I was the kind of girl who always left my things out of order all round the room, while my roommate Jane was extremely organized. Each of her things was usually in the right place, but mine always somewhere or difficult to be found. She even labeled (做标记) everything. By contrast, I always looked for everything or even depended on her to help me.
Over time, Jane got neater and I got untidier. Most of the time, she would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other. War broke out one evening. Jane came into the room, looking extremely tired. Soon, I heard her shouting, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Before I knew it, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute if it were not because of a phone call from her mother. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away that her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up the phone, she quickly crawled (爬) onto her bed, crying. It was obvious that it was something she should not go through alone but at that time she had no one to share her sadness. All of a sudden, a strong feeling of pity rose up in my heart.

Last Sunday, Emily and her brother, John, went to a restaurant to have dinner. There were lots of people in the restaurant so they had to share their table with another person, who was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she left in a hurry and left her phone on the table.
When Emily and John prepared to go home, Emily noticed the phone. She quickly told John. “It must be the young lady’s phone.” Join looked at the phone which took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. John had always wanted a phone, but his parents didn’t agree.
John stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, “I want to take the phone.” Emily could not believe her ears. She shouted at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?” However, John grabbed the phone and ran out of the restaurant quickly.
Upon arriving home, John locked his bedroom door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. He liked it very much and polished it happily.
Before sleep, Emily went into John’s bedroom and said. “John, you can’t keep the phone. Your behavior is wrong. And how will you explain the thing to our parents?” John said. “I will say a friend lent it to me.” “You are lying. Oh, dear! When did you turn so dishonest?” said Emily.
Then Emily saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the phone. “Why don’t we just call this number? The owner must be worried. We can talk to her and ask her to come and take back her phone.” Emily was trying to persuade her brother to change his mind.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (盯着他们).
One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon.Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more tired he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her.Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third.Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

A Father’s Day Surprise
“Mano, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Ali asked his sister.
“Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 19 this year. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it.” Mano replied.
“Do you have any idea how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Ali asked.
“Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas.” Mano answered excitedly. “What are you kids talking about?” their mum asked, entering their room.
“Mum, we were wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day.” Mano said.
“Oh, I am surprised you kids remembered! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully.”Mum said.
“That would be great!”said Mano and Ali together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mum went to the kitchen, and Mano and Ali started doing their homework. But soon Ali noticed Mano deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Ali, I was thinking that our parents do everything for us and in return they want nothing. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?” Mano replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades.” Ali nodded.
The next day, all three of them, Mano, Ali and their mum, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. Mano drew a family picture with her crayons, Ali bought balloons and candles and began writing a poem which he planned to sing that day. In short, a lot of things were being planned and prepared.

She was the most hardworking girl at her school. Her marks were higher than the others. She was the best, but nobody wanted to be her friend. Her classmates didn’t want to play with her and some even laughed at her. Cary’s teacher Jared didn’t know that.
One day, Jared set an exam and Robert, a boy who was the king of all the students, signed his exam paper using Cary’s name, and changed Cary’s name for Robert’s quickly after Cary handed in her paper. It wasn’t noticed by anybody. When Jared returned all the exam Papers, everybody was shocked. Cary failed the exam, but the others seemed to be happy with that.

During their fun time, Jared suddenly appeared to inform Cary that there had been a mistake, and she hadn’t failed.

My great-grandmother Eileen is ambitious (有雄心的), determined, loyal, strong and a bit of legend (传奇) in her own lifetime, which now reaches 92 years. I should add that we’re not allowed to call her Gran, because she says it makes her feel old.
That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day. I paid a visit to her. On my arrival, seeing my low spirits, she asked me whether I had prepared to get a new start. I just kept silent. Without any more words, she picked up a box which she placed on the coffee table, saying “You do know what you’re doing with these things, don’t you?”
It was a new phone. Her current mobile was pretty ancient.
“Yes.” I said.
“Good. That’s why I ask you. You young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it home and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, show me how to use my new phone, such as getting on the Internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly. Setting up the phone would be easy, but teaching her how to use it might be challenging.
The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone. “Here’s your phone. It’s all ready to use.”
For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode (密码) and fingerprint recognition, which she said was like something out of James Bond.
When I finally got her to swipe (滑动屏幕), she didn’t put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone across the room and it landed on the sofa. “Take it easy!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to go home when she was angry.

My brother Joe and I no longer live in the same state, but I make sure to give Joe a call every Christmas. In fact, I will never forget a Christmas when I was seven and Joe was five. I’ve kept a secret about that Christmas for 20 years. Now hearing Joe’s voice makes me feel guilty (内疚的) about it all over again. I think he probably doesn’t even remember it.
When we were kids, Joe almost drove me “crazy”! If Mom brought home my favorite yogurt, Joe would make sure to eat it before I got a chance. When our parents gave us each our own basketball, Joe insisted on playing with mine instead of his own.
That Christmas when I was seven, I was determined to teach him a lesson. At that time I was old enough that I no longer believed in Santa, but I knew Joe did. I couldn’t stand him thinking Santa had put him on the “nice” list when I knew he’d been naughty (淘气的) all year.
One day before Christmas, I put on my winter jacket and headed over to our neighbor’s backyard. It was filled with rocks. To me they really looked like coal (煤炭). I was sure that they’d look like coal to Joe too. I filled a lot of the rocks into the pockets of my winter jacket, brought them up to my room and hid them under my bed. Then I waited.
That morning, I got up early, went downstairs secretly and put the rocks into the red stocking with Joe’s name on it. I watched Joe take down his heavy stocking, lay it on the living room floor.

Finally, the bell rang. “Don’t forget to practice your class presentation at home!” Miss Bella cried as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jessy felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jessy was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain so rt of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jessy bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water...”Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain so rt of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

When I was about four years old, I started washing my face on my own. However, I always ignored the area behind my ears on purpose though my mom would often remind me.
One summer, in July of that year, my mom drove me to my grandparents’ house for our annual summer holiday visit. When we arrived, I was told that Grandma had gone on a trip with her friends and wouldn’t be back for another two weeks. Feeling a bit down, I went to the yard to play while my mom and grandpa caught up on some things. Although I couldn’t hear their conversation clearly, I had a strong feeling they were talking about me based on their gestures and expressions. Later, my mom returned home, and she would come back to pick me up two months later.
After dinner that night, Grandpa asked me to take a bath before going to bed. Since I loved taking baths, I happily agreed. With the bathtub (浴缸) filled with water, Grandpa reminded me, “Just make sure you clean the area behind your ears really well. You wouldn’t want potatoes to start growing there, would you?”
“Potatoes?” I stopped in my tracks and turned back to look at him. “Yes, potatoes. If you don’t clean the dirt behind your ears, potatoes might actually sprout (发芽) and grow there,” he explained, causing my eyes to widen in surprise. “But I don’t have any potatoes behind my ears, Grandpa,” I said as I ran my fingers along the back of my ears. He took a quick glance and replied, “Oh, I see a couple of sprouts: starting right there!” He urged me to get into the bathtub immediately and scrub (擦洗) them away thoroughly.
I nodded, still in disbelief. This was the first time I had ever heard such a thing. Why hadn’t my parents warned me about this before? I wondered, but couldn’t find an answer. Nonetheless, I felt shocked by Grandpa’s warning.

Once upon a time, there lived a poor but cheerful shoemaker. He was so happy that he sang all day long. The children loved to stand around his window to listen to him.
Next door to the shoemaker lived a rich man. He used to sit up all night to count his gold. In the morning, he went to bed, but he could not sleep because of the sound of the shoemaker’s singing. One day, he thought of a way to stop the singing. He wrote a letter to the shoemaker inviting him over for a cup of tea.
The shoemaker came at once, and to his great surprise, the rich man gave him a bag of gold as a gift. The shoemaker took the bag and thanked the rich man. When he returned home, the shoemaker couldn’t wait to open the bag. He had never seen so much gold in his life! He sat down at his bench and began, carefully, to count it. The children watched through the window.
There was so much there that the shoemaker was afraid to let it out of his sight. So he took it to bed with him. But he could not sleep for worrying about it. So he got out of bed and went to hide it in the attic (阁楼), but he was not sure if that was a good place.
Very early in the morning, he got up and brought his gold down from the attic. He had decided to hide it up the chimney (烟囱) instead. But after breakfast, he thought it would be safer in the chicken house. So he hid it there. But he was still uneasy, and in a little while he dug a hole in the garden and buried his bag of gold in it.

A few years ago when I was looking for a small dog to add to our family, I contacted the local SPCA(Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and got the name of a woman who was fostering(领养,代养) some rescued Maltese dogs for them. I called the woman, and my husband and I drove to her home. As I looked around, I noticed a cute Maltese named Casper. My husband and I decided we would like to adopt him.
The foster mom asked us if there were any way we would open our hearts to Casper’s friend, Kato, as well. She told us that the two boys, who had only each other for comfort, had recently been rescued from a puppy farm, where they had spent the first seven years of their lives. When the local SPCA shut down the puppy farm and seized all the dogs, Kato and Casper had been put in her foster home.
She told us that when she first picked them up, their fur was in such terrible shape that they hardly looked like Maltese dogs. They were brown, whose fur was wet and dirty, and their paws were swollen. For seven years, they were locked in a dark doghouse and the only human contact these boys had was when they were thrown their food.
Hearing all this, I turned and looked down at the little Maltese named Kato. But he’s so ugly, I thought. And he isn’t even friendly. He barked angrily when we looked at him. When I reached for him, he pushed himself against the back wall of his doghouse, whispering. Still, I felt a tig at my heart and agreed to take Kato also. As we drove home, my husband and I worried that maybe we’d taken on too much. We’d never had dogs that had been so abused(虐待) for such a longtime.

My son Joey was born with disabled feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally — but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery, casts and braces. By the time he was eight, you wouldn’t know he had a problem when you saw him walk.
The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. Although I was a little worried about his state, we never told him that he probably wouldn’t be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn’t know it. Every day after school, he would run and jump crazily, laughing cheerfully with his friends. Before bed, he was delighted to share everything that he enjoyed with me, and the brightness on his face drove away all my anxiety.
In his seventh grade, the school planned to hold a cross-country race. On hearing the news, he jumped with joy, and he decided to go out for the cross-country team. What worried me most was the extreme strength and patience that was required for the race. However, his strong determination eventually changed my attitude towards the event. I made up mind to be in favor of him. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others — perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to so many others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn’t tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn’t know.

At first, Michael didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house when they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to check. That’s when he saw two women and a girl helpless and heartbroken on their doorway.
“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Michael, then 64, immediately ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara, the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Michael’s three youngest kids.
The thick smoke caused Michael to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe.
After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately.
“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.
Michael knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. However, taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar design to his, he made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.
“Baby girl, where are you?”
His throat and lungs burned as if he’d inhaled fire instead of the smoke in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan emerged. Still unable to see, Michael fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An unlucky thought crossed his mind: I’m probably gonna die up here.

Claudia decided to run away from home. But she didn’t want to run away in the heat of anger with a bag on her back. She didn’t like discomfort. Therefore, she decided that her leaving home would be running to somewhere nice. To a large place, a comfortable place, an indoor place, and a beautiful place. And that’s why she decided upon the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
She planned very carefully; she saved her pocket money and she chose her partner. She chose Jamie, the second youngest of her three younger brothers. He could be counted on, and now and then he was good for a laugh. Besides, he was rich; unlike most boys of his age, he had never even begun collecting baseball cards. He saved almost every penny he got.
On Monday afternoon, Claudia told Jamie at the school bus that she wanted him to sit with her because she had something important to tell him.
“I’ve decided to run away from home, and I’ve chosen you to accompany (陪伴) me,” Claudia said.
“Why pick on me? Why not pick on Steve?” Jamie asked.
Claudia said, “I don’t want Steve. Steve is one of the things in my life that I’m running away from. I want you.”
It moved Jamie and he felt flattered (荣幸的). He stopped thinking, “Why pick on me?” and started thinking, “I am chosen.” He sat up in his seat, put one foot up on the seat, put his hands over his knee and said, “OK, Claudia, when do we get out of here? And how?”

During my school years, I had only close friend. We spent years together, and we were inseparable, in or out of school. But the Greg moved away, and I never thought it would take more than 40 years to bring us together again.
As children, Greg and I dove into everything with passion. At that time, we were pure (纯真的) and kind, full of curiosity and expectation for life. We raced our bikes and illustrated (给书加插图) our own comic books. We even became attracted to the same girl from around the corner, a sixth -grader named Joanne who barely (几乎不) knew we existed.
The last times a Greg was sometime in 1966. It was so short a meeting that I couldn’t recall saying goodbye before he moved. Since then, we lost touch.
But then, a few summers ago, I saw a familiar woman. “Excuse me. Would your name happen to be Joanne?”
“Uh, yes...” She didn’t recognise me until I explained who I was. We hadn’t exchanged more than a few dozen words in our entire lifetime. “Have you stayed in touch with Greg?” she asked. I was surprised she even knew of our friendship.
“No. I haven’t,” I admitted. “I wish I had.”
Back at the office I checked my messages. I received one email, and then read it from start to finish. The email was from Greg.
Greg had tracked me down through social media. He was now married, had two children and had become a musician and entrepreneur (企业家) . We exchanged several emails before connecting by phone. A month later, my wife and I drove to meet Greg and his family in person.

I first started playing soccer on a Wednesday three years ago. My cousin played soccer every Wednesday at the park and he dragged me into playing with him that day. My cousin played soccer really well, which made me want to learn how to play soccer so that I could fit in with him.
Growing up without my father, I wasn’t so interested in sports. But that day as soon as I started playing soccer, I realized I had a new interest. So for almost a year I was playing soccer at the park every Wednesday with adults. However, I didn’t make much progress. I started thinking, “If I keep playing with adults, I might not get better because I could never get the ball.”
However, one day when I felt depressed for what had happened to me, I came across a special soccer payer, a lame man(跛脚的人)who was about 45 years old. Unexpectedly, his disability didn’t affect his skills, desire and courage to play although many people frequently laughed at him. No matter when it was windy or rainy, he always played soccer alone on the court next to our building, without a smile on his face forever. Maybe he and I couldn’t be accepted by a team.
Having no choice but to practice more, I played soccer on his court for ten days. And we almost had no communication. Day after day, my skills were still bad, so I was absent for playing for a long time. Then, I returned to the court without any aim and thought. Amazingly, it was he who asked me actively why I had been absent. We talked a lot. And I realized that a large number of factors affected my playing, such as skills, mood, teamwork, will and courage, etc. At the moment, I knew I was sick in mind and my unfitness seriously impeded(阻碍) the development of my sports.
Pragraph1:
To be honest, sometimes I had an idea to give up soccer, but I couldn’t when I met the special person.

That night, I quarreled with my mother, then stormed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket, I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.
At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!
The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey little girl, you want to eat a bowl?”
“But … but I do not carry money …” I shyly replied.
“Okay, I’ll treat you.” the seller said, “come in, I will cook you a bowl.”
A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.
“What is it?” He asked.
“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is cruel (残忍的)!!”
The seller sighed, “Girl, why did you think so? Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were little, why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom?”
I was really surprised after hearing that.
Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little.

When I was young, we lived in a small town. Everyone knew Roy as he was a top student in the town. He was of my age, but he lost his parents in an accident at the age of 8. So he lived alone and delivered newspapers to support himself and his education.
Every time he delivered newspapers to our home, he wore a broad smile on his face and greeted my mom gently. My mom was greatly surprised when she knew his daily routine. He got up every morning by 5 o’clock and walked 5 kilometers from where he lived to the newspaper office to collect the newspapers. By 6:00, he carried 50 pieces of newspapers — more than 5 kilograms and walked 3 kilometers back. After sending the newspapers, he rushed another 3 kilometers home to cook a simple breakfast before hurrying to school.
This morning, seeing he left hurriedly in a strong wind, my mom and I decided to do something for him. After school, I waited for him at the school gate and told him that my mom would like to invite him to our home. When he asked why, I replied, “You will know soon!” Thinking for a short while, he followed me to my home nearby. It was possible that he assumed my mom would continue to subscribe to the newspaper.

On a bright Saturday, my peaceful lunchtime was suddenly interrupted when my dad surprised me with an unplanned idea. I couldn’t hide my annoyance as what was supposed to be a relaxing Saturday turned into a day focused on football — a sport I wasn’t very excited about.
Many of my friends loved sports, while I preferred to find comfort in the pages of a good book rather than run around on a football court. My lack of interest resulted in average performance on the team, and I often felt like I was a problem for both my coach and teammates.
Things changed last week when our coach announced a coming match against the champions scheduled for a month later. The realization that this important game would have a big audience only made me more anxious. The fear of possibly letting down the team weighed on me.
Determined to make a positive impact, I decided to practice hard every day. My motivation came from wanting to help the team and to overcome the self-doubt affecting my performance.
As the match day approached, my teammates seemed unsure about including me in the lineup (阵容). I wouldn’t have minded sitting out, but the situations were different. With one player short, they reluctantly (不情愿地) included me, and The Thunder Strikers, our team, stepped onto the field to enjoy cheers from the crowd.
The pressure was intense. The game started, and within the ten minutes, I received a warning. Before long, the referee showed me a second yellow card, forcing me to leave the field. When I got back into the game, the score was tied, and the next goal would decide the winner.
As the ball came toward me, I felt a bit scared. My teammates seemed tired, and the other team really wanted to win. With great courage, I kicked the ball. The opponents (对手), maybe not expecting much from me because of my earlier struggles, were surprised when the ball went past the goalkeeper.

Most boys coming to our ranch (大牧场) were living around animals for the first time. Sent by educational systems, they were boys in trouble; they had no family, lacked love, often broke the rules, and were lonely. Our ranch created a “boy-horse communication program” for them, hoping to heal their broken spirits and help them behave well through their communication with horses. I was the program’s head.
15-year-old Martin was a new arrival. He appeared cold and easily angry and had no experience with horses. He seemed to consider a horse only a vehicle for speed and thrills. He always pushed his way to the front of the line every day, knocking down smaller children to get on the horse. And then he started moving fast. We tried to communicate with him, but he only cared about his excitement.
One morning, when I was upset about Martin’s behavior in my office, one worker told me that a female horse was ill. Then, I ran to its stable (马厩), and within an hour she was dead. We felt sad about her and also concerned about the young baby she had recently delivered (分娩). The baby horse’s first need was to be fed.
We prepared some milk in a bottle and offered it to her. But she wouldn’t accept the bottle. We had to put our hands in the milk and let her suck (吮吸) the milk off our fingers. It was a painfully slow method of feeding, but we had no choice if we wanted the baby horse to survive.
At that moment, Martin finished his daily riding and found us. Pushing his way through the crowd of kids who were watching us feed the baby horse, he got to the front, shouting, “I want to feed it!”
After I showed Martin how to do it, he put his hand in the milk and then put his fingers towards the horse’s mouth. When the baby horse closed her mouth around his fingers, Martin was surprised and drew back, shouting, “Hey, it bit me!” But knowing the little horse wanted more food, he immediately re-wet his hand.
And he gently put his fingers near her mouth.

When my daughter. Rachel was 6 years old, we went to the local shelter, looking for a perfect cat. We liked all the cats we saw there, but we especially loved one that was black with a small white tip to her tail, like a bright star in the night sky. We brought her home and called her Starry.
Starry was lovely. At night when we watched TV, she would come into Rachel’s lap and comfortably stay there. Starry always got her face close to Rachel’s, ending her love with a gentle touch on Rachel’s nose. Sometimes I felt so jealous (忌妒的) of their love. Although I was the one who tank care of the cat, feeding and cleaning it, Starry was clearly Rachel’s cat. Finally, I came to love watching their close relationship
My little girl grew up and went to senior high school. Starry and Rachel were still close, though Rachel spent less and less time at home. starry spent most of her day sitting on the sideboard in the dining room, looking out of the window into the backyard. I loved seeing her as I passed by her, for her shiny black coat almost sparkled (闪烁) in the sunlight and the white tip of her tail looked bright against the shining black of her body.
One Sunday morning, early in November, Starry got out of, the room before we could stop her. When Rachel came home from school, she went into the room with a worried expression. “Where’s Starry?” she asked. When we told her we didn’t know, she led us outside with her. All I did was show my little sister how to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with dirt. Water it. Wait. “See, Laynie,” I explained, “a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we have to do is water it.”
Laynie had her own watering can so she could “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she said, “We forgot something, Brad.” She ran to the fence and started sprinkling water on another spot. I walked over and saw a fresh patch of dirt near the fence.
“Did you plant something there?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil.”
She stopped sprinkling. “My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it, the way you said."
“But, Laynie—”
“How long does it take to grow a new pencil?”
I should have explained things right then, but I just muttered, “Uh... I never grew one before.”
Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie’s pencil and “planted” a brand-new purple pencil. I fixed it with the erase r sticking up.
Laynie was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shouted. She drew pictures with it all afternoon.
A few days later, Laynie was watering the same spot. “How long does it take to grow crayons?” she asked. “I can’t wait!” she squealed, giggling... She squatted down and whispered, “Grow. Come on, grow.”
Two days later, new crayons sprouted their point y little heads, thanks to me. Laynie jumped up and down and yelled, “They look like flowers!” She “picked” them and ran into the house. Grandma thought Laynie was cute when she claimed that she had grown these things. I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Laynie’s “seeds.” And it was cool to see her get excited.
One day I saw her patting down some dirt, so I knew she’d just planted something. “What is it this time?” I asked.
“It’s Molly.” I gasped. Molly was Laynie’s goldfish! “She jumped out of her bowl again,” Laynie said. “Grandma said we didn’t find her in time.” Then Laynie picked up her little watering can and started sprinkling that spot. My heart dropped to my feet when she asked, “How long does it take to grow a goldfish, Brad?” She knelt down to whisper “Grow, Molly. Grow!” before she skipped back to the house.

David and George were best friends at school. They sat together in the same school classroom, shared sandwiches during lunch breaks, and had countless adventures together,
As George’s birthday approached, David noticed something that concerned him. It was George’s shoes, the soles (鞋底) of which were nearly worn through. They were no longer as comfortable as they should be, and David could tell that George needed a new pair of shoes and he decided to do something special for his friend on his birthday.
David’s thoughtful plan started with a conversation with his mum. He explained how much he cared for his friend George and how he wanted to gift him a pair of shoes for his birthday.
His mum, a kind and wise woman, agreed that it was a wonderful idea. She also wanted to teach David an important lesson about earning and giving. So, they discussed a plan together. “David,” his mum said, “I think it’s a lovely idea to buy shoes for George. But how about this? I can give you some money for doing extra housework around the house. You can earn the money you need to buy the shoes. What do you think? “David’s eyes lit up, and he smiled widely. “That’s a great idea, Mum! I want to do it. ”
David became a whirlwind (旋风) of activity around the house. He swept the floor, watered the plants, washed the clothes, and even helped his mum with the dishes. His determination to earn enough money for George’s gift shone through his every action.
As days turned into weeks, David saved penny by penny. His mum was impressed by his hard work. She knew that her son’s surprise for George would not only make his friend happy but would also teach David the joy of giving.

A little bird landed on the tree branch outside Lisa’s bedroom window. It sang energetically as the first pale yellow rays of sunshine appeared.
“Oh, my god, what is that noise?” Lisa complained to herself, pulling her bed sheets over her head to ignore the sound. It was no use, and she knew it. The loud sound showed the coming of the day. Lisa’s mom knocked twice on her door, and then came in with a smile. “Time to get up, Sleepyhead,” She whispered. “The early bird catches the worm, you know.”
“Ugh,” mumbled (含含糊糊地说) Lisa into her pillow. “What does that even mean?”
“It’s just an expression, Honey”, her mom replied. She gave Lisa a kiss on the cheek and urged her to get out of bed. Lisa rolled over and slept for a few more minutes.
With her mom’s repeated urging, Lisa had no choice but to get herself dressed. She went unwillingly downstairs for breakfast, ate slowly, and missed her bus. When she finally got to school, she failed to get a place in the Chess Club. She also missed the first part of math class, so she didn’t understand the lesson and had to get extra help at lunchtime. Her teacher gave her extra homework to make sure she knew it. As a result, she missed her favourite library time. This day was no fun.
The next morning, Lisa was woken up by the same loud noisy song. Instead of ignoring it, today Lisa walked over to the window and opened the curtains. “Well, hello there, little fellow,” she said when she saw the pretty bird outside, still singing happily. As she watched, the bird stuck its beak (喙) into the wet ground, and pulled out a wiggling (不停摇摆) worm for breakfast.
“Today I am going to be the early bird,” thought Lisa.

Then Dad came in.

I held her finger gently and her face lit up when the menu appeared. “I can’t wait to show everyone my new phone,” she said happily. “Thank you for your patience, Tom.” I was not feeling so hopeless any more now. Great-grandma’s spirit inspired me greatly. It occurred to me that if a 92-year-old lady could learn new skills, then so could I. There must be a job out there for me somewhere and I was sure to find it. My great-grandmother would always be a role model for me to learn from.

【答案】 Looking at the gift inside, Joe’s smile disappeared suddenly. His face turned red. He didn’t cry or complain. He stayed completely silent. He wouldn’t even look at anyone else in the room. As I watched, my own expectation turned to something like regret. Joe put his whole stocking aside, hiding it so our parents wouldn’t see how “Santa” had treated him. I’d never told anyone what I’d done. But it still troubled me, even all these years later. I must tell him the truth when I called him this Christmas.
I said on the phone, “Hey, Joe, do you remember that Christmas morning when you were five … your stocking…” Joe said, “Coal! Of course I remember! Wow, you really frightened me that time.” To my relief, my brother burst out laughing. “I was embarrassed!” he added. “I waited until everyone had left the room. Then I took the rocks outside. I didn’t want Mom and Dad to know I was naughty!” “I guess if either of us should get coal in a Christmas stocking that year it must be me,” I said. It felt so good to say it, even if Joe never mentioned it. It turned out Joe’s forgiveness — even all these years later — was the best stocking present I could have wished for.

However, on second thoughts of the well-prepared speech and the magic of the watch, she changed her mind. “Miss Bella, could I give the speech first and then explain?” She made a request in a tone of begging.
Miss Bella smiled and asked the class to listen to Jessy’s speech first. Jessy put away her fright, took a deep breath, and made for the platform. Casting a glance at the sea of faces watching her, Jessy cleared her throat and began her speech. “I’m going to talk about swimming...” Word began to flood out of her. “What a terrific speech.” Whispers went around the classroom, and even Miss Bella nodded with approval. Immediately Jessy finished her speech, a storm of applause erupted from the class. Relieved, Jessy told everyone the truth, and especially the magic of the watch. She returned the watch to Lee as she eventually realized the real source of confidence.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I hurried to jump into the bathtub, carefully scrubbing behind my ears. I spent a considerable amount of time ensuring every bit of dirt was gone. When I finally finished bathing, I grabbed a handheld mirror and carefully checked each ear for any signs of potato sprouts. Grandpa noticed my actions and checked my ears with a smile, saying, “Ah, the potato sprouts are all gone.” I felt relieved. From that day forward, I developed a habit of cleaning the area behind my ears and even using mirrors to check. Eventually, Grandma returned home. That evening, as I examined my ears once again, she noticed.
“What are you looking at behind your ears?” Grandma asked me curiously. “I’m checking for ‘potato sprouts’,” I replied. She stared at me, puzzled. After I explained, she chuckled and said, “Oh, your grandpa was just teasing you.” “What?” I exclaimed. It was then that I realized I had been completely fooled and then burst into laughter with Grandma. Despite the childish trick, I continued to clean the area behind my ears regularly because it had already become a habit. Grandpa continued with his other “ear stories” for years to come. I was deeply touched by his sense of humor and wisdom.

【答案】范文
He was in no mood for singing and found it difficult to focus on his work. He was too worried about the safety of his gold. When he was working, he couldn’t help running in and out again and again to see if his gold was all right. And he kept removing the bag from one place to another to keep it safe. What’s worse, he lay awake all night because he was always trying to count the gold. Worst of all, the children no longer came to see him.
At last the shoemaker felt so unhappy that he took his bag of gold and ran next door to the rich man. He handed the bag of gold to the rich man the moment he opened the door. “Please take back your gold,” he said. “The worry of it is making me upset all day and night, and I have lost all of my friends. I would rather be a poor shoemaker as I was before.” The rich man was amazed. Before he could say a word, the shoemaker had left. From then on, the shoemaker was happy again and sang all day long at his work.

【答案】The first day at our home was very difficult for the two dogs. Because of such a long period of imprisonment, these two dogs are particularly resistant to humans. Whenever we tried to get close, they always showed their teeth and let out a deep and fierce. We put the dog’s favorite bone in front of them and tried to gently touch their ears. My husband’s hand almost got bitten by them. So they can only be temporarily confined in a cage.
Though difficult, I did everything I could think of to help these dogs. After a few days of getting along, they seemed to be accepting us. The paws were slowly swelling down. In the spacious and clean swimming pool, they became clean and tidy. We prepared two soft and warm dog houses and decided not to keep them in the cage anymore. Looking back at their fearful eyes and swollen claws, their dirty fur told us what kind of abuse they had experienced, which always made me sad. When I held them in my arms, tears couldn’t stop falling. Don’t worry, boys. Every day in the future, the sunshine will embrace you.

【答案】One possible version:
One day, he got a fever, and I advised him to have a rest. However, he insisted on going to school as usual. Worried and concerned, I went to look for him after school. On the playground, I found him running all alone, his face pale. On seeing the scene, my tears welled up, and I asked him how he felt. “Okay,” he said breathlessly. “The race is approaching, and I must get well prepared for it!” Beads of sweat streamed down his neck and his face was red, yet he looked straight ahead and kept running.
Two weeks later, the big day came. The names of the team runners were announced, and Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in seventh grade — the other six team members were all eighth-graders. When the race began, I cheered him on excitedly and he ran just like an arrow from the bowstring. Before I knew it, he was well ahead of others. It was obvious that he would be the champion. Seeing the bright smile on his face at the end of the track, I knew a lesson that there shouldn’t be any limitation to a heart to succeed.

【答案】
Finally, Michael touched something. A shoe, then an ankle — It was Tiara! He scooped her into his arms and stood. Turning, he fought through the smoke and made his way to the outside. Michael put Tiara down on the doorway. And He started CPR — the first time he’d ever done so. The women stood behind him, praying silently. Soon a slight cough came from Tiara’s throat. He gave five more breaths. She opened her eyes and took a breath on her own.
Tiara was safe now; however, Michael fainted down to the ground, unconscious. After spending a couple of days in the hospital, Michael finally woke up. He suffered severe burns to his windpipe and the upper portion of his lungs. He spent over a week in the hospital. The fire worsened Michael’s pulmonary condition, and he feels the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. “It’s a small price to pay, he says. “I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I wouldn’t give it a second thought.”

And how?”
Claudia said, “On Wednesday. Here’s the plan. Listen carefully.”

By the way, how much money do you have?” Jamie put his foot down on the floor, looked out of the window and said. “Why do you want to know?” Claudia explained patiently, “Jamie, if we are in this together, then we are together. I’ve got to know. How much money do you have?” “Twenty-four dollars and forty-three cents,” Jamie said proudly. Claudia laughed and said, “That’s great!”

【答案】One possible version:
Standing in front of his house, I began to get nervous. I didn’t know what to say or do. So much time had passed and a lot of memories seemed to have been blurred. But after hugs and introductions, the years dissolved as we exchanged stories about our lives. I had brought along the only picture I could find containing the two of us from my sixth birthday. The picture is a witness to our friendship in the past.
Seeing the photo, Greg handed me a small, old card. It was written “Greg’s invitation to my sixth birthday party”, signed “From Donnie” in faded blue crayon. Although the card had turned yellow, it could be seen that he kept it carefully for many years. There were a few other things shared that evening, but none as meaningful as the invitation and the picture. They were stored apart but saved for the reunion of two old friends. True friendship does not fade with time.

【答案】范文
To be honest, sometimes I had an idea to give up playing soccer, but I couldn’t when I met the special person. Although he had disability in the body, his strong will made him be a powerful and persistent person who could pursue his goal of becoming an outstanding player, ignoring others’ laughing and prejudice. It was his behavior that made me make up my mind to continue to play soccer no matter what happened. Luckily, he was willing to teach me how to pass and shot a soccer, and how to cooperate with other members. He always accompanied me, and at the moment there wasn’t any word in the world that could describe my appreciation to him. However, there was no doubt that he was my teacher indeed forever.
No pains, no gains. At last, my skills on playing allowed me to join a professional soccer team and I attended a soccer competition. My wonderful performance on the court won audience’s continuous cheers. To my amazement, our team defeated the opponents by 6 points and we won the first prize. After the game ended, I hugged my teacher tightly with tears full of my eyes. “ I am grateful for you forever.” I said excitedly. As for me, I realized that what had happened to me recently taught me a valuable lesson. Psychological fitness is the fundamental to be an excellent player, and overcoming the fear in mind is to make you powerful forever. Where there is a will, there is a way.

【答案】Just at that moment, many memories came back into my mind. When I was ill she was always the one taking care of me. When I had trouble with my study, she never lost faith in me and encouraged me to keep going. When I arrived home during the weekend, she always prepared my favourite food. All her kindness came back to me. I should be grateful for all she had done for me. I realized that I should return home immediately and say sorry to my mother.
When arriving home, I saw my mother sitting at the dinner table, worried and tired. She must have been looking for me everywhere. I was ready for her anger and shouts. However, before I could apologize, my mother saw me and gently said: “Oh, honey, thank God, you’re back! Come inside. You are probably very hungry? I cooked your favorite noodles, come and eat while they are still hot…” No longer able to control myself, I cried in her arms. “I’m sorry, mom, please forgive me.” I whispered to her through tears, extremely ashamed of myself.

My mom stood at the door, waiting for us. As soon as she saw us, she rushed over to give us a big hug and then led us to the dining room. We invited Roy to join us for dinner, and though he hesitated at first, he eventually accepted. As my mom filled up his plate, he said it brought back memories of happy days spent with his parents. Later, as he prepared to leave, I stepped inside and brought out a new bike. “This is for you,” my mom said with a smile.
Seeing the bike in front of him, he couldn’t hold back his tears. With tears of gratitude rolling down his cheeks, he kept saying, “Thank you so much.” My mom wiped his tears and put her arm around his shoulders. We told him we were shocked to learn that he had to walk 11 miles before going to school. So we hoped this bike would make his life easier. We helped him because we admired him.

The Thunder Strikers won! Cheers and laughter filled the air as the final whistle blew. In the middle of the celebration, my teammates surrounded me, offering high-fives and hugs. The coach, once uncertain about including me, now wore an approving smile. We gathered in a tight circle, exchanging celebratory gestures. The doubts before the match were now replaced with pride. As The Thunder Strikers, we celebrated this unexpected win, making our team bond stronger.
After this win, football became different for me. I used to dislike football, but after this unexpected win, everything changed. Football became something I enjoyed, bringing me happiness and a sense of achievement. I discovered my hidden skills on the football court. The bond formed during the match made every practice and game more fun. What started as an unwilling duty transformed into a journey of personal fulfillment. Now, with confidence, I continue to explore the details of the sport. Every practice is a chance for growth, and the football court has become a place for self-discovery and improvement.

【答案】One possible version:
And he gently put his fingers near her mouth. The baby horse leant close to him, and Martin smiled, feeling the warmth he had never felt before. For the first time, he realized how much joy he could find in caring for another living being. I could see something changed in Martin’s eyes. Watching the horse sleep, Martin cried, “I’ll be her mom and care for her.” From that day on, Martin made it his mission to care for the baby horse. As he did, he felt his anger and sadness slowly melting away. He became more empathetic, more patient, and more connected to the world around him. As we watched Martin’s transformation unfold, we knew that our “boy-horse communication program” had done its job. That was the true power of the ranch — not just to help boys in trouble, but to heal their spirits and give them hope for the future.

Starry was lovely. At night when we watched TV, she would come into Rachel’s lap and comfortably stay there.

【答案】范文
I sat down with my back to the fence and wondered what I should do then. Maybe, I could put a live fish on the spot just before Laynie came along. Or I could sneak a new fish into Molly’s bowl and just say that it grew. I sighed. I knew there was only one right thing to do. When I laid the short pencil, and crayons on the table, Laynie looked confused. Then I explained the whole story to her. “No!” she screamed, red-faced. With a big shove, she knocked everything off the table. But the worst part hadn’t come yet. “Laynie,” I said softly. “Molly isn’t going to grow either.” All of a sudden, she burst into tears.
I hugged her tightly and suggested, “How about a funeral for Molly”. Laynie buried Molly and planted some “forget-me-not” seeds on the grave. She watered them every morning. One day I saw Laynie carrying her watering can to the corner of the yard. “I’m growing ‘basketballs’ for you,” she announced, sprinkling a new patch of dirt. When she was gone, I dug up the spot with my bare hands. The “basketball seeds” were small and light, and they smelled like... oranges! When I finally stopped laughing, I replanted them. Then I headed for the house to explain gardening to Laynie one... more... time.
