“Are you nervous?” asked Diana.
“Not at all. I’ve spoken lots in public now. I’m reciting (背诵) a poem that is very emotional.”
At the hotel, Anne went to the performers’ dressing room. She suddenly felt shy. The other performers were from the city. She was from the country.
Unluckily, a professional speaker recited a poem before Anne. The audience was captivated (迷住). When it was time Anne walked slowly onto the stage. But she had a fear of the stage, and it paralyzed her completely. She stood without speaking. Then, she saw Gilbert in the audience. Anne thought that he was laughing at her. Actually, Gilbert was smiling because he was enjoying the evening. He thought Anne looked beautiful.
Anne did not want to fail in front of Gilbert. Her nervousness disappeared. She began her poem. She believed in herself.
When Anne finished there was lots of applause. She felt shy as she walked back to her seat.
After the concert, the lady from the city introduced Anne to everybody. A tall girl paid her a compliment (赞扬). They had dinner in an elegant dining room. Diana and Jane were invited, too. Anne felt very pleased with the evening.
“What an evening! Anne, your poem was great. I was worried at first. You were better than that professional woman,” said Jane.
“No, I wasn’t better than her. I’m only a schoolgirl, with a little talent. But I’m quite pleased that people liked my performance,” said Anne.
“Did you see all the diamonds (钻石) on those ladies? They were beautiful. Imagine being rich!” said Jane.
“We are rich. We’re sixteen years old. We’re happy and we’ve got imaginations. Look at that sky. It’s not lovelier with money. Do you want to be that tall girl and look sad all your life? Or the lady from the city. She is nice but she’s fat. You know you don’t, Jane Andrews,” said Anne.
“I don’t know. I think diamonds make you feel quite good,” said Jane.

A new study in Nature shows sea otters (海獭) returning to their home ground in Central California has helped slow down erosion (侵蚀) of the area’s stream banks and marsh (沼泽) edges by up to 90%.
Findings show that areas with large otter populations have less erosion, mainly because the sea otters like eating crabs so much. “It would cost tens of millions of dollars for humans to rebuild these stream banks and restore these marshes. The otters are stabilizing (稳定) them for free, in exchange for a big all-you-can-eat crab meal,” said biology professor Brian Silliman, at Duke University. “Remodeling a coastline is usually something only strong physical forces, like powerful storms or huge tidal flow change, can do,” he continued, “so it begs a question: Could similar results be achieved in other environments around the world?”
Like many California river mouths, Elkhorn once was home ground for otters, which need to eat around 20 to 25 pounds of food every day, with crabs being one of their favourite meals. But after fur traders hunted the local otter population nearly to extinction (灭绝), the number of crabs increased rapidly over the next century.
“Crabs eat salt marsh roots, dig into salt marsh soil, and over time can cause a salt marsh to wear away and disappear. This had been happening at Elkhorn for years until sea otters returned in the mid-1980s,” said the lead author of the study, Brent Hughes. “Today, years after the otters returned, marshes and stream banks became more stable.”
① To discover what role sea otters were playing in all this, the researchers carried on surveys across 13 tidal streams and small field experiments at five locations around the river mouth. ②They lasted over a six-year period. ③The information, collected on the ground, confirmed that the places with large populations of otters, erosion had slowed by the study’s end. ④ “The return of the sea otters didn’t completely fix the losses, but it did slow them down so that these places could become stable again, even with all the other problems,” Huges said.
Angelini, another member of the research team, saw hope in this new method. “All these challenges, like sea level rise and storms, seem difficult to deal with,” she said. “But this study shows us that if we really understand the ecosystem and know what tools to use, we can help make these systems healthier and more stable. And after all these years, we now see these amazing results. It’s a great story.”
34.What does Brent Hughes think of bringing back sea otters to the landscape like Elkhorn?
A.Resultful. B.Expensive. C.Creative. D.Harmful.
35.The following sentence would best be placed at ________.
Sea otters were not included in some test places but allowed to be used in others.

C.Large populations of crabs are the main cause of the erosion.
D.Nature protection depends on the reintroduction of the sea otters.

Camping is an experience that provides children with plenty of opportunities (机会) to develop various skills and characteristics.
Firstly, camps offer an environment where children can make true friends. Away from the expectations and stress of school, children can relax and make friends with their partners without difficulty. The activities and fun events provide a perfect opportunity for everyone to come together and form a friendship.
Secondly, camps help children learn important social skills. Being part of a community teaches children the importance of teamwork and open communication. Living in a small room with others allows children to solve problems on their own and build valuable social skills.
Thirdly, camps encourage children to become more independent. Camping is an excellent opportunity for kids to decide for themselves in a safe and caring environment. They learn to manage their daily choices and develop a sense of self-reliance (自立), which is important for their own growth.
Fourthly, camps help children experience success and become more confident. Camps offer non-competitive activities that allow children to explore their interests. Every day presents a new opportunity to achieve and succeed, which helps build children’s self-confidence.
Finally, camps provide opportunities for children to be physically active. With most children spending plenty of time indoors sitting, camps offer the opportunity to take part in outdoor activities like running, swimming and climbing. Such activities help young bodies stay healthy and active.

31.词义猜测题。根据“But she had a fear of the stage, and it paralyzed her completely. She stood without speaking.”可知,安妮站在舞台上由于恐惧,她无法思考,一声不吭地站在那儿,所以可猜测出paralyzed可能是“使人不能正常活动”的意思。故选B。
32.推理判断题。根据“ ‘We are rich. We’re sixteen years old. We’re happy and we’ve got imaginations. Look at that sky. It’s not lovelier with money. Do you want to be that tall girl and look sad all your life? Or the lady from the city. She is nice but she’s fat. You know you don’t, Jane Andrews,’ said Anne.”可知,安妮认为年轻、幸福、想象力等这些她拥有的美好东西,让她富有,而不是一些物质上的东西,由此可看出安妮有自己理解和赢得他人尊重的方式。故选D。

This had been happening at Elkhorn for years until sea otters returned in the mid-1980s,’ said the lead author of the study, Brent Hughes.”可知,有大量水獭的地区侵蚀较少,主要是因为海獭非常喜欢吃螃蟹。因此大量的螃蟹是造成侵蚀的主要原因。故选C。
37.主旨大意题。根据“A new study in Nature shows sea otters (海獭) returning to their home ground in Central California has helped slow down erosion (侵蚀) of the area’s stream banks and marsh (沼泽) edges by up to 90%.”与“‘But this study shows us that if we really understand the ecosystem and know what tools to use, we can help make these systems healthier and more stable. Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m writing to recommend Sandy as “The Sunshine Teenager” in our school.
Sandy is full of confidence and is never afraid of giving a speech in public and singing in class. Sandy is also so hard-working that she often does some extra exercises after class and asks teachers for some difficult questions to improve herself. Moreover, she is so helpful a girl that she is always willing to help the students who are absent from school with their lessons and help the teachers with their things. Sandy is good at using colors to express herself. She likes red best as red can help cheer herself up quickly when she is feeling blue. Green is also Sandy’s favorite color because she thinks wearing green can make herself look wiser.

Yours sincerely,
Li Lei
