选择性必修第一册 3 课时作业 11 SUCCESS Ⅰ. 阅读理解 " (2023·广东潮阳模拟) A British woman, Dr Mantri, growing up in India started to notice his son, Dhruv, was struggling with simple arithmetic when he was in the fifth grade. After noticing this, she started employing an abacus ( 算 盘 ) to help her son visually comprehend mathematics. “ I would ask him something like 35 minus 13 and he couldn􀆳t do it,” said Dhruv􀆳s mom Dr Mantri. “ I decided to change the way he looked at numbers,” she said. “ An abacus is a tried and tested method, and the Egyptians used it for building the pyramid. ” In just six days he started to show progress with the abacus and would go on to become a whizz kid with numbers, with even his classmates􀆳 parents reaching out for help. She never thought she would teach her son using an abacus, which she used as a child in India and it was always helpful. Within six days she started to notice a difference and see results. So dramatic was the turnaround, that school staff asked him to perform with the abacus at an assembly, where some parents even came to ask for advice on using it for their kids. IT specialist Dr Mantri said the humble abacus can be used for calculations into the trillions and kids enjoy learning on it because it􀆳s like a game. “ It becomes a playing tool for younger children, for it feels like a game. I think the success comes because children can touch and feel an abacus and visualize it,” she added. By the age of 12, Dhruv was giving online cyber-security seminars and is now pursuing a career in data science and analytics. Dhruv has now landed an apprenticeship ( 实 习 ) at an international firm. During the four-year apprenticeship, he will spend one day a week studying Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Glasgow Caledonian University. “He is so confident now and I am so proud,” she said, with Dhruv adding “ I don􀆳t think my teachers would have guessed that I would be following a career in data science at that time. ” 1. Why did Dhruv have difficulty in learning mathematics? A. He was faced with a language barrier. B. He didn􀆳t find a proper way. C. He suffered from eyesight problems. D. He lacked academic support from the family. 2. What does the underlined word “ whizz ” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Careful. B. Diligent. C. Outstanding. D. Struggling. 3. Why do kids like learning on the abacus according to the text? A. They find it appealing. B. They can calculate faster. C. They enjoy playing games. D. They are eager for success. 4. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Dhruv was addicted to the Internet at 12. B. Dhruv is teaching data science and analytics now. C. Dhruv is a full-time student at Glasgow Caledonian University. D. Dhruv􀆳s career choice was beyond his teachers􀆳 expectation. 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 -465- hh#4 # (2023·湖北十堰模拟) The most typical definition of success is “ the accomplishment of an aim or a purpose” or what most of us have heard: “the attainment of popularity or profits”. But is success really defined by purposes or profits? After graduating from high school, my family advised me to aim to build a successful career. My options were narrowed down to becoming a doctor or choosing a field in engineering. So I graduated with a chemical engineering degree. I was advised to aim for graduate studies, and in less than two years, I had a highly specialized degree in plastics engineering from one of the most reputable universities in the US. Then I found a corporate job, performed well in the organization, climbed up the ladder, and made a bigger pay cheque with every new title. My proud parents told my story to the rest of the family and friends as a “ success” story. No matter where we live in the world, we all have our own versions of success. Our families take pride in telling the world how successful we are in our profession, and often the only measure of that success becomes the financial wealth we accumulate. In a world where everything is reflected by numbers—the likes on Facebook, the number of views on YouTube, etc. —every aspect of our life is being taken over by numbers. We are conditioned to believe that the stronger your financial standing, the higher you rank on the success chart. But remember the words, “aim” or “purpose”, in the definition of success. Altruistic figures such as Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. also lived successful lives but had selfless concern over the well-being of others. While the rest of the world focused on accumulating wealth, they focused on giving, doing, and creating for everyone else. Wealth alone never will be the measure of success. Think beyond profits. No promotion or pay raise I ever received in my professional career was because of my deep desire to obtain a better title or higher pay;instead, it was based on the excellence I created in the experience our customers had with the organization. 5. What do you know about the author? A. He has lived up to his family􀆳s expectations. B. He asks his parents for advice on everything. C. He doesn􀆳t like his job though he is well paid. D. He wanted to be a doctor but became a chemical engineer. 6. What􀆳s the common awareness of success around the world? A. Social connections. B. Contributions to society. C. The accumulation of financial wealth. D. The accomplishment of personal dreams. 7. What does the underlined word “Altruistic” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Of abundant wealth. B. Of few achievements. C. Devoted to others􀆳 welfare. D. Focused on personal well-being. 8. What inspiration can be drawn from the author􀆳s working experience? A. Change jobs frequently for higher pay. B. Aim at providing quality service at work. C. Take every chance to get promotion. D. Focus on making profits from the customers. 完形填空 (2023·浙江嘉兴模拟) My mother, Donzella Washington, 80, graduated from Alabama A&M University on Dec. 6 with a bachelor􀆳s degree in social work. Success will come someday or other, though it may apparently be the conception about something that it cannot be done. 1 But the reality is that man􀆳s success depends on whether he can do the toughest tasks successfully. It is because our life is complicated and tough. And to succeed in this tough battle, perseverance and hard work is a must. 2 We 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 -467- hh#4 can prove this fact when we look at the reality of life and the history of man􀆳s success. Perseverance helps us do what we otherwise would consider impossible to do. What the world-famous scientist Sir Isaac Newton had done by twelve years􀆳 constant hard work was burnt out by his pet dog. But that could not discourage him a little. 3 It is only for his undefeated perseverance that we have been able to have many inventions and discoveries. 4 He went through thick and thin to reach his destination after months of the strenuous voyage on the sea. He discovered the way from Spain to America and offered the world a new route of communication with America. This outcome of his perseverance will be generated by the world forever. All the great men in history have written their names in golden letters by means of perseverance. 5 If we all are perseverant in whatever we do, we are sure to stand out as a successful nation in the near future. The hard-working insects can change their behavior when things seem difficult, and now some scientists find there is proof that they also like to play. Scientists from Queen Mary University of London performed an experiment, in which they set up a container that allowed bees to travel from their nest to a feeding area. But along the way, the bees could choose to pass through a separate section with some small wooden balls. Over 18 days, the scientists watched as the bees “went out of their way to roll wooden balls repeatedly, despite no apparent incentive (刺激) to do so. ” Earlier studies have shown that the black and yellow bugs are willing to learn new tricks in exchange for food or other rewards. In this case, to get rid of external factors, scientists made sure the bees had adapted to their new home and that their environment was stress-free. The finding suggests that like humans, insects also interact with objects as a form of play. Also similar to people, younger bees seem to be more playful than adult bees. “This research provides a strong indication that insects􀆳 minds are far more complicated than we imagine. There are lots of animals who play just for the purpose of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals ( 哺 乳 动 物) and birds,” said Lars Chittka, a professor of sensory and behavioral ecology at Queen Mary University of London, who led the study. The study􀆳s first author, Samadi Galpay, who is a PhD student at Queen Mary University of London, states that it is more evident that bees may be capable of experiencing feelings. “ They may actually experience some kind of positive emotional states, even if basic, like other larger animals do. This finding has effects on our understanding of the sense and welfare of insects, which, consequently, encourages us to respect and protect wildlife on Earth ever more,” she says. 1. What is the new finding about bees? A. They are fond of having fun. B. They are faithful to the queen. C. They are adaptable to changes. D. They are skilled at rolling balls. 2. How did scientists remove external influences in the experiment? A. By teaching bees new tricks. B. By rewarding bees with food. C. By making bees feel at home. D. By building new homes for bees. 3. What are Lars Chittka􀆳s words mainly about? A. The forms of bees􀆳 interaction. B. The complexity of bees􀆳 minds. C. The examples of mammals􀆳 play. D. The purpose of mammals􀆳 enjoyment. 4. What does Samadi Galpay say about the study result? A. It backs up prior understanding of insects. B. It reveals reasons for bees􀆳 positive feelings. C. It drives research on animals􀆳 emotional state. D. It contributes to wildlife conservation on Earth. 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 -469- hh#4 # (2023·山东德州模拟) When floods destroyed Bangkok more than a decade ago, Thai landscape architect Voraakhom became determined to help her sinking hometown fight this deadly climate threat. “ For us, climate change is primarily a water crisis,” she said. The architect integrates nature and water into her designs to create landscapes that help ease flooding and add greenery to densely populated cities. “To date, Thailand has tried to tackle its flooding problem by building higher and higher dams,” she said, arguing that this is the wrong approach and a solution based on fear. “The central question sinking cities like Bangkok need to focus on is how we are going to live with the water, without fear. ” One of Voraakhom􀆳s most innovative designs is Centenary Park, which stores large amounts of rainwater and prevents the surrounding streets from flooding. Voraakhom also created Asia􀆳s largest rooftop farm, Siam Green Sky, which recycles food waste from restaurants in the building below and uses it as plant fertilizer. The farm also slows down and stores large amounts of rainwater. Inspired by Thailand􀆳s traditional agricultural practices, the architect created a landscape which allows rainwater to pour into the herb gardens. A research fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute, Diane Archer said, “ For Voraakhom􀆳s urban green spaces, not only are they designed to tackle flooding by acting as water storage spaces, but they contribute to cleaning the air and providing essential green oases in our concrete jungle, so important for mental and physical health. Even at a small scale, these parks are beneficial to the residents, and we could do with more. ” Voraakhom􀆳s designs and the lessons are now expanding beyond Thailand. “ Green climate- adapted areas are a good long-term investment for cities,” she said, “ and the best solution for the next generation. ” 5. How does Voraakhom help cities with a large population to address flooding? A. By building higher and higher dams. B. By countering the fear of residents. C. By painting landscapes for the cities. D. By using nature and water in her design. 6. What is food waste in Siam Green Sky used to do? A. To store rainwater. B. To fertilize herb gardens. C. To create a landscape. D. To be recycled by restaurants. 7. What does Archer think of Voraakhom􀆳s designs? A. They benefit the health of citizens. B. They discover green oases in cities. C. They become the biggest air cleaner. D. They increase concrete storage in cities. 8. What is the best title for the text? A. Agricultural practices in Thailand B. Thailand􀆳s efforts in tackling flooding C. The work principle of the rooftop farm D. Most people would argue that aesthetics ( 美感) are the most important. 1 However, Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio believed that we should also consider durability and function when assessing a structure. The Rostonville Library in my city is a great example of Vitruvius􀆳s principles. Constructed entirely of granite—a hard and tough stone, the library is durable. It can withstand environmental pollution. For example, it is resistant to acid rain. Moreover, its granite structure is stable so it􀆳s more likely to survive an 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 -471- hh#4 earthquake. 2 It uses solar energy for heating and a rooftop garden for cooling. 3 Providing free access to print and digital information, it conveys a feeling of openness and accessibility. Furthermore, the entire library is on one level, and it has an open design— there are no inner walls or dividers. In addition, large windows let in plenty of natural light, so it􀆳s easy to see and get to each department within the library. Finally, the library is beautiful, with aesthetically pleasing details both inside and out. The large windows are copper-framed(铜框的) . The copper color provides an interesting contrast against the color of the granite structure and it will remain as the copper ages. Growth from the rooftop garden, which reaches down the sides of the building, adds to the aesthetics of the building. 4 Durability, functionality and beauty make the Rostonville Library a great structure. Architects who follow Vitruvius􀆳s principles help to make the city more pleasant to live in. 5 A. The library is also sustainable. B. It is true that beauty is critical. C. This is not the only concern of the architects. D. The library was designed with functionality in mind. E. It softens the lines of the structure and helps it to fit into its natural surroundings. F. Plus, the library was built on the edge of the city park, surrounded by native plants. G. Buildings that fulfill these criteria offer both peace of mind and beauty for their users. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. I didn􀆳t know anything about our new building on a new street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes. I wondered if it would ever fit back together again. Mom introduced me to our new neighbors, the Chens. Mrs Chen worked with Mom at the job she􀆳d just started. Mr Chen was a famous craftsman (匠人) from China. Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me. I just wanted things to go back to how they had been before. After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom had told me she had to work. I was still hoping she􀆳d meet me after the bell. I had to open the door myself with the new key. I felt a bit hungry and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground. “Benjamin!” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn􀆳t hear her come in. “What just broke?” she asked, kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands, I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma􀆳s bowl. “ I can􀆳t believe you broke this,” she said. “Well, I can􀆳t believe we have to live here now! I can􀆳t believe I have to switch schools, and I can􀆳t believe you didn􀆳t even meet me after my first day!” I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me. The broom swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom􀆳s bedroom door closed behind her. I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together. Turning the pieces, I tried to match them, but this bowl would never look the same again. “ I􀆳m sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “ Please just throw out the pieces. We can􀆳t make a fresh start with broken things. ” As I wandered down the hall, Mr Chen was emptying his garbage. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式作答。 “Are you sure you want to throw that out?” he asked. An alert garbage man noticed the bag moving and used a metal rake (耙子) to tear open the bag to look inside. There was my shaking puppy dog. The rake damaged the nerves in his back so he limped a little, but he could run as fast as lightning. For my dog􀆳s first birthday, I entered him in a fun run sponsored by our local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ( SPCA) . I􀆳m not much of a runner, but the run was only 3 kilometers, so I thought it would be fun for both of us. We practiced for weeks. On our practice runs, he was always eager to go and usually dragged me along behind him. I worked on his leash (拴狗链) manners so that he wouldn􀆳t trip me on the big day. I felt we were ready for anything. The fun run was downtown among the big buildings, so the noise of barking dogs all around us rose to a deafening pitch at the start of the race. My dog was frightened when the starting tone went off. He had trouble running in the right direction with all the confusion around us. Soon the runners began to thin out, and my dog was running straight and fast. We were passing people and making great time. I was dreaming of a gold-medal finish. However, when we were six blocks from the finish, my dog suddenly stopped and dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. I almost dislocated my shoulder from the sudden stop as I was pulled backward by the leash. He was lying flat on his belly with his head down in the middle of the crossroads. At first I thought something bad had happened to him. He was shaking and sobbing. I did a quick check and couldn􀆳t see anything wrong. I tried to get him up, but he refused. At the core of an emotion is a subjective experience of the valence of it—what emotion scientists call “ affect ” ( 情 感 ) . Generally speaking, “ affect” is what we are most focused on. Do you have chocolate cake in front of you? That􀆳s good! Do you see a spider on the table? That􀆳s bad! Your affective reactions tell you which experiences are desirable, and which aren􀆳t, but the total emotional experience includes all you do and think. You can learn a lot by observing and describing them. You can also learn a lot by appreciating their secret life. The problem is: the affective features of emotions tend to dominate. Our subjective valence of emotion is almost all we can see. When emotions are only about what is pleasant or unpleasant in subjective experience right now, the more important features of emotion disappear. If you can slow down and expand; if you stop running or clinging (沉浸其中) and adopt a sense of curiosity, emotions become more subtle and different. When fear comes up, don􀆳t walk away so that fear dissipates. Instead, stay. Allow yourself to feel the nervousness, the sweating, and everything else that comes along with it. It is one of the hardest things to do in life, but it􀆳s also one of the most rewarding. If you run, you are telling basic parts of your brain, “ I guess this threat really was real. I better stay away from it. ” You are training yourself to fear, regardless of that situation. If you cling, you are saying, “ The escape from this emotion is a threat”, and since it is not a happy experience, happiness slips through your hands like sand. Note that you can not fool yourself. Just allow the full emotion. You will never enter into their secret life until you stop running or clinging. To control your life, you need to actively train your emotions to be your ally ( 同 盟 ) . Observe. Describe. Appreciate. Do that and you may find you have allies for healthy living that were there all along. 1. Why does the author mention “ chocolate cake” and “spider” in paragraph 1? A. To explain the complex response of emotions. B. To show the subjective experience of emotions. C. To indicate the goodness and badness of the world. D. To emphasize the significance of emotions in life. 2. What is the consequence if you just focus on your present feelings? A. The present feelings are less obvious. B. Humour has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who, in“On Nature”, disliked humour. “ Laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from a sudden thought of feeling far better than others. ” He thought humour to be a negative quality of human narrow- mindedness. However, Mordechai Gordon, PhD of Education, insists, “Humour allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious. ” I agree with Gordon. Learning to look at the world through humour is important. In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humour as a way to express their feelings, how would Americans be willing to support the election? Television shows like The Daily Show have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by unconsciously inputting politics into our mouths. They make politics fun. Of course, politics is only one type of humour. Social humour helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image. On the topic of self-image,Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group The Pussycat Dolls, describing their hit song Don􀆳t Cha as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture. A study from Loyola University of Maryland has shown that humour is one determining factor for selecting a mating partner. Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner. Of course, humour is not always used for good purposes. Humour can be linked to vulgarity (粗俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one another. Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles (皱纹) to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn􀆳t aware of. With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity and sometimes at humanity. 5. Hobbes believes that humour .
