Passage 2
Every night after dinner, my mother and I would sit at the kitchen table. She would 9 new tests, taking her examples from stories of amazing children she had read in newspapers and magazines.
The first night she brought out a story about a three-year-old boy who knew the capitals of all the states in our country and 10 most of the European countries. A teacher also said the little boy could also pronounce the names of the foreign cities correctly.
“What’s the capital of Finland?” my mother asked me, looking at the magazine story.
All I knew was the capital of California. “Nairobi!” I guessed, saying the most 11 word I could think of. She checked to see if that was possibly one way to pronounce “Helsinki” before showing me the answer.
The tests got 12 . One night I had to look at a page from the Bible (圣经) for three minutes and then report everything I could remember. I said all I remembered. And I saw my mother’s disappointed (失望的) face once again, something inside of me began to 13 . I hated the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectations. Before going to bed that night, I looked in the mirror in the bathroom and when I saw only my face looking back—and that it would always be this ordinary face—began to cry. I made loud noises like a mad animal.
And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy (奇才) side of me because I have never seen that face before. I looked at myself in the mirror, blinking (眨眼) so I could see more 14 . The girl looking back at me was angry, strong. This girl and I were the same. I had new thoughts. I won’t let my mother 15 me. I won’t be what I’m not.
So the following nights when my mother presented her tests, I performed listlessly, my head on one arm. I pretended (假装) to be bored. And I was. I started to think about other things. Soon, she noticed I was absent-minded. We had a talk and I told her what I thought and how I felt about the tests. Then the whole evening, she seemed to be thinking.
The next day, she presented me some 16 tests. I found my pleasure and confidence back again, and we started to be on the way to make me a prodigy I could be.

She gave David a hug at the door and 17 him a package. But when he started to open it, she said, “This is for the baby. You and I will have a treat later this week.” Slowly David walked outside. He had swept the front porch(门厅) this morning, even the leaves that were 18 in the corners—but Aunt Sue hadn’t noticed.
He heard whistling down the block. It was Mr. Larkin, the mailman. David decided to meet him. He jumped all the way down the sidewalk on one foot and didn’t even fall down. But Mr. Larkin just said, “I hear you have a new baby sister. Aren’t you 19 ?” And he gave David the mail.

His brother Jeff, home from kindergarten, rushed into the kitchen. David held up his sandwich. “Look, Jeff. I made my own 21 .” But Jeff just nodded and said, “Guess what? The baby smiled at me!” David ate his sandwich. It wasn’t that good after all. He could hardly taste the jelly.
The house was quiet. Mother and the baby were taking a nap, and Jeff was outside playing. David got out his crayons and drew a whole page of turtles, each a different color. The front door opened. It was his big sister Beth, home from high school. He took his picture in to show her. She smiled. Then she took out a little package and said, “Look, David. I got these little shoes for 22 . Aren’t they cute?” And she ran upstairs to show Mother.
David went outside and got his bike. He rode up and down the sidewalk, very slowly. His stomach hurt. Finally he went back in the house. Mother was just coming out of the kitchen. She held out her arms. “Come and give me a hug, David. I’ve hardly seen you all day. What have you been doing?”
All of a sudden his stomach felt better. He gave his mother a big hug and took her hand. “I’ll show you,” he said. He took her out on the porch. “ David, you swept the porch — you even got the leaves in the corners!”
He felt a big smile pop out on his face. He jumped down all the steps on one foot. She clapped. “And you didn’t even 23 .”
He took her back in the house to see his turtle picture. She looked at each turtle carefully. “David, this is a wonderful picture. Let’s put it up on the refrigerator, so Daddy can see it when he gets home.” They walked together into the kitchen. There was the baby, still sleeping and making little wiggling noises. David looked at his mother, but she was busy taping his picture to the refrigerator.
He reached over and touched the baby’s hand. She grabbed(抓住)his finger and held on 24 . A warm, wonderful feeling filled David. Mother walked over and put her arm around his shoulder. “I’m glad this baby has you for a big brother.” David smiled up at Mother. “Me too,” he said.

Passage 9
(Vertical Garden)
Vertical Gardens
Henrietta did not have a big yard. She only had a small deck (平台) overlooking a tiny piece of grass. It was not enough yard for her dog to play on. She 1 a garden really badly, but did not have space. What could she do?
For a while, she just kept a few plants in pots on the deck. They took up space and there was hardly any space for her table and chairs. So, she made some flower boxes with rope to put plants in. She 2 one on her window and put two more on the bars, which were great for flowers. This helped for a time, but she still longed for more.
She 3 got an idea: if she couldn’t build out, why not build up? She had heard of vertical gardening from a friend. She had wooden fences (栅栏) all around her little piece of grass, so if she could fix some pots to the fence, she could 4 up into that space, and her dog could still play.
She went to the building store and got some supplies. It was 5 to find pots that would fit what she had in mind. So she looked around to find something else for her vertical garden. Then she had an idea with rain gutters (排水槽). Rain gutters could hold water, so why not plants? She decided to 6 them.
Back at home, she fixed the boards to her fence for supporting the gutters. She put caps on the end and extra supports in the middle. Then she filled them with potting soil and planted three long rows of 7 .

Passage 10

With 9 interest we would watch the money becoming less and less. At last Papa would ask, “Is that all?” When Mama nodded, we could relax a little. For Mama would look up and smile, “It's good.” she’d say. “We do not have to go to the Bank.”
It was a wonderful thing, that bank account (银行账户) of Mama’s. We were all so proud of it. It gave us such a warm, 10 feeling.
When finishing school Nels wanted to go on to high. “It will cost a little money,” Nels said to Mama. We gathered around the table watching a box in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank” — used for unexpected situations. Nels had it all written out. So much for what he would need. Mama looked at the 11 for a long time. Mama smiled at him. Papa said, “It's not enough.” Then he took his pipe out of his mouth. “I give up smoking,” he said. Mama 14 the table and touched Papa’s hand, but she didn’t say anything.
“I will mind the Elvington children every Friday night,” I said. “It's good,” Mama said.
We all felt very good. We had passed another milestone (绊脚石) without having to go downtown and draw money out of the bank.
So many things, I remember, came out of the Little Bank during the past 20 years. Even during the Strike (罢⼯) , Mama wouldn’t let us worry too much. We all worked together so that the important trip downtown could be put off.
The day the Strike was over and Papa went back to work, I saw Mama stand a little straighter, as if to get a kind out of her back.
Last year I sold my first story. I hurried to Mama’s and showed her the check. “For you,” I said, “to put in your Bank Account.”
“There is no 15 ,” Mama said. “In all my life, I’ve never been inside a Bank.”
And when I didn’t — couldn’t — answer, Mama said 16 , “It's not good for little ones to be afraid — to not feel safe. ”
