In countries where most schools require students to wear uniforms, fewer young people reach the World Health Organization’s minimum recommendation of 60 minutes of physical activity a day across a whole week, according to a study by the University of Cambridge.
There was a greater difference between girls and boys of primary-school age in countries where uniforms were common. The finding was not copied among children of secondary-school age. This may be owing to the exercise younger children get throughout the day — for example, through running, climbing and active play at break and lunchtimes. The findings confirm earlier evidence that girls feel less comfortable participating in active play if they are wearing certain types of clothing such as skirts or dresses.
Dr. Mairead Ryan, a researcher at the institute of education and MRC unit at Cambridge, said, “ Schools often prefer to use uniforms for various reasons. We are not trying to suggest a blanket ban on them, but to present new evidence to support decision-making. School communities could consider design, and whether specific characteristics of a uniform might either encourage or restrict any opportunities for physical activity.”
A 2021 study in England found the design of girls’ PE uniforms prevented students from participating in certain activities. Other studies have suggested girls are much shyer about taking part in physical activity when wearing uniforms in which they do not feel comfortable. Dr. Esther van Sluijs, senior author and MRC investigator (调查员), said, “Girls might feel less confident about doing things like cartwheels and tumbles in the playground, or riding a bike on a windy day if they are wearing a skirt or dress. Social expectations tend to influence what they feel they can do in these clothes. Unfortunately, when it comes to promoting physical health, that’s a problem.”
The WHO recommends that young people get 60 minutes of at least moderate-intensity (中等强度) physical activity a day. The Cambridge study confirmed previous observations that most children and teenagers were not meeting this recommendation — especially girls, who have a gap of 7.6 percentage points with boys.
4.What is the author’s purpose of writing Paragraph 1?
A.To state the findings. B.To make a comparison.
C.To explain a phenomenon. D.To justify an assumption.
5.Why do girl students feel less convenient in some uniforms?
A.They have less physical activity daily.
B.They have much labor work at school.
C.Certain uniforms limit their physical activity.
D.Certain uniforms make them act well in active play.
6.What does Dr. Mairead Ryan probably agree with?
A.It’s better to restrict physical activity.
B.It’s better to support decision-making.
C.Uniforms should be banned strictly in schools.
D.Schools should think about the uniform design.
7.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Proper uniforms can set students free
B.Schools are responsible for uniforms
C.Students can benefit a lot from uniforms
D.Uniforms may prevent younger girls from being active
(23-24高二上·江苏常州·期末)In the Commonwealth Games England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate Olympics teams, unlike the Olympics where they compete together as Britain.
What are the Commonwealth Games?
The Commonwealth Games are held every four years between members of the Commonwealth of Nations—a group of independent countries, most of which used to be part of the Britain. The Games were first held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. The event was named the Commonwealth Games in 1978.
The history of the Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games have been held every four years since they started and have grown much bigger. At the first Commonwealth Games, only 11 nations and 400 athletes were involved in six sports. For a long time, the Games only included individual sports such as athletics, boxing and swimming. In 1998, team sports such as cricket, hockey and netball were introduced. The Commonwealth Games have featured many fantastic feats and the athletes have broken a wide range of records.
Paralympic progress
At the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, Canadian athlete Chantal Petitclerc became the first athlete with a disability to win a gold medal in the wheelchair 800-meter race. She said, “It meant so much to me that the Commonwealth Games decided that a performance is a performance-and it doesn’t matter if you accomplish it in a wheelchair. Paralympic athletes continue to take part in the Commonwealth Cames’ main sports programs, and many have broken records and made history.
8.Which countries take part in the Commonwealth Games?
A.Independent countries. B.Members of the Commonwealth of Nations.
C.The former members of the Britain. D.All the countries from around the world.
9.How many sports were there at the first Commonwealth Games?
A.11. B.4. C.6. D.400.
10.Why do Paralympic athletes compete in the Commonwealth Games?
A.To make historic records. B.To enjoy sports programs with other athletes.
C.To show their disabilities. D.To prove themselves with good performance.
(23-24高二上·江苏扬州·期中)There is no benefit to doing more than five hours of high-intensity (高强度) exercise a week, a Harvard study has found, as it does not help to stave off an early death. However, pushing your body as hard as you can does not have any damaging health effects.
A 30-year Harvard study of 100,000 Americans looked at how exercise impacted a person’s risk of death. It found that doing 75 minutes of intense exercise a week, the recommended amount, reduces the risk of dying from disease by 31 percent. People who do twice this—two and a half hours of intense exercise a week—see slightly greater benefits, further reducing the threat of death by four percent. However, fitness enthusiasts who do more than four times the recommended amount of intense exercise every week—five hours—do not get any additional benefit.
The same trend is seen for moderate (适度的) activities, including walking. Ten hours of moderate exercise—four times the recommended weekly activity level—has no benefits, but also no harms.
Previous research had claimed that doing too much exercise could be harmful and may actually increase a person’s risk of early death by putting added pressure on their body. But the new study found that to be untrue, as even people doing more than five hours a week of intense activity showed no bad health effects.
“This finding may reduce the concerns around the potentially harmful effect of engaging in high levels of physical activity observed in several previous studies,” noted Hoon Lee, a study author. “Our study provides evidence to guide individuals to choose the right amount and intensity of physical activity over their lifetime to maintain their overall health.”
11.What does the underlined part “stave off ” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Approach. B.Cause. C.Prevent. D.Record.

B.2.5 hours of it weekly can reduce death risk by 35%.
C.5 hours of it weekly can have harmful effects on health.
D.The recommended amount produces the greatest benefit.
13.What do we know about the new study?
A.It links heart disease to early death.
B.It disagrees with previous research.
C.It needs further research on more individuals.
D.It needs involvement with more kinds of exercise.
14.What did Hoon Lee suggest people do?
A.Exercise properly.
B.Go on a diet to stay healthy.
C.Go outdoors as much as possible.
D.Engage in high levels of physical activity.
(23-24高二上·江苏常州·期中)Even if you haven’t tried Pamela’s workouts, her name likely rings a bell -the German-born model is one of the world’s most popular fitness influencers. Lately, she’s been trying out something new: Baduanjin, a traditional Chinese fitness exercise, originally created over 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. The name generally refers to how the eight individual movements characterize and give a silken quality to the movement of the body and its energy.
Baduanjin used to be popular mainly among older Chinese folks, but young people are now also getting into it. No equipment is necessary and it requires very little space or, perhaps most importantly in our fast-paced lives, time. In fact, it’s perfect for office workers, as they often suffer from lower back pain caused by hours sitting in front of the computer.

At the Hangzhou Asian Games, Xiangqi (Chinese chess) grandmaster Zuo Wenjing spent five days at the Asiad fighting through seven rounds in the women’s individual competition to take her second gold at the Games at the Hangzhou Qi-Yuan Chess Hall on Saturday after claiming the top spot in the mixed team event on Oct. 1.
Born in 1993 in Zibo city in China’s Shandong province, Zuo was diagnosed (诊断) with the condition that causes dwarfism (侏儒症) at age 3. Her parents encouraged her to learn piano, painting and singing before she took up Xiangqi in 2001. At first, her father taught her in the discipline and even quit his job as a factory head to focus on training her. In 2003, at age 10, she became Zibo’s Xiangqi champion. Her family then moved to Wuhan, in Central China’s Hubei province, so that she could study under higher-level masters there.
Under the guidance of coaches Zhou Yi and Li Zhiping, Zuo took the No.1 national spot in 2005, which brought her to the attention of grandmaster Liu Dahua, known as the “Oriental Computer” for his ability to memorize and recall Xiangqi games and moves and, consequently, play blindfolded. At Liu’s recommendation, Zuo became the youngest signed athlete in Hubei’s provincial-level chess academy at age 12. And she has continued to progress, earning the master title in 2006 and becoming a grandmaster in 2022 after winning the women’s individual event at the 17th World Xiangqi Championships.
Zuo said she owes her two golds at the Hangzhou Games and her previous success to her parents’ encouragement following her childhood diagnosis.

(2024高二下·湖南娄底·学业考试)Agassi was very emotional at the end of his final game. On September 3, the American tennis player said a tearful goodbye to his 21-year career after a third-round defeat in the US Open. The 36-year-old tried his best, but was unable to keep up with German Benjamin Becker, more than ten years his junior.
"The scoreboard said I lost today, but what the scoreboard doesn't say is what I've found," Agassi said to the fans. "I have found inspiration and you willed me to succeed." It was an emotional speech at the end of a long career. Agassi hated tennis as a teenager as much as he loves it now. His father made him play when he was a child. He got bored, and became a rebel(叛逆者). The strict training that his father pushed upon him got in the way of his wild lifestyle.
Asked what he would say to his 17-year-old self, Agassi answered, "I would say, I understand you a lot more than I want to be you."
The turning point in Agassi's career came in 1992 when he unexpectedly won his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon. It was the first time Agassi understood what real champions finally understand: winning is a test of nerves and not just power; it's a marathon, not a sprint(短跑).
Agassi was about to begin a marathon. He cut his long hair, got fitter and tightened up emotionally. On the court, he was ranked No. 1 for almost two years. His lowest point came in 1997 when his ranking dropped to No. 141. He didn't quit though. "I knew that I would try to get the most out of myself every day from that day forward. That was my promise," he said. "That never stopped."
27.Why was Agassi very emotional when saying goodbye to his career?
A.Because he lost to an older player.
B.Because this career has brought him so much.
C.Because he felt sad for the best player.
D.Because he felt sorry for his lifestyle.
28.From his speech, we can see that ______.
A.he was thankful to his fans B.he refused to accept failure
C.he wished he hadn't hated tennis D.he decided to run a marathon
29.Through wınning, Agassi learned that ______.
A.he didn't try his best in his career B.it took a long time for anyone to win
C.people need to never give up to win D.winning once or twice is not enough
30.It can be inferred from the passage that Agassi's father ______.
A.was an excellent tennis player B.was good at raising Agassi
C.spent most of his time training his son D.played a key role in his tennis career
(23-24高二下·贵州·期中)A recent study suggests that for young soccer players, participating in repetitive technical training activities involving heading during practice may result in more total head impacts, but playing in actual soccer games may cause greater magnitude (程度) head impacts.
“Headers are a fundamental component to the sport of soccer. Therefore, it is important to understand differences in header frequency and magnitude between practice and game settings,” said study author Jillian Urban, PhD, from Wake Forest School of Medicine. “Practices are easier to change than games. Therefore, understanding how we can restructure practice to reduce head impact exposure while teaching fundamental skills is critical to improving head impact safety in the sport.”
The study followed eight soccer players who were aged 14 and 15 for two seasons. Players wore a sensor (传感器) during all practices and games. Researchers recorded all activities on the field with a camera, and identified each time head contact was made.
Head impact exposure was evaluated in terms of peak head motion and impacts, or impact rate per player per hour. Researchers then compared impact rates across different activity types.
Researchers amazingly found that technical drills like heading the ball and practicing ball-control, were associated with an average impact rate of 13.7 head impacts per player per hour. Team interaction activities such as small-sided games in practice were related to an average impact rate of 0.5 head impacts per player per hour, which was slightly lower than the 1.3 head impacts observed during actual games.
The study also revealed that games were associated with the highest numbers of average rotational (旋转) head motion, which signified the greatest magnitude head impacts. However, technical training recorded the lowest numbers.
“If the goal is to reduce the number of head impacts a young soccer player may get on the field, our findings suggest the best way may be to rearrange technical training practices,” said Urban. “However, if the goal is to reduce the likelihood of players sustaining head impacts of greater magnitude, then the best bet may be to look at factors related to high-magnitude head impacts that can occur during games.” A limitation of the study is the small number of players involved.
31.Why is restructuring practice critical to improving safety?
A.Because it’s easier to make improvements in practices than in games.
B.Because headers are an essential component to the sport of soccer.
C.Because head impacts during practice are much more serious.
D.Because high-magnitude head impacts in games are unavoidable.
32.Which activity has the highest average impact rate?
A.Small-sided games in practice. B.Technical training activities.
C.Team interaction activities. D.Actual soccer games.
33.What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientific study?
A.Critical. B.Skeptical. C.Objective. D.Supportive.
34.What is the text mainly about?
A.Head impacts in training activities and games of soccer.
B.Risks that young soccer players may face on the field.
C.The importance of head impact safety in soccer game.
D.How head impact in different activity types is evaluated.
