Nowadays, people from all over the world are trying to solve the environmental problems and protect the environment.
Energy Protection. The plastic bottles and bags are used easily, but they do harm to the environment. Recently, new public drinking water service is highly popular in Britain. There have been more than 8,000 liters (升) of water at the bus stations, shopping centers, museums, and other public places across the capital so far. To cut plastic waste, the government encourages the British to drink the water on the street rather than buy bottled water.
Ocean Protection. “When scientists found a four-meter-long whale with some plastic bottles in its stomach, every one of them felt sad,” Kong, a teacher from Duke Kunshan University, said. And there are at last 8 million tons of plastic going to the ocean each year. If it continues, there will be more plastic than the fish in the ocean by 2050. So people begin to collect litter in the ocean now.
Air protection. Nowadays, China begins to use the biofuel (生物燃料), the biofuel is greener than the traditional fuel. Using the biofuel has many advantages. It comes from renewable materials. And it’s clean and green so it can’t cause air pollution. But it’s expensive.

As 60-year-old Li Yunli remembers, the water in Dianchi Lake in Kunming, Yunnan, was so clean that local people could drink from it directly when she was a child.
But People greatly polluted the lake in the 1980s. Local people avoided it, even though they had once depended on its fish for their living. Many chose to change jobs and go else where to make a living, but not Li. Instead, she set up her mind to clean the lake.
She has been cleaning the lake for 36 years now. And her hard work made her one of China’s 100 model environmental protection volunteers in 2022. In 1987, the local government started a volunteer program to deal with the growing number of water hyacinths (水葫芦). Li attended it at once. Next year, she built an all-woman salvage (打捞) team to clean the lake. She was the leader of the team.
Since then, she and her team often started work at 7 a.m. The hardest period runs from June to August. The water hyacinths grow fastest. During this period, the wind blows plants and litter in many different directions and rain sometimes makes the work harder.
“I grew up near Dianchi. I’m cleaning it not only for the lake, but also for myself and for future people,” she said. “As long as I work hard to take the lead in the clean-up, more people will join us to protect Dianchi, and the lake will return to its best condition. People can drink it directly again.” she said.
There have been good changes to the lake thanks to the team’s work and also to the increasing attention from the local government.
36. When did Li Yunli begin to clean the lake?
A. At the age of 24. B. At the age of 35.

38. What does the underlined word “attended” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. 陪同 B. 参加 C. 照料 D. 注意
39. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about why the hardest time for the team is from June to August?
A. Because there is too much rain.
B. Because there is too much wind.
C. Because the weather is too hot.
D. Because the water hyacinths grow fastest.
40. The passage mainly talk about _________.
A. how to protect Dianchi
B. an all-woman salvage team in Dianchi
C. the changing situations of the water in Dianchi
D. the efforts made by Li Yunli and her team for the polluted Danchi

Now we can see more and more electric cars running on the street. But you’ll probably be as surprised as I was to find that electric cars aren’t a 21st-century invention. Almost two centuries ago, in 1828, a Hungarian engineer named Nyos Jedlik invented the first electric motor to power a small model car. And he wasn’t the only one with an interest in that sort of technology. In 1834, blacksmith (铁匠) Thomas Davenport created a similar device (设备) that could be driven at short distances using an electric track. It was just like streetcars later on! And over in the Netherlands, university professor Sibrandus Stratingh built a tiny electric car powered with non-rechargeable (不可充电的) batteries. But these primary batteries could be used only once, so people needed too many batteries to run the motor over long distances at such low speeds. It wasn’t until 1859 when French physicist Gaston Plante invented the lead acid battery that changed the electric engine game for good. Many countries began producing electric three-wheeled cars until the US made a huge breakthrough (突破). In 1891, they created the first electric vehicle. It was a 6-passenger wagon that could go up to 14 miles per hour. After that the electric car market grew stronger. In the late 1890s, electric-powered taxis filled the streets of London. By the early 1900s, almost one-third of cars in the US were electric-powered. But that wasn’t going to last long. What happened to the electric cars by the late 1920s? Let’s go on tomorrow.
41. Who invented the first electric motor?
A. Gaston Plante. B. Sibrandus Stratingh.
C. Thomas Davenport. D. Nyos Jedlik.
42. Put the following events in the correct order ________.
①a small model car powered by the first electric motor
②electric-powered taxis in London
③6-passenger electric wagon
④electric-powered cars in US
A. ①②③④ B. ①③②④
C. ①④③② D. ①④②③
43. Why wasn’t the electric car put into use until 1859?
A. Because nobody was interested in it.
B. Because they were model cars.
C. Because the batteries were non-rechargeable.
D. Because there were no electric tracks.
44. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The electric motor was invented in the 19th century.
B. The high speed of the electric car could reach 15 miles.
C. You could take an electric taxi in London in 1850.
D. There were only electric cars in US in the early 1960s.
45. Where can you probably see the passage?
A. A science newspaper. B. A travel guidebook.
C. A health website. D. An art magazine.
