Los Angeles is great, but sometimes you need a change. If you only have one day to spare, consider one of these quick day trips from Los Angeles to some amazing nearby destinations.
Palm Springs
If you want to exercise, check out the Indian Canyons that offer hiking trails (路线) and different attractive views. If relaxation is your goal, shop at the stores in Cabazon, or just sit by the pool. You can see works of famous artists including Picasso and Warhol in the Palm Spring Art Museum but the works are not for sale.
Solana Beach
It’s easy to get there from L. A.by train. And it’s a perfect way to day-trip because all the places are within walking distance of the station. Head down to the beach at Fletcher Cover or walk along the Cedros Design District for window shopping.
Balboa Island
Visitors can enter the man-made island by car, but it’s far easier and more fun to park your car on the Balboa Peninsula and take the boat for a quick trip across the water. Walk along Marine Avenue, the island’s main street. Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants, gift shops, and you can learn some local history in Island Museum.
San Juan Capistrano
A piece of California history and an old town make San Juan Capistrano an unusual day-trip destination with a lot of beauty and a little learning. Australia officially listed koalas across its eastern coast as “endangered” on Friday. Conservationists (自然环境保护者) said koala populations had crashed in much of eastern Australia over the past two decades, warning that they were now sliding towards extinction.
The koala, a globally recognized symbol of Australia’s unique wildlife, had been listed as “vulnerable (易危)” on the eastern coast just a decade earlier. “We are taking unprecedented (史无前例的) action to protect the koala,” the Minister of Environment, Sussan Ley said, highlighting a recent government promise of Aus$50 million to protect and recover koala habitats.
Environmentalists welcomed the koalas’ new status (地位) but blamed Australia’s failure to protect the species so far. “Koalas have gone from no-listing to vulnerable to endangered within a decade. That is a shockingly fast decline,” said WWF-Australia conservation scientist Stuart Blanch. “Today’s decision is welcome, but it won’t stop koalas from sliding towards extinction unless it’s accompanied by stronger laws to protect their forest homes.”
Alexia Wellbelove of the Humane Society International said east coast koalas could be extinct by 2050 if no action was taken. “We can’t afford any more clearing,” she said. “The extinction of koalas does not have to happen,” she added, “we must stop allowing their homes to be cleared for mines, new houses, agricultural projects and industrial logging (伐木).”
Australia’s koalas had been living on a “knife edge” even before the “Black Summer” bushfires of 2019-2020 because of land-clearing, drought, disease, car strikes and dog attacks, said Josey Sharrad, wildlife campaign manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national icon (象征),” Sharrad said, “The bushfires were the final straw. This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitat from development and land-clearing, and seriously deal with the influences of climate change.”
24.What is the problem mentioned in Para 1?
A.Koala populations have increased quickly.
B.Koalas enjoy too much popularity in Australia.
C.Koalas get crushed by other animals.
D.Koalas are at risk of extinction.
25.Why did environmentalists welcome the koala’s new status?
A.This would stop koalas from extinction.
B.They could blame the government’s failure.
C.This could lead to stronger action to protect koalas.
D.They may have time to recover koala habitats.
26.How does the author prove his idea?
A.By making a comparison. B.By analyzing figures.
C.By doing a survey. D.By quoting environmentalists’ words.
27.What’s the purpose of this text?
A.To call on people to protect Koala. B.To show the causes of Koalas’ disappearance.
C.To show Koalas’ important statue. D.To present environmentalists’ words.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has issued its first guidance on teens’ social media use. What’s most surprising in its databased recommendations is how little we know about how these apps affect our kids.
The relative newness of platforms like Snapchat and TikTok means little research is available about their long-term effects on teen and tween brains. Getting better data will require significant funding-and much more openness from tech companies.
What little evidence we do have unsurprisingly suggests that social media trades on motivators (激励因素) that aren’t great for young brains. Many kid start using social media “at the worst possible time when it comes to brain development”, says Mitch Prinstein, a psychologist and neuroscientist at the University of North Carolina(UNC).
“Thing like the ‘like’ button and artificial intelligence(in general)are going to affect young people’s brains in a way that’s very different from adult brains when it comes to the desire to stay online and to say or do almost anything to get followers.” When it comes to social interactions (互动), he compares kids’ brains to a car with a huge gas pedal and weak brakes (刹车).
Earlier this year, Prinstein and his UNC colleagues published the results of one of the first studies of how the teenage brain reacts to social media. The team surveyed a group of middle schoolers to understand their social media habits, and then stuck them in an MRI machine to watch their brains as they reacted to social rewards or punishments. They found that 12-year-olds who habitually checked social media had different neural patterns, with more activity over time in parts of the brain associated with motivation, salience(or where attention is focused)and cognitive (认知的) control.
The team didn’t weigh in on whether those differences were good or bad, or whether the relationship was causal or correlational. But their work points to the need for more research. It should also remind parents of the need to be keenly aware of social media’s hidden influence on still-developing brains.
28.What issue regarding social media apps does the APA report highlight?
A.Their effects on social connections. B.The lack of data on their influence.
C.The dishonesty of their developers D.The ineffectiveness of their motivators.
29.Which word can best describe young brains in relation to social interactions?
A.Uncontrolled. B.Sensitive C.Unpredictable. D.Productive
30.What did Prinstein’s team discover about teenagers who regularly usesocial media?
A.They are usually highly motivated B.They find it difficult to concentrate
C.They have greater cognitive control D.Their brains show unique features
31.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Empowering Teens in the Digital Age
B.How to Guide Teens’ Social Media Engagement
C.The Importance of Healthy Social Media Habits
D.The Hidden Influence of Social Media on Young Minds

Years ago, many Mexican gray wolves lived in the United States. In the 1800s, cattle farmers were worried that these wolves would hunt and eat their farm animals. During the 1800s and 1900s, farmers killed many of these wolves to try to protect their animals. These wolves almost went extinct.
In 1976, the U. S. government passed the Endangered Species Act. These wolves were finally protected! And with help, the species continues to survive today.
The White Mountain Apache Tribe(部落) has played an important role in keeping this species alive. They live on a large area of land in Arizona called the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. This area is also a wolf habitat.
Krista Beazley is a wolf biologist on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. She tracks the movements of Mexican gray wolves that live on the land. Scientists have put special radio collars on wolves. These collars send out beeping signals(蜂鸣信号) to a special hand-held antenna (手持天线). Biologists like Beazley use these antennas to track the wolves. She also follows their footprints and droppings. Wolf droppings tell biologists what the wolf ate, where it spends much of its time, and if it is sick. Beazley makes sure the wolves are alive and healthy.
The number of Mexican gray wolves living on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation is growing. Despite this remarkable progress, the species is still endangered. The White Mountain Apache Tribe continues to try to protect these wolves.
The White Mountain Apache Tribe also works to protect many other rare plant and animal species. For example, they saved the Apache trout from extinction by closing certain areas to fishing and by building trout habitats. They also protect habitats for animals like the Mexican spotted owl. The White Mountain Apache Tribe has a close connection with all of nature. Tribe members believe humans must honor the animals and nature around them.
32.Why did American farmers kill Mexican gray wolves during the 1800s and 1900s?
A.To protect their territorial integrity. B.To preserve their farm animals.
C.To contribute to the pass of an act. D.To sell the wolves for a fortune.
33.What is the function of the special radio collars on wolves?
A.Transmitting signals. B.Tracking their footprints.
C.Ensuring their safety. D.Identifying them clearly.
34.What can we know about the underlined word “trout”?
A.A kind of plant. B.A kind of bird.
C.A kind of fish. D.A kind of wolf.
35.What is the attitude of the White Mountain Apache Tribe towards nature?
A.People should stop the economy from developing.
B.Our nature provides us with a good habitat to live in.
C.Every species should have its living environment.
D.It is everyone’s duty to respect and protect nature.

When we eat some popular kinds of shellfish (贝类海产), we leave behind large amounts of shells. 36 Several projects now aim to put them back into waterways.
In the U.S., shells cast aside in restaurants and other businesses are being collected, cleaned and thrown back into waterways. 37 One of the latest projects on oysters (牡蛎) takes place in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The shells were put into the state’s Mullica River and helped form new or expanded oyster groups. Free-floating baby oysters connect to the shells and grow on them. 38 It has also helped eateries (小餐馆) save money on dealing with their shells, according to Scott Stueber, a fisheries biologist with the Department of Environmental Protection.
39 In nature, oysters are cleaners. One adult oyster can remove pollutants from about 190 liters of water a day. So oysters can improve water quality. Oyster groups also are being planted along some coastlines to strengthen shores. Besides, oyster reefs can protect shorelines. Such reefs can also be homes for sea creatures and provide food for humans.
Communities, environmental groups and governments around the world have had oyster reefs recycled and replanted in recent years. It’s happening in many states of the United States. 40 Since 2009, the Harte Research Institute at Texas A&M University has collected about 800,000 kilograms of shells and rebuilt about 100,000 square meters of oyster reefs.
A.And most of them end up in waterways.
B.For example, each year in Maryland, about 70 cubic meters of recycled shells are turned into oyster groups.
C.The shells form a new living place for sea creatures like oysters.
D.The Mullica River is actually home to some of the oysters.
E.However, these shells are no longer thrown into waste containers.
F.The project has kept about 60,000 kilograms of shells out of landfills (填埋).
G.Despite the economic benefits, the main goal is to improve the environment.

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

根据固定搭配“in celebration of”可知,in为介词,后接名词作宾语。故填celebration。
故填has been performed。
此处“with dancers jumping up onto chairs, balance beams, or upturned vases with balance and skills”为with的复合结构作伴随状语,表示“舞狮时舞者们会做什么”,构成with+宾语+宾语补足语(-ing)的结构。故填with。
故填while。
故填a。
故填which。
根据句意以及“the world’s”可知,此处应用形容词最高级修饰名词“lion dance show”。故填largest。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy.

The mother was ashamed when she heard that.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.
