A small white envelope (信封) stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree and it has been there for the past ten years or so.
It all began because my husband Justin hated Christmas—oh, not the true meaning of Christmas. Compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts and running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and a pair of gloves for Grandma, spending money is nothing.
Knowing Justin felt the same way, I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties as gifts. I reached for something special just for Justin. The idea came in an unusual way. Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling (摔跤) at the junior level. Shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored (赞助) by a local church. These boys, dressed in such worn-out shoes that shoe ties seemed to be the only thing holding them together, while our boys were in their blue and gold uniforms and new wrestling shoes.
As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets (头盔) to protect their ears. Well, our boys ended up winning. Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot of talent, but losing like this could take the heart out of them.” Justin loved kids, and he knew them. That’s when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to the church without leaving my name.
On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and since then the envelope has become the highlight of our Christmas.
28. What may Justin hate about Christmas?
A. Sharing joy. B. Spreading love. C. Spending money. D. Choosing gifts.
29. What might be the main reason for the church team’s failure?
A. They were poor in skills. B. They didn’t have enough members.
C. They didn’t have helmets and proper shoes. D. They didn’t have the talent.
30. What was the writer’s Christmas gift for her husband that year?
A. A ticket to a wrestling match. B. Wrestling helmets and shoes.
C. An white envelop with a note. D. An act of kindness as he wished.
31. Why is the small white envelope so important for the writer and her husband?
A. Because it brought the biggest smile to Justin for that Christmas.
B. Because it was the first time for them to send gifts to the church.
C. Because it showed the writer’s love and care to her husband.
D. Because behind the envelope lies the true meaning of Christmas.

For so long, failure has been pictured as something bad, something to be afraid of and something to be kept a secret. But a Swedish psychologist, Samuel West, has decided to put our worst fears on the table. He is opening a museum—the Museum of Failure—in Sweden, this June.
Instead of showing success, as museums usually do, the Museum of Failure shows over 60 “failed” products from big companies such as Nokia, Apple and Coca-Cola. “I really hope you see that how these famous brands screw up,” West told The New York Times. “I hope that makes you feel less nervous about learning something new.”
West’s opinion isn’t a new one. Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” And this idea has been accepted by lots of companies in the US. Silicon Valley, for example, is the home of some of the world’s most creative companies, yet its slogan (口号) turns out to be, quite surprisingly, “Fail fast, fail often.” There are reasons for this. “The best companies are those that encourage failure, welcome out-of-the-box thinking, and allow mistakes and see what happens,” wrote Simon Casuto of Forbes.
▲ They are worried that if failure becomes a “symbol of honor”, it may even be seen as “uncool” when someone tries to reduce the risk of failure. This may push people to care too little and try too little.
So it’s important that you set apart the two kinds of failure—the kind that makes you a loser and the kind that takes you forward. The key is whether you’ve learned something from your mistakes. “Learning is the only process that turns failure into success,” West told The Guardian. “If you don’t learn from your failures, then you’ve really failed.”
32. What does the underlined phrase “screw up” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Tell lies. B. Make mistakes. C. Achieve goals. D. Deal with troubles
33. What is the deeper meaning behind the slogan “Fail fast, fail often” ?
A. The more failure, the better.
B. Failure is more important than success.
C. The more you fail, the less success you achieve.
D. Accept failure, and try new things.
34. Which of the following can be put in the ________?
A. But some people are doubtful of this “culture of failure”.
B. However, some people think failures should be avoided.
C. Many people believe that failure is the thing moving you forward.
D. There are two kinds of failure.
35. What’s West’s opinion about failure?
A. Failure’s value lies in learning from it.
B. There’s no need to let others know your failure.
C. It’s not necessary to try to reduce the risk of failure.
D. Failure is the key to putting us forward.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. A

If your family loves gardening, make labels (标签) together for your plants and tools. Making fun labels in your target language together can also help you connect with loved family members. It opens up more opportunities like family contests. You could surprise each other with notes on pillows, inside drawers—any place your family will find them. Using these words later recalls these family memories.

【答案】例文
You harvest what you sow. My biggest harvest in the last three years is the confidence I gain.
I used to be a shy girl with low confidence. I thought I was not good-looking or smart, and I couldn’t do things well. I just hid myself in my small world and never tried to make any change. Then one day, I watched a speech made by a disabled man. He was born without arms and legs, but he learned to live like a normal person. Many people are greatly encouraged by his spirits. Me, too. From then on, I began to look for the good in myself and step out of my comfort zone. Now, I’m more confident than I used to.

34 Which of the following can be put in the ________?
A. But some people are doubtful of this “culture of failure”.
B. However, some people think failures should be avoided.

Why Learning a New Language Is Good for the Whole Family?
Ever thought of making language learning part of your family’s activities? Learning a new language together can have unexpected benefits for the whole family.
Combining (兼顾) family time and language learning time is a great way to have more quality time with your family. Learning a new language with family can be a fun group activity. Everyone loves a game night or movie night. You can play games like Bingo, using vocabulary from the target language. Or maybe you have a particular vacation destination (目的地) and connect with those you love.
Language is all about communication and connection. Learning a new language brings family members closer because they talk to each other all the time when learning. All you have to do is to change to your new language and practice with your family members whenever you want—no classroom needed. Telling family stories with what you have recently learned is a good place to start, which could inspire questions and additional conversations, and even create a familect—secret words and phrases shared only among the members of your family.
Each family is really its own little social world, and that world is being built through language. The power of language learning lies in its ability to bring people together.
