The science teacher, Mr. Black, had asked his students to study a particular animal. They were asked to write a short report and then make a 1 in class. Some talked about dogs, others about horses, and some chose fish. But the most 2 discovery of all was made by little Sophie. “I found that 3 are terribly bad⁃tempered,” she said for certain. Everyone smiled, waiting for her to 4 . Then Sophie explained. “ I spent hours 5 flies. When they flew normally, everything was okay, but when they found a window they would make a noisy sound. I had always thought they made that noise 6 their wings, but they didn􀆳t. With my daddy􀆳s binoculars (双筒望远镜), I watched the flies really 7 , and saw that what they were doing was shouting. They were angry because they 8 fly out of the window. Later, a butterfly passing by the window tried to 9 them the top of the window was open, but it had no effect at all. The flies just 10 shouting.” Mr. Black laughed and explained to the class that the flies􀆳 behaviour had nothing to do with 11 . Instead, it was an example of animals having different levels of 12 . At the end of the class, Mr. Black asked the students to bring a list of animals in order of how smart they are. What surprised Mr. Black was that many parents came to the school to 13 the next day, because their children had listed their parents among the least 14 animals! This, said the children, was because their parents did nothing but complain. Mr. Black had to do a lot of explaining to calm the parents down. However, it also helped some of the parents 15 that although they weren􀆳t stupid, they didn􀆳t often behave very intelligently. 1. A. word B. speech C. performance D. wish 2. It􀆳s somewhat difficult to figure out the rules for sure. Here, one bell means “elephant”, two, “rhino” (犀牛), and three and four, I really can􀆳t remember for what, because when you􀆳re awoken by bells in the middle of the night, your first thought won􀆳t be “Animal!”. But as soon as I realised it was the rhino alarm, I was running for the stairs. A baby African buffalo and a baby rhino stood a couple feet apart, staring at each other. Behind them, their mothers were looking on with the kind of indifference of mothers everywhere who see their kids playing a harmless game. Of course, I􀆳m the only one watching the animals stare⁃down. Either everyone else died of a heart attack when the bells went off, or I was the only one in the entire hotel who didn􀆳t turn the alarm switch to off before going to bed. The Ark, a hotel shaped like the biblical ark (圣经的方舟), lies in the highlands of Kenya􀆳s Aberdare National Park, about 100 kilometres north of Nairobi. At the Ark􀆳s prow (船首) are huge windows overlooking a waterhole. Earlier tonight, I􀆳d watched a pack of wolves, buffaloes and elephants. And now, at three or so in the morning, I􀆳m down for rhino bells. The first time, 2.5 hours ago, it was a single black rhino, which came down, got a drink, and left. I􀆳d have been sorry for the lost sleep. I􀆳ve already arranged with a guide to take me out at sunrise for the so⁃called “ should⁃never⁃miss” bird⁃watching, where we􀆳ll get to see 30 species, but really, how many times in your life will you get to wake up and say, “Wow! Rhino!” Isn􀆳t that the definition of a pretty good night? Last week we went from Uganda into Kenya. Before I left home, I thought I􀆳d be happy with ten elephants and five or six giraffes on the whole trip. I didn􀆳t dare to dream the rhino. 1. What was the message sent from the hotel􀆳s bells? A. A sound that was significant for visitors to avoid danger. B. A sound that all visitors had got used to. C. A bell the author found hard to remember in detail. D. An alarm the author did not want to hear. 2. What did the author see at about 3:00 a.m.? A. Rhinos and buffaloes were fighting for water. B. A rhino and a buffalo were staring at each other. C. A buffalo was watching its baby play with rhinos. D. A boat⁃shaped hotel was overlooking a waterhole. 82 3. What can we learn from the passage? A. The author likes all the animals. B. The author only has an interest in rhinos. C. There are various wild animals near the Ark. D. The author didn􀆳t sleep well during the whole trip. 4. What􀆳s probably the author􀆳s attitude towards the bell? A. It should be turned off when it rings. B. It􀆳s bothering but rewarding. C. It is a bad way to wake the guests up. D. It brings visitors a chance to see buffaloes. B When a leafy plant is under attack, it doesn􀆳t sit quietly. Back in 1983, two scientists, Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighbouring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds, VOCs for short. Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked. It􀆳s a plant􀆳s way of crying out. But is anyone listening? Apparently. Because we can watch the neighbours react. Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty. They pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackers. Once they arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch. In study after study, it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbours. The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbours, relatively speaking, stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do. Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists don􀆳t know. Maybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to itself. Perhaps the neighbours just happened to “overhear” the cry. So information was exchanged, but it wasn􀆳t a true, intentional back and forth. Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate (亲 密的) than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. There􀆳s a whole lot going on. 5. What does a plant do when it is under attack? A. It makes noises. B. It gets help from other plants. C. It stands quietly. D. It sends out certain chemicals. 92 6. What does the author mean by “the tables are turned” in Paragraph 3? A. The attackers get attacked. B. The insects gather under the table. C. The plants get ready to fight back. D. The perfumes attract natural enemies. 7. What can plants do according to the studies of scientists? A. Predict natural disasters. B. Protect themselves against insects. C. Talk to one another intentionally. D. Help their neighbours when necessary. 8. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The world is changing faster than ever. B. The world is more complex than it seems. C. People have stronger senses than before. D. People in Darwin􀆳s time were more imaginative. Write a passage about wildlife protection. Step 1: Introduce the dangers faced by wild animals. Step 2: Find out three ways to deal with the problem. Step 3: Call on others to take part in the protection. Accumulating Recommendation. Do the tears of animals mean they are crying? All animals with mobile eyes are equipped with a tearing system that keeps their eyes lubricated, protecting their eyes from the elements and so on. So there is a saying goes, “ to shed crocodile tears” which means to cry when someone is not really sad or sorry. 03 People tell tales of animals such as elephants and dogs weeping when punished. However, even if such an animal does shed tears, there is no scientific evidence that the animal is expressing emotion in doing so. But what about when a baby chimp or ape whimpers and screams as it􀆳s being separated from its mother, couldn􀆳t we say with some certainty that the animal is crying? While this display does attract caregiving from the mother, pushing her to feed or protect the baby, it is less clear that what the baby is feeling is similar to what a human feels when he or she cries. My contribution. 13 5. raises 6. have been set Ⅲ. 1. The concert given by their friends was a big success. 2. It was Li Hua who broke the cup just now. 3. Ⅳ. A. 1—4 BDBC B. (for reference) Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared. Then out of the box jumped a small mass of golden woolen thing, shouting loudly and joyfully, as if he was asking why he couldn􀆳t see the sunshine for such a long time. Finding that she had a playmate again, Poppy was amazed. She appreciated her new little playmate, smiling amusedly, barking gently, walking slowly around it and wagging her tail cheerfully and constantly. “ I don􀆳t have to be lonely any more!” thought Poppy to herself with satisfaction. “But if only my master were at home!” A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university. He had missed Poppy and was looking forward to seeing her. Upon arriving at the door of his home, he was surprised to discover that it was two dogs that were greeting him, the old dog giving him a big hug and licking him while the little dog watching him curiously. Despite the chill autumn wind, their home was filled with the warmth of love and reunion. (for reference) Wild animals are man􀆳s close friends. They not only provide us with fun but also play a key role in keeping the balance of nature. Unfortunately, they are being over⁃hunted, and some species are dying out. If it goes on like this, man is to be punished. In order to stay away from the seemingly faraway disaster, man has to do something. First, effective laws must be passed to give the illegal hunters proper punishment. Second, we must set up nature reserves to provide the animals with comfortable habitats. Third, people􀆳s awareness of environment protection should be raised to a higher level. Only in this way can we achieve a harmonious relationship with wildlife. Therefore, it is high time we took immediate action. 101
