From Hawaii to Bali and the ski-slopes of Perisher, 26-year-old Jimmy Antram has seen plenty of the world. But it has all been from the vantage point (制高点) of his mother’s back. Fulfilling a promise she made to herself to give her disabled son the best life she possibly could, Niki Antram has spent years travelling the globe with Jimmy clinging (紧贴) to her shoulders.
Jimmy was born with physical and mental disabilities, including blindness, and requires round-the-clock care from Ms Antram. He has a wheelchair, but Ms Antram has never enjoyed using it. She’s content to carry him while she’s physically able and helps him walk short distances on his own. Incredible photographs taken around the globe show him clinging on as they hike through mountains and rain forests.
Ms Antram makes a detailed plan and calls ahead for every place she wants to visit—whether it be a restaurant or hotel.“Even if I know we will be okay, I like to inform the companies to make sure they understand and are okay with having us there,” she says.
She counts herself lucky that they have similar interests. They both enjoy the outdoors, the water and adventures. “From Hawaii to Bali I’d be staying out all night with Jimmy because he was a party animal like me at the time,” she says. “I will find ways with Jimmy to get him the best and most adventurous life.”
When they’re not travelling, they wake up in the morning and go for a bike ride Jimmy in the trailer while his mother peddles for them both—as the sun rises. The pair smile and wave as they pass their neighbors. People who were once strangers have come to know and love Jimmy, and admire Ms Antram. Before their early outing, she’s already made breakfast, fed Jimmy and dressed him for the day. Her schedule is exhausting, but she’s determined to give Jimmy the best life she can provide.
Ms Antram says her heart “broke” the day she learned her son was permanently blind and it took a long time to overcome those feelings of hurt. “Being a mom, I didn’t get that carefree life that most moms get,” she says. “I had responsibility.”
4. Why does Ms Antram carry Jimmy on her back instead of using a wheelchair?
A. The wheelchair causes some inconvenience.
B. Jimmy prefers to enjoy scenery from her back.
C. Carrying Jimmy gives her a sense of achievement.
D. She wants to show her commitment to loving her son.
5. What can we learn about Ms Antram and Jimmy?
A. They have both an appetite for adventures.
B. They are sick of dealing with their neighbors.
C. They stay out sometimes to get closer to animals.
D. They are frequently rejected by different companies.
6. Which of the following can best describe Niki Antram?
A. Ambitious and courageous.
B. Adventurous and optimistic.
C. Open-minded and considerate.
D. Strong-willed and responsible.
7. What might be the most suitable title for the text?
A. On the Road: Life Full of Adventures

Comfort food makes a person feel good. Food high in sugar or fat tends to improve mood by stimulating the brain’s reward system. So it makes sense that many of us may turn to food for comfort in times of stress. There’s some fascinating research that examines food as a source of comfort. However, the most interesting thing about this research may be that foods are far less comforting than we tend to believe they are.
Traci Mann, a professor of psychology, and colleagues conducted a series of study with college students. The researchers examined how much comfort foods actually improve mood. They provided students with one of the three foods that they had indicated were their top, personal comfort foods. After producing a negative mood by having them watch movie clips designed to increase their sadness, anger and anxiety, the researchers offered the students their comfort food.
They had to assess (评估) how they felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream, pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically ate to feel better. All of the students completed the study on two separate occasions: once when they were able to eat their comfort food and once when they were able to eat another food they liked, but they wouldn’t call a comfort food. The researchers found that comfort food did improve students’ moods — but only by a little bit and not more than the other food they liked.
In another study, comfort food was compared to no food at all, and students’ moods seemed to improve even when they didn’t eat anything—most likely just due to the passage of time.
The take-home message from the studies? While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to address emotional problems. Of course, everyone can indulge(纵情)in a comfort food from time to time, but overall, aim for these instances to be the exception rather than the rule.
8. Which aspect of comfort food do Tract Mann’s studies focus on?
A. The means by which it affects mood. B. Its role in reducing negativity.
C. Its impact on physical health. D. The extent to which it lifts mood.
9. How were the studies carried out?
A. By analyzing questionnaires about comfort foods.
B. By observing students’ different reactions to foods.
C. By collecting data about people from all walks of life
D. By comparing students’ feelings on different occasions.
10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To explain a rule. B. To introduce a concept.
C. To make a suggestion. D. To present a fact.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Science behind Comfort Food B. Comfort Food May not Work Wonders
C. Feeling Negative? Try Comfort Food D. Comfort Food Tends to Be Unhealthy
D
What strategy do you use to make tough life decisions like whether to end a relationship, quit your job, or go back to school? Maybe you weigh the advantages and disadvantages. Maybe you go with your sixth sense. Or maybe, if you’re like most people, you simply do nothing. After all, we have a tendency to prefer the status quo (现状), and focus more on the potential losses involved with change rather than the potential benefits.
But here’s a simpler strategy: When you’re indecisive about a big life decision, choose the path of change. That’s the takeaway of research recently published by Steven Levitt, an economist at the University of Chicago.
For the study, Levitt asked people who were facing tough decisions to flip (抛) a digital coin on the website FreakonomicsExperiments.com. The coin tosses were randomized, with one side representing change, the other status quo. The study asked more than 20,000 participants to make whichever decision the coin toss directed, and then report back on how things played out after two and six months.
Of course, not everyone followed through. The two-month survey found that participants chose change less frequently than they had initially predicted they would. After six months, however, this tendency toward inaction disappeared. But most surprising were the results on well-being. At both the two and six-month marks, most people who chose change reported feeling happier, better off, and that they had made the correct decision.
The study had some limitations. One is that its participants weren’t selected randomly. Another limitation is that participants whose decision didn’t play out well might have been less likely to report back on their status after two and six months. Still the study does suggest that people who are on the edge of a tough decision are probably better off going with change. Levitt isn’t suggesting you flip a coin to make all decisions. But coin-flipping does seem to have some benefits. Levitt notes that some people might prefer giving in to their fate to randomness in order to avoid regret. But you can also use randomness a bit more sensibly. When facing a tough decision, you could flip a coin and, upon seeing the outcome, notice whether you feel relief or fright. If you feel relieved, that’s probably the path you should choose.
12. What is most people’s priority when making hard choices?
A. Valuing potential benefits.
B. Calculating potential losses.
C. Making a change to the status quo.
D. Following inner voice of one’s mind.
13. What are the findings of the two surveys?
A. More participants remained inactive after six months.
B. Making changes brought most participants happiness.
C. Participants’ action agreed with their initial prediction.
D. All participants gave immediate feedback on their status.
14. What is a limitation of the study?
A. The insufficiency of study statistics.
B. The insensible outcome of the analysis.
C. The incorrect method of flipping a coin.
D. The randomness of picking study subjects.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Coin flips are beneficial to making hard choices.
B. A study offers a strategy for making hard decisions.
C. When facing a hard decision, choose the status quo.
D. A study justifies making hard choices with randomness.

Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.
● Read books from past eras.
___16___ Otherwise you’d be “completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times,” just as Albert Einstein put it. “Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses,” he said.
● ___17___
Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that “you must linger (流连) among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind.”
● Shop at secondhand bookstores.
Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers. ___18___
● Check out authors’ reading lists.
In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about how to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading. ___19___ Mortimer wrote that “one way to understand them is to read the books they read.”
● Make the final decision by yourself.
___20___ It’s you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your mood guide you to your next great read.
A. Interest is the best teacher.
B. Great authors are great readers.
C. Leave some room for older works.
D. Learn more about those great authors.
E. Don’t jump too quickly from book to book.

Erie raised his daughter Riley alone. One day, Eric noticed a young teenage boy standing in front of a drugstore. He approached him, and found out that the boy wanted to buy medicine for his sick mother, but had no money. The boy cried out, “if I don’t bring home medicine, my mom will die. But I won’t be able to handle it.”
Upon hearing this, Erie didn’t hesitate to pay for the medicine. “I’ll pay for the medicine on his behalf,” he said, handing the pharmacist (药剂师) a couple of bills from his pocket. The boy looked at Erie with grateful eyes, and cried, “Thank you so much. You are heaven-sent.”
“There will always be people willing to help you, son,” Eric told him before handing him two portions of food. “Here, take this to your mom and have a hot meal with her,” he said before letting the boy go.
His daughter Riley saw the whole scene and said, “Dad, we have barely enough money. Why did you pay for the medicine?” “Riley, the good you put out into the world will eventually find its way back to you. Just keep doing good,” Eric told his daughter.
When Riley turned thirty, she needed an operation urgently after being told there was something wrong with her heart. With difficulty breathing, Eric rushed Riley to the hospital in an ambulance. “You’ll be alright, Riley.” he cried. “Don’t worry, Daddy is here. We’ll get through this together,” he promised her.
Eric did try his best to find the money for bis daughter’s operation. He asked all of his friends, but it was still not enough. Therefore, Eric decided to sell their house. It was enough to pay for her operation, but they would be left with nothing, “it’s okay,” he told himself. I will be able to earn money again, but if I lose my daughter, nothing will ever bring her back.”
By the time Erie made it back to the hospital, Riley was in her hospital room, weak and pale. He sat beside her bed and held her hand. “You’ll be okay, my sweet daughter. We’ll soon have the money for the operation,” he promised her.

B. Jimmy prefers to enjoy scenery from her back.
C. Carrying Jimmy gives her a sense of achievement.
D. She wants to show her commitment to loving her son.

C. By collecting data about people from all walks of life
D By comparing students’ feelings on different occasions.
10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To explain a rule. B. To introduce a concept.

___16___ Otherwise, you’d be “completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times,” just as Albert Einstein put it.

故填a。
故填was launched。
故填without。
故填if。

【答案】
Eric suddenly noticed an envelope on the bed. It was addressed to him. He opened it and was surprised to find a check inside and a note that read: “You’d saved a boy’s mother years before. Thank you so much for the three packs of medicine, and two portions of food.” Immediately, Eric remembered the boy he had helped a long time ago. He went to the nurse station and asked them who visited Riley. The nurse told him there was no one except the doctor. Eric came to realize the doctor was exactly that boy.
He ran to the doctor’s office and hugged him. “Thank you, son,” Eric cried. The doctor said, “It's I who should say thanks. That day, you saved my mother’s life. Since then, I promised myself that I would study hard to become a doctor to help more people. Now I have achieved the dream.” “I am proud of you,” Eric said with happiness. The doctor smiled and promised to arrange the operation for Riley soon and take care of her during her hospitalization. Riley realized that what her dad said was true -- the good you put out into the world will find its way back to you.
