Unit 1 A New Start 单元话题阅读理解练习 (23-24高一上·山东济宁·阶段练习)It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that the summer vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous, anxious or a little frightened on the first day of school because of all the new things; new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school. Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often read classroom rules and school rules to you so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention. You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it’s a great day to make new friends, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t know. In this way, you’ll make a good first impression on your new partners. Seeing friends you haven’t seen for some time can make the first day a good one. You can make the day special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll need. But make sure that you organize them in advance in case you don’t have time in the morning. 1.What do the underlined words “kick off” in the second paragraph probably mean? A.Find. B.Study. C.Start. D.Teach. 2.What will you do on the first day of school according to the passage? A.Share a story. B.Revise new lessons. C.Argue with new friends. D.Learn about the school rules. 3.According to the passage, if you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, how will you feel? A.Happy. B.Sad. C.Nervous. D.Worried. 4.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A.What to know about a new school. B.How to spend your first day of school. C.What to do on your first day of school. D.How to prepare for the first day of a new school. (23-24高一上·河北保定·期中)After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers, I became a teacher at a one-room country school in Aldborough Township. That first day of school as a 19-year-old female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student; it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the “new teacher.” I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16. There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet — no outdoor facilities for us! The heat in the building was a wood-burning furnace (火炉) down in the basement. Tending the furnace was one of my responsibilities. Luckily, I knew a bit about starting a fire, so the school didn’t burn down. What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason. I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally, I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem. Needless to say, I was very unpopular with that father from then on, but the children came to school much more regularly! In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning, as well as with putting on coats and hats. If someone’s lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food. We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning. Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing, we learned how to get along with each other. I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects. I’d like to believe some students will have an influence on the world that will last long after I am gone. 5.Why did the author feel her first day as a teacher frightening? A.So many students were in class. B.The situations were quite different. C.No outdoor facilities were provided. D.The students were curious about her. 6.What do we know about the school? A.It was poorly equipped. B.The playground was large. C.It was once damaged by a fire. D.The students were of similar age. 7.What was a headache for the author? A.A Dutch family hated her. B.The students preferred farm work. C.The education officer offered little help. D.Some parents ignored children’s education. 8.What can be inferred from Paragraph 5? A.They cared about each other. B.They had an influence on the world. C.They laughed away bad times. D.They did well in almost every subject. (22-23高一上·陕西咸阳·阶段练习)Eddie, Aged 16 Being yourself is one important thing you have to remember when going to senior high school. I don’t know what your junior high school was like, but senior high school teachers will not care about such things as how much homework you have already finished in one night. It means that you had better learn to manage your time wisely. Frank, Aged 16 I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You’ll probably love it. I know I did. You should join some clubs where you can meet people with the same interests. And taking part in some outdoor activities will also help to make your senior high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck! Bill, Aged 15 When I began senior high school I was really nervous, especially since I had been taught at home all through junior high school. I think the best advice is that you should relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it. James, Aged 16 I have to tell you the truth that the first day of my senior high school is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it soon. Don’t be afraid of anyone. Just take it easy. It really helps if you make some friends and stay with them. After the first week, you’ll feel better. Don’t worry. 9.According to Frank, how can you make your senior high school life enjoyable? A.By making many friends. B.By talking with your teachers. C.By joining clubs and taking part in activities. D.By meeting people with the different interests. 10.How did Bill feel on his first day of senior high school? A.Nervous. B.Bored. C.Easy. D.Excited. 11.Who mentioned the importance of friends? A.Eddie. B.Frank. C.Bill. D.James. (23-24高一上·江苏淮安·开学考试)Here come 4 most popular clubs in our school! (23-24高一上·云南·阶段练习)It was an oral English class and in front of us was standing our teacher Linda, who was a university student from the US. Somehow we came to the point whether any of us could sing an English pop in front of the class. You know, maybe three or more out of ten Chinese students are shy in class. As a result, there was silence in class for quite a while, which made everybody feel rather embarrassed, including the teacher. I was a shy boy. However, just at that moment, a great idea struck me suddenly. “Seize the opportunity! Seize the opportunity! Yes, there couldn’t be a better opportunity,” I said to myself. “Why not seize it? Why should I have always to be the guy regretting missing the opportunity just because of shyness?” Yes, maybe I should have a try. So I raised my hand. And I remember that it took me quite a while to think what the song’s name was. Though I sang no more than five sentences because of forgetting the lyrics (歌词), their clapping hands told me that I did the job well. Later, I got a gift and I was really happy. I think that is one of the most unforgettable moments in my life. (23-24高一上·安徽·阶段练习)Phones, tablets and smart watches will be mostly banned (禁止) from classrooms in the Netherlands from Jan 1, 2024, Sky News reported. The move is meant to limit distractions from social media, messaging and other sites. Devices will only be allowed if they are needed for the lesson, for medical reasons, or for people with disabilities. “Scientific research showed that mobile phones are a disturbance (打扰). We need to protect students against this,” said Robbert Dijkgraaf, Minister of Education, Culture and Science of the Netherlands. “Students need to be able to concentrate and need to be given the opportunity to study well.” Dijkgraaf noted that schools could manage the implementation of the ban themselves. However, he added that laws would follow if the results are not good enough. The United Nations also warned of the risks of smartphones in schools, the BBC reported. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said that too much mobile phone use was linked to reduced educational performance. And high levels of screen time have a bad effect on children’s mind, noted The Guardian. UNESCO said its call for a smartphone ban sent a clear message that all digital technology including artificial intelligence should always be less important than a human-centered vision of education and can never replace face-to-face interaction with teachers. Based on its analysis of 200 education systems around the world, UNESCO estimate one in four countries and regions had laws or policies banning phones in schools. Besides the Netherlands, France introduced its policy in 2018, and Finland had a similar decision in June. In 2021, the Ministry of Education in China banned mobile phones, tablets, and other digital devices in the classroom, Xinhua reported. According to the policy, if such devices are brought to school, then they should be stored together in the same place. Meanwhile, the use of the devices for teaching purposes should not be over 30 percent of the total teaching time. “Our school has strict rules to ban phones in class. Students who break the rules may lose their merit student qualification or admissions eligibility (保送) for college,” Dai Ting, a 17-year-old student from Chengdu, told Teens. 22.Which of the following is true according to the text? I’d asked the students to imagine they were working at the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. After the tournament ended, a supervisor offered them the lightly used tennis balls hit during the event by stars like Serena Williams and Roger Federer. Their job was to sell the balls for a profit. “I had a couple of good ideas at first,” Nick said. “I could sell them as dog toys or to hospitals that could put them on the bottom of walker frames to keep them from slipping.” Then he struggled to think of more options and decided that was the best he could do. Most people believe that good ideas come quickly or not at all — but it turns out that’s not the case. Researchers call this “the creative cliff illusion (错觉)”, the sense that we’re unlikely to get good ideas if they don’t appear the minute we start thinking. The truth, though, is that the best ideas often come later. Your first ideas tend to reflect common wisdom, and thinking like everyone else isn’t a recipe for creativity. The solution is to persist, even though persevering feels hard. If you continue working, more interesting and original ideas will emerge. I explained this to the class, and we spent another 10 minutes thinking together. Nick realized that he could sell the balls using two different strategies: selling a small portion for a lot of money as signed souvenirs to tennis fanatics and the rest at a discount to tennis schools serving under privileged kids. Finally, I, together with my students drew a conclusion after discussion: don’t assume your first ideas are always your best ones but do keep brainstorming after you think you’re out of new ideas. It’s worth spending 10-15 minutes longer on a task, because the best ideas are likely just around the corner. 26.What was the challenge Nick was facing at first? A.Thinking of a solution to a problem. B.Working at the tennis tournament. C.Selling dog toys as many as possible. D.Making a profit by selling balls. 27.What can be inferred about Nick’s original idea? A.The teacher was satisfied with his idea. B.Nick desired for a better solution. C.It was based on personal experience. D.Nick solved the hospital’s problems. 28.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “assume” in the last paragraph? A.Impress. B.Attract. C.Gain. D.Suppose. 29.What does the author intend to convey? A.Working in an excellent team. B.Playing to your strengths. C.Keeping thinking continuously. D.Learning the latest theories. (23-24高一上·云南昆明·期中)After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly profit you. Your old friends may have left you after entering high school. And it means you need to meet new people. Joining a club allows you to talk with others and find those who have similar interests as you. Based on my experience, I have met some of my best friends from club activities, which opened up many new doors for me. Another really nice thing about joining a club is that it looks really good on college applications. Trying new things is something that looks really good on any application. Outgoing is considered a very good quality which shows that you are determined and ready to put yourself out there and best of all try new things. Furthermore, it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews. Besides, joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. Most teens go to schools, then go back home and spend the rest of the day in front of a screen. Teens are also very likely to fall into the wrong crowd, which could lead to some bad results. Clubs are good places to spend time with good people to fall back on. The most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefits ( 益 处 ) it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, making the most of time, and being organized are those you will meet every single day of your life, but you can learn all of them in clubs. So if you haven’t joined a school club yet, you know what you should do now. 30.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “profit”in paragraph 1? A.Cheer up. B.Go against. C.Make use of. D.Be good for. 31.What do colleges think highly of according to the text? A.The number of clubs you have joined. B.The strong relationships you have built. C.The bright personality you have developed. D.The similar interests you share with other students. 32.What is the best title for the text? A.Why Should You Join a Club? B.What Club Should You Join? C.How Can You Join a Club You Like? D.Should You Join a Second Club? 33.In which section of a magazine may this text appear? A.Health. B.School life. C.Culture. Larson。)” 根据第六段中“UNESCO said its call for a  smartphone ban sent a clear message that all digital technology  including artificial intelligence should always be less important than a  human-centered vision of education and can never replace face-to-face  interaction with teachers.(联合国教科文组织表示,禁止智能手机的呼吁传达了一个明确的信息,即包括人工智能在内的所有数字技术都不应该比以人为本的教育理念重要,也永远不能取代与教师面对面的交流)”可知,任何人工智能都不能代替与老师的交流。 根据划线词下文“However, he added that laws would follow if the results are not good enough.(然而,他补充说,如果结果不够好,将会采取法律措施)”可知,如果禁令实施的结果不够好将会采取法律措施,故此处指“学校可以自己管理禁令的实施”,划线词implementation与carrying out“实施,执行”同义,bringing out“阐明,使显露”、making out“搞清楚,弄明白”以及putting out“扑灭”都无法与“the ban”搭配。故选A。 24. 根据全文内容可知,文章最后一段提到了一名学生说的话“Our school has strict rules to ban phones in class. Students who break the rules may lose their merit student qualification or admissions eligibility (保送) for college(我们学校有严格的规定,禁止在课堂上使用手机。 根据全文内容,结合第一段“Phones, tablets and smart watches will be mostly banned (禁止) from classrooms in the Netherlands from Jan 1, 2024, Sky News reported.(据天空新闻报道,从2024年1月1日起,荷兰的教室将禁止使用手机、平板电脑和智能手表)”可知,文章主要讲述了荷兰从2024年1月1日起禁止电子产品进入教室。 根据第二段中“I’d asked the students to imagine they were working at the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. After the tournament ended, a supervisor offered them the lightly used tennis balls hit during the event by stars like Serena Williams and Roger Federer. Their job was to sell the balls for a profit. 故选A项。 27. 根据第三段中“I had a couple of good ideas at first (一开始我有几个好主意)”和“Then he struggled to think of more options and decided that was the best he could do. 根据画线词的下文“your first ideas are always your best ones (你的第一批想法总是你最好的)”和“but do keep brainstorming after you think you’re out of new ideas (但在你觉得你没有新想法后,要继续进行头脑风暴)”可知,此处语义有转折,告诫要一直思考新想法,由此推知,不要做的事情是以为第一批想法最好就放弃思考。 根据第五段中“The truth, though, is that the best ideas often come later. (然而,事实是,最好的想法往往是后来才出现的)”和最后一段中“It’s worth spending 10-15 minutes longer on a task, because the best ideas are likely just around the corner. 根据划线词上文“After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one.(进入高中后,你会发现学校里有很多俱乐部。你可能觉得自己太忙了,没时间参加)”以及“But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly”可知but表示转折,说明参加俱乐部是有好处的。 根据第三段“Outgoing is considered a very good quality which shows that you are determined and ready to put yourself out there and best of all try new things. Furthermore, it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews.(外向被认为是一种很好的品质,这表明你有决心,准备好把自己放在那里,最好的是尝试新事物。 根据第一段“After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly profit you.(进入高中后,你会发现学校里有很多俱乐部。 故选A。 33. 根据第一段“After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly profit you.(进入高中后,你会发现学校里有很多俱乐部。
