Every so often, 31-year-old Chen Jiawen, a product designer at a technology company Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, sets aside a day for herself called Unplug Day. On this day, she disconnects from the digital world and focuses on real-life experiences. In the morning, she prepares breakfast for herself while listening to music. In the afternoon, she wanders through the park with friends and in the evening, they enjoy a meal together without touching their phones, engaged in deep conversation. Upon returning home, she spends the evening reading. Chen started the plan as she often felt “interrupted” by technology, citing moments of distraction (分心) like pop-up notifications, ring tones and repetitious warnings leading her to check for new messages, and feelings of information overload. “Occasionally disconnecting from the network is like feeding the brain a day of vegetarian food,” Chen said. Unplug Day is part of her plan to combat information overload from overusing the phone and to rebuild her focus. In addition to this, she has started replacing short videos with longer ones and prioritizes reading in-depth news articles or books. “When friends gather and everyone is glued to their phones, it makes me uncomfortable,” Chen said, adding that burying herself in social media prevented her from completing work as planned, leading to psychological burdens and a decreasing focus. It’s become a common situation where modem people might unconsciously use the time spent waiting at traffic lights to watch a short video or constantly check out a trending topic upon receiving a push notification from an app. To prevent this sense of being “controlled” by mobile devices, some young Chinese like Chen are experimenting with digital minimalism and are discovering positive outcomes from their efforts. Technology should bring us joy, not reduce the time we spend with family or increase our anxiety. Our goal is to control technology rather than letting it control us. 1.What can we learn about Unplug Day? A.It is a day for reading. B.It is a day without phones. More than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, most of which were stolen and illegally shipped out (运出) of China during the times of war before 1949. About 1.67 million pieces are housed in more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors. Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23, 000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago. The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back. In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn to official channels (渠道) to demand the return of relics. In 2003, a priceless (无价的) Bronze Pig’s Head (青铜猪头) dating from the Qing Dynasty (清朝) was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago. Macao entrepreneur (企业家) Stanley Ho (何鸿燊) donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing. Although buying-back is the most possible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a big headache. In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database (数据库) collecting relevant information. It has signed several international agreements with many countries on this matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics by working closely with several international organizations. 11.What can be inferred from paragraph 1? A.We need to forcefully demand the return of lost cultural relics. B.Private collectors made a fortune by selling cultural relics. C.The war caused a serious loss of Chinese cultural relics. D.Countries of the world prefer Chinese cultural relics. 12.How the Bronze Pig’s Head returned to the motherland? A.Purchase through our government. B.Donate through Stanley Ho. C.Return through foreign governments. D.Recover through scientists. 13.What efforts have the Chinese government made to recover lost cultural relics? ①Set up a national project to recover. ②Found a database to collect information. ③Sign several international agreements. ④Establish several international organizations. A.①②③ B.①②④ C.②③④ D.①②③④ 14.Which will be talked about in the following paragraph? A.The cultural relics to be brought back to China. B.Some funds raised by the Chinese government. It's a far cry from the lonely days when Gill and John were widowed after 47 and nearly 50 years. John was in “a black hole” when a friend told him about a dating site for the elderly. Meanwhile, Gill was also feeling down and researching such dating sites. “Opportunities to meet a partner close down as you get older. Meeting online makes sense when you want to find some one with similar interests,” explain sretired Gill. They both took a leap of faith and joined Wrinklies Connection.com. Gill admits, “I was scared to death. I found him handsome with a lovely crop of hair!” John found Gill similarly attractive, genuine and easy to talk to. They began to meet regularly and text every day. Gill laughs, “We have the same sense of humour. My elder son said we were just like a pair of giddy teenagers!” Happily, they became engaged at snowdrop time and Gills’ sons, Andrew and Julian, walked her down the aisle on April 22, 2017 with 250 delighted friends and family sharing the celebration. “We are immensely grateful to Wrinklies Connections for the joy it has brought us,” says Gill. During the sessions, many proposals (提案) and suggestions were put forward. Here are two issues that were discussed during the sessions that might interest you. Smartphone ban (禁令) According to the survey conducted last year, 68.1 percent of Chinese primary and junior high school students have their own smartphones. To keep students from playing with their smartphones in class, some schools have already banned smartphones on campus. Lei Yanqin, a deputy (代表) of the National People’s Congress (NPC, 全国人民代表大会), suggested that smartphones should be banned at schools nationwide. She said that listening to music and playing games in class not only bother teachers, but also make it difficult for students to concentrate She added that students might also show off their phones too much.Video game rating system (分级制度) Over 200 million teenagers across China play online games like King of Glory (《王者荣耀》), Guangming Daily reported. With their computers and tablets, teenagers are able to play most online games produced in China and abroad. However, some games have violent (暴力的) or vulgar (粗俗的) content that might not be suitable for young people. Many NPC deputies suggested that a rating system for online games should be introduced. All games would be put into age groups according to their content. Players would have to give their ID numbers before playing certain games. 22.According to the passage, which of the following sentences is TRUE? A.Half of Chinese primary and junior high school students have their own smartphones. B.Smartphones have been banned on campus in all schools around China. A.worked out B.carried out C.put out D.found out 24.What is the best title of the passage? A.Disadvantages of smartphones B.Teenagers’ problems C.Influences of online games D.The coming changes A recent survey in the US found that Gen Z-ers and Millennials (千禧一代) visit libraries more often than their parents or grandparents. The young love libraries because they are secure, comfortable, free and — as my 11-year-old would say — “aesthetic”. This means they look good in the background of an Instagram post or TikTok video. Libraries are also a great place to meet people. If you’re both young and in a library, chances are that you have similar interests. And then, too, there are the books. Gen Z-ers are turning out to be big readers, especially of paper books. Even though they have smartphones, the most limitlessly distracting devices ever invented, in their pockets, many are deliberately choosing to pick up a piece of 15th-century technology instead. They like the fact that books are self-contained and require concentration. There is, sometimes, a sense of nostalgic (怀旧的) cosplay in the way young people read. In New York, for example, the latest TikTok-fuelled craze is reading with strangers in bars. You have to buy a ticket in advance, and then you all gather and sit in silence for 30 minutes, reading whatever book you’ve brought along. Like an expensive version of going to the library, except that afterwards you all have a drink and talk about books. The very thought of it makes me suffer, but that’s because I’m a child of the 1970s and 1980s. To me, reading is a private pleasure, while screens — TV or cinema — are social. I did once, in a fit of ambitious parenting, introduce a “family reading hour”, during which my husband and children were pressed to join me at the fireside for some silent reading. It could not have felt more performative if we had dressed up in top hats and crinolines But still, I applaud these young readers — for knowing what is good for them, for seeking out human connection, for finding the beauty and pleasure in old institutions, and for bringing new life to the library. 25.What does the underlined word “aesthetic” in paragraph l mean? A.Visually appealing. B.Similarly private. C.Spiritually relaxing. D.Economically practical. 26.Why do many young people choose to read paper books despite having smartphones? A.Paper books are cheaper than smartphones. B.Paper books are easier to carry around. C.Paper books are a form of nostalgic entertainment. D.Paper books offer a distraction-free reading experience. 27.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.The popularity of TikTok in New York. B.A gathering attended by strangers free of charge. C.A new reading trend integrating the old and new. D.Historical costumes and their appeal to young readers. 28.Why does the author mention a “family reading hour” in paragraph 4? A.To highlight her success in parenting the children. B.To illustrate her attempt to combine personal and joint reading habits. C.To criticize the lack of interest in performance among family members. D.To emphasize the importance of dressing formally during family activities. The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children, concluded as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck a chord with many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly-competitive society. Many millennials (千禧一代) and generation Zs (z世代,1995-2009年间出生的人) complained to the Global Times that burdens, including work stress, family disputes (纷争) and financial strains, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “involution (内卷),” joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers. “Instead of always following the ‘values’ of struggle, endure (忍耐) and sacrifice (牺牲) to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis (宣泄) and adjustment,” said a scholar. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage (按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.” Interestingly, the majority of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of morale (士气) far beyond their reach. “Young people on campus have both ambition and confusion about their future, but most of us have refused to set ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,” a postgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.” 35.What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 mean? A.Warned. B.Frightened. C.Touched. D.Amused. 36.What’s the scholar’s attitude toward the “lying down” group? A.Understanding. B.Negative. C.Supportive. D.Unclear. 37.What can be inferred about the young generation from the text? A.They never really drop their responsibilities. B.They really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle. C.They find their dreams far beyond their reach. D.They would rather escape than take challenges. 38.This passage is most likely extracted from? A.an article introducing the latest developments B.a journal about “lying down” lifestyle C.a research paper on society D.a senior school textbook on the young people Mangabe forest in Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot Trees are circled by leafy plants filled with insects. As we follow our guides along the road to Mangabe village, a nearby tree shakes. It is a golden mantella — an endangered animal that — like so many species (物种) here — lives only in Madagascar. We're going there to meet a group of Malagasy teenagers — young farmers who are changing how people farm in order to save their forest. In Mangabe, communities make their livelihoods entirely through farming. The old method is often called “slash and burn” — cutting down a piece of forest and setting fire to it. When the nutrients in the ash ( 灰里的养分) are used up, that cycle starts again. “It causes serious deforestation,” says our guide Voahirana Randriamamonjy from the Malagasy conservation organization Madagasikara Voakajy. Voahirana and her team are here to train the teenage members as part of their “Youth for Lemurs” project. This community-based project sets out to provide the new generation of farmers with the skills, knowledge and tools needed to grow their food without harming the forest. The modern farming methods may not appear revolutionary ( 革命性的), but they provide life-changing profit. They enable the same land to be farmed each season, avoiding the need to clear more forest. And they produce higher yields (产量). “I feel very happy,” 15-year-old Nantenaina says. “By planting just a small piece of land, I can produce a high yield. And if we can do this it means people will not cut and clear the forest. That's why I took part in this project.” Nantenaina says that, since the project started three years ago, older villagers have started coming to the young pioneers for advice about their methods — wanting to understand how they achieve their higher yields. “The future of the forest,” says Voahirana, “depends on these young people. They have these new skills, which they can teach to their kids. So the next generation will be able to farm environmentally.” 39.Why did the author mention the golden mantella in paragraph 1? A.To show that animals live happily in Mangabe village. B.To explain why Mangabe forest is popular among tourists. C.To state that many animals in Mangabe forest are endangered. D.To prove that Mangabe forest is home to many special species. 40.What is the purpose of the “Youth for Lemurs” project? A.To help bring back endangered animals. B.To teach young farmers modern farming skills. C.To call on the local people to plant new forest. D.To offer poor kids opportunities to receive education. 41.What does the underlined word “profit” in paragraph 5 mean? A.Method. B.Experience. C.Benefit. D.Expectation. 42.Why did Nantenaina join the “Youth for Lemurs” project? A.To get great job opportunities. B.To protect the forest in her hometown. C.To learn some skills and help her parents. D.To be as skillful as older farmers in her village. Netizens have praised Yu Tiantian from Zhengzhou, Henan province, for insisting on dancing for 15 years despite having a hearing disability from birth, People’s Daily reported on Sunday. Born in the 1990s, Yu’s world has been silent since she was a year old when her family found she couldn’t hear any voices. Through touching her mother’s throat to feel how the muscles affect the voice, Yu learned to speak. However, like any other girl, Yu has a natural love for beauty. Watching others dance in a club during her childhood, Yu developed a deep affection for dance, although she lacked a formal dance background. After graduating from high school, Yu was admitted to the Zhengzhou Normal University School of Special Education, majoring in dance. It was only when her university life started that she began to change, making friends and embracing a colorful world. Learning dance posed a great challenge for Yu. “I can’t hear the music, so I have to feel rhythm in my heart. I follow the instructor and dance. I practice basic skills every day. However, mastering the technique of those horizontal and vertical crosses was a struggle, and the pain in my feet and ankles often made me shed tears,” said Yu. After entering university, Yu has found her own pace and danced with all her heart. She and her roommates won first prize in a dance competition. Encouraged by it, she began to take part in various competitions. Yu shares much in common with her roommates, all of whom have hearing disabilities. Within a relaxed and harmonious atmosphere, their relationship grew much stronger. Gradually, they had the idea to share their stories with more people. Yu also posted videos showing how people with hearing disabilities gossip in sign language, which proves to be livelier than verbal conversation. With her account gaining popularity, Yu has become more confident and even has her own fanbase. “People with hearing disabilities can also record their lives and help others. No one is born with discrimination. Eliminating bias can start by seeing our daily lives,” she added. 43.What made Yu Tiantian major in dance? A.Her natural love for beauty. B.Her passion for dance. C.Her formal dance background. D.Her parents’ encouragement. 44.Which of the following words can best describe Yu as a student? A.Determined and optimistic. B.Generous and cooperative. C.Sensitive and responsible. D.Outgoing and humorous. 45.What can we infer from Yu’s university life with her roommates? A.They were too shy to share their stories with others. B.They won prizes in every dance competition. C.They lived in harmony with each other. D.They had no common hobbies. 46.According to Yu, how do people with disabilities want to be treated? A.The disabled can do everything that normal people do. B.The disabled should take the bias for granted. C.The disabled should be taken good care of. D.The disabled should be fairly treated. When I was in fourth grade, I worked part-time as a paperboy. Mrs. Stanley was one of my customers. She’d watch me coming down her street, and by the time I’d biked up to her doorstep, there would be a cold drink waiting. I’d sit and drink while she talked. Mrs. Stanley talked mostly about her dead husband, “Mr. Stanley and I went shopping this morning.” she’d say. The first time she said that, soda (汽水) went up my nose. I told my father how Mrs. Stanley talked as if Mr. Stanley were still alive. Dad said she was probably lonely, and that I ought to sit and listen and nod my head and smile, and maybe she’d work it out of her system. So that’s what I did, and it turned out Dad was right. After a while she seemed content to leave her husband over at the cemetery (墓地). I finally quit delivering newspapers and didn’t see Mrs. Stanley for several years. Then we crossed paths at a church fund-raiser She was spooning mashed potatoes and looking happy. Four years before, she’d had to offer her paperboy a drink to have someone to talk with. Now she had friends. Her husband was gone, but life went on. I live in the city now, and my paperboy is a lady named Edna with three kids. She asks me how I’m doing. When I don’t say “fine”, she sticks around to hear my problems. She’s lived in the city most of her life, but she knows about community. Community isn’t so much a place as it is a state of mind. You find it whenever people ask how you’re doing because they care, and not because they’re getting paid to do so. Sometimes it’s good to just smile, nod your head and listen. 47.Why did soda go up the author’s nose one time? A.He was talking fast. B.He was shocked. C.He was in a hurry. In 1931, Americans were suffering through the Great Depression. It was The Good Earth by Pearl Buck that brought comfort, the top-selling book that year. Born into a religious workers' family in 1892, Pearl Buck left the United States and moved to China with her parents. Her education began at home with her mother teaching her American school things while a Chinese tutor taught her other subjects, including writings of Confucius. In 1910, she went back to America to study philosophy. After graduation, she returned to China and married John Lossing Buck, an agriculture expert, eventually settling down in a small village in the north of China. It was her first child Carol, who had an unusual disease causing her to have trouble learning, that made Pearl Buck become a famous writer. The reason was money. She needed it to pay for her daughter's care. She recalled why she chose China and its people as the subjects, “If non e of you want to write these wonderful farmers, I will write about them. So I wrote The Good Earth.” The Good Earth tells the story of a poor Chinese man named Wang Lung and his wife O-Lan. It tells how they work hard and finally make enough money to purchase some land for a farm. They stick to the land even in times of starvation. Wang finds happiness in owning land and raising crops. He even prohibits his sons to sell the land after his death. Pearl Buck told her China stories with honesty and Americans were impressed by the new images of the Chinese. The book earned Pearl Buck the Pulitzer Prize and in 1938, she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. 50.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? My eye-opening years living among the locals in Nicaragua Having lived among the locals in Nicaragua (尼加拉瓜) or what is now three years, I’ve experienced cultural differences that are still alien to my British eyes. While I find it rather disgraceful to try to attract the attention of someone with a sound which a Brit would reserve only for calling animals, for him this is perfectly normal and polite. I also think it is rude to walk into a shop and say give me without a please or a thank you but he doesn’t and neither does the shopkeeper. I have also had to learn yet another foreign language of hand gestures and body language. “Come here” is always done with the palm down, smacking the elbows implies a person is tight with their money and the strangers one of all for me is —pointing with the lips the first few times this happened it looked like someone was blowing me a kiss—how wrongly I could have translated that one. Economic status of Nicaragua, one of the poorest Central American nations, influences its culinary practices. I have to confess to becoming thoroughly bored with gallo pinto—the ubiquitous rice and beans dish of Nicaragua—after a few weeks but for many Nicaraguans this is breakfast, lunch and dinner, their whole life. It is the cheapest way to keep the family fed and where food is concerned nothing here is wasted. Can you imagine piling the entire family onto a scooter It’s perfectly normal for Nicaraguans. Dad drives, the child old enough to stand is perched on the footplate holding onto the handlebars, a toddler clings onto dad’s back while mum with a babe in arms is riding (sometimes side-saddle) at the back. Even after three years, it still fascinates me that the locals can sit in a rocking chair outside their houses, doing nothing for hours, without getting bored. There have been times when i have been led to question my own attitudes and been shown levels of patience, bravery and positivity in the face of hardship which my own culture could learn a great deal from. 54.Which of the following actions is unusual for Nicaraguans? A.Pointing to the things they want with the lip. B.Showing their strength by smacking the elbows. C.Serving customers without saying “please” or “thank you”. D.Greeting with a sound of what a Brit thinks of as calling animals. 55.Which word can best replace the underlined word “culinary” in Paragraph 4? A.Trading. B.Cooking. C.Traveling. D.Communicating. 56.How many family members can be on a scooter according to the text? A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six. 57.What does the writer think of Nicaraguan culture after there for three years? A.Strange and boring. B.Simple and uncivilized. C.Backward but fascinating. D.Surprising but worth learning. STINSON BEACH CLEAN-UP PROJECT Help us keep Stinson Beach clean this summer! Having quite possibly the largest age gap (差距) of any housemates in the UK, the pair say they hit it off and have a great time living together. They watch afternoon TV together, chat over a cup of tea, and do some of the cleaning together — “It’s no different from living with university students,” said Alexandra. Florence has lived in the London home for over 50 years. Having retired from her job at the age of 70, and with her family living far away, she was left on her own. To avoid feeling lonely, she signed up for house sharing with Homeshare, the charity which paired her with Alexandra. “Sharing your home is a great idea. Loneliness is horrible. Having someone else in the home makes a big difference. You don’t have to worry about falling over or hurting yourself. And more importantly, it’s lovely to have somebody to talk to during the day,” Florence said. Florence added, “I was already 67 years old when my housemate was born, and when I told my friends about it, they thought it was strange. But the more they find out about it, the more they think it’s a very good idea.” Alexandra said she was originally frightened by the idea of moving to London and living with an older person, but she thinks it has made her experience in the capital much better and has been a great way to cover sky-high rental costs. “It just didn’t seem like the normal thing to do, living with an older person,” she explained. “But now it’s like being with an old family friend. It gives me somewhere homely to come back to in the evening, which is great.” 64.What does the underlined part “hit it off ” in the first paragraph probably mean? A.Have quarrels. B.Get along well. D.Being away from her family. The effects of advertising often work in tricky (狡猾的) ways. Many people don’t even realize they are being marketed to when they change their behaviour after encountering advertisements. Since advertising is a powerful psychological tool, an entire field of study, which is devoted to unlocking how advertising influences consumers’ behaviour, has been developed. Another effect of advertising is educating consumers about specific products or services. This can be part of the persuasion written in an ad. In an advertisement, a company can influence possible buyers by showing how the product works and how it can solve the problems they face or at least ease those problems. For example, a dog owner who previously thought there was no solution to his dog’s anxiety can learn through a dog vest (背心) ad that there actually is a solution, and that solution is the gentle pressure provided by the vest. Advertisements generally use similar language. Many advertisements are designed to make the viewers take immediate action. Words and phrases often used in such ads include “Buy now!” “Get started!” and “Try now!”. Specifically, the part of an ad that pushes for immediate action is called “call to action”, which is important to any ad because it drives the viewers or listeners to take action. Besides, companies usually use persuasive language in the rest of the advertisement. This can be a recommendation from a previous buyer, a chart showing the product’s benefits, or a list of the product’s benefits. Advertising is part of marketing. Although the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably (可以互换地), they aren’t the same thing. Marketing is the broad process of researching consumers’ needs, collecting and evaluating data related to those needs and developing various strategies for attracting consumers. Advertising, on the other hand, strictly refers to the process of attracting potential customers to make a sale. 68.What’s the effect of advertising on consumers? A.Having children as advertising targets. B.Appearing to have good sales of a product. C.Asking people to buy the product or service directly. D.Educating consumers about specific products or services. 69.What does the author want to show by telling the story about the dog owner? A.Consumers’ problems are the inspiration for advertisers. B.Consumers learn about products for pets from advertisements. C.Consumers are influenced by advertisements offering solutions to their problems. D.Consumers’ needs can be satisfied by companies devoted to advertising. 70.What does the author focus on in the last paragraph? A.The process of advertising. B.The importance of advertising. C.The effect of marketing and advertising. D.The relationship between advertising and marketing 71.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.How does advertising influence people? B.What are the advantages of advertising? C.How does marketing differ from advertising? D.What are people’s attitudes towards advertising. A significant proportion of the American populace within the working-age demographic are encountering challenges in meeting the financial demands associated with health care, as per a recent comprehensive evaluation. This study, which is the inaugural edition of the Health Care Affordability Survey conducted by the Commonwealth Fund, reveals that a substantial 51 percent of adults falling within the age bracket of 19 to 64 years have expressed that affording health care for themselves and their family is either exceedingly challenging or moderately difficult. This observation encompasses 43 percent of individuals who are beneficiaries of health insurance provided by their employers and an even higher 57 percent who have secured health insurance through a marketplace or have opted for an individual plan. Additionally, it is noteworthy that nearly one-half of the working-age adults who are under the Medicare program and 45 percent of those who are recipients of Medicaid also admit to facing hardships in covering their health care expenses. It is particularly striking that a majority, specifically 65 percent, of working-age adults have indicated that the escalation in the cost of various goods and services over the past year has had a detrimental impact on their capacity or that of their family to manage health care expenses. The aforementioned survey, which is based on a sample that is representative of the nation and comprises nearly 7,900 individuals who are 19 years of age or older, was carried out from the mid-point of April through the month of July in the current year. This survey follows on the heels of another analysis conducted by the research entity known as KFF, which demonstrated an upward trend in the costs associated with health insurance for employer-sponsored plans as well as an increase in the contributions made by workers towards these plans in the year 2023. The newly disseminated analysis has further unearthed that 38 percent of the individuals who participated in the survey identified cost as the primary factor that led them or a family member to either forgo or postpone the receipt of necessary health care services or the procurement of prescribed medication within the last 12 months. This includes 29 percent of those who are under the protection of employer-based coverage, 37 percent who are insured through individual and marketplace health plans, 42 percent who are covered by Medicare, and 39 percent who are recipients of Medicaid. Furthermore, it is observed that more than six-tenths of the individuals who are devoid of any form of health insurance have reported that they or a family member have had to delay or forgo medical care due to financial constraints. Among all those who have reported such instances of skipping or delaying care, a considerable 57 percent have stated that a health issue has consequently deteriorated. 72.How does the article present Americans’ health care payment situation? A.By citing data. B.By giving examples. C.By giving reasons. D.By making comparisons. 73.What leads to most working-age Americans’ difficulty in paying health care costs? A.Their heavy debt. B.Unemployment. C.Higher cost of living. D.Higher health care payment. 74.What may the underlined phrase in the fourth paragraph mean? A.Declined. B.Climbed up. C.Remained stable. D.Kept uncertain. 75.What may happen to those who lacked any type of health insurance? A.They may get worse if they have health problems. B.They are sure to obtain help from the government. C.They may have to skip or delay any health problems. D.They may not get affected with any diseases. Electronic waste, or e-waste, has reached levels that cannot be continued. More efforts are needed to take precious metals from abandoned laptops and smartphones. Research shows that over 57 million tons of e-waste was created worldwide in 2021 and people are frustrated about the lack of options to recycle their tech. Building a low-carbon economy will depend on battery technology for electric vehicles and energy storage. Taking the elements from used batteries will be an environmental necessity. Lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries also contain cobalt (钴) and copper (铜), but as mining for these metals creates poisonous pollution that can ruin the environment, so too can battery recycling if not done properly. It’s a problem that needs to be solved quickly. Another strong pressure in mining e-waste for recycled materials is that supplies could stop entirely. Up to 30 different elements are used in smartphones, and six of them are predicted to run out in the next century. “Developing a circular economy where minerals used in tech devices are saved and repurposed could help us to bypass supply chain issues in the future while also helping to reduce environmental impacts,” said RSC president Tom Welton. “It is essential that governments and businesses urgently do more to deal with the world’s growing e-waste crisis and ease the worry on supply chains.” The US generates more than six million tons of e-waste each year and recycles only15 per cent. So there is a huge need to increase and regulate recycling instead of shipping waste abroad, where it is taken apart or made into pieces, releasing poison that can expose workers, including children, to diseases like cancer. Vast quantities are simply burned or buried in landfill to pollute the air, soil and water. Electronic equipment is forecast to generate nearly 75 million metric tons of e-waste annually by 2030—almost double what was created in 2014. Less than 20per cent of global e-waste is currently recycled and that needs to change. 76.What’s the author’s attitude towards the future supplies of certain elements? A.Concerned. B.Satisfied. C.Objective. D.Uncertain. 77.What does Tom Welton suggest? A.Regulating local recycling. B.Boosting efforts to take metals. C.Increasing global e-waste recycling. D.Developing a circular economy for tech minerals. 78.Why does the author mention the US e-waste in the fifth paragraph? A.To show the focus on the problem from the government. B.To make a further prediction about worsening problems. C.To illustrate the seriousness of the problem. D.To find a solution to the problem. 79.What does the passage mainly talk about? A.Mining’s environmental impact. B.Lack of recycling options for tech devices. C.Need for a circular economy in tech devices. D.Growing e-waste crisis and supply chain effects. 根据第一段“On this day, she disconnects from the digital world and focuses on real-life experiences. During the sessions, many proposals (提案) and suggestions were put forward. Here are two issues that were discussed during the sessions that might interest you.(全国上下都在广泛讨论北京的两会。会议期间,提出了许多提案和建议。以下是会议期间讨论的两个问题,您可能会感兴趣)”结合本文介绍了两会期间两个关于青少年的议题,可知,D选项“即将到来的变化”最符合文章标题。故选D。 25.A 26.D 27.C 28.B 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了Z世代和千禧一代喜欢去图书馆的原因、新的读书方式、作者的读书见解。 25.词句猜测题。根据第一段中“The young love libraries because they are secure, comfortable, free and—as my 11-year-old would say—‘aesthetic’. This means they look good in the background of an Instagram post or TikTok video.”(年轻人喜欢图书馆,因为它们安全、舒适、免费,而且——正如我11岁的儿子所说——‘aesthetic’。 A. They like the fact that books are self-contained and require concentration.”(尽管他们口袋里有智能手机,这种有史以来最具干扰性的设备,许多人还是故意选择拿起一件15世纪的技术。 根据第三段中“In New York, for example, the latest TikTok-fuelled craze is reading with strangers in bars. You have to buy a ticket in advance, and then you all gather and sit in silence for 30 minutes, reading whatever book you’ve brought along. Like an expensive version of going to the library, except that afterwards you all have a drink and talk about books.”(例如,在纽约,最新的TikTok热潮是在酒吧里与陌生人一起阅读。 根据第四段中“I did once, in a fit of ambitious parenting, introduce a ‘family reading hour’, during which my husband and children were pressed to join me at the fireside for some silent reading. It could not have felt more performative if we had dressed up in top hats and crinolines 29.D 30.A 31.A 【导语】这是一篇应用文。 根据文章“Who Can Participate in the Pre-College Program?”部分内容“You must meet the following criteria: Will graduate from high school and enter college in 2025 or 2026. This is a great way to enhance your college application. Please note: You need to attend every class entirely to receive a passing grade of AR.(在课程结束时,您将收到导师的书面评估,以及哈佛成绩单,成绩为AR或NM(“满足所有要求”或“不满足要求”)。 故选A项。 31. 根据文章首段内容“Harvard’s Pre-College Program for high school students is an intensive two-week summer program designed to give you a glimpse of college life. You will live on the Harvard campus during your two-week session while taking a college-level course with other Pre-College Program students.(哈佛大学面向高中生的大学预科课程是一个为期两周的强化暑期课程,旨在让你一窥大学生活。 故选A项。 根据第一段第一句“Since 2012, Stonyhurst has united pupils from across the world to experience a summer like no other.(自2012年以来,斯通赫斯特将来自世界各地的学生联合起来,体验一个与众不同的夏天。)” 根据第二段最后一句“Pupils are assigned to a small class of pupils with similar levels of English and their progress is continuously monitored and teaching is tailored accordingly.(学生被分配到一个由英语水平相近的学生组成的小班,他们的进步会被持续监控,教学也会相应地调整。)” 根据最后一段第二句“Children will benefit from Stonyhurst’s attractive museum which is proud of its impressive old objects, including a rare first edition of Shakespeare’s First Folio.(孩子们将受益于斯通赫斯特吸引人的博物馆,该博物馆以其令人印象深刻的古老物品而自豪,包括罕见的第一版莎士比亚的《第一对开本》。)” A。 35.C 36.A 37.A 38.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据上文的“The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children(低物质欲望,低消费,拒绝工作,结婚和生孩子)”和下文的“… many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly-competitive society(许多中国年轻人渴望在这个快节奏、竞争激烈的社会中停下来喘口气)”年轻一代的生存状态的描述可知,年轻人对这种观念是认同并受其影响的,画线短语意为“触动,影响”。故选C。 36. 根据第三段“Instead of always following the ‘values’ of struggle, endure (忍耐) and sacrifice (牺牲) to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis (宣泄) and adjustment,(他们不总是遵循奋斗、忍受和牺牲的“价值观”来承受压力,他们更喜欢暂时躺平,作为宣泄和调整。)”和“ It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage (按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.(难怪一些年轻人在抚养孩子和偿还按揭的压力越来越大的今天,会试图以简单的方式生活,把烦恼抛在脑后。)” 故选A。 37. 根据最后一段“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges(校园里的年轻人对未来既有憧憬,也有迷茫,但我们大多数人都拒绝把自己束缚在枷锁中,浪费机会和挑战)”和“It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later(逃跑是没有用的。 故选A。 38. 根据第一段的“ The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children, concluded as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck a chord with many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly-competitive society.(低物质欲望、低消费、不工作、不结婚、不生孩子的“躺平”生活方式,最近引起了许多中国年轻人的共鸣,他们渴望在这个快节奏、竞争激烈的社会中停下来喘口气。)” 因此作者提到“It is a golden mantella — an endangered animal that — like so many species (物种) here — lives only in Madagascar.(这是一种濒临灭绝的金色曼蛙,像这里的许多物种一样,只生活在马达加斯加)”是以自己在这片森林中看到金色曼蛙这件事举例说明本段主旨。故选D。 40. 根据第四段中的“This community-based project sets out to provide the new generation of farmers with the skills, knowledge and tools needed to grow their food without harming the forest.(这个以社区为基础的项目旨在为新一代农民提供在不损害森林的情况下种植粮食所需的技能、知识和工具)”可知,这一项目教年轻一代的农民农耕技术,让他们能在不破坏森林的前提下种庄稼。故选B。 41. 根据划线词后的“They enable the same land to be farmed each season, avoiding the need to clear more forest. And they produce higher yields 根据倒数第三段中的“By planting just a small piece of land, I can produce a high yield. And if we can do this it means people will not cut and clear the forest. That’s why I took part in this project.(只要种一小块地,我就能获得很高的产量。 根据第二段“Watching others dance in a club during her childhood, Yu developed a deep affection for dance, although she lacked a formal dance background.(小时候,她在俱乐部里看着别人跳舞,尽管她没有正式的舞蹈背景,但她对舞蹈产生了深厚的感情)”可知,是因为她从小对舞蹈的热爱使她选择学习舞蹈。故选B。 44. 根据第三段“Learning dance posed a great challenge for Yu. “I can’t hear the music, so I have to feel rhythm in my heart. I follow the instructor and dance. I practice basic skills every day. However, mastering the technique of those horizontal and vertical crosses was a struggle, and the pain in my feet and ankles often made me shed tears,” said Yu.(学习舞蹈对余来说是一个巨大的挑战。“我听不到音乐,所以我必须感受我内心的节奏。我跟着教练跳舞。我每天都练习基本功。然而,掌握那些水平和垂直劈叉的技术是一场斗争,我的脚和脚踝的疼痛经常让我流泪。”)”可知,尽管在学习舞蹈的过程中遇到许多的困难,她仍然能坚持不懈,乐观应对。故选A。 45. 根据第四段“She and her roommates won first prize in a dance competition. Encouraged by it, she began to take part in various competitions. Yu shares much in common with her roommates, all of whom have hearing disabilities. Within a relaxed and harmonious atmosphere, their relationship grew much stronger. Gradually, they had the idea to share their stories with more people.(她和室友们在一次舞蹈比赛中获得了第一名。 根据最后一段““People with hearing disabilities can also record their lives and help others. No one is born with discrimination. Eliminating bias can start by seeing our daily lives,” she added.(“听障人士也可以记录自己的生活,帮助他人。 Stanley talked mostly about her dead husband, “Mr. Stanley and I went shopping this morning.” she’d say. The first time she said that, soda (汽水) went up my nose. 根据第三段中的“So that’s what I did, and it turned out Dad was right. After a while she seemed content to leave her husband over at the cemetery (墓地). A. recover from her sadness从悲伤中恢复过来;B. move out of the neighborhood搬离社区;C. turn to her old friends转向她的老朋友;D. speak out about her past说出她的过去。故选A。 49. 根据最后一段中的“Community isn’t so much a place as it is a state of mind. You find it whenever people ask how you’re doing because they care, and not because they’re getting paid to do so. Sometimes it’s good to just smile, nod your head and listen 根据第二段“Born into a religious workers' family in 1892, Pearl Buck left the United States and moved to China with her parents. After graduation, she returned to China and married John Lossing Buck, an agriculture expert, eventually settling down in a small village in the north of China.(赛珍珠1892年出生于一个宗教工人家庭,随父母离开美国移居中国。 根据第三段“It was her first child Carol, who had an unusual disease causing her to have trouble learning, that made Pearl Buck become a famous writer. 根据第四段“It tells how they work hard and finally make enough money to purchase some land for a farm. They stick to the land even in times of starvation. Wang finds happiness in owning land and raising crops. He even prohibits his sons to sell the land after his death.(它讲述了他们如何努力工作,最终赚到足够的钱来购买一些土地作为农场。 根据最后一段“Pearl Buck told her China stories with honesty and Americans were impressed by the new images of the Chinese. 根据文章第一段“ The effects of advertising often work in tricky (狡猾的) ways. Many people don’t even realize they are being marketed to when they change their behaviour after encountering advertisements. Since advertising is a powerful psychological tool, an entire field of study, which is devoted to unlocking how advertising influences consumers’ behaviour, has been developed.(广告的效果往往以微妙的方式发挥作用。 A。 72.A 73.C 74.B 75.A 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中“a substantial 51 percent (高达51%)”、“43 percent (43%)”、“an even higher 57 percent (更高的57%)”、第三段中“nearly one-half (近一半)”、“45 percent (45%)”、“65 percent (65%)”以及第五段中“38 percent (38%)”、“29 percent (29%)”、“37 percent (37%)”、“42 percent (42%)”和“39 percent (39%)”可知,文章通过引用众多数据来呈现美国人的医疗保健支付状况。故选A项。 73. 根据第三段中“It is particularly striking that a majority, specifically 65 percent, of working-age adults have indicated that the escalation in the cost of various goods and services over the past year has had a detrimental impact on their capacity or that of their family to manage health care expenses. 根据画线部分的下文“as well as an increase in the contributions made by workers towards these plans in the year 2023 (以及到2023年,工人对这些计划的缴款也会增加)”可知,工人缴款增加和前面的趋势是并列关系,再结合“in the costs associated with health insurance for employer-sponsored plans (与雇主赞助计划的医疗保险相关的费用)”可推知,这一费用是呈现上升趋势,画线部分意为“呈上升趋势”,与Climbed up“逐渐上升”意思一致。故选B项。 75. 根据最后一段“Furthermore, it is observed that more than six-tenths of the individuals who are devoid of any form of health insurance have reported that they or a family member have had to delay or forgo medical care due to financial constraints. Among all those who have reported such instances of skipping or delaying care, a considerable 57 percent have stated that a health issue has consequently deteriorated. 故选A项。 根据第二段中“Building a low-carbon economy will depend on battery technology for electric vehicles and energy storage. Taking the elements from used batteries will be an environmental necessity.( 建设低碳经济将取决于电动汽车和能源储存的电池技术。 以及第三段中“Another strong pressure in mining e-waste for recycled materials is that supplies could stop entirely. Up to 30 different elements are used in smartphones, and six of them are predicted to run out in the next century.(从电子垃圾中回收材料的另一个巨大压力是供应可能完全停止。 故选A。 77. 根据第四段中““Developing a circular economy where minerals used in tech devices are saved and repurposed could help us to bypass supply chain issues in the future while also helping to reduce environmental impacts,” said RSC president Tom Welton.( RSC主席Tom Welton说:“发展循环经济,节约和重新利用科技设备中使用的矿物,可以帮助我们在未来绕过供应链问题,同时也有助于减少对环境的影响。”)” 根据第五段中“The US generates more than six million tons of e-waste each year and recycles only15 per cent.(美国每年产生600多万吨电子垃圾,其中只有15%被回收利用。)”以及本段中“Vast quantities are simply burned or buried in landfill to pollute the air, soil and water.(大量的垃圾被直接焚烧或填埋,污染了空气、土壤和水。)”
