From a Tampa performing arts conservatory comes the story of a blind jazz saxophonist who uses his disability as a teaching tool. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi, he encourages his students to act on instinct (直觉); to feel the music through their instruments, and not let the waking world deceive them. “Welcome to every day of my life,” says Matthew Weihmuller in his jazz improvisation (即兴演奏) class after turning the lights off.
Weihmuller teaches jazz advanced, basic, and improv at the Patel Conservatory in Tampa. When Weihmuller started playing, he needed braille (布莱叶盲文) sheet music, and pieces would take months, even years to learn. As if that weren’t difficult enough, few people in the country were capable of providing braille music, so he started “brailling” his own, with the help of his mom—all the way through college. “They can’t look at their instrument. Now, they have to feel their instrument with their fingers and hands, right?” Weihmuller said. “Now, we’ve got to listen to the music. We can’t read it... it forces the students to use their other senses.”
Advanced jazz musicians will understand that during improvisational sessions, a musician has to be ready for sudden changes in time signature or key. This is nearly impossible to express through sheet music. At least in this regard, the children are learning in the best way for this unconventional, yet traditional form of jazz music. As an educator with blindness, Weihmuller stresses turning any disadvantage into an advantage, a teaching philosophy that has led some students to tell the man that he has changed the way they look at life.
“It’s everything for me, as an educator to hear someone say that you changed their life,” he states. “It’s awe-inspiring and I hope that I can inspire others who are dealing with their situations, disabilities, barriers, and challenges in the same way that I have.”
24. What does the underlined word “deceive” probably mean in the first paragraph?
A. Abandon. B. Suspect. C. Mislead. D. Humble.
25. How does Weihmuller teach his students jazz?
A. By training them with all the lights off.
B. By inspiring them to use multiple senses.
C. By getting them involved in improvisation.
D. By providing them with braille music sheet.
26. Which of the following can best describe Weihmuller?
A. Optimistic and humorous. B. Realistic and easygoing.
C. Hardworking and creative. D. Adventurous and tolerant.
27. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The growth process of a blind musician.
B. Teaching philosophy of a blind teacher.
C. Braille music created by a jazz musician.
D. The success of a musician’s improvisation.

Trillions of evolution’s wonders, red-eyed periodical cicadas (蝉) that have pumps in their heads and jet-like muscles in their bodies, are about to emerge in numbers not seen in decades and possibly centuries. Crawling out from underground every 13 or 17 years, with a collective song as loud as jet engines, the periodical cicadas are nature’s kings of the calendar. These black bugs with bulging eyes differ from their greener cousins that come out annually. They stay buried year after year, until they surface and take over a landscape.
This spring, an unusual cicada double population is about to invade a couple of parts of the United States in what University of Connecticut cicada expert John Cooley called “cicada-geddon”. The last time these two broods (a group of creatures) came out together was in 1803. Thomas Jefferson, the then president, wrote about cicadas in his Garden Book but mistakenly called them locusts(蝗虫). Usually mistaken for hungry and unrelated locusts, periodical cicadas are more annoying rather than causing great economic damage. They can hurt young trees and some fruit crops, but it’s not widespread and can be prevented.
The largest geographic brood in the nation—called Brood XIX and coming out every 13 years—is about to march through the Southeast, having already created countless boreholes in the red Georgia clay. It’s a sure sign of the coming cicada occupation. “They emerge when the ground warms to 64 degrees, which is happening earlier than it used to because of climate change,” scientists said. “The bugs are brown at first but darken as they mature.”
Soon after the insects appear in large numbers in Georgia and the rest of the Southeast, cicada cousins that come out every 17 years will inundate Illinois. They are Brood Ⅷ. “And when you put those two together ... you would have more than anywhere else any other time,” University of Maryland entomologist Paula Shrewsbury said. “These two broods may actually overlap—but probably not interbreed—in a small area near central Illinois.”
28.How are periodical cicadas different from their greener cousins?
A. They appear once a year. B.They look more beautiful.
C. They have stronger muscles. D. They have a longer life circle.
29. What is a common belief on periodical cicadas?
A. They are a type of locusts.
B. They have underestimated advanced advantages.
C. They are Thomas Jefferson’s inspiration.
D. They only eat young trees and fruit crops.
30. What can be inferred about Brood XIX?
A. The red Georgia clay is more beneficial to them.
B. Climate change may be confusing their schedules.
C. The adult ones only live 4-6 weeks before they die.
D. They are expected to be found throughout the world.
31. What can best replace the underlined word “inundate” in the last paragraph?
A. strike out B. give up C. flood into D. jump at

A remarkable new study on how whales behaved when attacked by humans in the 19th century has implications for the way they react to changes caused by humans in the 21st century.
The paper is authored by Whitehead and Rendellt at Dalhousie University and their research addresses an age-old question: if whales are so smart, why did they hang around to be killed? The answer? They didn’t.
Using newly digitised (数字化的) logbooks detailing the hunting of whales in the north Pacific, the authors discovered that within just a few years, the strike rate of the whalers’ harpoons (捕鲸者的鱼叉) fell by 58%. This simple fact leads to an astonishing conclusion: that information about what was happening to them was being collectively shared among the whales, who made vital changes to their behaviour. They learned quickly from their mistakes.
“Sperm whales have a traditional way of reacting to attacks from orca (杀人鲸),” notes Whitehead. Before humans, orca were their only predators (捕食者), against whom sperm whales form defensive circles, their powerful tails held outwards to keep predators at bay. “But such techniques just made it easier for the whalers to kill them, ” says Whitehead.
Sperm whales are highly socialised animals, able to communicate over great distances. Information about the new dangers may have been passed on in the same way they share knowledge about feeding grounds. They also possess the largest brain on the planet. It is not hard to imagine that they understood what was happening to them.
The hunters themselves realised the whales’ efforts to escape. They saw that the animals appeared to communicate the threat within their attacked groups. Abandoning their usual defensive formations, the whales swam upwind to escape the hunters’ ships, themselves wind-powered.
Now, just as whales are beginning to recover from the industrial destruction by 20th-century whaling fleets, whose steamships and grenade harpoons no whale could escape from, they face new threats created by our technology. “They’re having to learn not to get hit by ships, cope with the depredations (劫掠) of longline fishing, the changing source of their food due to climate change,” Whitehead says. “The same sort of urgent social learning the animals experienced in the whale wars of two centuries ago is reflected in the way they negotiate today’s uncertain world.”
32. What is the new study mainly about?
A. Whales’ social lives.
B. Whales’ emotional intelligence.
C. Whales’ reaction to climate changes.
D. Whales’ behavior under human attack.
33. What caused whales to make changes to escape the hunters’ ships?
A. The wind in their favour.
B. Their powerful physical strength.
C. The shared ship attack information.
D. Their usual defensive formations.
34. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 5?
A. State possible reasons.
B. Add background information.
C. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
35. What’s Whitehead’s attitude towards whales’ future survival?
A. Pessimistic. B. Unclear. C. Cautious. D. Optimistic.

I was always afraid of water. This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻) . I would imagine myself drowning in the water and thrashing around(乱扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming lessons in school, which made me tremble.
Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps(圈) effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at this rate?
In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with disdain (鄙视) especially when I thrashed about hopelessly in the water.
Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim?” She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope flashed within me, a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior(外表) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my own fears?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence.
“Congratulations!” Kathy said when she learnt I had passed the swimming test.

参考范文:
Tomy surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence. From then on, Kathy stayed back for about an hour after every swimming lesson to coach me. She taught me how to propel myself forward in the water and I gradually gained confidence in the pool. Slowly but surely, I improved under her guidance and encouragement. Four months later, it was time for me to take my swimming test. I jumped into the pool and followed all of Kathy’s advice. I swam gracefully, just like a fish, and passed the test with flying colours.
“Congratulations!” Kathy said when she learnt I had passed the swimming test. I threw my arms around her and hugged her tightly. “Thank you! You’re a wonderful friend! If it had not been for you, I would not have done so well!” I exclaimed. Since then, our friendship has blossomed. We met frequently to have fun with each other, sharing both joy and sorrow. Surprisingly, I grew to love the water. A friend like Kathy is hard to come by. She has a heart of gold and I will definitely treasure our precious friendship.

W: Well, I’ve helped my dad with some of his projects. But, I decided I wanted to do my own project this time. So I researched ideas on the Internet. I decided on a bicycle generator because it’s really useful. I can use it to power my computer.
M: So, how did you build it?
W: First, I found plans for generators. I chose a simple design and made a first draft of the project. Then, my dad made some suggestions and I made another draft. After that, I started to look for materials. The only problem was that I didn’t have a lot of money, so it was difficult!
M: So, what did you do?
W: Well, I went to a bicycle shop and a car repair shop. I told them about my project. They gave me some extra parts.
M: Oh, that was nice.
W: Yeah, it really was … When I got all the materials, I was ready to put it all together.
M: Well, I think it’s great. Very impressive!

M: OK, are you all settled? Well, first of all, welcome to Cardiff University. I’m here to explain what we can offer you.
Now, as a new student at the university, you will probably need some sort of guidance to help you to use the library effectively to study and research. Some of you have asked about a guided tour but we find this rather confuses people. So, in this first week, we run a series of talks which focus on different aspects of the library and its resources.
OK, now let me give you an outline of what’s available to you. You’ll find that the computers are increasingly used as a research tool. Many students do most of their research on the Internet and the library computers are permanently online. Having found what you need, you’ll find you can readily save texts on your personal computer space to print off when you need.
Naturally we do still have the full range of classic reference books for you to use and there are several copies of each one. This is because some of you may prefer to borrow a book rather than sit in the library. There is a restricted loan time on these so that they are not missing from the shelves for too long. Although there is a Section Manager for each part of the library, they are very busy and so, if you do get stuck looking for things, you should ask the relevant Cataloguing Assistant. As your Training Supervisor, I just oversee your work for a week and will not be around after this initial week.
