Reading and Thinking THE NIGHT THE EARTH DIDN’T SLEEP Strange things were happening in the countryside of northeastern Hebei. For several days, the water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell. There were deep cracks that appeared in the well walls. At least one well had some smelly gas coming out of it. Chickens and even pigs were too nervous to eat, and dogs refused to go inside buildings. Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide, and fish jumped out of the water. At about 3:00 a.m., on 28 July 1976, bright lights were seen in the sky outside the city of Tangshan and loud noises were heard. But the city’s one million people were asleep as usual that night. Strange things were happening in the countryside. The water in the village wells rose and fell. The water in the village wells rose and fell. There were deep cracks that appeared in the well walls.  Come out (出现) · 变形:comes out, came out, coming out · 例句:Some smelly gas came out of the well. Dogs refused to go inside buildings.  Run out (跑出来)(用光耗尽) · 变形:runs out, ran out, running out · 例句:Mice ran out of the fields. What happened to the old house? The accident happened suddenly and took everyone by surprise.  Rise · Rise and shine: It's time to rise and shine; we have a busy day ahead. · Rise to the occasion: She really rose to the occasion during the emergency. I often fall asleep while reading a book. The old building began to fall apart after years of neglect.  Appear · Appear to be: 显得,似乎 · 例句:The situation appears to be under control now. · Appear on stage: 登台 · 例句:The famous actor will appear on stage tonight.  Come out · Come out of: 从…… She finally came out of her shell and spoke to the group. · Come out with: 发布,发表 · 例句:The company came out with a new product last month.  Refuse · Refuse to do: 拒绝做 · 例句:He refused to do the task because he found it unfair.  Run out · Run out of: 用尽 · 例句:We ran out of milk, so we need to go to the store. · Run out the clock: The team tried to run out the clock in the final minutes of the game. I haven’t heard from her in weeks. · Hear about/of: 听说 · 例句:Did you hear about the new restaurant opening downtown? Nearly one third of the whole nation felt it! A huge crack, eight kilometres long and 30 metres wide, cut across houses, roads, and waterways. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In less than one minute, a large city lay in ruins. Two thirds of the people who lived there were dead or injured. Thousands of children were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or badly injured in the quake was more than 400,000. At 3:42 a.m., everything began to shake. The quake even caused damage more than 150 kilometres away.  Cut across (切穿) · 变形:cuts across, cut across, cutting across · 例句:A huge crack cut across houses, roads, and waterways. In less than one minute, a large city lay in ruins. Thousands of children were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or badly injured was more than 400,000. Her hands shook with fear. The news of the scandal really shook up the community. It seems like it’s going to rain soon. · Seem to be: 似乎是 · 例句:He seems to be very tired today.  Begin · Begin with: 从…… Let’s begin with a brief overview of the project. She began to cry when she heard the news. The storm caused damage to several buildings. The celebrity’s surprise visit caused a stir among the fans.  Feel · Feel like doing: It feels like summer today. · Feel sorry for: 对…… I feel sorry for anyone who missed the concert. The film’s themes cut across cultures and resonate with audiences worldwide. Her research cuts across fields such as medicine and engineering.  Lay · Lay the foundation: The new policies lay the foundation for economic growth. Don’t lay the blame on others without knowing the facts.  Be · Be in charge: She will be in charge of the project from now on. · Be aware of: 意识到 · 例句:You need to be aware of the deadlines for the assignment.  Leave · Leave a mark: The experience left a mark on her that she would never forget. He decided to leave behind his old job and start a new career. We played games to kill time while waiting for the train. · Kill two birds with one stone: By going to the conference, he killed two birds with one stone: he learned about new developments and networked with industry peers. Everywhere survivors looked, there was nothing but ruins. Nearly everything in the city was destroyed. About 75 percent of the city’s factories and buildings, 90 percent of its homes, and all of its hospitals were gone. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves, but no wind could blow them away. Most bridges had fallen or were not safe to cross. The railway tracks were now useless pieces of metal. Tens of thousands of cows, hundreds of thousands of pigs, and millions of chickens were dead. Sand now filled the wells instead of water. People were in shock—and then, later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan again. Even more buildings fell down. Water, food, and electricity were hard to get. People began to wonder how long the disaster would last. Nearly everything in the city was destroyed.  Be gone (消失,没了) · 变形:is gone, was gone, have gone · 例句:About 75 percent of the city’s factories and buildings were gone. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves.  Blow away (吹走) · 变形:blows away, blew away, blowing away · 例句:No wind could blow them away. Most bridges had fallen or were not safe to cross.  Be useful (有用) · 变形:is useful, was useful, are useful · 例句:The railway tracks were now useless pieces of metal. Sand now filled the wells instead of water. Later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan again.  Fall down (倒塌) · 变形:falls down, fell down, falling down · 例句:Even more buildings fell down. People began to wonder how long the disaster would last. She is looking for her lost keys. Look out for the icy patches on the road. The fire destroyed the building completely. He tried to destroy the evidence to avoid being caught.  Be gone · Be gone for good: 永远消失 · 例句:After the storm, the power was gone for good. · Be gone without a trace: The missing files were gone without a trace.  Cover · Cover with: 用…… She covered the cake with a layer of frosting. They tried to cover up the mistake, but it was too late.  Blow away · Blow away by: 被…… The strong winds blew away the debris. · Blow away the competition: The new product really blew away the competition in the market. The old chair began to fall apart after years of use. If you don’t keep up with the lessons, you might fall behind.  Be useful · Be useful for: 对…… This tool will be useful for fixing the car. · Be of use: 有用 · 例句:His advice was of great use during the project. Please fill out the application form carefully. · Fill with: 被…… The well filled with sand after the storm. They shook hands after signing the agreement. The CEO’s sudden resignation shook up the entire company.  Fall down · Fall down on: 在…… The plan fell down on its execution. · Fall down from: 从…… She fell down from the ladder while cleaning the windows.  Get · Get rid of: 摆脱 · 例句:They need to get rid of all the old furniture. · Get by: 勉强过活 · 例句:With his small salary, he can only get by.  Wonder · Wonder about: 对…… I wonder about the future of renewable energy. I wonder if she will come to the party.
