Sharanya, 14, an eighth grader from Challenger School, built a solar-powered trash-collecting robot, which will play a vital role in taking care of the environment.
Volunteering in local city cleanups, Sharanya was always saddened to see tons of rubbish still out there after hours’ hard work. “People do have very limited time and resources, but robots don’t. They’ll collect double the amount and work for longer hours,” Sharanya says. “I learned from a science journal that solar panels moving to always face the sun collect more energy than stationary ones. So I determined to design a trash-collecting robot powered by a sun-tracking solar panel.”
However, Sharanya had no experience in robotics, so it was a completely new experience. She firmly believed there’s no instant way to success and that it’s just a process of trial and error. Throughout the project, she studied operating instructions repeatedly and had to use tons of power tools and cut pieces of metal to certain lengths. Her dad would come to her rescue whenever she accidentally burned a wire. “It’s difficult to follow the scientific method, but sticking to this and changing just one variable at a time gets you the best results,” Sharanya says.
Sharanya’s robot has trash and recycling bins and moves with motorized wheels. The device’s front and back have object-detecting sensors. One end of the robot. has a rubbish-collecting moveable arm with a pan to gather objects and drop them into the trash or recycling bins. This pan also contains a metal-detecting sensor to sort metal recyclables into the appropriate place. A solar panel sits at the robot's other end; extended into the air. Attached to it is a light-tracking device that follows the sun, enabling the solar panel to move accordingly.
In tests, the sun-tracking solar panel generated more power than a stationary one over six hours. And the robot correctly identified an object every time it was presented. It picked up items and accurately classified aluminum cans as recyclables 80 percent of the time. Sharanya is confident that the robot will soon sort plastic and glass by striking the items and detecting the difference in their frequencies.
24.What led Sharanya to intend a sun-tracking solar panel for, the robot?
A.Her survey findings. B.The knowledge she acquired.
C.Her social experiences. D.The extra courses she attended.
25.What does paragraph 3 focus on concerning Sharanya?
A.What contributed to her success. B.Why she didn’t fear failure.
C.Whether goals counted in her work. D.How she was financially supported.
26.What may be the function of the object-detecting sensors?
A.To identify colors. B.To locate metal materials.
C.To discover garbage. D.To analyze moving routes.
27.What does the author mainly want to say in the last paragraph?
A.The robot needs retesting. B.The robot reached no desired effect.
C.The robot enjoys wide popularity. D.The robot faces a promising prospect.

In the last hundred years, the Bali mynah (巴厘岛白椋鸟) has been sought after for its white feathers and blue skin.
The capture for sale along with the bird’s habitat loss led to its being listed as “threatened” in 1988. In 1994 the Bali mynah was moved to “critically endangered”. By 2001, experts estimated only about six Bali mynahs were living in the wild, with thousands in captivity (圈养) across the world.
Now, conservationists are hoping to increase the mynah population by working with bird breeders and sellers to release them into the wild. Actually, in the 1980s, an organization now called Bird Life International started to work with the government to launch a breeding program for the birds.
Breeders can seek government permits to breed the birds. If approved, breeders are given mynahs and can keep 90 percent of the baby birds for private sale. The remaining birds are released at the National Park, where they will be closely watched by park officials.
Early mynah releases faced problems. Some birds were infected with some diseases; others were killed by natural hunters. Illegal hunting also continued — the national park’s breeding center was even robbed, with nearly 40 birds stolen.
Yet conservation efforts in the last ten years have seen greater success. Tom Squires, a famous conservationist said: “Bird keepers can still keep birds and follow their hobby without causing real problems for wild populations — which is better than species going extinct in the world.”
Agus Ngurah, also a well-known conservationist, praised the program. “With the community being the breeders… they are helping us to take care of the birds existing in nature,” he said.
Squires noted that there is clear evidence that some released birds have produced young ones. “So that leads me to believe that the population is certainly self-sustaining to an extent,” he said. Meanwhile, 420 Bali mynahs are now found living in the National Park.
According to Logan William, another conservationist, “The government should give something back to the community so they can feel the benefits from conservation, and the bird can also benefit.”
28.Why is the mynah hunted by humans?
A.They are pests. B.They taste good.
C.They look beautiful. D.They are countless.
29.What can we infer from the three conservationists’ words?
A.The government contributes the least.
B.Bird keepers can keep the birds freely.
C.The efforts of protecting the mynah have paid off.
D.The community can breed birds for profits completely.
30.How many reasons may cause releasing problems?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
31.What might be the writer’s attitude to the breeding programme?
A.Approving. B.Critical. C.Doubtful. D.Opposed.

More than one-third of the world‘s food is wasted or thrown away, most of which ends up in landfills, producing very large amounts of planet-warming greenhouse gases. Now, many studies show that it is becoming harder to grow enough food to feed an increasing population due to climate change and soil degradation.
But one of the most promising and simplest solutions lies in the problem itself: this wasted food — if composted (制堆肥) — could slow climate change and improve soil quality. Higher-quality soil also continues to absorb more carbon from the atmosphere, helping to improve plants and contributing further to fighting climate change. Returning one ton of organic matter to each hectare of soil would increase the production of cereal crops each year in Africa, Asia and South America by millions of tons.
While it is true that people can compost in their yards, community gardens, or even on their kitchen counters, larger-scale efforts, including infrastructure (基础设施) and incentives (激励) for consumers, would take it to the next level. Imagine if consumers could just leave unwanted food in a roadside bin for pickup, or drop it off at a local store, earning a few cents a bucket, just like what has been offered for recycling bottles or newspapers.
Moreover, in the case of composting, the payment incentive system would be great because the end-product of compost can be sold to farmers, making it an economically workable model, something that is often lacking in recycling, especially for certain materials, like many types of plastics.
Eventually, more widespread composting of food would pave the way for solutions to additional waste challenges, such as the disposal of packaging and clothing. This will have other positive effects as well; if more consumers compost, companies will be more inspired to make and use compostable packaging, clothing, and other products. While more compostable items are starting to emerge today, additional composting will further drive demand and innovation, and offer a game-changing solution for the planet.
32.What can be concluded from paragraph 1?
A.The great impact of climate change on food.
B.The burden of population growth on the planet.
C.The uneven distribution of food around the world.
D.The urgency of properly dealing with wasted food.
33.What can be learned about the approach to composting wasted food?
A.It is only workable on a small scale.
B.It would take a long term to have an effect.
C.It may raise people’s awareness of reducing food waste.
D.It requires comprehensive efforts to achieve a better effect.
34.What does the author think of the payment incentive system of composting food?
A.It is highly profitable. B.It is easy to carry out.
C.It is a sustainable economic cycle pattern. D.It is more effective than other recycling systems.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How Wasted Food Could Be Reduced B.How Wasted Food Could Impact Humans
C.How Wasted Food Could Save the Planet D.How Wasted Food Could Become a Business

“Gary, here’s the weekend again. Shall we go to the newly completed basketball court to play basketball?” Jason asked his best friend excitedly. Instead of an enthusiastic reply, Gary looked away, stammering, “I can’t. I... I’ve joined a reading club.” His voice was so soft that Jason could barely catch his words. “To improve your reading? All right. We can go another time then,” Jason said reassuringly (安慰), confused as he was. As far as he knew, Gary had never declined any basketball-related activities. How come this was the case? Shaking his head skeptically, Jason got on his bike, heading for the destination alone.
For the next few days, Gary stayed away from Jason in case he asked more questions. Unwilling to leave his best friend concerned about him, Gary wasn’t ready to tell Jason the truth that he had not joined a reading club but taken on a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant. A few days before, his father had a severe car accident and underwent a major operation. His condition required frequent visits to the hospital, which would contribute to huge medical expenses. The sudden misfortune threw the family into helplessness. His mother had to look after his father. Feeling it his responsibility to support the family at the crucial period, he landed a part-time job, which he thought was the best solution to easing his family’s financial stress.
The moment the dismissal bell rang, Gary rushed out of the school gate to get ready for his shift at the fast-food restaurant. He didn’t want to be late. Latecomers would have their extra allowance deducted (扣除). Customers streaming into the restaurant, Gary quickly took his position behind the counter as a teenager started placing his order. Gary’s fingers moved rapidly to key in the items ordered. The teenager moved aside to wait for his order after making payment.
“Next order, please,” Gary said and looked up, only to find he was face to face with none other than Jason.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

“Gary? Is that you?” Jason asked, eyes wide in surprise. Gary’s heart skipped a beat as he nervously nodded, trying to keep his composure. “Yeah, it’s me,” he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. Jason’s expression shifted from shock to concern. “What are you doing here? I thought you joined a reading club,” he said, his tone laced with confusion. Finally, Gary took a deep breath and confessed, “Actually, I didn’t join a club. I got a part-time job here to help with my family’s medical expenses.”
Having finished his work, Gary came up and sat with Jason. Gary explained the situation with his father’s accident and the financial strain it had put on their family. “I didn’t want to worry you, so I didn’t tell you the truth,” he said, looking down at his hands. “Gary, you should have told me,” he said gently. “We’re friends, and I would have helped if I could.” Gary smiled gratefully, feeling a weight lifted off his shoulders. “Thanks, Jason. It means a lot to me,” he replied. As they sat there, sharing a quiet moment, Gary knew that he had a true friend by his side, one who would stand by him through thick and thin.

Now Lecomte is a tour guide. He rarely takes his guests, mostly foreigners, to the most popular attractions. Instead, he searches for unknown scenery. “I just open the map APP and see if there are any villages around the popular tourist spots.” Lecomte often rides a motorcycle to find hidden scenery. Besides, Lecomte enjoys camping and hiking with his Chinese and foreign friends. They sing and play the ukulele by streams and chat with the locals who pick tea. He shares the beautiful photos online like images of an old man sitting by the river and reading a book against the sunset, or children running around and waving colorful fish lanterns. One of his favorites is a little girl holding a cartoon umbrella and building a snowman in the heavy snow. “Golly, the girl was me when I was little,” a young Chinese medicine commented. Lecomte still has a photo of his childhood home, a house with a red roof, surrounded by forests. “When I was a child, I loved camping in forests with my friends. I could see the stars.
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.C 27.D
由文章第二段“I learned from a science journal that solar panels moving to always face the sun collect more energy than stationary ones. So I determined to design a trash-collecting robot powered by a sun-tracking solar panel. (我从一本科学杂志上了解到,移动到始终面向太阳的太阳能电池板比固定的太阳能电池会收集更多的能量。因此,我决定设计一个由太阳能电池板驱动的垃圾收集机器人。)”可知,Sharanya在一本科学杂志上了解的知识使她打算为机器人设计一个阳光追踪太阳能电池板。故选B项。
25.主旨大意题。由文章第三段“However, Sharanya had no experience in robotics, so it was a completely new experience. ‘It’s difficult to follow the scientific method, but sticking to this and changing just one variable at a time gets you the best results,’ Sharanya says. 故选A项。
由文章第四段“This pan also contains a metal-detecting sensor to sort metal recyclables into the appropriate place. (这个盘状器还包含一个金属检测传感器,用于将金属可回收物分类到合适的位置。)”以及“One end of the robot has a rubbish-collecting moveable arm with a pan to gather objects and drop them into the trash or recycling bins. (机器人的一端有一个垃圾收集可移动臂,臂上有一个盘状器,用来收集物体并将其放入垃圾箱或回收箱。)”可知,metal-detecting sensor 是用来发现收集金属,而object-detecting sensors应该是用来发现收集垃圾这样的物件。故选C项。
27.推理判断题。由文章最后一段“In tests, the sun-tracking solar panel generated more power than a stationary one over six hours. And the robot correctly identified an object every time it was presented. It picked up items and accurately classified aluminum cans as recyclables 80 percent of the time. Sharanya is confident that the robot will soon sort plastic and glass by striking the items and detecting the difference in their frequencies. (在测试中,太阳追踪太阳能电池板在六个小时内产生的电力比静止的太阳能电池板多。每次出现物体时,机器人都能正确地识别出物体。它在80%的时间里收集物品并准确地将铝罐归类为可回收物。Sharanya相信,机器人很快就会通过敲击物品并检测它们的频率差异来对塑料和玻璃进行分类。)”可知,作者最后一段想说明该机器人前景广阔。故选D项。
C
B.Critical. C.Doubtful. D.Opposed.
【答案】28.C 29.C 30.B 31.A
根据第一段“In the last hundred years, the Bali mynah (巴厘岛白椋鸟) has been sought after for its white feathers and blue skin.(在过去的一百年里,巴厘岛白椋鸟因其白色羽毛和蓝色皮肤而备受追寻)”可知,由于白色羽毛和蓝色皮肤,巴厘岛白椋鸟看起来很漂亮,这导致其被人类捕捉。故选C。
根据第六段“Tom Squires, a famous conservationist said: “Bird keepers can still keep birds and follow their hobby without causing real problems for wild populations — which is better than species going extinct in the world.”(著名的自然资源保护主义者汤姆·斯奎尔斯说:“鸟类饲养员仍然可以饲养鸟类并追随他们的爱好,而不会给野生种群带来真正的问题——这比世界上灭绝的物种要好。”)”、第七段““With the community being the breeders… they are helping us to take care of the birds existing in nature,” he said.(他说:“社区是育种者……他们正在帮助我们照顾自然界中存在的鸟类。”)”以及最后一段“According to Logan William, another conservationist, “The government should give something back to the community so they can feel the benefits from conservation, and the bird can also benefit.”(另一位环保主义者洛根·威廉表示:“政府应该回馈社区,这样他们才能感受到保护的好处,鸟类也能从中受益。”)”
Some birds were infected with some diseases; others were killed by natural hunters. Illegal hunting also continued—the national park’s breeding center was even robbed, with nearly 40 birds stolen.(早期的白椋鸟释放面临问题。一些鸟感染了一些疾病;其他的被自然猎人杀害。非法狩猎也在继续——国家公园的繁殖中心甚至遭到抢劫,近40只鸟被盗)”可知,释放巴厘岛白椋鸟可能面临鸟类感染疾病、被自然猎人杀害和非法狩猎三个问题。故选B。
31.推理判断题。根据第六段“Tom Squires, a famous conservationist said: “Bird keepers can still keep birds and follow their hobby without causing real problems for wild populations — which is better than species going extinct in the world.”(著名的自然资源保护主义者汤姆·斯奎尔斯说:“鸟类饲养员仍然可以饲养鸟类并追随他们的爱好,而不会给野生种群带来真正的问题——这比世界上灭绝的物种要好。”)”、第七段““With the community being the breeders… they are helping us to take care of the birds existing in nature,” he said.(他说:“社区是育种者……他们正在帮助我们照顾自然界中存在的鸟类。”)”、第八段“Meanwhile, 420 Bali mynahs are now found living in the National Park.(与此同时,目前有420只巴厘岛白椋鸟生活在国家公园)”以及最后一段“According to Logan William, another conservationist, “The government should give something back to the community so they can feel the benefits from conservation, and the bird can also benefit.”(另一位环保主义者洛根·威廉表示:“政府应该回馈社区,这样他们才能感受到保护的好处,鸟类也能从中受益。”)” 故选A。
D
