Ⅰ.阅读理解 A (2024·重庆质量调研)Lots of people dislike rats. They slide around sewers (下水道).They get in the garbage. They can spread disease. It can be difficult to see their value—other than as an animal model for studying human illnesses. But rats have more to share. When the first Europeans came to Virginia, black rats took a ride in their ships. They went on to live with the Europeans and often built nests in the walls of people's homes. Those nests are full of information about early settlers. They show what specific materials the early settlers used, which helps historians find out what they could make and produce for themselves—and what is from across the ocean. In rats, DNA “really tells a story about the people,” says Emily Puckett, who studies how a species' DNA differs across its range.Another species—the brown rat can help tell a large story about how people spread around the globe, Puckett finds.Brown rats were originally from Eastern China and Mongolia.Puckett's DNA samples have shown that the brown rat spread south and east from there, to India and almost everywhere else. The DNA in its bones could help determine where the rats came from—and which cities might have been linked. At the University of York in England,David Orton studies animals that lived with ancient humans.Usually, when historians find remains of an ancient city, they want to dig and find more.“The trouble is that most of the time, the ancient cities tend to be underneath modern cities,” Orton says.“And you can't just go and dig the whole thing up.” But you can follow the rats.Rats are “very dependent on humans for their food supplies and for their shelter,” he explains. These rats have given us a new appreciation.“It is fascinating to think that these little creatures are stealing things and that now we're safeguarding them to make a study,” Maureen Elgersman Lee,a historian, says. 1.What do historians probably learn from the nest of rats? A.The appearance of their nests. B.The family members occupations. C.The living conditions of early settlers. D.The process of their food transportation. 根据第二段的“Those nests are full of information about early settlers”可知,这些巢穴充满了早期定居者的信息。 2.Why can the brown rat help tell a large story? A.Because it originated from Eastern China. B.Because its DNA reflected its spreading experience. C.Because it enjoyed travelling around the globe. D.Because its bones were full of information of cities. 根据题干可将题目定位至文章第三段,从第三段“Brown rats were originally...have been linked.” 3.What do David Orton's words mean? A.Humans offered food and shelter to rats. B.Historians could study the ancient city by digging. C.The ancient cities were mostly located above modern ones. D.Rats could offer a clue to learning the size of ancient cities. 4.What is a suitable title for the text? A.Rats Differ in Different Regions B.Rats Change People's Attitude C.Rats Reveal the History of Us D.Rats Depend on Humans for Living 解析:选C。 B (2024·丽水、湖州、衢州调研检测)Scientists have solved a puzzle about modern humans, after research showed that a famous skull of a human ancestor found in South Africa is a million years older than experts thought. This discovery has changed what we know of human history. The skull, which scientists have named“Mrs.Ples”, is from an apelike human relative from a species called Australopithecus africanus (非洲南方古猿).It was found near Johannesburg in 1947 and, based on evidence from its surroundings, it was thought to be between 2.1 and 2.6 million years old. This puzzled scientists, because although Mrs.Ples looks like a possible early ancestor of early humans, the first true humans had already evolved by the time she apparently lived. For this reason, scientists decided that, Australopithecus afarensis (阿法南方古猿), a similar species from Eastern Africa that lived about 3.85 and 2.95 million years ago, was our most likely ancestor instead. To get a more accurate age of Mrs.Ples, a team led by Professor Darryl Granger of Purdue University in Indiana, used a new method to date the sandy rocks where the skull lay. They measured the amount of certain chemicals in rocks, which form at a steady rate when they are exposed to cosmic rays (宇宙射线) on Earth's surface.Once rocks are buried, these chemicals stop forming and slowly disappear;the surviving amount reveals how much time has passed since the rocks (or bones) were on the surface. The new study shows that Mrs.Ples and other australopithecine bones nearby are between 3.4 and 3.7 million years old. This means they lived at the same time as their Eastern African relatives, so either group could have given rise to modern humans. However, team member Dr Laurent Bruxelles pointed out that over millions of years,at only 2,500 miles away, these groups had plenty of time to travel and to breed with each other. In other words, the groups could quite easily have met, had children together and both been part of the history of modern humans. 5.What can we learn about Mrs.Ples from the first two paragraphs? A.It is a skull found in Eastern Africa. B.It is the most possible ancestor of humans. C.It is a million years older than scientists expected. D.It is proved to live between 2.1 and 2.6 million years ago. 根据第一段中的“Scientists have solved...than experts thought”和第二段中的“The skull, which scientists have named ‘Mrs.Ples’”可知,“Mrs.Ples”的年龄比科学家们预计的要多100万年。 6.How did scientists get the accurate age of “Mrs.Ples”? A.By studying the effect of cosmic rays. B.By calculating the forming rate of chemicals. C.By locating the sandy rocks where the skull lay. D.By measuring the surviving amount of chemicals. D。 7.What can we infer from the new study? A.Modern humans came into being in Eastern Africa. B.Mrs.Ples travelled and had children with Eastern African relatives. C.The history of modern humans might begin 3.85 million years ago. D.Apelike species from Africa could have interacted with each other. 8.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A.Puzzle Unsolved B.Ancestor Mystery Solved C.Mrs.Ples:The Earliest Human Being D.Mrs.Ples:A Famous Skull 解析:选B。 Ⅱ. Who are your friends? Are they all similar in age to you?1.________But you can widen your social circle and gain lifeenriching benefits by becoming friends with someone younger or older than you.Having friends of different ages can greatly improve the quality of your life.
