Standing on the South Pole at the start of the year with the wind blowing across the Antarctic, travel blogger Johnny Ward felt a wave of relief.
Just a week before, in early January 2024, he’d struggled through snow and ice to climb to the top of the Vinson Massif, Antarctica’s highest peak. Years before, in 2017, he’d become the first Irish person to visit every country in the world.
Now, after decades of traveling and mountaineering, Ward could claim another world first — the Ultimate Explorer’s Grand Slam (大满贯), which involves reaching the highest peak on every continent, and visiting both the North and South Poles in addition to visiting every country.
“I feel relieved,” Ward recalled as he slowly made his way back to his home in Thailand after climbing to the top of the Vinson Massif and then setting foot on the South Pole. “But also I’m aware I’m a normal guy, not a world-class athlete, so I guess it was more about resilience and determination more than any ability. Although I met with lots of barriers, I overcame them one by one.”
Ward had previously devoted a decade of his life, between 2007 and 2017, to visiting every country in the world. The incredible journey saw him hitchhike (搭便车) a ride on a container ship from Oman to Socotra in Yemen, travel overland from Cairo to Cape Town and travel from South Korea to Australia by bus and boat.
“It had been a huge life goal, over a decade of my life, and then when I finished that I was aimless and had no idea what to do next,” he said. “I started eating badly, drinking too much, putting on weight and I ignored my business.”
Ward decided that the best way to overcome this was to challenge himself again. He began running ultramarathons (超级马拉松) and climbing mountains, and soon found that with extreme purpose and direction, he was back to loving life again.
So where will Ward go next? Space? The bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point of the ocean? “All good things come after suffering, and I want to share that with people. So that’s the next plan,” he said.
24.What did Johnny Ward achieve in early January 2024?
A.He climbed to the highest peak in Antarctica.
B.He set a new record for traveling in Antarctica.
C.He became the first person to visit the South Pole.
D.He became the first Irish person to visit every country.
25.What does the underlined word “resilience” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The ability to bounce back from difficulties. B.The quality of being strong and honest.
C.The skill of achieving goals quickly. D.The power to control one’ s emotions.
26.How did Johnny Ward feel after achieving his life goal in 2017?
A.Relaxed. B.Satisfied. C.Lost. D.Excited.
27.Which of the following can best describe Johnny Ward?
A.Helpful and motivated. B.Athletic and generous.
C.Proud and self-centered. D.Determined and strong-willed.

Perfume (香味;香水) has held a special place in human history. The traditional making process involves collecting raw materials, producing oils, mixing, aging and quality control. For centuries, perfumers have merely relied on their own senses. But now modern-day perfumers are beginning to look beyond their noses. They are, instead, turning to neurotechnology
Perfume now can be designed to stimulate emotional responses using neuroscents (神经气味) shown by biometric measures — the use of biological data to analyze human responses — to help inspire different positive feelings such as calm, joy or sleepiness. Neurotechnology can also help perfumers analyze the chemical composition of these neuroscents and find new combinations of raw materials that can produce similar or enhanced effects.
Researcher Hugo Ferreira is trying to build a database of neuroscents. “With sight and hearing, you can imagine the face of a loved one or the favourite tune. It’s hard to imagine a smell though it can stimulate a series of emotions and memories.”
Ferreira explains this is due to the structure of the olfactory (嗅觉的) system. Messages from scent receptors are sent through the olfactory bulb to different brain areas that control everything from memory or thirst to stress reactions. Olfaction is the most diverse sense with many different receptors. It’s estimated that there are about 400 different olfactory receptor gene families. Among other things these various connections may explain how we can “smell fear, or victory.”
L’Oréal, a French multinational personal care company, has partnered with neurotechnology company Emotiv to create a scent choice “experience”. During 2023, shoppers at certain stores used a device to discover which scents appealed to them. Results so far show that 95% of customers who used the device found the right perfume. Another perfume from Givenchy, a French luxury fashion and perfume house, has been a bestseller for years, which includes a special substance chosen after biometric research.
However, perfume writer Katie Puckrik says she’d like to “design her own perfume”. “Leave the magic to the artists. Why do we need a computer to tell us what our nose already knows? Finding a new favorite scent by chance is a rare moment of grace we should allow ourselves,” she says.
28.How can neurotechnology function in the perfume-making process?
A.By distinguishing one scent from the other.
B.By exploring the best way to obtain special oil.
C.By finding the scents most appealing to people.
D.By offering perfumers information of materials.
29.What does Ferreira want to indicate in paragraph 3?
A.The close connection among our senses.
B.The great complexity of the olfactory system.
C.The relationship between emotion and memory.
D.The significance of having a good imagination.
30.Why are the perfume brands mentioned in the text?
A.To show applications of neurotechnology.
B.To collect more data for biometric research.
C.To illustrate the fierce competition between them.
D.To stress their dominance in the perfume industry.
31.What is Katie Puckrik’s attitude towards the new technology?
A.Tolerant. B.Unclear. C.Supportive. D.Negative.

Science is always seen as hard-core and hard to understand. But could you imagine hundreds of people being attracted by the cover of a science magazine?
The achievement was completed after Wang Yixi and his team made the cover of an October issue of Structure, a US-based Cell Press journal. The cover shows a Chinese ink painting that vividly shows the process in which a special enzyme (酶) involved in the biosynthesis (生物合成) of an important organic compound is activated―the latest breakthrough by a Chinese scientific research team. Another one of his popular works that carries distinctive Chinese elements is a composite image, describing a scientist as the folk goddess Nyuwa, carrying her newly discovered compound to fill a crack in the sky.
While studying chemistry at university, Wang Yixi often came across an experimental preparation process that he had to explain, but the amount of text was too large and abstract. A she had been interested in drawing, and related software like Photoshop, he decided to turn his graphics into a fine art. He went on to study 3D graphics software in order to better display the microscopic structures in his field and improve the presentation of his papers.
It didn’t take long before his classmates and professors noticed his talents and asked him to help them with their papers. By word of mouth, more people beat a path to Wang’s door and were willing to pay for his service. Over the past four years, Wang and his team have come up with more than 10,000 visual works for academic papers across a variety of fields, many of which have made their way to the world’s top academic journals, including Nature, Science and Cell.
“Every scientific paper is innovative, and graphics are an essential part of scientific papers,” Wang says, adding that what he tries to achieve is an explanation of models or methods, to showcase experimental results, visually process data or compare differences among experiments.
32.What play a special role in Wang’s works?
A.Fairytales. B.Chinese elements. C.Rich colors. D.Complex structures.
33.What can we learn about Wang Yixi from paragraph 3?
A.He preferred painting to Chemistry. B.He developed useful mapping software.
C.He had an active mind to solve problem. D.He had trouble conducting his experiment.
34.How does Wang make abstract papers easily understood?
A.By visualizing them vividly. B.By showing them accurately.
C.By explaining them in detail. D.By constructing them uniquely
35.Which is the best title for the text?
A.The power of art B.Dilemmas of science
C.Mysteries of Chemistry D.Inspiration from science

We’ve all been there: you say the wrong thing and you want the ground to swallow you up! 36
I called someone the wrong name.
What may be worse than not remembering someone’s name is calling the person by the wrong name. For instance, you’re speaking to a friend's new husband, and you call him by the ex-husband’s name. Or you refer to your new boss by the ousted boss’s name. Try to acknowledge your mistake with a little humour. Perhaps say, “Oh, I really know you’re Mike and not Tom.” 37 If your mistake obviously insulted a person of authority, such as your boss, again apologize for the lapse.
38
You just mocked an acquaintance who, you discover too late, is standing nearby. Since the floor isn’t going to open up and swallow you whole, you’re going to have to deal with this. You must offer an apology, and it must be a good one. Don’t say, “I didn’t really mean it.” You probably did mean it and denying it will just worsen the error. 39 Instead, apologize for the effects of what you said.
My friend has bad breath.
How do you tell your friends they have breath that would kill the devil? Here’s an easy, roundabout way: pop a piece of gum into your own mouth and then offer one to your friend. 40 And if they accept your offer, everyone wins. If not? Well, it depends on how strong your friendship is. You either risk offending your friend with the truth or ignore the problem and excuse yourself to get a breath of fresh air.
A.I really put my foot in my mouth.
B.Apologize for your slipup and let it drop.
C.Whatever the reason, don’t make a big deal of it.
D.This way, you won’t be saying anything outright.
E.You'd think these matters would be your business alone.
F.Here are some tips on how to deal with awkward situations.
G.In other words, don’t apologize for what you think, feel, or said about the person.

Ms. Pinelli was walking her dog, Boomerang, past our driveway when I told her that it had been barking throughout the afternoon. We assumed it probably saw a squirrel or something.
After school the next day, I was practising the piano when Boomerang started barking again. (No, my piano playing isn’t that bad!) Anyway, it never used to bark when I practiced. Ten minutes later, it was still barking. Jumping up, I decided to play detective instead of the piano. The Pinellis’ trees were small, and I didn’t spot anything that disturbed it in them. The curtains were open, but I couldn’t see Boomerang looking out. I wondered if something was wrong.
After thinking it over, I called Ms. Pinelli at work and told her Boomerang was barking nonstop again. Ms. Pinelli returned immediately and put it into her car and drove off.
Later, after dinner, she dropped by my house and told me that the vet (兽医) had checked it out. Boomerang was fine but it probably missed Leo, Ms. Pinelli’s son. He used to be its playmate but started college in the fall. During our conversation, I knew how Boomerang got its name. It was like a boomerang (飞镖) when playing fetch, running off and then returning with a ball with Leo. To tell the truth, I missed Leo too because he had taught me how to throw a ball in the yard.
We felt bad for the dog and were eager to find a way to help it cope with Leo’s absence. Ms. Pinelli mentioned that she would leave the TV on the next day, hoping that the noise would distract it.
The following day, when I got off the bus, I could hear Boomerang’s barking loud and clear. I rushed to have a check, finding Boomerang pacing back and forth restlessly. Ms. Pinelli was busy with her computer work. She asked me whether I could do her a favor to keep an eye on it for a while. I gladly said, “Yes!”

We all know humans love to talk. Just look at how much we use our phones! But why is socializing so important?
First, it improves our mental health. Talking to people gives us an opportunity to hear our thought out loud. This gives us a sense of relief and allows us to get useful feedback from whomever is listening. If you're feeling lonely, reach out to someone you trust and tell them how you feel. It's actually the best cure.
Second, it makes us more successful. Lots of successful business people credit their success to their ability to network and build relationships. So start attending more conferences, open a LinkedIn account, or invite someone you admire out to dinner and start picking their brain for ideas. These can all lead to a better career.
Finally, it expands our understanding of the world. Talking to people from different backgrounds allows us to experience a world of knowledge that's different from our own. Taking the time to see the world through someone else's eyes allows us to encounter things we never knew existed.

根据第四段“But also I’m aware I’m a normal guy, not a world-class athlete, so I guess it was more about resilience and determination more than any ability. Although I met with lots of barriers, I overcame them one by one. (但我也知道我是一个普通人,不是世界级的运动员,所以我想这更多的是关于resilience和决心,而不是任何能力。尽管我遇到了很多障碍,但我一个接一个地克服了它们。)”可知,这里描述约翰尼·沃德在克服一个又一个困难时具备的品质,应该是有能力一次又一次的面对并解决困难,所以resilience的意思应该是“恢复力”,和选项A意思一致。故选A。
根据第六段““It had been a huge life goal, over a decade of my life, and then when I finished that I was aimless and had no idea what to do next,” he said. “I started eating badly, drinking too much, putting on weight and I ignored my business.”(他说:“这是我十多年来的一个巨大的人生目标,当我完成这一目标时,我毫无目标,不知道下一步该做什么。我开始吃得不好,喝太多酒,体重增加,我忽视了我的生意。”)”可知,约翰尼·沃德在2017年实现人生目标后变得没有目标了,很迷茫。故选C。

D.Negative.
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.A 31.D
根据第一段中“ But now modern-day perfumers are beginning to look beyond their noses. They are, instead, turning to neurotechnology ( 神经技术 ).(但现在,现代调香师开始把目光投向鼻子之外。相反,他们转向了神经技术。)”和第二段“Perfume now can be designed to stimulate emotional responses using neuroscents (神经气味) shown by biometric measures — the use of biological data to analyze human responses — to help inspire different positive feelings such as calm, joy or sleepiness. Neurotechnology can also help perfumers analyze the chemical composition of these neuroscents and find new combinations of raw materials that can produce similar or enhanced effects. (香水现在可以被设计成使用生物特征测量显示的神经官能症来刺激情绪反应,即使用生物数据来分析人类反应,以帮助激发不同的积极情绪,如平静、快乐或嗜睡。神经技术还可以帮助调香师分析这些神经官能症的化学成分,并找到可以产生类似或增强效果的原材料的新组合。)”可知,神经技术通过寻找最吸引人的气味在香水制作过程中发挥作用。故选C项。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中Ferreira所说“With sight and hearing, you can imagine the face of a loved one or the favourite tune. It’s hard to imagine a smell though it can stimulate a series of emotions and memories. (有了视觉和听觉,你可以想象所爱之人的脸或最喜欢的曲调。很难想象一种气味,尽管它能激发一系列的情绪和记忆。)”以及第四段中“Ferreira explains this is due to the structure of the olfactory (嗅觉的) system.( Ferreira解释说,这是由于嗅觉系统的结构。)”
根据第五段中“L’Oréal, a French multinational personal care company, has partnered with neurotechnology company Emotiv to create a scent choice “experience”. (法国跨国个人护理公司欧莱雅与神经技术公司Emotiv合作,创造了一种气味选择‘体验’。2023年,某些商店的购物者使用一种设备来发现哪些气味吸引了他们。到目前为止的结果显示,使用该设备的客户中有95%找到了合适的香水。法国奢侈时尚和香水品牌纪梵希的另一款香水多年来一直是畅销品,其中包括一种经过生物识别研究选择的特殊物质。)”可知,提到了香水品牌是为了展示神经技术的应用。故选A项。
根据最后一段中Katie Puckrik所说“Leave the magic to the artists. Why do we need a computer to tell us what our nose already knows? Finding a new favorite scent by chance is a rare moment of grace we should allow ourselves.(把神奇留给艺术家吧。为什么我们需要电脑来告诉我们鼻子已经知道的东西?偶然发现一种新的喜欢的气味是我们应该允许自己享受的难得的优雅时刻。)”可知,Katie Puckrik对这项新技术的态度是消极的。故选D项。

40.根据上文“How do you tell your friends they have breath that would kill the devil? Here’s an easy, roundabout way: pop a piece of gum into your own mouth and then offer one to your friend. (你怎么告诉你的朋友他们有能杀死魔鬼的口气?这里有一个简单而迂回的方法:把一块口香糖塞进自己的嘴里,然后给你的朋友一块。)”可知,可以委婉的告诉朋友有口气,与D项“This way, you won’t be saying anything outright. (这样,你就不会直言不讳。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选D项。

67.阅读下列材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Then I approached Boomerang. It was pacing around the yard, its eyes darting around an xiously. I knelt down and tried to calm it by petting its head and speaking softly. Its tail wagged slightly in response, but its barks continued. I knew that it was missing Leo deeply and the TV noise wasn't enough to distract it.
Suddenly, its name reminded me how it played with Leo .I remembered the joy on both their faces as they played fetch together, Bomerang always returning the ball with a triumphant bark. A plan formed in my mind. I quickly ran into my house and grabbed a ball. I threw it into the yard and called Boomerang's name. It immediately stopped barking and sprinted towards the ball, bringing it back to me with a happy bark.
