动作。虽然父母可能教过他们的盲童一些这些动作,但他们不太可能教过他们——尤其是胸部的扩张或缩小。)”可知,上一段对比的结果是有视力和失明的运动员行为方式几乎完全相同,都做出了一些共有的动作,后文则提到从来没有见过别人有这种行为的男人和女人仍然做出完全相同的动作,可推测他们的行为证明了这些动作能力是天生就有的。E项“The athletes’ behaviours give strong evidence that they have had the actions naturally since birth.”(运动员的行为有力地证明了他们从出生起就具有天生的动作能力。)
根据上文“These actions were also remarkably consistent between contestants from every part of the world. Tracy and Matsumoto argue that pride and shame deserve a place alongside other primary emotions like happiness, fear and surprise. (这些动作在来自世界各地的选手之间也非常一致。Tracy和Matsumoto认为,骄傲和羞耻应该和其他基本情感,如快乐、恐惧和惊讶,一起占有一席之地。)”可知,来自世界各地的选手动作也一致,说明骄傲和羞耻是天生的行为,A选项中They指代上文中pride and shame。A项“They are inborn behaviours and are accompanied by their own distinct sets of actions.”(它们是天生的行为,伴随着它们自己独特的一系列行为。)
