In late September, an international team of researchers spread out across a remote New Mexico mountain range in search of a plant. The group walked through the rough landscape looking for signs of plants hugging a tree. Seven days later, the scientists left with a sample of nature’s reward: wild bean plants.
The scientists wanted to collect the legume (豆科植物), which is native to dry regions of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. “The plants have adapted to this very hot and dry climate, so they have exception al drought and heat tolerance,” said Sarah Dohle, an expert with the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
A warming planet is causing huge damage to agriculture around the globe. In the western U. S., a severe drought affected California’s tomato and rice production. In Guatemala, the combined effects of both drought and rain decreased corn and black bean harvests. In Sub-Saharan Africa, hot conditions have reduced the yields of wheat and corn by more than a third since the early 1960s.
“Crops like the wild bean could help diversify food production, and their genetic material may help make other crops more drought- and heat-tolerant,” said Richard Pratt, who is among a growing number of scientists working to look for crops adapting to climate change.
The University of California is leading a multi-state $15million project involving 20 institutions to speed up the breeding (繁殖) cycles of wheat and to research ways to help the crop grow in a toughened environment. At Auburn University in Alabama, scientists are working to breed a peanut variety that can better tolerate drought conditions. And scientists from various institutions have taken part in an effort funded by the Norwegian government to identify, collect and evaluate wild crops for future development.
Still, there are numerous challenges at play: Crop breeding is a time-intensive process, so it can be difficult for scientists to keep pace with rapidly changing weather. Advances in gene editing can help speed up the process, but come with their own trials.
“As global climate change keeps being hard on us,” Sarah said, “there isn’t plenty of time left for us to get crops that are adaptable.”
24.What is paragraph 1 intended for?
A.Sharing an inspirational story. B.Leading in the topic of the text.
C.Providing background information. D.Summarizing the main idea of the text.
25.How does the author mainly develop paragraph 3?
A.By giving examples. B.By answering questions.
C.By making comparisons. D.By listing prediction data.
26.What does Sarah Dohle imply at last?
A.Climate change is controllable. B.Crop breeding is time-consuming.
C.Efforts to plant crops prove fruitless. D.Urgent measures should be carried out.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Overlooked Wild Crops Require Preserving
B.Global Warming Influences Crops’ Adaptation
C.A Severe Drought Is Threatening Food Security
D.Scientists Are Looking for Climate-adapted Crops

For many Americans, home is where the heart is. However, some people are forced to leave their homes because of rising costs.
“Hawaii is everything. Of course, it’s very beautiful. The weather is beautiful, but you only get a deeper connection to a place when it’s connected to you,” said Lehua Kalima, who grew up and raised her kids in Hawaii.
Nearly three years ago, Kalima and her husband left the Hawaiian islands for Clark County, Nevada. According to United Van Lines, the US’s largest household goods mover, Clark County has about 20,000 native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. The Kalimas represent some of the 7 million Americans who move to a different state every year.
“You know, we were already working really hard to make ends meet, but with three college tuitions now to pay, it was almost impossible,” Kalima said.
United Van Lines has long tracked state-to-state migration, as well as the main reasons that people move. In 2018, nearly half of the people surveyed said they moved due to changes in employment. Four years later, a third of respondents said employment was the reason they moved. A rising number said they wanted to be close to family, and 8% stated a reason that three years earlier wasn’t even on the survey — the improved cost of living.
“If you have roots in a place, you have a relationship with a place, with a piece of land, only then can you really understand what it’s like to have to go away from it,” Kalima said.
Despite missing her home, Kalima looks at the other side of things.
“The things we do in life don’t necessarily keep us in one place. Sometimes they take us to all kinds of different places, but that’s necessary because, you know, that’ll take us to where we’re eventually supposed to be,”Kalima said.
28.What was the Kalimas’ life like before moving to Nevada?
A.They almost had nowhere to live.
B.They lived beyond their means.
C.Kalima and her husband lost their jobs.
D.Kalima’s children failed to get into college.
29.How does the writer illustrate the reasons for people moving to other states?
A.By contrast. B.By connection. C.By examples. D.By diagrams.
30.What feeling did Kalima express in paragraph 6?
A.Her worries about her life in Nevada.
B.Her pain of being away from home.
C.Her fear of being misunderstood by others.
D.Her dissatisfaction with new social relationships.
31.What is Kalima’s attitude to life?
A.Doubtful. B.Passive. C.Grateful. D.Positive.

Perfume (香味;香水) has held a special place in human history. The traditional making process involves collecting raw materials, producing oils, mixing, aging and quality control. For centuries, perfumers have merely relied on their own senses. But now modern-day perfumers are beginning to look beyond their noses. They are, instead, turning to neurotechnology
Perfume now can be designed to stimulate emotional responses using neuroscents (神经气味) shown by biometric measures — the use of biological data to analyze human responses — to help inspire different positive feelings such as calm, joy or sleepiness. Neurotechnology can also help perfumers analyze the chemical composition of these neuroscents and find new combinations of raw materials that can produce similar or enhanced effects.
Researcher Hugo Ferreira is trying to build a database of neuroscents. “With sight and hearing, you can imagine the face of a loved one or the favourite tune. It’s hard to imagine a smell though it can stimulate a series of emotions and memories.”
Ferreira explains this is due to the structure of the olfactory (嗅觉的) system. Messages from scent receptors are sent through the olfactory bulb to different brain areas that control everything from memory or thirst to stress reactions. Olfaction is the most diverse sense with many different receptors. It’s estimated that there are about 400 different olfactory receptor gene families. Among other things these various connections may explain how we can “smell fear, or victory.”
L’Oréal, a French multinational personal care company, has partnered with neurotechnology company Emotiv to create a scent choice “experience”. During 2023, shoppers at certain stores used a device to discover which scents appealed to them. Results so far show that 95% of customers who used the device found the right perfume. Another perfume from Givenchy, a French luxury fashion and perfume house, has been a bestseller for years, which includes a special substance chosen after biometric research.
However, perfume writer Katie Puckrik says she’d like to “design her own perfume”. “Leave the magic to the artists. Why do we need a computer to tell us what our nose already knows? Finding a new favorite scent by chance is a rare moment of grace we should allow ourselves,” she says.
32.How can neurotechnology function in the perfume-making process?
A.By distinguishing one scent from the other.
B.By exploring the best way to obtain special oil.
C.By finding the scents most appealing to people.
D.By offering perfumers information of materials.
33.What does Ferreira want to indicate in paragraph 3?
A.The close connection among our senses.
B.The great complexity of the olfactory system.
C.The relationship between emotion and memory.
D.The significance of having a good imagination.
34.Why are the perfume brands mentioned in the text?
A.To show applications of neurotechnology.
B.To collect more data for biometric research.
C.To illustrate the fierce competition between them.
D.To stress their dominance in the perfume industry.
35.What is Katie Puckrik’s attitude towards the new technology?
A.Tolerant. B.Unclear. C.Supportive. D.Negative.

There are different ways to learn and grow, but all of them involve getting feedback about how you are doing. 36 But whether it is positive or negative, it can bring a lot of value to your personal development.
Why ask for feedback? Because it is the only way you can see yourself through another person’s eyes. You can look at your own work and skills but not see the truth. Sometimes, it’s because you get used to devaluing what you do. At other times, it’s because you overestimate your own ability. 37 Here is how you can make this a regular part of your life.
You should ask other people what they think and how they see you. 38 However, making a habit of it takes the sting out of the experience and allows you to focus on what truly matters.
39 You don’ have to focus only on the bad things or what is not working. You also need to hear what is going well. What is working is as important as what is not. Don’t be afraid to ask for positive feedback, either.
There are a couple of things you can do to ensure you are getting authentic feedback. First, approach people when they are willing to talk to you. 40 Second, don’t get angry. When you ask for feedback, you might hear unpleasant things. They may be ridiculous or hurtful, but that’s fine. Thank the person and decide whether the feedback is useful or not.
A.Tell different kinds of feedback apart.
B.Hearing about yourself may cause some anxiety.
C.Be sure to request positive and negative feedback.
D.Either way, feedback is of great significance to your growth.
E.But you can’t control what feedback others choose to give you.
F.Don’t, for example, disturb them when they are rushing or have a lot of stress.
G.This can be scary because others will not just say nice things or what you want to hear.

Matthew kept staring at the clock on the classroom wall, the slowly moving second hand seemed to mock his anxiety. He was eager for the physics class to end so that he could make it on time to his painting hobby group. When the bell finally rang, Matthew bolted out of the classroom like a wild horse freed from its reins, grabbing his backpack. As he rounded the corner of the hallway, he accidentally collided with a classmate, scattering his canvas and paints all over the floor. The jumbled paint boxes burst open, mixing the colors into a bizarre patchwork. He quickly apologized, picking up everything while starting to run again, leaving a trail of colorful footprints on the floor.
After the painting hobby group session ended, Matthew hurriedly joined the other members of the school band. They had an important performance that day. As expected, Matthew was late again, his body covered in dried colorful paints and sweating profusely. He walked briskly into the backstage, changed into the band’s uniform, but the paint stains were still faintly visible. Unfortunately, Matthew had not prepared his sheet music, so he appeared distracted during the performance, often hitting wrong chords and unable to keep up with the rhythm, disappointing the team. Eventually, after a long day at school, Matthew returned home exhausted.
In his bedroom, Matthew sat at his desk, heaving a heavy sigh as he looked at the desk strewn with study books and sheet music. He needed to prepare for the upcoming exams, but he could hardly keep his eyes open. The next thing he remembered was his mother waking him up. He had fallen asleep with his head buried in the desk. As he sat up, his mother gently removed a sheet of music stuck to his cheek. She looked at her son lovingly, smoothing his messy hair.
“So,” she began, “how was school today?”
Matthew nervously looked at her, taking a deep breath. “Honestly, not too good,” he admitted sheepishly. “I couldn’t focus in class, I bumped into a classmate, and I let the band down. It couldn’t get any worse, right?”
“Well,” Matthew’s mother said gently yet seriously, “I think you’re taking on too much.”
That night, before going to bed, Matthew realized that things couldn’t go on like this.

The next day, Matthew set about making changes to his busy schedule. He knew he had to prioritize his activities to manage his time better. First, he decided to cut back on the number of days he attended the painting hobby group, limiting it to twice a week instead of daily. He also talked to his band leader about the possibility of scheduling extra practice sessions only on weekends. This would give him more time during weekdays to focus on his studies and prepare for exams. Additionally, Matthew began to wake up an hour earlier each day to review his schoolwork in the quiet morning hours, hoping this would help him stay on top of his academic responsibilities.
After Matthew put his new schedule into practice, things began to improve. With a more manageable routine, he found it easier to concentrate in class and keep up with his homework. The reduced frequency of his painting sessions allowed him to enjoy the hobby without feeling rushed, and his artwork even showed signs of improvement due to the extra care and attention he could now afford to give. At band practice, his performance steadily got better as he was no longer distracted or exhausted. The balance he struck between his commitments left him with a sense of accomplishment rather than stress. Matthew’s newfound organization skills gave him the confidence to tackle each day with renewed energy and enthusiasm, proving that sometimes, less truly is more.

【答案】17.B 18.C 19.C 20.B
M: OK, are you all settled? Well, first of all, welcome to Cardiff University. I'm here to explain what we can offer you.
Now, as a new student at the university, you will probably need some sort of guidance to help you to use the library effectively to study and research. Some of you have asked about a guided tour but we find this rather confuses people. So, in this first week, we run a series of talks which focus on different aspects of the library and its resources.
OK, now let me give you an outline of what's available to you. You'll find that the computers are increasingly used as a research tool. Many students do most of their research on the Internet and the library computers are permanently online. Having found what you need, you'll find you can readily save texts on your personal computer space to print off when you need.
Naturally we do still have the full range of classic reference books for you to use and there arc several copies of each one. This is because some of you may prefer to borrow a book rather than sit in the library. There is a restricted loan time on these so that they are not missing from the shelves for too long. Although there is a Section Manager for each part of the library, they are very busy and so, if you do get stuck looking for things, you should ask the relevant Cataloguing Assistant. As your Training Supervisor, I just oversee your work for a week and will not be around after this initial week.

“The plants have adapted to this very hot and dry climate, so they have exceptional drought and heat tolerance,” said Sarah Dohle, an expert with the U.
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.D 27.D
根据第一段“In late September, an international team of researchers spread out across a remote New Mexico mountain range in search of a plant. The group walked through the rough landscape looking for signs of plants hugging a tree. Seven days later, the scientists left with a sample of nature’s reward: wild bean plants.(9月下旬,一个国际研究小组在新墨西哥州偏远的山脉上寻找一种植物。这群人走过崎岖不平的风景,寻找植物拥抱树木的迹象。七天后,科学家们带着大自然的奖励样本离开了:野生豆类植物)”以及第四段““Crops like the wild bean could help diversify food production, and their genetic material may help make other crops more drought- and heat-tolerant,” said Richard Pratt, who is among a growing number of scientists working to look for crops adapting to climate change.(“像野生豆类这样的作物可以帮助粮食生产多样化,它们的遗传物质可能有助于使其他作物更耐旱和耐热,”理查德普拉特说,他是越来越多的科学家之一,致力于寻找适应气候变化的作物)”可推断,第一段旨在导入本文的中心话题:寻找能适应气候变化的农作物。故选B。
根据第三段“A warming planet is causing huge damage to agriculture around the globe. In the western U. S., a severe drought affected California’s tomato and rice production. In Guatemala, the combined effects of both drought and rain decreased corn and black bean harvests. In Sub-Saharan Africa, hot conditions have reduced the yields of wheat and corn by more than a third since the early 1960s.(全球变暖正在对全球农业造成巨大损害。在美国西部,严重的干旱影响了加州的番茄和水稻生产。在危地马拉,干旱和降雨的共同影响导致玉米和黑豆的收成减少。在撒哈拉以南的非洲,自20世纪60年代初以来,炎热的气候使小麦和玉米的产量减少了三分之一以上)”可知,第三段主要列举了三个地区的农作物产量情况来说明气候变暖对农业的影响。故选A。
根据最后一段““As global climate change keeps being hard on us,” Sarah said, “there isn’t plenty of time left for us to get crops that are adaptable.”(“随着全球气候变化对我们的影响越来越大,”萨拉说,“留给我们种植适应性强的作物的时间已经不多了。”)”

C
A.Doubtful. B.Passive. C.Grateful. D.Positive.
根据第四段““You know, we were already working really hard to make ends meet, but with three college tuitions now to pay, it was almost impossible,” Kalima said. (“你知道,我们已经非常努力地工作以维持收支平衡,但现在要支付三所大学的学费,这几乎是不可能的,”Kalima说。)”可知,Kalima说她家经济困难,入不敷出。beyond one’s means“入不敷出”。故选B。
根据第四段““You know, we were already working really hard to make ends meet, but with three college tuitions now to pay, it was almost impossible,” Kalima said. (“你知道,我们已经非常努力地工作以维持收支平衡,但现在要支付三所大学的学费,这几乎是不可能的,”Kalima说。)”和第五段“United Van Lines has long tracked state-to-state migration, as well as the main reasons that people move. In 2018, nearly half of the people surveyed said they moved due to changes in employment. Four years later, a third of respondents said employment was the reason they moved. A rising number said they wanted to be close to family, and 8% stated a reason that three years earlier wasn’t even on the survey — the improved cost of living.
根据第六段““If you have roots in a place, you have a relationship with a place, with a piece of land, only then can you really understand what it’s like to have to go away from it,” Kalima said. (Kalima说:“如果你在一个地方扎了根,你和一个地方、一块土地有了关系,只有这样你才能真正理解不得不离开的感觉。”)”可知,Kalima说只有和一个地方有深厚情感的人,才能真正理解不得不离开它的感觉,表达了她不得不远离家乡的痛苦心情。故选B。
31.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Despite missing her home, Kalima looks at the other side of things. (尽管想念她的家,但Kalima看到了事情的另一面)”和最后一段““The things we do in life don’t necessarily keep us in one place. Sometimes they take us to all kinds of different places, but that’s necessary because, you know, that’ll take us to where we’re eventually supposed to be,”Kalima said. (“我们在生活中所做的事情不一定会让我们停留在一个地方。有时它们带我们去各种不同的地方,但这是必要的,因为,你知道,这将把我们带到我们最终应该去的地方,”Kalima说。)”可知,Kalima尽管思念家乡,但她认为,生活中的一些变化导致我们去不同的地方,这是必要的,因为它们会带我们去我们最终该去的地方,由此推断,Kalima对生活抱着积极的态度。故选D。
D
【答案】32.C 33.B 34.A 35.D
根据第一段中“ But now modern-day perfumers are beginning to look beyond their noses. They are, instead, turning to neurotechnology (神经技术).(但现在,现代调香师开始把目光投向鼻子之外。相反,他们转向了神经技术。)”和第二段“Perfume now can be designed to stimulate emotional responses using neuroscents (神经气味) shown by biometric measures — the use of biological data to analyze human responses — to help inspire different positive feelings such as calm, joy or sleepiness. Neurotechnology can also help perfumers analyze the chemical composition of these neuroscents and find new combinations of raw materials that can produce similar or enhanced effects. (香水现在可以被设计成使用生物特征测量显示的神经官能症来刺激情绪反应,即使用生物数据来分析人类反应,以帮助激发不同的积极情绪,如平静、快乐或嗜睡。神经技术还可以帮助调香师分析这些神经官能症的化学成分,并找到可以产生类似或增强效果的原材料的新组合。)”可知,神经技术通过寻找最吸引人的气味在香水制作过程中发挥作用。故选C项。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段中Ferreira所说“With sight and hearing, you can imagine the face of a loved one or the favourite tune. It’s hard to imagine a smell though it can stimulate a series of emotions and memories. (有了视觉和听觉,你可以想象所爱之人的脸或最喜欢的曲调。很难想象一种气味,尽管它能激发一系列的情绪和记忆。)”以及第四段中“Ferreira explains this is due to the structure of the olfactory (嗅觉的) system.( Ferreira解释说,这是由于嗅觉系统的结构。)”
根据第五段中“L’Oréal, a French multinational personal care company, has partnered with neurotechnology company Emotiv to create a scent choice “experience”. (法国跨国个人护理公司欧莱雅与神经技术公司Emotiv合作,创造了一种气味选择‘体验’。2023年,某些商店的购物者使用一种设备来发现哪些气味吸引了他们。到目前为止的结果显示,使用该设备的客户中有95%找到了合适的香水。法国奢侈时尚和香水品牌纪梵希的另一款香水多年来一直是畅销品,其中包括一种经过生物识别研究选择的特殊物质。)”可知,提到了香水品牌是为了展示神经技术的应用。故选A项。
根据最后一段中Katie Puckrik所说“Leave the magic to the artists. Why do we need a computer to tell us what our nose already knows? Finding a new favorite scent by chance is a rare moment of grace we should allow ourselves.(把神奇留给艺术家吧。为什么我们需要电脑来告诉我们鼻子已经知道的东西?偶然发现一种新的喜欢的气味是我们应该允许自己享受的难得的优雅时刻。)”可知,Katie Puckrik对这项新技术的态度是消极的。故选D项。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】36.B 37.D 38.G 39.C 40.F

37.空前“Why ask for feedback? Because it is the only way you can see yourself through another person’s eyes. You can look at your own work and skills but not see the truth. Sometimes, it’s because you get used to devaluing what you do. At other times, it’s because you overestimate your own ability.(为什么要寻求反馈?因为只有这样,你才能通过别人的眼睛看到自己。你可以看到自己的工作和技能,但看不到真相。有时候,是因为你习惯了贬低自己的价值。有时候,这是因为你高估了自己的能力。)”说明的是要获得反馈的原因,D选项“Either way, feedback is of great significance to your growth.(无论哪种方式,反馈对你的成长都非常重要。)”
38.空前“You should ask other people what they think and how they see you.(你应该问问别人对你的看法和他们如何看待你。)”说明了你应该问别人对自己的看法,空格处应该对这一做法进行评论,结合空后的“However, making a habit of it takes the sting out of the experience and allows you to focus on what truly matters.(然而,养成这样的习惯可以让你从痛苦中解脱出来,让你专注于真正重要的事情。)”可知,此空讲述的内容与空后的内容为转折关系,G选项“This can be scary because others will not just say nice things or what you want to hear.(这可能是可怕的,因为其他人不会只说好话或你想听的话。)”
39.空格处是本段主题句,空后“You don’ have to focus only on the bad things or what is not working. You also need to hear what is going well.(你不必只关注不好的事情。你还需要了解进展顺利的地方。)”说明了既要关注不好的方面,也要关注好的方面,C选项“Be sure to request positive and negative feedback.(一定要要求积极和消极的反馈。)”
40.空前“First, approach people when they are willing to talk to you.(首先,在人们愿意和你说话的时候接近他们。)”说明了在人们愿意和你说话的时候接触对方,空格处应该说在得到他人反馈时的正确做法,F选项“Don’t, for example, disturb them when they are rushing or have a lot of stress.(例如,当他们赶时间或有很大压力时,不要打扰他们。)”

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

After Matthew put his new schedule into practice, things began to improve.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
