It is said that people now love keeping flat-faced (扁脸的) dogs like French bulldogs as pets, because they are so cute. Some people call these dogs “lazy” because they get sleepy more easily than other dogs during the day. However, according to a recent study, these cute dogs are having a hard time.
Scientists watched 92 family dogs of different kinds while they were sleeping. During the study, the dogs spent about three hours with their owners in the sleep lab. With nothing special to do, the dogs soon fell asleep. At that time, the scientists recorded the dogs’ brain activities with an EEG (脑电图).
The study found that the flat-faced dogs slept more than the other kinds. This is because they don’t get enough sleep at night. Scientists explained that, because of their special head structure, these flat-faced dogs usually have sleep apnea (睡眠呼吸暂停症). During their sleep, they can’t get enough air and may find it difficult to breathe, which makes them repeatedly wake up.
Some French bulldogs may sleep while holding a toy ball in their mouths. Owners may think this is funny. But they’re actually doing it to keep their airways (呼吸道) open so they can breathe more easily.
This, however, is only one of the health problems dogs have because of breeding (培育). According to the website Pet Helpful, a lot of pet dogs are bred based on what people like, such as shorter legs, heavier bodies and larger ears. There is no doubt that bulldog is a victim of it.
Lots of pet lovers are calling for people to respect animals as they are. Breeders must take the health of pets seriously instead of just for cuteness. After all, we are not supposed to build our fun on others’ suffering.

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their pets are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their pets outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your pets warm and safe.
Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of water.
If dogs and cats are left alone outside, they can be very smart in searching for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks (雪堆) or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with a shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pets’ water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that the water bowl has frozen and their pets can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may include something unhealthy for them.

DOGTV is a television channel (频道) for dogs. It first appeared in America in 2012. Now, it is available in 14 countries, including China, Australia, France, the UK, etc.
Believe it or not, DOGTV didn’t start as a TV channel for dogs. The idea for Pet TV came from Ron Levi. To let his cat Charlie have fun while he was out, Ron did some research and began to work with scientists and pet experts to bring his idea to life. To their surprise, dogs showed more interest in different kinds of programs than cats. Pet TV finally became DOGTV.

The programs are different from time to time during the day. In the morning, programs are to get dogs out of bed. In the middle of the day, programs are to make dogs become relaxed while they are home alone. Dogs are scared of things like cars or loud noises. So DOGTV has special programs with pictures and sounds to help them get used to those things. The channel even has educational programs on health and training.
DOGTV creates proper shows for dogs’ seeing and hearing. Dogs are color-blind (色盲).They can only see blue and yellow, and they can’t see red or green. So the DOGTV shows might sound and look a little different to people’s ears and eyes. But don’t worry. DOGTV has programs for pet owners, too.

Americans love pets. Many pet owners treat their pets as a part of the family. They treat their pets as their children—sometimes even better.
In America, there are more families with pets than those with children. 43 percent of U.S. homes have pets. Some of the pets are overseas animals, such as monkeys, snakes, butterflies and even wolves. Those animals come from other countries, especially China, Thailand, South Africa and so on. More common pets include fish, mice and birds. However, their favorites are cats and dogs. They sometimes have strong feelings about whether dogs or cats make better pets. “Dog people” and “cat people” often have friendly arguments about that.
People can get many benefits from pets. Pets stay with people, make people happy and help people get rid of loneliness. Therefore, most of Americans like pets. They think pets should be treated well. At least seventy-five animal welfare (福利) organizations have been set up in America. They provide care and good services for homeless animals. Some pets can help people live a better life. For example, researchers have discovered that getting on with animals can help lower a person’s blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from strange visitors. Cats can play games with the children. Some kinds of pets can provide love for their owners. In fact, to keep a pet can help a young couple have the responsibility to raise children. Pets are as basic to U.S. culture as hot dogs or apple pies. To Americans, pets are not just property (财产), but a part of the family.

Shenzhen rescued and captured nearly 10,000 dogs last year. 1,119 of them have been adopted(收养)by people after receiving treatment at the city’s dog rescue centres, according to a report.
Shenzhen has a total of four dog rescue centres, one of which is the Longgang Dog Rescue Centre in Honghualing Ecological Park. As the newest one, the centre was put into use in July 2020. It covers nearly 800 square metres and can accommodate(容纳)more than 4,000 dogs a year.
According to the director of the centre, Liu Xiongguang, the centre is divided into eight areas — the office, reception, isolation(隔离), living, adoption, storehouse, activity and science popularization areas.
The centre aims to accommodate, treat, help with the adoption of, and inform the public about the homeless or captured dogs in Longgang. If the dog owner is found within seven days, the centre will tell him or her to get back the pet, or the centre will adopt it.
The first place the dogs set foot in is the reception area, where workers at the centre will take photos of them and record them on the list. The dogs with diseases will be isolated and other dogs will remain in the room to wait for the next step. After careful watching, the dogs are moved to the living area. Every dog enjoys a single room there. The workers will feed them and play with them in the activity area.

Otters (水獭) are cute water animals. These days, keeping otters as pets is getting popular. In Japan, some “otter cafés (咖啡馆)” are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets.
However, these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage (损害) that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing many threats—they have long been hunted for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters.
In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers. When they are kept as pets by humans, they do not live full and natural lives.
Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners’ bathtubs (浴缸) or pools are nowhere near as large as the bodies of water in the wild.
On the other hand, otters simply don’t make good pets. They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noises and even attack (攻击) people. If a person is hurt by an otter, he or she needs to go to hospital at once.
So, we should stop the otter pet trade and never share photos and videos about them online.

I recently visited my friend Lydia and saw her new puppy. It was really cute. Later that day, as I helped Skyler climb the stairs, I thought about how you didn’t consider this level of extra (额外的) care when you brought home a furry (毛茸茸的) new family member.
When we got Skyler, my husband and I had only been married for a few years. She was only one month old. She was house-trained in no time. We took her on hikes, and we were amazed by her energy. If we took off running toward the end of a field, she would have already crossed the finish line before we had even made it halfway. On walks, whenever we turned the corner onto our street, she pulled hard on her leash (狗链) to race toward home. She had made us laugh endlessly and had comforted me countless times.
But it is hard. It is sad to see this once-strong dog have a difficult time walking up the front steps. Now, she is 14 years old. Over the past few years, we have had to give up on taking certain family trips because we wouldn’t have been able to take good care of Skyler. My husband spends hours each week making special food for her that helps to control her heart problems. And I always have to sit in the back of the car whenever she travels with us because Skyler needs help getting comfortable, even though I may get carsick as a result.
Though I sometimes complain (抱怨) about old Skyler, I know she has taught me about love. Dogs give us unconditional love. ____________

The Ling family did not think they were going home with a pet that day. Annie wanted to visit the animal shelter (避难所). She wanted to see the cats and dogs. She had wanted a pet for years. Her parents were waiting for the girls to be old enough. Annie was seven. Her sister Lily was only three. Lily was still learning how to act around animals. She had a lot of energy!
Annie and Lily were excited to see the animals. A shelter volunteer gave the Ling family a tour. The volunteer talked about why animals came to the shelter. Some were found by the road. Others were dropped off by families who could not care for them.
Finally, the Ling family got to see the animals: There was a cat section and a dog section. They were all so cute! Some of the animals looked scared. This made Annie sad. The volunteer explained that animals need time to get used to a new place. She assured (向……保证) Annie that all the people caring for these animals were kind.
The Ling family walked through the dog section. They started talking. A dog just felt like the right choice. Annie’s mom could not take her eyes of fan older black dog with kind eyes. Annie’s dad was interested in a large, energetic dog. Annie had found her own favorite. He was a young puppy. He was brown with spots. He had been found near the railway with six other puppies (小狗). Annie could not take her eyes off this dog. She thought he had the cutest face in the world.
Annie pleaded (恳求) with her parents. They did not want to make a quick decision. But they could see in Annie’s eyes that she had found her companion (伴侣). It’s impossible for my children to read this, which is lucky for me, because it would give them support for the argument (争论) “Can we get a dog or a cat?” Because the research suggests that having one is good for children.
A study published in JAMA Pediatrics shows that children who had a dog in their first year of life were 13% less likely to develop asthma (哮喘) by the time they were six than those from dog-free families. It is believed that children are more likely to develop allergies (过敏) if they grow up in super-clean environments. This study shows other reasons that increase the risk of asthma, but can still show only an association (联系).
It is reported that 46% of families in the UK have pets, with dogs and then cats the most common animals. The evidence (证据) which shows the advantages of having cats is not always the same, but some research still shows that pets make children healthier. A study of 397 Finnish babies in 2012 found that, during their first year of life, those whose parents had dogs or cats had fewer colds than those from homes without pets. Dogs offered more protection than cats. The researchers think this is because they brought in more dirt from outside to cause the babies’ immune systems (免疫系统) to work well.
The research also shows that having a pet may make children feel more popular and be more understanding. Older studies found that pets make family members spend more time together and have more “entertainment” they offered as well.
Pets can also help children to learn about responsibility (责任), brush the fur, clean the place they sleep, feed them, take more exercise (if you get a dog) and deal with loss—who can forget when their family pet got a car accident?
In a word, keeping pets is really good for improving children’s health and their qualities. However, I still won’t allow my children to keep a pet at home. After all, both dogs and cats poop (大便) at home, and they can carry worms or other parasites. Also, it seems that few children look after the animals they repeatedly asked their parents for.
72.According to some research, having a pet makes children healthier because ________.
A.they aren’t likely to develop asthma B.they live in a super-clean environment
C.pets can protect them from danger D.dirt makes them guard against the disease better
73.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.There is no good reason for having pets. B.Having pets has its disadvantages.
C.Children share the care of pets with parents. D.Pets may bring diseases to children.
74.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Why can pets make your children healthier? B.Will having a pet make your children healthier?
C.How does having a pet reduce the risk of disease? D.Is keeping a pet really good for your children?
75.What best shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
During the winter holiday, my family planned a vacation, but what about my dog? A friend said I could find a pet sitter (宠物托管师). So I got interested in this job. And soon I find Cao Ting, a pet sitter, on pet care websites (网站) and social media, like Xiaohongshu and Douyin. We had a conversation on WeChat.
What do pet sitters need to do?
I need to feed pets and play with them. I also do other things if pet owners ask me to, such as bathing the pets and cutting their nails (指甲) .To learn professional pet care skills, I need to do pet care training talk with other pet sitters and get experience through practice.
What interesting experiences do pet sitters have?
I once cared for a dog. It was very sensitive (敏感的) to sounds. It would look around whenever someone visited, making sure everything was OK. This made me realize that each pet has its own character. I learned to spend more time with them and get to know their quirks (怪癖) and habits. This would make them feel safe and happy.
How do pet sitters make sure the pet owners’ homes are safe when they take care of pets there?
When pet sitters come to take care of pets at the pet owners’ homes the owners may worry about keeping the house safe. So I always ask pet owners to put away their valuable things and maybe even set up cameras for safety. This way, we can make sure their places are safe, and if anything goes missing, we’ll have proof (证据)to help deal with the problem.
What do you think of the future of being a pet sitter?
Right now, pet sitters don’t always makes table (稳定的) money. You need to find customers. But I feel good about this job’s future. People are starting to care more about their pets’ health and happiness.

①“Mom, I want a cat,” or “Mom I want a dog,” or “Mom, I want a…,” are common words that parents may hear from their children more than once. However, there are many arguments for and against children owning pets.
②The first argument that supports pet ownership by children is that they are good company. When children come home from school, pets are always there to greet them. They love children and always love to play. As a result, children won’t be lonely. They will also help to keep children active as they will need to be walked and played with every day.
③ ▲ Pets need to be looked after and be taken care of every day. Children will learn different skills that they can use later in life. For example, washing and feeding pets are important skills to learn. Learning these responsibilities will make sure that children will be able to look after themselves, and possibly their children one day.
④On the other hand, some pets can be dangerous. Some dogs, for example, may hurt others, and children may become afraid of animals as a result of this happening to them. Cats also look very soft, but they do have very sharp claws (爪子). If they are treated in the wrong way, cats can use their claws to scratch.
⑤Besides, pets require a great deal of care. Many pets need showers, exercise and so on. As a result of this, children may neglect their studies because they are too busy worrying about their pet and its health.
⑥ A further argument against pet ownership is that pets are costly; buying food and caring them is expensive. Finally, the cost of owning one falls on parents, and as a result, children don’t fully understand the responsibility of having one.
⑦ In short, there are many arguments for and against pet ownership. Pets help to keep children company, fit, and they also help them to learn new responsibilities. However, pets can be dangerous, they require a lot of care, and they cost a lot of money to be taken care of properly.
86.Which of the following sentences can be put into ▲ in paragraph 3?
A.Some animals are friendly to children.
B.So their children can look after more people at school.
C.All in all, having a pet has a good influence on children.
D.Secondly, owning a pet encourages children to learn new responsibilities.
87.The underlined word “neglect” in paragraph 5 means ________.
A.put an effort in B.pay little attention to C.have no influence on D.show great interest in
88.Why are some people against owning a pet?
A.Because children can learn some life skills.
B.Because children love to play with pets happily.
C.Because children will have a poorer sense of responsibility.
D.Because they care about children’s safety, schoolwork and the cost.
89.What’s the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
90.What’s the text mainly about?
A.How to take good care of a pet. B.The problems of owning a pet.

People now keep flat-faced dogs such as French bulldogs as pets because they are cute. Some people call these dogs “lazy” because they get sleepier more easily than other dogs during the day. However, these cute dogs are having a hard tıme, according to a recent study.
Scientists at Eotvos Lorand University in Hungary watched 92 family dogs of different types while they were sleeping.
During the study, the dogs spent about three hours with their owners in the sleep lab. With nothing special to do, the dogs soon fell asleep. At that time, the scientists recorded the dogs’ brain activities by an electroencephalogram (EEG, 脑电图), which doesn’t hurt the dogs.
The study found that the flat-faced dogs slept more than the other kinds. This may be because they don’t get enough sleep at night. The scientists explained that this is due to sleep apnea (睡眠呼吸暂停症), which only happens in French bulldogs.
During their sleep, they can’t get enough air and may find it difficult to breathe, which makes them constantly wake up.
Some French bulldogs may sleep while holding a toy ball in their mouths. Owners may think this is funny. But they’re actually doing it to keep their airways (呼吸道) open so they can breathe more easily.
This, however, is only one of the health problems dogs have because of breeding (培育). According to the website Pet Helpful, a lot of pet dogs are bred based on what people like, such as shorter legs, heavier bodies, and larger ears. Bulldogs are one of the victims.
Lots of pet lovers are calling for people to respect dogs as they are. Breeders must take the health of their dogs seriously instead of just for cuteness, Australian vet Karen Hedberg told ABC News.
91.What problems do flat-faced dogs have?
A.They are too energetic at night.
B.They are lazy and don’t work during the day.
C.They have serious sleep problems.
D.They are no longer popular on the market.
92.What do we know about the experiment?
A.It studied 92 French bulldogs.
B.It recorded dogs’ sleeping with an EEG.
C.Dogs were put into the lab all alone.
D.Dogs couldn’t fall asleep in the lab.
93.Why do some flat-faced dogs hold a toy ball in their mouths during sleep?
A.To keep them partly awake. B.To express their love for the toy ball.
C.To please their owners. D.To help them breathe better.
94.Karen Hedberg called on breeders to ________.
A.stop breeding flat-faced dogs B.breed more cute types of dogs
C.put pets’ health first when breeding D.respect pet owners’ choices
95.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.many cute animals may have serious health problems
B.flat-faced dogs face health problems because of breeding choices
C.dog owners do not understand their pets clearly
D.people are choosing pets in a more scientific way
