Many people are fond of volcanoes, but few are willing to be faced with extremely high temperatures by themselves. However, Katia and Maurice, a French couple, are the exception. Over the last couple of decades, they have followed eruptions and approached dangerous lava (岩浆) and poisonous gases, documenting their discoveries with amazing photography and mind-blowing imagery.
The couple met by chance on a bench at the university of Strasbourg in 1960s, and soon they formed a bond through the shared fascination for volcanoes. On graduating, they devoted themselves to various pursuits of volcanic observation without any financial support. They hit the road with limited budget and pure love for fire.
The journey has been full of danger and excitement. In order to get the precious first-hand information, they risked their lives to brave the heat and falling rocks, getting closer to the danger than anyone else. Consequently, they have photographed the eruption of many volcanoes up-close and personal, such as the At Umari Volcano and the Cape Columbia Volcano. These incredible set of photographs attracted public officials'. attention, which later helped the couple to acquire government funds to visit hundreds, if not thousands, of volcanoes all over the globe.
In June 1991, along with 40 other people, the couple set out to film the eruption at Mount Unzen in Japan. Unfortunately, Katia and Maurice lost their lives as they were researching potential volcanic events to warn people in the area to evacuate (撤离). Later investigation revealed that Katia's and Maurice's bodies were closest to the volcano crater.
In 2022, their story was adapted into a documentary called Fire of Love by Sara Dosa, an award-winning director. And one of the audience commented, “I was fascinated by the achievement of the couple. This was all done before the arrival of drones (无人机) and remote sensors which are used today to study volcanoes.”
4. What distinguishes the French couple from other volcano lovers?
A. They were well-educated volcano experts.
B. They were willing to put themselves at risk.
C. They were skillful at taking pictures of volcanoes.
D. They successfully avoided being hurt by lava and gases.
5. What did the couple do along their volcano journey?
A. They attempted to save lives from future volcanic events.
B. They required the financial support from the government.
C. They were closer to At Umari Volcano than anybody else.
D. They recorded the whole journey to make it into a documentary.
6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A The audience was motivated to study volcanoes.
B. The couple invented drones and remote sensors for research.
C. The couple lived in an era that lacked advanced tech-products.
D The couple were more capable than drones and remote sensors.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Katia and Maurice?
A. Dedicated and cautious. B. Risk-taking and mysterious.
C. Passionate and adventurous. D. Considerate and peace-loving.
C
Human experts spend years roasting and tasting coffee from many places to learn about the beans. They might then combine (混合) a coffee bean from Africa with another one from South America to come up with a new blend (混合). But, a coffee roasting company in Helsinki, Finland is hoping that artificial intelligence, or AI, can help ease the workload.
Kaffa Roastery recently brought out its “AI-conic” blend at the Helsinki Coffee Festival. The blend is a mixture of four kinds of beans, including Fazenda Pinhal from Brazil. It is the result of a joint project by Kaffa and Elev, a local AI business.
Svante Hampf is the founder of Kaffa Roastery. He and his partners wanted to do an experiment to see what blend the computer would produce. “We basically gave descriptions of all our coffee types and their flavours to AI and instructed it to create a new exciting blend,” Hamp f said. The “AI-conic” blend combined beans from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and Guatemala. It is described as “a well-balanced blend of sweetness and ripe fruit”.
Hampf said he thought the combination was “somewhat weird”. He was surprised that the AI programme chose to make the blend out of four different kinds of beans. Most humans choose only two or three beans. However, after the first blind test of the new blend, Kaffa’s coffee experts agreed that the AI-assisted blend was perfect. There was no need to change.
Elev’s Antti Merilehto said “AI-conic” is an example of “how AI can introduce new viewpoint to experienced professionals”. The International Coffee Organization says that the 5.6 million people in Finland drink the most coffee per person in the world. And the roasters at Kaffa said they hope the AI project will help to bring more things to the strong coffee culture in the country.
Hamp f called it a “first step”, adding, “I think AI has plenty to offer us in the long run. We are particularly impressed of the coffee taste descriptions it created.”
8. What is the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To point out a problem. B. To present a finding.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To call for a decision.
9. What can we learn about the “AI-conic” blend?
A. It is now in mass production. B. It comes in a variety of fruit flavours.
C. It is sweeter than other coffee. D. It combines beans from four countries.
10. What does the underlined word “weird” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Strange. B. Great. C. Ordinary. D. Strong.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. AI Robots Help Make Perfect Coffee
B. A New Coffee Blend Wins People’s Love
C. AI Tries Hand at Blending Coffee in Finland
D. AI Projects Are Widely Used in Different Fields

Before the Internet age, critical thinking was the most important skill of people. But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a famous psychologist, a more important skill is critical ignoring..
As researchers point out we live in an attention economy where content producers on the Internet compete for our attention. They attract us with many eye-catching stories while providing little useful information, so they can expose us to profit-generating advertisements. Therefore, we are not customers but products, and each link we click is a sale of our time and attention. To protect ourselves from this, Kozyreva advocates (提倡) for learning the skill of critical ignoring, in which readers can control their information environment to reduce exposure to raise information.
According to Kozyreva, critical ignoring includes three strategies. The first is to design our environments, which includes removing low-quality yet hard-to-resist (难以抵制的) information from around. Successful dieters need to keep unhealthy food out of their homes. Similarly, we need to set up a digital environment where attention-grabbing items are kept out of sight. Like dieting, if one tries to depend on willpower not to click eye-catching "news", he'll surely fail. So, it's better to keep them out of sight at first!
The next is to evaluate the reliability (可靠性) of information, whose purpose is to protect you from false information. It can be realized by checking the source in the mainstream, news agencies, which are trustworthy.
The last is: "never feed the trolls." Trolls are some people who spread false information online to cause harm. Do not correct them, because they do not care about whether the information is correct. Annoying others is their goal. So, never respond to their bad behaviour with our attention.
By using the above critical ignoring skills, we can make the most of the Internet while avoiding falling victim to those who try to control our attention, time, and minds.
12. What can we learn about the attention economy from paragraph 2?
A. It offers more information. B. It features depressing stories.
C. It saves time for Internet users. D. It seeks profits from each click.
13. Why does the author mention dieters in paragraph 3?
A. To discuss the quality of information. B. To prove the benefits of healthy food.
C. To show the importance of environments. D. To explain the effectiveness of willpower.
14. What should we do to deal with Internet trolls according to the text?
A. Review their intention. B. Turn a deaf ear to them..
C. Correct their behaviour. D. Send hard facts to them.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Reasons for critical thinking in the attention economy.
B Practising the skills of critical ignoring in the digital age.
C. Maximizing the benefits of critical ignoring on the Internet.
D. Strategies of abandoning critical thinking for Internet users.

第三节 读后续写(满分20分)
52. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a cold, snowy evening. Tommy was running as fast as he could, focused on nothing but his destination----the shop on the street corner. Two weeks ago he saw figurines(小塑像) of Marvel superheroes on the shelves and felt he had to have one. He’s been walking the neighbor’s dog ever since then to earn money to fulfil his little dream. He was so excited and barely noticing the world around him. Maybe that’s why he tripped over the legs of a homeless woman, who was sitting on the pavement, her back against the wall. He murmured(低语) "sorry" and moved on to his destination.
Once he entered the shop, he went straight to the shelves with figurines. Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and many more----all of his admired heroes. With his heart pounding like crazy he reached for Spiderman.
“You like these, true believer?”
Tommy turned around. An old man was standing behind him with a wide smile on his face.
“Y-yes, …Yes, they’re awesome!” answered Tommy. “They’re strong and fast and help other people a lot ...”the boy looked at figurines in admiration. “I wish I could be a superhero too.”
“Then become one!” said the old man.
“How?” Tommy asked in surprise. “I don’t have any superpowers.”
“And why would you need them?” the old man smiled. Seeing the confusion on the boy's face, he squatted(蹲下) and put his hands on Tommy's arms. “Did you know that shopkeeper lady over there has a disabled husband? She’s been working hard and taking care of him for years. I’ve never heard a word of complaint from her. And this person ---” he pointed at a redhead man, who just entered the shop. “He’s a firefighter; he’s saved countless lives. He never gives up, no matter how dangerous the situation seems to be.”
The old man looked Tommy in the eyes and smiled. “You don’t need a superpower to be a hero for someone else. The path of a superhero starts not in the mind, not in the muscles, but in the heart.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely.

He turned his head left and right, but the old man was nowhere to be seen. His eyes lit up---- he already had an idea of what he should do.
