Since his students began using Quizlet, English teacher Tristan Thorne has noticed an improvement in their ability to learn and use new words. Quizlet is a learning app, a computer program you use on your mobile phone. It can help users build and test their knowledge of English words. Quizlet has word sets for millions of subjects. And, it is quickly becoming a useful mobile tool for language learners.
Thorne teaches at Columbia University in New York City. Thanks to learning apps, Jeff Strack, another English teacher, has also noticed improvement in his students’ ability to remember information. He teaches at Hostos Community College, also in New York. He and Thorne are part of a growing number of language educators adding mobile apps to their classes.
Strack and Thorne seem to agree that the days when teachers would not permit the use of mobile phones are gone. When they use apps, language learners communicate more differently than in a traditional classroom. Users act on or respond to something, instead of just listening to new information.
Thorne believes that apps can help learners become more active in learning. For example, each week, his students are required to add vocabulary words into Quizlet for others to use. He says some apps also make it easy for students to know their language strengths and weaknesses.
The biggest improvement Strack has seen in his students is that they are much more active in whole-class or small-group discussions. “Apps let all students take part in the activity, whether it’s a game, quiz or practice activity,” he says.
Many existing learning apps are designed for students of all ages and levels. Some are designed for group activities. Some support independent learning. Still some are good for homework. Thorne says he especially likes Quizlet and three other apps: QR Codes, Socrative and Evernote.
24. What do Strack and Thorne do to improve their teaching?
A. They design learning apps for their students. B. They don’t allow their students to use apps after class.
C. They allow their students to use mobile apps to study. D. They order their students not to use mobile phones in class.
25. What happens to the language learners after using the apps according to the text?
A. They take an active part in learning. B. They save much time and money.
C. They remember their weaknesses. D. They improve personal designing skills.
26. What can we learn about the existing learning apps?
A. They have three types in total. B. They are too few to choose from.
C. They are only designed for homework. D. They are designed for different uses.
27. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Great changes in science and technology B. The use of mobile phones will be gone
C. Ways to choose from different mobile apps D. Better language learning with mobile apps

It may come as a shock to owners, but dogs hate being hugged, a study has shown. Animal psychologists say dogs feel stressed and unhappy when they are hugged by their owners, because it stops them from running away.
In a study which analyzed 250 pictures of dogs as they were being hugged, eight out of 10 animals looked clearly uncomfortable. Experts at The Kennel Club, and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, also agreed that owners should not treat their dogs like children, because most pets did not like to be hugged.
The new study was carried out by Dr Stanley Coren, a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia. He analyzed images of dogs being hugged by adults and children he found on the Internet, looking for signs of stress. At an extreme end, when a dog is especially anxious, it shows its teeth or may bite, but Dr Coren said there are small signs that it may be uncomfortable. Signs of stress include the dog folding its ears down, half-moon eyes or turning its head away to stop eye contact. If the dog has its eyes closed it could also be a sign of anxiety. Opening its mouth or raising one paw is another warning sign.
“It is clearly better from the dog’s point of view if you express your fondness for your pet with a pat, a kind word, and maybe a treat.”
“Some people think that giving their dog a hug is a nice thing to do, but the reality is that a family pet will often stand a hug but doesn’t like it.”
“On the whole dogs are sociable animals and love interacting with people, but any action that restricts a dog’s movement could make it uncomfortable and it is important for an owner to recognize the signs of stress or anxiety.”
28. What is a common misunderstanding about dogs?
A. Dogs can be stressed when hugged. B. Dogs feel unhappy when they are hugged.
C. Dogs like to be hugged by their owners. D. Hugging dogs stops them from running away.
29. Which of the following statements is NOT correct?
A. Owners should not treat their dogs like children. B. Most dogs don’t like to be hugged.
C. Dogs may bite you if they are especially anxious. D. Dogs are stressed if they open their eyes.
30. What is the function of the last three paragraphs?
A. To warn readers to stay away from dogs. B. To call on readers to keep dogs as their pets.
C. To advise readers to hug dogs as often as possible. D. To persuade readers to express your fondness to dogs properly.
31. Who is the text probably given to?
A. Dog doctors. B. Dog experts. C. Dog owners. D. Dog trainers.
D
At the foot of an Icelandic volcano, a newly-opened plant is sucking carbon dioxide from the air and turning it into rock, locking away the main culprit (引起问题的事物) behind global warming.
Orca, based on the Icelandic word for “energy”, does its cutting-edge work at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant in southwest Iceland. It is the world’s largest plant using the direct air capture technology (DAC),which is the least developed carbon removal technology. By pulling CO2 from surrounding air, the plant is different from more traditional types of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects at highly-polluting industrial chimneys.
Fans in front of the collector draw in ambient air and release it, largely purified CO2, through ventilators at the back “As soon as the filter is full, we close it off, and then we heat it up to around 100 degrees Celsius to separate the pure gas,” project manager Lukas Kaufmann added. Dissolved in fresh water, the gas is then put under high pressure into basalt (玄武岩) rock between 800 and 2,000 meters underground. The solution fills the rock’s holes and the solidification process begins. It takes up to two years for CO2 to turn into a solid. The carbon dioxide would only be re-released into the air if the rock were to heat up to very high temperatures, as in a volcanic eruption.
The Orca plant can suck up around 4,000 tons of CO2 per year. The amount is tiny by global standards. Climate modelling suggests the world needs to eliminate several billion tons per year by 2050.
CCS is one of the methods advocated by experts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels by 2100. CCS methods capture CO2 before it enters the atmosphere, pulling it immediately from highly-concentrated industrial pollution zones. But the DAC process, like the one in Iceland, aims to capture past emissions already in the atmosphere.
However, the DAC method is in its early days and is prevented by the small concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.
32. Why is the filter heated to 100 degrees Celsius?
A. To dissolve CO2 into water. B. To make high pressure.
C. To burn away CO2. D. To get pure CO2.
33. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Produce. B. Consume. C. Remove. D. Store.
34. Which of the following statements is RIGHT about DAC?
A. It deals with CO2 already in the air. B. It absorbs CO2 before it enters the air.
C. It separates CO2 directly in the atmosphere. D. It catches CO2 wherever it exists.
35. What is the challenge for the DAC method now?
A. It isn’t supported by experts to limit global warming.
B. It doesn’t work well in the atmosphere with small concentration of CO2.
C Volcanic eruptions may get CO2 back into the air again.
D. It is too slow to turn CO2 into rock.

Wildlife workers in Florida are feeding manatees (热带海牛) to keep them from starving.____36____ So far, the rescue workers have already given out 25 tons of lettuce.
Manatees are huge sea mammals that can be as long as 4 meters when grown. ____37____ In spite of their size, manatees only eat plants that live in the sea. That’s one reason they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. They spend most of their time in warm, shallow water looking for food.
But Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals since 1967. Most threats to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems facing the creatures is boats. Manatees are curious and fairly slow, which has led to thousands of manatees being injured or killed.
____38____ At one point, there were only about 2, 000 manatees left in Florida. But by 2016, there were roughly 8,800 manatees.
But now manatees are facing a new challenge: they can’t get enough to eat. Many of the beds of sea grass that manatees depend upon have been killed by human-caused pollution. Sea grass began to disappear around 2011. Warming seas, combined with polluted water and fertilizers that have washed off of farmlands, have created huge growths of algae on the ocean’s surface. ____39____
Last year, 1,101 manatees died from starving. ____40____ Many of the manatees that remain are so thin that their ribs can be seen. Often they have trouble swimming.
So last December, wildlife experts came up with a plan to get emergency food to the manatees. They decided to feed them green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. Long term, Florida is working to help restore sea grass beds. But that will take time.
A. That was a record.
B. They can weigh up to 590 kilograms.
C. The feeding station has been very successful.
D. With protection, manatees managed to bounce back.
E. It blocks the sunlight that allows the sea grass to grow.
F. But feeding these massive sea creatures takes a lot of food.
G. Research needs to be done to determine what food would be best.

C. doesn’t rain; wil1 rain D. won’t rain; will rain
【答案】C
【解析】
【详解】句意:——如果明天不下雨,去划船怎么样?——但是没人知道明天会不会下雨。根据How about going boating可知,if引导的是条件状语从句,从句应该用一般现在时态;又因为But nobody knows if it…
We will go to the park if it doesn’t rain tomorrow. 可以改写为:We will go to the park unless it rains tomorrow.

C Ways to choose from different mobile apps D.

C. Volcanic eruptions may get CO2 back into the air again.

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了海牛这种海洋动物,介绍了它们的特点以及习性等情况。
【36题详解】
根据上文“Wildlife workers in Florida are feeding manatees to keep them from starving.”以及后文“So far, the rescue workers have already given out 25 tons of lettuce.”可知野生动物工作者为了不让海牛挨饿,给它们喂了25吨食物,说明喂养海牛需要大量食物。选项F“但是喂养这些巨大的海洋生物需要大量的食物。”符合语境。故选F。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Manatees are huge sea mammals that can be as long as 4 meters when grown.”以及后文“In spite of their size, manatees only eat plants that live in the sea. They spend most of their time in warm, shallow water looking for food.”可知,本段主要是在说明海牛的身体特点,上文提到了身长,推测本句是在说明体重。因此选项B.“They can weigh up to 590 kilograms.它们可以重达590公斤。”符合语境。故选B。

【39题详解】
根据上文“But Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals since 1967. Most threats to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems facing the creatures is boats.”可知,本句应具体说明人类船只是如何影响海牛的生存的:阻挡了让海草生长的阳光,因此选项E.“It blocks the sunlight that allows the sea grass to grow.它阻挡了让海草生长的阳光。”符合语境。故选E。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Last year, 1,101 manatees died from starving.”可知,上文具体说明了死于饥饿的海牛数量,可知本句对此进行评价:这是一个记录。因此选项A.“That was a record.这是一个记录。”符合语境。故选A。
