记住一个原则: 过于绝对 ( all, only, always, never, certainly) 都是不对的
(2024·广东·中考真题)People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

(2024·广东珠海·三模)People often think of the North Pole (北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen (冰冻的) wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32°F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as -30°F.
▲ , people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th,1909. It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic (北极圈) on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water (水道) called “leads”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

(2024·广东云浮·二模)Sea grasses meadow (草地) are plants that grow in waters near coasts. They help clean the ocean’s water and also provide food for animals like fish. However, sometimes they are in danger. The climate change and human pollution are threatening sea grass meadow in many places around the world.
But the huge sea grass meadow in Shark Bay, off the coast of Western Australia, seems to be growing very well. Scientists from The University of Western Australia and Flinders University wanted to study the sea grass, so they took samples (样本) from 10 different parts of this huge meadow. By comparing the DNA from their samples, the scientists hoped to get an idea of how many different sea grass plants there were in the meadow.
What they learned surprised them—all of the grass samples had almost exactly the same DNA.It meant that they were all just one plant. One big sea grass plant spread out over 200 square kilometers.
So how has the Shark Bay sea grass grown so large? Instead of spreading with flowers and seeds (种子), it spreads by cloning (克隆) itself. As its roots (根) spread out under the sea floor, new plants shoot up from those roots. The Shark Bay sea grass generally grows and spreads about 35 centimeters a year. From this speed, the scientists believe that the plant is about 4,500 years old.
11.What does the underlined word “threatening” in the first paragraph mean?

A.From its roots. B.From its seeds. C.From its flowers. D.From another plant.
14.How do the scientists know about the age of the sea grass?
A.By cloning it. B.By studying its DNA.
C.By knowing its growth speed. D.By testing the water temperature.
15.What is the passage mainly about?
A.A story. B.A discovery. C.A new law. D.A rule.

(2024·广东深圳·三模)Our memories are important in shaping our sense of self. We first have a sense of self early in life, perhaps as young as 18 months. Throughout childhood and puberty, we start to develop a set of views about our identity, including our appearances, personalities, and so on. These views shape our life stories, which gradually become a part of our sense of self.
Of all our memories, the most important are the “self-defining memories”. They are remembered most clearly, and they are the ones that help us build our overall sense of self. By recognizing our self-defining memories, we can have a deeper understanding to ourselves. But how can we recognize them? The easiest way is to think about the events in your life. However, as we get older and experience more events, self-defining memories are always changing.
Interestingly, older adults always find ways to change memories of troubling events into positive stories. In this way, they can make peace with their past adversities. However, for younger adults, troubling events may cause them to experience more pain when they think of them. As scientists have discovered, your happiness comes from what you think about the events, not the events themselves.

(2024·广东汕头·三模)A new movie named YOLO is becoming a hot topic these days. The main character used to be about one hundred and ten kilos. One day, she decided to try boxing. Within a year, she lost fifty kilos by exercising. She finally became someone she wanted to be. Without doubt, exercise brings people a lot.
Exercise helps build muscles (肌肉). Muscle practice like doing push-ups (俯卧撑) is becoming popular in middle schools. It’s a good way to develop muscles and help students grow taller and stronger. For adults, it can make muscles bigger, too.
Exercise helps keep the balance of energy in your body. Food gives your body energy in the form of calories (卡路里). Your body needs a certain number of calories every day just to keep you doing the basic things. But if the amount of energy is more than what you need, the result will be unexpected. For example, if you eat more and move less for the whole winter vacation, you will get more calories than your body needs. Calories will turn into fat. Then exercise can help you lose the fat you don’t need.
Exercise makes you feel delighted. It feels good to have a strong body that can allow you to do all the activities you enjoy—running, jumping, and playing with your friends. Exercise may also make you feel energetic. That’s why exercise is becoming more and more popular.

(2024·广东深圳·三模)① It can be really awkward if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don’t feel bad about it! Talking to yourself actually has a lot of benefits.
② You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps us do things like making plans and managing our feelings. Speaking out loud is like showing this quiet inner speech. It can help us in different areas like school, sports and work.
③ When encouragement comes from oneself, it adds to self-confidence. A 2009 study invited 72 tennis players to take part in some matches. Researchers put the players into two groups: one group that said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better than those in the silent group.
④ Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can also help us manage bad feelings. “Referring to yourself in the third person leads people to think about themselves more similar to how they think about others,” said Jason Moser, a professor from Michigan State University, US. This can help us see things from a different point of view, especially when we’re feeling sad or angry.
⑤ Self-talk also helps improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to memorize things: reading silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. Those who read out loud recalled the information the best, researchers said in their study published in the journal Memory. It’s because the information is likely to become a long-term memory if said out loud.

(2024·广东茂名·三模)Millions of drones (无人机) are expected to be sold every year. However, as more people play with drones, drone accidents also happen more often. If you are a parent buying your children a drone as a toy, here is some safety advice for you, which helps make sure that your children have a better and safer flying experience.
Fly it in good weather. By only playing with your drone during nice conditions, you can avoid a lot of problems. By the way, “good weather” for drones is not just clear skies with no rain. You can have sunny days with strong winds, for example, which can make flying a drone a dangerous experience.
Don’t fly it over someone else’s house. Unless you have been granted by the owner of the house, you shouldn’t fly a drone over other people’s homes. If your drone just happens to run into someone’s yard and hit a child, you may be punished because of the accident.
Stay away from airports. Drones and airports don’t mix well. In fact, some drone apps include airports in their no-fly areas. Bird collisions (碰撞) can’t be avoided, but accidents having to do with drones really should not happen. What’s more, you must know that you can’t fly a drone within 5 miles of an airport. A drone put 130 lives at risk after it nearly hit an airplane near London’s Gatwick Airport, which should never happen again.

(2024·广东中山·三模)AI is like giving superpower to computers. It helps them to learn things and do tasks that people usually do. According to scientists, AI could be used to tell the weather more quickly and correctly than traditional methods.
The traditional way to tell the weather is by collecting data on what is happening in the air. The data may come from places like weather satellites, planes and so on. Then the data is sent to supercomputers for weather reports. Although supercomputers are powerful, it can take many hours to produce results.
AI models have been developed to quickly tell future weather. They can tell the weather by using two sets of data: the weather at present and the weather from six hours ago. AI models are very helpful. They can be used on standard computers like office computers, and it only takes a few minutes to get the results. However, the results may not include as much information as those produced by traditional models.
Will AI take the place of traditional models? Scientists say it probably won’t, but it will be used together with them. That’s because AI still needs to learn from the data collected by traditional methods. But hopefully, AI will be able to deal with tasks that older methods find difficult, such as telling when and how much it will rain in the near future. This could give people enough time to solve the problems caused by bad weather.

(2024·广东揭阳·二模)Cars make our lives convenient and many people can’t live without them. However, they can also be a problem, especially fossil fuel (化石燃料) cars, which cause air pollution. It is widely believed that clean energy and improved fuel technologies can greatly reduce air pollution caused by gas-fueled cars. To improve the environment, many countries are developing electric vehicles (EVs,电动车). Among them, China is taking a leading role and has created the world’s largest EV market.
In 2023, about 14 million EVs were sold worldwide. The number of EVs sold in China was more than 9 million-about three times as large as the number sold in the United States. Ants have the ability to smell out cancerous cells (癌细胞) in humans, which has been discovered by a new study, suggesting that they could be used to find cancer in the future. Researchers from the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) discovered that some ants have a well developed sense of smell. “However more tests must be carried out before they could be used in hospitals.” the team said.
The scientists did tests with 36 ants, smelling cells in the lab. First, they let the ants smell some cancerous human cells. Every time the ants smelt cancerous cells, they were given with sugar. In the second step, the ants were put into two different smells. One was a new smell of healthy cells and the second was still the smell of the cancerous cells. Once the ants found the cancerous cells successfully, the researchers made them smell different cancerous cells. As such, the scientists found that ants could discriminate between cancerous and healthy cells and between two cancerous cells.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animals’ sense of smell to find cancerous cells. “Dogs are good at finding something with their noses. However, training dogs to do so requires several months to a year. On the other hand, insects can be easily raised, they are inexpensive, and hundreds of them can be trained with fewer times,” the researchers pointed out.
“This study shows that ants are able to learn very quickly. The method can be used for other tasks including finding danger or other diseases,” the researchers added.
66.What can we know from CNRS’s study?
A.Ants work well in treating cancer. B.Ants help humans keep off cancer.
C.Ants can be used to find cancer. D.Ants are used to find people with cancer.
67.Which paragraph tells how the scientists did the tests?

68.What does the underlined word “discriminate” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Tell the stories. B.Tell the influence. C.Tell the truth. D.Tell the differences.
69.What are the advantages of insects compared with dogs in experiments?
① They are cheaper. ② They are easier to be raised.
③ They are better at finding things. ④ They can be trained more quickly.
⑤ They have a sharper sense of smell.
A.①②④ B.①②⑤ C.①③④ D.②③⑤
70.Which can be the best title for the passage?

C.Ants and Dogs: Who is Better? D.Training Ants to Find Illnesses.
(2024·广东湛江·二模)Why are some people just 1.5 meters tall, while others reach 2 meters? Studies have found that genes (基因) decide one’s height. There are about 4,000 genetic variants (变异体) that play an important role. Each of them might make a person’s height taller or shorter.
Now scientists in the US have found the most important genetic variant for deciding the height so far. This genetic variant causes people to be shorter. Each piece of this genetic variant can make a person’s height 2.2 cm lower more or less. If people have two pieces from their parents, they will be 4.4 cm shorter, more or less.
These findings were developed from a study of people in Peru. A According to the research, the height of men is about 1.65 meters, while women are about 1.52 meters. Scientists said people in Peru whose family are native Americans have this genetic variant.
Scientists also found that the living environment might have an impact on one’s height. People in Peru who live by the sea have more genetic variants than those living in mountains or rainforests.
One more question: why can’t we keep growing taller? We grow taller because our bones (骨头) grow. Bones increase in length because of the growth plates inside them. However, when we are about ten years old, the growth plates become fully grown. When we are about eighteen years old, they stop growing. So we can’t grow taller anymore.
71.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.People can decide their own height. B.Genetic variants are bad for people’s health.
C.Everyone has a chance to grow up to 2 meters. D.People’s genes are very important for their height.
72.How much shorter might Jack be if he has three pieces of genetic variants?
A.2.2 cm. B.4.4 cm. C.6.6 cm. D.8.8 cm.
73.Which is the the best sentence to fill in the blank “ A ” in Paragraph 3?
A.They want to become taller. B.They are known for being short.
C.They are as short as their parents. D.They are taller than native Americans.
74.What does the underlined word “impact” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Agreement. B.Influence. C.Operation. D.Opinion.
75.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The amazing variants of genes. B.The height of people in Peru.
C.The differences of height around the world. D.The latest studies of human genes.
