A new study finds city trees grow faster but die younger than trees in rural forestry. As we all know, the earth would be freezing or burning hot without carbon dioxide. However, carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps energy from the sun as heat. That makes temperatures near the ground rise. Human activities, especially the widespread burning of fossil fuels, have been sending extra greenhouse gases in to the air. This has led to a rise in average temperatures across the globe. Studies had shown forests readily absorb carbon dioxide, but there hadn’t been much data on whether city trees grow, die and absorb carbon dioxide at the same rate as forest trees do. So some researchers decided to find out. To figure out how quicky trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters (the width of their trunks) between 2005 and 2014. A tree’s diameter increases as it grows, just as a person’s waist size increases as they gain weight. The research has shown about half the weight of a tree is carbon, while most of the rest is water. Over the nine years’ tracking, the researchers found city trees absorbed four times as much carbon dioxide from the air as forest trees. However, they were twice as likely to die. So over the lifetime of each type of tree, forest trees actually absorbed more carbon dioxide. City trees grew faster because they have less competition for light from their neighbors. In a forest, trees tend to grow close together, shading their neighbors. Street trees also benefit from higher levels of nitrogen (氮) in rainwater. Nitrogen helps plants grow. Waste gases from gas-burning cars also contain nitrogen, thus enriching city air with nitrogen. Later, rainwater may wash much of it to the ground. Some street trees may also have better access to water than trees in the country because the underground water pipes can leak. 4. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The greenhouse gas does harm to the earth. B. Carbon dioxide plays apart in keeping the earth’s temperature. C. Carbon dioxide can heat the earth. D. Only human act iii es make the temperature rise. 5. What information can a tree diameter tell? A. How a tree is transplanted. B. How long a tree is. C. How old a tree is. D. How much water a tree contains. 6. How do city trees differ from forest trees of the same type over the lifetime in the research? A. They could live twice longer than forest trees. B. They took in less carbon dioxide than forest trees. C. They could absorb more carbon dioxide than forest trees. D. They weighed heavier than forest trees. 7. What advantage do city trees have? A. They have no competition. B. They grow closer together. C. They get more nutrition like nitrogen. D. They have better access to rainwater. C Do you get nervous thinking about geometry, equations (方程式) or a coming math test? If your answer is “yes”, you are far from alone. Math anxiety has become a common psychological (心理的) condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb. 15. Math anxiety—a negative emotional reaction to the core subject—causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. In ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when meeting with a math problem, ranging from mild tension to strong fear. Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid every situation involving numbers, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to this subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian. Reassurance (慰藉) comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren’t destined (注定的) to be bad at math. “If a child has math anxiety, don’t assume that they’re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math and there are ways to improve math achievement,” Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press. “Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged.” Also, there are ways to manage your stress related to math. If you’re feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist in the US told the BBC. “Just because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail.” A little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. Just like many people get stage fright before delivering a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate, according to Ian Lyons, a psychologist at Georgetown University in the US. 8. What does the author focus on in Paragraphs 2 and 3? A. Analyzing causes. B. Proving examples. C. Explaining influences. D. Drawing comparisons. 9. What message do Daniel Ansari’s words convey in Paragraph 4? A. Math anxiety is what leads to students’ failure. B Math anxiety is what nearly everyone will face. C. Math anxiety doesn’t necessarily mean poor math. D. Math anxiety doesn’t necessarily allow improvement space. 10. How should you deal with the stress related to math according to the article? A. Learn to understand your feelings. B. Turn to cognitive experts for help. C. Take all nervous energy as a challenge. D. Practice more before taking math exams. 11. What is the best title for the passage? A. What is anxiety? B. Worried by numbers C. How to avoid studying math? D. Math test -a nightmare for all D Over 85% of adults in the United States report spending more time reading news on their mobile devices than on traditional print media. This isn’t that surprising, considering how easily accessible news stories are on our smartphones, as well as the higher level of exposure to news, in general, by means of social media. But we don’t just consume news on our phones. Smartphones are used to study, read books, and look up new information. But a recent study raises concerns about the tendency of a smartphone version of page-turning. The findings suggest that reading on electronic devices actually reduces our comprehension For this study, researchers made groups of participants (参加者) either read on a smartphone or a physical printed text. After participants finished reading, they answered ten comprehension questions. The results showed that participants who read the printed version of the text answered more comprehension questions correctly, but brain activity increased regardless of what medium the individuals read from. Participants who read the printed text also sighed more often compared to those who read from a smartphone. While these findings suggest that reading on a smartphone actually lowers reading comprehension when compared to reading on paper, it’s important to keep in mind that the study’s sample size was only 34 participants. But past research has made similar claims. One study found that even just having a smartphone within reach can significantly reduce cognitive (认知的) ability. Smartphone usage has also been linked to sleep disruption and imbalances in brain chemistry. “We generally praise the benefits of technology, but often ignore the negative impacts on brain health,” says professor Shaheen Lakhan of California University of Science and Medicine. For anything of importance that requires a high level of processing and understanding, Lakhan recommends printing out the content. “If this isn’t practical, start off with a deep breath before reading anything on your phone,” he says. “Make sure distractors (干扰) are turned off both within your phone and in the general environment, like background noise.” 12. What made the researchers conduct the study? A. The popularity of the mass media. B People’s dependence on smartphones. C. People’s attitudes to traditional media. D. The influence of new media technology. 13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. The steps of the study. B. The results of the study. C. The purposes of the study. D. The advantages of the study. 14. Why does the author mention the previous similar research? A. To support the new study. B. To explain the new study. C. To question the new study. D. To make up for the new study. 15. What advice does Lakhan provide? A. Reducing the use of smartphones. B. Using smartphones at the right time. C. Keeping breathing deeply when reading. D. Staying focused when reading on phones. According to Jessica Hagy, author of How to Be Interesting, it’s not difficult to make yourself interesting at a dinner party. ___16___, if you’re out of your comfort zone or if you’re wandering into somebody’s house for the first time. 6 How do city trees differ from forest trees of the same type over the lifetime in the research? B 5. C 6. B 7. 根据文章第二段“As we all know, the earth would be freezing or burning hot without carbon dioxide. However, carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps energy from the sun as heat. That makes temperatures near the ground rise.(我们都知道,如果没有二氧化碳,地球会变得冰冷或灼热。然而,二氧化碳是一种温室气体,意味着它以热量的形式吸收来自太阳的能量。这使得地面附近的温度上升。)”及本段内容可知,本段主要介绍二氧化碳在保持地球温度方面起着重要作用。故选B项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“To figure out how quicky trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters (the width of their trunks) between 2005 and 2014. A tree’s diameter increases as it grows, just as a person’s waist size increases as they gain weight.(为了弄清楚树木生长得有多快,研究人员在2005年至2014年间追踪了它们的直径(树干的宽度)。一棵树的直径会随着它的成长而增大,就像人的腰围会随着体重的增加而增大一样。)”可知,通过树的直径可以了解树的成长年龄。故选C项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“So over the lifetime of each type of tree, forest trees actually absorbed more carbon dioxide.(所以在每一种树木的一生中,森林中的树木实际上吸收了更多的二氧化碳。)” 根据文章第五段“Street trees also benefit from higher levels of nitrogen (氮) in rainwater. Nitrogen helps plants grow. Waste gases from gas-burning cars also contain nitrogen, thus enriching city air with nitrogen(街道的树木也受益于更高水平的氮(氮)的雨水。氮有助于植物生长。燃气汽车排放的废气中也含有氮,从而使城市空气中富含氮。)”可知,城市中的树木能收获更多的营养,例如氮。故选C项。 C Do you get nervous thinking about geometry, equations (方程式) or a coming math test? B. Math anxiety is what nearly everyone will face. D. Math test -a nightmare for all 【答案】8. C 9. C 10. A 11. If you’re feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist in the US told the BBC. “Just because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail.”(此外,还有一些方法可以管理与数学相关的压力。 故选A。 B。 D Over 85% of adults in the United States report spending more time reading news on their mobile devices than on traditional print media. B. People’s dependence on smartphones. B 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段的“But we don’t just consume news on our phones. But a recent study raises concerns about the tendency of a smartphone version of page-turning.(但我们不只是在手机上阅读新闻。 根据第三段的“The results showed that participants who read the printed version of the text answered more comprehension questions correctly, but brain activity increased regardless of what medium the individuals read from. Participants who read the printed text also sighed more often compared to those who read from a smartphone.(结果显示,阅读印刷版文本的参与者正确回答了更多的理解问题,但无论他们从什么媒介阅读,大脑活动都增加了。 根据第四段的“it’s important to keep in mind that the study’s sample size was only 34 participants. But past research has made similar claims.(重要的是要记住,这项研究的样本量只有34名参与者。 故选A。 根据最后一段的““If this isn’t practical, start off with a deep breath before reading anything on your phone,” he says. “Make sure distractors (干扰) are turned off both within your phone and in the general environment, like background noise.”(他说:“如果这不现实,那就先深呼吸,然后再在手机上阅读任何东西。”“确保手机和一般环境中的干扰因素都被关闭,比如背景噪音。”)”可知,Lakhan提供的建议是在手机上阅读时保持专注。故选D。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 According to Jessica Hagy, author of How to Be Interesting, it’s not difficult to make yourself interesting at a dinner party. ___16___, if you’re out of your comfort zone or if you’re wandering into somebody’s house for the first time.
