Double Ninth Festival is also called Chongyang Festival. It is a day for people to climb mountains, drink chrysanthemum (菊花) wine and eat Chongyang cake.
A famous poem about this festival by Wang Wei in the Tang Dynasty described the scene and feeling of mountain climbing. It says, “Alone, a lonely stranger in a foreign land, I doubly pine for kinsfolk on a holiday. I know my brothers would, with dogwood spray in hand, climb up mountain and miss me so far away”. Now, family members or good friends get together to climb mountains to enjoy the beautiful scenery and share happiness of the holiday with each other.
Chrysanthemums are in full bloom (盛开) during the festival, so it is a pleasure to enjoy big chrysanthemum shows. People always admire chrysanthemums with family on that day. And they think that by drinking chrysanthemum wine, all kinds of diseases and disasters can be driven away.
Chongyang cake is a kind of steamed cake which has two floors with nuts (坚果) and red dates (枣) put between them. Since cake in Chinese is pronounced “gao” which means high, personal progress is thought to be made in the following days after people eat the cake.

XINHUA—To reduce pressure on students, Junior high school students in Beijing will only be scored on six of their 10 senior high school entrance exams from 2025, while the remaining four tests will be given a letter grade (等级) A, B, C, D. The Beijing Municipal Education Commission announced on Tuesday, Sep. 26, 2023 that the scoring system and evaluation methodology of the exams would be changed to better reflect (反映) the development of the cultural, physical, political and psychological skills of students moving up from junior to senior high.
In China, high school education includes junior high (from Grade 7 to 9) and senior high (from Grade 10 to 12). Li Yi, director of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, said the present exam system depends too heavily on rote memorization, that is to say, the students only need to memorize the things their teachers teach them without thinking. He also said that teachers have little time to spend on experimental teaching methods and extracurricular activities. When you think of seafood, which place will come to your mind? Qingdao, Xiamen or Weihai? But you may never think of Xinjiang for sure. Recently, fishery products produced in Xinjiang have become popular, especially after Japan put nuclear-contaminated water (核污染水) into the sea.
In Nilka County in Xinjiang, about 6,000 tons of rainbow trout, a kind of fish, will be produced this year. Rainbow trout belongs to the same family as salmon, which is a kind of well-known seafood. It tastes like salmon too.
Why do farmers there choose to grow fish? The weather in some parts of Xinjiang is seldom hot, and the rivers are fed by meltwater (融水) from the Tianshan Mountains. Water deeper than 6 meters always stays at 10℃. As the meltwater is very clean and cold, it’s a “comfortable” home for fish, Li Chunyu, a worker at a fish company said.
To make sure the river stays clean, the company uses machines to clean fish waste in the water. They also use net cage (网箱) that are good for the environment. The nets are about 51 meters wide and lie 25 meters deep in the river.
Meanwhile, in Xinjiang, whiteleg shrimp, another kind of fish, can also grow well. Saline soil (盐碱土) covers a large part of the desert where few plants are able to grow. Farmers used to put water from the Yellow River onto the farmland to wash away the salt. This was a waste of salty water.
Scientists then decided to create “seawater” with the salty water by adding in some other chemicals (化学物质). Whiteleg shrimps can live well in this kind of water. They taste no different from the same kind of shrimp that grows in the sea.
Thanks to the rich natural resources (资源) in Xinjiang and the wisdom of the scientists, salmon, shrimps and many other kinds of “seafood” can become a delicacy (佳肴) on the dining tables not only in Xinjiang homes, but also across the nation, which protects us from nuclear-contaminated water at the same time.
32. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By making an explanation. B. By asking questions.
C. By giving an example. D. By listing numbers.
33. To avoid water pollution caused by growing fish, the company _________.
①clean the water with machines ②grows one kind of fish once a year
③use environment-friendly net cages ④cuts down the fish production
A. ①③ B. ③④ C. ①②③ D. ②③④
34. What can you infer from this passage?
A. Life will not be different without seafood. B. Japan won’t let out nuclear-contaminated water.
C. China won’t be short of fishery products. D. Xinjiang is rich in natural resources.
35. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?
A. The Reasons to Grow “Seafood” in Xinjiang.
B. Xinjiang “Seafood” or Japanese Seafood.
C. Different Kinds of “Seafood” in Xinjiang.

①Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Different accidents can leave people with terrible wounds both in body and mind. Often, they remember these experiences in their awful dreams.
②Now scientists think they are close to developing a kind of medicine, which will help people forget bad memories. The medicine is designed to be taken soon after a scary experience. They hope it might cut down, or possibly clean up, the effect (影响) of painful memories. In November, scientists tested a medicine on people in the US and France. The medicine stops the body sending out chemicals that make memories remain in the brain. So far, the research has suggested that only the effects of memories in mind may be cut down, not that the memories are cleaned up.
③ ▲ Some scientists think it is a bad idea, while others support it.
④Supporters say it could lead to a kind of medicine that prevents or treats soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
⑤“Some memories can destroy people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or awful dreams at night. They usually come with very painful feelings,” said a professor at Harvard Medical School. “The medicine could cut down lots of that suffering.”
⑥But those who are against the research say changing memories is very dangerous because memories make us different from others. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.
⑦“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I’m not sure if I want to forget those feelings,” said Rebecca Dresser, a medical scientist.

阅读下文并回答问题。
How many names do you have? Have you once changed your name? Some people change their names for some reasons.
Film stars, singers, sportsmen and some other famous people often change their names because they want names with special sound and meaning. They choose the “new name” for themselves instead of the name their parents gave them when they were born.
Some people have another reason for changing their names. For example, Ken Lee changed his name to Li Kaiming when he moved to our country, a new place for him. Also, after moving to Canada, Lu Daxiong changed his name to a usual name Dave Lu.
For most people, name change is an easy process. However, you should pay attention to the following tips if you want to have a new name.
Choose your new name carefully.
Legally changing your name is a serious decision, so you should make sure that you choose a name that you like enough to keep. Before beginning the process of changing your name, practice signing it and have a few people close to you call you by that name to make sure you like it.
Make sure your new name will be legal.
The primary concern here is that your new name doesn’t imply “fraudulent intent” (i.e. that you aren’t trying to gain something good by misleading others about your identity), as this will prevent you from being able to legally change it.
45. Is it an easy process for most people to change their names?

46. How many pieces of advice does the writer give you if you want to have a new name?

As nine is pronounced “jiu” meaning long in Chinese, so the number nine is given the meaning of long life. And in 1989, Double Ninth Festival was set as Senior’s Day—a day to respect the elderly and to let them enjoy themselves.

The six subjects that will continue to have exam results scored are Chinese, math, English, physics, physical education, ethics and rule of law. The four subjects that will receive a letter grade are geography, biology, chemistry and history. A few high schools in Beijing are already making changes.
To make the exams more colorful, while the chemistry, history, geography and biology exams will be given a letter grade, the ethics and rule of law exam will be open-book to encourage students to have more analysis-thinking and problem-solving abilities.

A ①③ B. ③④ C. ①②③ D. ②③④
34 What can you infer from this passage?
A. Life will not be different without seafood. B. Japan won’t let out nuclear-contaminated water.

35. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?
