I felt so hopeless and alone that I thought everything was impossible. On one such day, I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home, with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the sidewalk toward me. Though I had never seen him before, I did not want him to see that I was in such low spirits, so I turned my head away and hoped to hurry past. I thought 第 5 页 共 12 页 he'd walk on by, but he moved until he was directly in front of me, waited until I looked up, and then smiled. Looking into my eyes, this stranger spoke in a quiet voice:"Whatever is wrong will pass. You're going to be OK, just hang on." He then smiled again and walked away. I can't explain the effect of that man's unexpected kindness and caring! He gave me the one thing that I'd lost completely—hope. I looked for him in our school to thank him, but never saw him again. That was thirty years ago. And I've never forgotten that moment. Over the years, whenever I see someone who is in trouble, I will always think of that young man and try to give a flash of hope in the dark wherever I can. I carry things for people when they are too heavy for them, sit with naughty babies in the waiting room while their mothers are busy, or talk to tired couples at the checkout line or it could be anything. If you keep your head up, your heart will show you the place that needs hope. 24. Where did the writer meet with the young man? A. In the school. B. In the school bus. C. In the classroom. D. The author has given a lot of help to others in order to ________. It can be known from the passage that ________. A. the young man always tried his best to help those who were in trouble B. it was the young man's smile and words that made the author feel hopeful C. the author had never been praised by others before he met with the young man D. the author traveled to a lot of places to look for the young man but failed 第 6 页 共 12 页 C English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mails are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words. However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweetmeats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them. And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next? English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的 ); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it. 28. According to the passage ______. A. boxing rings should be round B. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree C. there should be an egg in an eggplant D. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things 29. Which of the following is the correct plural form (复数形式)? A. Beeth. B. Meese. C. Geese. D. Tooth. 30. Which of the following has the similar meaning? A. Quite a lot and quite a few. B. Overlook and oversee. C. A wise man and a wise guy. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell. 第 7 页 共 12 页 31. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______. A. Lazy B. crazy C. clever D. stupid D Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B⁺, compared to a B⁻ for those who did not. “What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who'd done our writing intervention (干预 ), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test fear and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.” But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance. 32. What do the students start worrying about before an exam? A. Whether they can pass the exam. B. What other students do during the test. C. Whether they have remembered the materials. D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper. 第 8 页 共 12 页 33. What is the solution developed by researchers? A. Making the students focused on the test. B. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test. C. Having the students write about their worries about the test. D. Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test. 34. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ________. A. became less nervous before the test B. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings C. were better at controlling their feelings D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings 35. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________. A. writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit B. we can only write about our worries right before an exam C. the best place to write about our worries is in the test room before an exam D. it doesn’t matter where and when we write about our worries before an exam 第二节 (共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 If you have a hard time getting along with your teachers, going to class can be a nightmare (噩梦). When she returned to England, Nightingale started a nursing home for women. During the Crimean War (克里米亚战争) in 1854, she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What they saw there was scary. Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen and smelled. The officer there did not want any women to tell him how to run a hospital, either. But the brave nurses stuck to work. After the war, she was honored for her services by Queen Victoria. She raised money to build the Nightingale Training School in London.
