If you’re a typical human being, the answer is probably very rarely. For most of our days, our attention is focused on external things—the tasks of our jobs, TV programs, or social media interactions. In the moments when our attention isn’t focused externally, it’s usually focused on what is called “thought-chatter”—a stream of mental associations consisting of expectations of the future, memories, daydreams, and so on. But from time to time, we all experience moments when our thought-chatter quiets down, or even disappears altogether. In these moments, we experience a sense of great well-being. We feel a sense of inner harmony. We feel as if we’re free of problems, and feel satisfied with our lives as they are. There are many activities that have the effect of quieting our minds, and so produce a state of well-being. For example, think about what happens when you go walking in the countryside. You might feel stressed when you start out, but slowly, after a couple of miles, your mind begins to settle down. The beauty and stillness of nature attracts your attention and you’re no longer in your thought-chatter. By the end of the walk you feel almost like a different person. You feel more alive, and much happier—largely because your mind is now quiet. This is why people love to look at beautiful works of art. When people see the paintings of Monet or van Gogh, they experience a mind-stopping moment, in which they’re taken out of their thinking minds and experience a sense of great well-being. The strange thing is, though, that most of the time this happens unconsciously We usually don’t associate this well-being with a quiet mind. And we usually don’t think of a quiet mind as the aim or result of these activities. Our estimate of how enjoyable an activity is may depend on its mind-stopping capacity. In other words, the very best performances—and the most rewarding activities—are those which are so attractive and intense that they can completely stop our minds. I’m not saying that inner quietness is the only reason why we enjoy these activities. Nevertheless, we should certainly become more aware of the association of a quiet mind with well-being. And at the same time we should be aware that it’s possible for us to consciously and directly create a quiet mind; rather than as a byproduct of certain activities. And in the end we might develop a permanent quiet mind and attain a state of ongoing contentment and harmony. 24.What can be inferred about thought-chatter? A.It requires a lot of practice. B.It might be unpleasant at times. C.It might be a talk with a friend. D.It helps reach a state of silence. 25.What are the examples of activities mentioned in the text mainly about? A.What activities lead to well-being. B.What can be done to reduce stress. C.How we can make our minds quiet. D.How mental quietness leads to well-being. 26.How can we determine how much pleasure an activity can give us? A.By judging how much stress it can increase. B.By judging whether it takes place unconsciously. C.By judging to what extent it can quiet our minds. D.By judging whether it associates with well-being. 27.What does the author intend to highlight in the last paragraph? A.Creating a quiet mind for all time. B.Living a peaceful life permanently. C.Being in harmony with inner quietness. D.Participating in activities for inner quietness. C Clair Hughes first began to research money-saving ideas to get out of her £3,500 student overdraft (透支额). The shopper started surfing the Internet for discount coupons (优惠券) and cut price offers. Revealing how she seldom pays full price for an item, Ms Hughes says, “Discounts are always there; it’s just a matter of being organized. Before starting this, I thought it’d be much work, but now I’m so used to this lifestyle that it’s automatic to me. I must have easily saved over £15,000.” Ms Hughes first focused on saving money back in 2010, when she moved in with her partner, Shane Byrne, a phone company trainer. After turning to the web for advice, she tried out a few clever money-saving tricks like switching her overdraft to a zero-interest account. Then, several years later, she came across an online community for “couponers” and decided to give it a go. She started spending hours surfing the web for coupons, printing them all out to take with her whenever she went shopping. Over the years, she has managed to get some impressive catches. Once, two lamps worth £140 cost her just £35. Two years ago, Ms Hughes also began using cashback apps where you are given money back on items ranging from beers to toiletries. After each shop, she uploads pictures of her receipts, which are then scanned, and money is given back on certain items. Among her other top money-saving tips, Ms Hughes recommends taking part in paid online surveys, which have earned her hundreds in discount coupons. She says, “I’ve heard a lot about collecting other people’s abandoned receipts from shopping trolleys to check for missed discounts. I can’t believe how much coupons and cashback apps have helped me. The community does benefit me a lot. There will always be someone on hand to explain how it works.” 28.What does saving money mean to Clair Hughes? A.It’s part of her daily life. Among her regulars are athletes. Cathy thrives on the variety, with each new sport providing new challenges and a renewed appreciation of her chosen field of expertise. In her view, dealing with athletes from various sport backgrounds helps her become seasoned, which is a key part of being a successful nutritionist. “You have to understand nutrition and people, and then you can begin to work in this field,” she says. “Besides, in tennis you must learn to be reactive, because you don’t know how long the match lasts. However, it’s 90 minutes in football. So you know what you’re fueling for.” Regardless of the sport, Cathy’s attitude remains the same any athlete failing to respect nutrition is one who is failing to fulfill their potential. It’s a key part of the training process. It’s not just something that you take casually. She advises her athletes to hold nutrition in the same regard as they do their most crucial bit of equipment. “Just as you wouldn’t forget to put your shin pads(护腿板)or your boots in your kit bag, don’t forget to put in your drinks and your snacks. That informs how well you train, because you can’t get out if you haven’t put in.” Nutritionists are sometimes unfairly represented as militant(斗志昂扬的)types telling what athletes can and can’t eat. But Cathy insists that when to eat is more important than what. “It’s about when’s the right time to have it in,” she says. It’s a message that Cathy says can take a while to sink in. “A lot of boxers say, ‘but bananas make you fat, right?’, and there’s this inherent belief that we mustn’t eat those kinds of things. But it’s not about what to cut out. It’s about making sure that you’ve got the foundation right for health and performance. It’s that one size fits one. It’s what works for you. To be an excellent athlete, you really need to be an exceptional eater.” 32.What does Cathy think about her job? A.It highly values experience and flexibility. B.It mainly focuses on the duration of matches. C.It merely needs to understand nutrition and people. D.It hardly faces new challenges in every competition. 33.How does Cathy emphasize the importance of nutrition to athletes? A.By telling a story. B.By making a comparison. C.By providing data. D.By analyzing a phenomenon. 34.According to Cathy, what is a fundamental principle behind successful sports nutrition? A.Focusing on the timing of the diet. B.Increasing the variety of foods. C.Following a strict and militant diet plan. D.Cutting out specific foods from the diet. 35.What does the author intend to tell us? A.A good eater is a great athlete. Rumor was that they sat inside and drank tea all day. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!” Our house was situated just a stone’s throw away from theirs, separated by a stretch of land covered in the most vibrant rosebushes. The rosebushes served as a fence between our house and theirs. I was eleven at the time and the oldest of six active girls. Despite the warnings, my sisters and I would often find ourselves drawn to the allure of mischief. We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, far from the reach of Jack and Ruby’s watchful eyes, but we secretly delighted in annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. The day of the incident was like any other, filled with the laughter and energy of youth. Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She stumbled (绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more. Just at that moment, Ruby Rednose emerged. Her voice, usually reserved, now echoed through the yard, laden with pain and fury, “Look at what you’ve done to our roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what this rosebush means to me!” Scared to death, my sisters and I quickly ran back into our house. Breathlessly, I told Mom what had happened. Mom responded with a mixture of anger and disappointment, “Girls, how many times have I told you not to play softball near those bushes? Come and help me fix them right now, ” she commanded. “Mom, we thought you didn’t like the couple, we protested. “They’re mean to us.” Mom rushed out of the house without saying a word. Out we rushed immediately to follow her to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked closer. She looked sad. C.Meeting the buyer at a private place. 20.How will the seller be banned from the website? A.By presenting personal information. B.By providing false accounts of products. C.By selling products at an unreasonable price. 【答案】17.A 18.B 19.C 20.B 【原文】M: Selling your things online helps you get rid of those you don't need, and it can also be a great source of income. One thing you need to consider carefully is the platform on which you are going to advertise. Most big platforms in the field are so popular with sellers, not just because they can give you access to a bigger pool of potential customers, but also because they offer insurance, both to the seller and the buyer. The disadvantage, however, is that you will need to pay some money for using the platform. You can use some platforms that either charge a smaller fee for advertising or even no fee at all. But in that case, what you will need to keep in mind is your safety, especially if the value of the product you're selling is high. It's always best to meet the buyer during the day at a public place such as a coffee shop, a library, or a supermarket parking lot anywhere monitored by security cameras is good. A few more things to keep in mind: always be accurate with your descriptions of the things you are selling. The last thing you want is to be accused of cheating and banned from the website. Moreover, be careful with your personal information: do not give away your full name, home address or cell phone number unless you have to, and have a separate e-mail address for selling online .Remember that a smart, prepared seller is a happy seller. 第二部分 阅读(共两节, 满分50分) 第一节(共15小题:每小题2.5分, 满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A Four Top Audiobook (有声读物) Apps Scribd If you’re looking to combine your audiobook listening with e-books and news publications, Scribd might be the app for you. The strange thing is, though, that most of the time this happens unconsciously (不知不觉地). We usually don’t associate this well-being with a quiet mind. 【答案】24.B 25.D 26.C 27.A 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要探讨了内心宁静与心理健康的关系,指出通过欣赏艺术和在自然中行走等活动,可以使思维静止,带来幸福感和内心和谐,并提出有意识地创造宁静心境可以带来持久的满足感。 24.推理判断题。根据第二段的“But from time to time, we all experience moments when our thought-chatter quiets down, or even disappears altogether. In these moments, we experience a sense of great well-being. We feel a sense of inner harmony. We feel as if we’re free of problems, and feel satisfied with our lives as they are. (但时不时地,我们都会经历这样的时刻:我们的“思想闲聊”安静下来,甚至完全消失。在这些时刻,我们体验到一种巨大的幸福感。我们感受到内心的和谐。我们觉得好像没有问题了,对我们的生活感到满意。)”可知,“思想闲聊”停下来时人们会感到快乐,因此它的发生有时可能会令人不愉快。故选B。 25.推理判断题。根据第四段的“For example, think about what happens when you-go walking in the countryside. You might feel stressed when you start out, but slowly, after-a couple of miles, your mind begins to settle down. The beauty and stillness of nature attracts your attention and you’re no longer in your thought-chatter. By the end of the walk you feel almost like a different person. You feel more alive, and much happier—largely because your mind is now quiet. 根据倒数第二段的“Our estimate of how enjoyable an activity is may depend on its mind-stopping capacity. In other words, the very best performances—and the most rewarding activities—are those which are so attractive and intense that they can completely stop our minds. (我们对一项活动有多愉快的估计可能取决于它让人停止思考的能力。换句话说,最好的表现和最有回报的活动是那些非常有吸引力和激烈的,它们可以完全停止我们的思想。)”可知,那些可以完全让我们停止思考的活动被认为是非常愉快和有益的,因此,我们对一项活动的享受取决于它在多大程度上能让我们的头脑平静下来。故选C。 27.推理判断题。根据最后一段的“I’m not saying that inner quietness is the only reason why we enjoy these activities. A。 C Clair Hughes first began to research money-saving ideas to get out of her £3,500 student overdraft (透支额). B.It makes her shop less. C.It’s a way to leave school. D.It keeps her work organized. 29.What can we know about Clair Hughes? A.She always asks Shane for suggestions. B.She likes going shopping with her friends. C.She has bought some goods in low prices. D.She is good at discussing prices with others. 30.What does the last paragraph mainly show? A.Hughes’ feelings of her life. B.Hughes’ ways to get coupons. C.Hughes’ appreciation for society. D.Hughes’ difficulty in saving money. 31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.A Graduate Enjoys Shopping B.A Community Collects Coupons C.A Woman Focuses on Saving Money D.A Shopper Is Famous for Saving Money 【答案】28.A 29.C 30.B 31.C 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Clair Hughes研究省钱妙招,通过网络搜寻优惠券和返现应用,精打细算,累积节省过万英镑,告别学生透支生活,大大受益于这一节俭生活方式。 28.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Before starting this, I thought it’d be much work, but now I’m so used to this lifestyle that it’s automatic to me.(在这之前,我以为这会是很繁重的工作,但现在我已经如此习惯这种生活方式,以至于它对我而言已经成了自然而然的事情)”可知,省钱已经成为她日常生活的一部分。故选A。 29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Over the years, she has managed to get some impressive catches. Once, two lamps worth £140 cost her just £35.(多年来,她设法获得了一些令人印象深刻的便宜货。有一次,她只花了35英镑就买到了两盏价值140英镑的灯)”可知,她以低价购买了一些商品。故选C。 30.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Among her other top money-saving tips, Ms Hughes recommends taking part in paid online surveys, which have earned her hundreds in discount coupons.(在她的其他顶级省钱技巧中,Hughes女士推荐参与有偿在线调查,这已为她赢得了数百张折扣券)”可知,最后一段主要介绍了她获取优惠券的方法。故选B。 31.主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Clair Hughes first began to research money-saving ideas to get out of her £3,500 student overdraft (透支额). The shopper started surfing the Internet for discount coupons (优惠券) and cut price offers.(Clair Hughes最初开始研究省钱的方法,以便摆脱3,500英镑的学生透支问题。这位购物者开始上网搜寻折扣券和降价优惠)”和最后一段中“Among her other top money-saving tips, Ms Hughes recommends taking part in paid online surveys, which have earned her hundreds in discount coupons.(在她的其他顶级省钱技巧中,Hughes女士推荐参与有偿在线调查,这已为她赢得了数百张折扣券)”可知,全文写了Clair Hughes如何通过各种方式在购物中最大限度地省钱的故事,所以“一个女人专注于省钱”适合作为文章标题。故选C。 D Cathy Winston is a sports nutritionist. A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life. My mother and Ruby worked together on the roses all summer and many summers to follow. So did my sisters and I. A friendship was formed between the families. Ruby became part of our family, spending many happy hours at our house, especially during countless birthdays, graduations and weddings. And the rose fence wasn’t a fence any longer. My mother had turned it into a bridge. 词汇激活 行为类 ①大喊:shout/yell/scream ②修整:fix/restore ③蹲下来:be down on one’s knees/kneel down/crouch down 情绪类 ①含着泪微笑: smile through one’s tears/show a smile full of tears ②愉快的时光:happy/joyful/enjoyable hours 【点睛】[高分句型1] We waited to see who would shout first and what terrible things would be said.
