Sports performance can be influenced by many different things. 1)
There are many physical factors (因素) that play a part in sports performance. 2) The
natural talent and strength of the players will make a difference. Also, it is important to get enough
sleep before you are in a sports event. 3) Eating good meals is also important. When you are
hungry, you cannot perform the same. You might be thinking about food when you should be thinking
about the game.
Of course, the more a team or a player practises, the more likely they are to perform well. The
same person with the same physical abilities might just become better as he practises.
Researching your competitor can matter a lot in sports performance. Knowing their strengths and
weaknesses can help you adjust how you play to give yourself a better performance against them. 4)
If you can figure out where to hit the ball in tennis that would confuse your competitor, for example,
then this can help you score points.
5) If someone is very pessimistic about a game, for example, and is sure that he will lose,
then he might increase his chances of doing so. If he is very nervous, then he might be thinking about
that instead of focusing on the game. If he is focused, then he might do better, achieving what he didnt
even realise he could. His confidence can also affect how the other team views him.

B. It is necessary to get to know your competitor and yourself.
C. Also, there are ways to play something smartly and do better.

The modern Olympic Games, founded in 1896, began as contests between individuals, rather than
among nations, with the hope of promoting world peace through sportsmanship. In the beginning, the
games were open only to 1 . An amateur is a person whose involvement in an activity — from sports
to science or the arts — is purely for 2 . Amateurs, whatever their contributions to a field, expect
to receive no form of compensation; professionals, 3 , perform their work in order to earn a living.
From the perspective of many athletes, 4 , the Olympic playing field has been far from fair.
Restricting the Olympics to amateurs has excluded the participation of many who could not afford to be
5 . Countries have always desired to send their best athletes, not their 6 ones, to the Olympic
Games.
A slender and imprecise line separates what we call “ financial support” from “earning money”.
Do athletes “earn money” if they are reimbursed (补偿) for travel expenses? What if they are paid for
time lost at work or if they accept free clothing from a manufacturer or if they teach sports for a living?
The runner Eric Liddell was the son of poor missionaries; in 1924 the British Olympic Committee 7
his trip to the Olympics, where he won a gold and a bronze medal. College scholarships and support
from the United States Olympic Committee made it possible for American track stars Jesse Owens and
Wilma Rudolph and speed skater Dan Jansen to train and compete. When the Soviet Union and its allies
joined the games in 1952, the 8 of amateur became still less clear. Their athletes did not have to
9 work and training because as citizens in communist regimes, their government financial support
was not considered payment for jobs.
In 1971 the International Olympic Committee ( IOC) 10 the word amateur from the rules,
making it easier for athletes to find the 11 necessary to train and compete. In 1986, the IOC
allowed professional athletes into the games.
There are those who 12 the disappearance of amateurism from the Olympic Games. For them
the games 13 something special when they became just another way for athletes to earn money.
Others say that the designation (命名) of amateurism was always 14 ; they argue that all
competitors receive so much financial support as to make them paid professionals. Most agree, however,

A smiling panda and a walking Chinese lantern will be the mascots of the 2022 Winter Olympics
and Paralympics (残奥会) in Beijing.
The mascots were known to the public on Sept. 17, 2019 at a ceremony in Beijing. Beijing Mayor
Chen Jining described them as adorable, unique, and exquisite (精致的). He said they “ show
Chinese peoples longing for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in a visually appealing way and extend
Chinese peoples warm invitation to friends throughout the world”.
The panda, named Bing Dwen Dwen, is the Olympic mascot. Colourful circles around its face
symbolise skating tracks and 5G technology, according to the website of the Beijing organising
committee. Bing, the Chinese word for “ ice”, shows purity and strength, while Dwen Dwen means
sincerity, liveliness, and health. The choice of the iconic animal, considered the national treasure, is
not a surprise to people in China. While many applaud Bing Dwen Dwen for its cuteness on social
media, some are not favourably impressed by the lack of creativity in choosing a panda. The giant panda
was one of the five mascots of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, and it was also the symbol for the
96
Asian Games in Beijing in 1990.
“Today is an important step on a milestone in Beijings journey to make history as the first ever, in
Olympic history, to host both summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games,” International
Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach said at the ceremony.
Based on a traditional red lantern, Paralympic mascot Shuey Rhon Rhon creates a cheerful
atmosphere of the Chinese Lunar New Year, which will fall around the time of the Winter Games,
according to the organising committee. It is sporting (穿戴) a yellow scarf, a circle of yellow doves
around its head, and a traditional Chinese paper⁃cut. “ Shuey” means snow in Chinese and “Rhon
Rhon” means “inclusiveness” and “harmonisation”, implying that the world civilisations communicate
with each other and live in harmony.
The two mascots were selected from more than 5,800 submissions from 35 countries.
1. What does Chen Jining think of Bing Dwen Dwen and Shuey Rhon Rhon?
A. They represent the IOC.
B. They have great artistic value.
C. They show Chinese peoples hospitality.
D. They have much room for improvement.
2. Why are some people not satisfied with choosing Bing Dwen Dwen?
A. Because pandas are the national treasure.
B. Because it is too colourful for the Olympics.
C. Because its design is lacking in creativity.
D. Because the panda has been chosen as a mascot three times.
3. What record will Beijing set after hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics?
A. The most athletes joining in the event.
B. The first Asian city to host the Olympics.
C. The first city to host two editions of the Olympics.
D. The longest time in history.
4. What can we learn about Shuey Rhon Rhon from the text?
A. It is a symbol of Chinese culture.
B. It is designed by a foreign artist.
C. It is a representative of competition.
D. It is a mixture of 35 different cultures.

These Things Shall Never Die
Charles Dickens
The pure, the bright, the beautiful,
That stirred our hearts in youth,
The impulses to wordless prayer,
The dreams of love and truth;
The longing after somethings lost,
The spirits yearning cry,
The striving after better hopes —
These things can never die.
The timid hand stretched forth to aid
A brother in his need,
A kindly word in griefs dark hour
That proves a friend indeed;
The plea for mercy softly breathed,
When justice threatens nigh,
The sorrow of a contrite heart —
These things shall never die.
Let nothing pass for every hand
Must find some work to do;
Lose not a chance to waken love —
Be firm, and just, and true;
So shall a light that cannot fade
Beam on thee from on high.
And angel voices say to thee —
These things shall never die.
这些美好不会消逝
查尔斯·狄更斯
一切纯洁的,辉煌的,美丽的,
强烈地震撼着我们年轻的心灵的,
推动着我们做无言的祷告的,
让我们梦想着爱与真理的;
就足以证明朋友的真心;
轻声地乞求怜悯,
在审判临近的时候,
懊悔的心有一种伤感———
这些美好不会消逝。
在人间传递温情,
尽你所能地去做;
别错失去了唤醒爱的良机———
为人要坚定,正直,忠诚;
因此上方照耀着你的那道光芒
就不会消失。
你将听到天使的声音在说———
这些美好不会消逝。

When I was a young girl, I dreamed of becoming a scientist like Hua Luogeng in future. However, I
knew that I could not succeed without painstaking efforts. So I studied hard in the middle school and
college in order to fulfil my dream.
After graduating from college, I found a job as a teacher. Although I was very busy with teaching, I
never gave up my dream. I read a lot of books to get more knowledge. I made experiments to practise and
apply what I had learnt from the books. Sometimes, I was so deeply indulged in my research that I forgot
my meals.
Now I have made great progress. Several of my research papers have been published. The methods
proposed in my papers have been proven to be valuable for the solution of some problems. I am very
happy. The ladder of becoming a scientist is still far ahead, but I have climbed the first step anyway.

Los Angeles, California is set to welcome more than 7,000 athletes from 177 nations for the Special
Olympics World Summer Games. The event gathers athletes with intellectual disabilities to take part in
competitive sports. The events include basketball, gymnastics, foot races, bowling and many other summer
sports. This years games open on July 25th.
Barbara Figueroa will be there. She is a competitive bowler from southern California. She has been playing
the sport for nine years and is excited about the international competition.
Karen Terra is the Special Olympics director for San Diego. She says bowling practice helps Figueroa and
other athletes stay focused.
“Oh, theyre so excited. In fact, Barbara just told me earlier this morning, she feels like shes won the
lottery. You did win the lottery. Youre one of the 36 people from Southern California who got selected to go to
this, out of 17,000 athletes. That is huge.”
Barbara Figueroa lives with Evelyn Benjamin, who has become like a grandmother. She says she has
watched the athlete improve and shares in Figueroas excitement.
“ I think shes a little overwhelmed. Shes very excited. But I dont think she has any idea yet just how
special this is going to be. I tell her, but until you experience it, the unknown, you can only fantasise.”
Barbara Figueroa says shes ready for Los Angeles.
“ I cannot wait to meet a lot of people in L.A.”
She practises with friends. And she plans to make some new ones from the thousands of athletes in the
games.
011
Karen Terra says competition gives these athletes a sense of accomplishment.
“Sometimes, people with intellectual disabilities are just put off in a corner of a room and told they cant
do things. And with the Special Olympics, we tell them they can do things.”
Eunice Kennedy Shriver established the Special Olympics in 1968. They are held every two years,
alternating between winter and summer sports. South Korea held the most recent World Special Olympics in the
winter of 2013. The most recent summer games were in Athens, Greece in 2011.
Those who know Barbara Figueroa say shes competitive and enthusiastic. And they say she is ready to
show what she can do as a competitive bowler in the Special Olympics.
