What if you could experience music in your body, rather than hear it through your ears? That’s the idea behind Patrick Hanlon’s magic vests, which allow concertgoers who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music. A magic vest is a wearable device that allows its user to experience touch through force, vibration and movement.
Hanlon is a co-founder of Music: Not Impossible, an arm of Not Impossible Labs. This group creates and uses tech to try to transcend social barriers, including those around disability. Magic vests will promote inclusivity at live music performances.
Previous methods that deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals would use to enjoy live music included putting their hands on speakers. They could also hold a balloon to feel vibrations on their fingertips. The vests aim to allow for a totally new experience. Hanlon says that nobody expects that using the vests will be so engaging, and “when you see it in people’s eyes, it’s magical. ”
Jay Zimmerman, a composer whose ability to hear was damaged, says the vests are an example of new technology offering more exciting flexibility than before. He hopes that soon these inventions will allow deaf kids to have experiences with real vibrations.
The vests are not limited to any particular type of music. Hanlon explained the vibration points can even be adjusted to fit a show’s overall atmosphere. The vests have been used at concerts for rock band Greta Van Fleet and pop star Lady Gaga.
8.What is the purpose of Patrick Hanlon’s magic vests?
A.To perfectly fit a concert’s overall atmosphere.
B.To help people with hearing problems feel music better.
C.To provide better seating options at live music events.
D.To replace traditional speakers at music concerts.
9.How do the vests allow users to experience different musical elements?
A.By putting hands on speakers. B.By holding a balloon.
C.By engaging in magic. D.By feeling force, vibration and movement.
10.What does the underlined word “transcend” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.Get over. B.Cure of. C.Tear up. D.Account for.
11.Where might the text be taken from?
A.A musical comedy. B.A science magazine.
C.A concert advertisement. D.A research report.

Scientists have crafted a novel substance derived from the collagen protein found in pig skin, which closely mimics the structure of the human cornea. This breakthrough has already restored vision to 20 individuals, offering a beacon of hope for those afflicted with corneal blindness.
Approximately 12.7 million individuals globally are visually impaired or blind due to corneal damage or disease. The conventional solution for vision restoration is a corneal transplant from a human donor. However, the odds of receiving such a transplant are slim, with only one in 70 patients benefiting from this procedure. Moreover, the majority of these patients reside in nations with lower to middle incomes, where access to such treatments is severely restricted.
To counteract the limitations inherent in traditional corneal treatments, researchers have harnessed the collagen protein from pig skin. "We can create a biocompatible material that fulfills all the requirements for human implantation, capable of being produced in large quantities to aid a broader spectrum of individuals facing vision impairment," stated Professor Neil Lagali. Unlike donated corneas, which have a short shelf life of two weeks, these bioengineered corneas can be preserved for up to two years, enhancing their practicality. The pig skin, a byproduct of the food industry, is readily available, further simplifying the process.
Innovative surgical techniques have been developed in tandem with this material, eliminating the need for sutures in the procedure. In an initial trial, 14 out of the 20 subjects were completely blind prior to the surgery. Remarkably, after a period of two years, all patients experienced a return of their sight. Among them, three Indian participants who had been blind achieved full visual acuity post-operation.
The research team is eager to explore the potential applications of this technology for treating a wider array of eye conditions and is investigating the possibility of customizing the implants to individual patients, thereby increasing their efficacy even further.
12.What is the disadvantage of traditional cornea treatment?
A.Serious side effects. B.Low availability rate.
C.Poor medical equipment. D.Complicated surgical process.
13.What do we know about the biomaterial?
A.It has higher production costs.
B.It can be stored for much longer.
C.It is able to be used for several times.
D.It can help people prevent vision problems.
14.Which of the following best describes the new surgical method?
A.Successful. B.Ineffective. C.Convenient. D.Controversial.
15.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To spread knowledge about cornea donation.
B.To show the difficulties of treating blindness.
C.To call on people to protect their eyes properly.
D.To present a new breakthrough in the medical field.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
5G will be the lifeblood of the new economy. Selfdriving cars, virtual reality, smart cities and networked robots will all be powered by 5G networks.
Like every “next generation” wireless network technology, 5G will give your phone a speedier connection — up to 100 times faster than 4G. 16 On 4G, it would take six minutes. 5G’s extra bandwidth will make service more reliable, allowing more devices to connect to the network at the same time.
17 Sensors, computers, cars, robots, and other new technology will all connect to 5G one day. Today’s 4G networks don’t have the bandwidth for the vast amounts of data all those devices will transmit.
To accomplish all that, much of the 5G network will travel over superhighfrequency airwaves. These higher frequencies bring faster speeds and more bandwidth. 18 That means wireless companies will need to install thousands — perhaps millions — of small cell towers on top of lamp posts, on the side of buildings and inside homes.
19 In buildings and in crowded areas, 5G might provide a speed boost, but 4G will still be used to cover wider areas for the time being.
5G networks will also reduce to virtually zero the latency (延迟), or lag time, between devices and the servers they communicate with. Zero latency can allow selfdriving cars to process all the information they need to make lifeordeath decisions in the blink of an eye. 20 Those innovations will only be possible if the communication between a network and a device is seamless (无缝的).
A.5G will open the door to the future.
B.That’s why 5G will not completely replace 4G.
C.But 5G is about much more than smartphones.
D.That’s enough to download a 3D movie in 3 seconds.
E.5G is more than faster speeds and faster connections indeed.
F.But they can’t travel through walls and they get weaker over long distances.
G.It’s believed that 5G could help power the next generation of longdistance operations.

Jim was walking down a dimly lit street late in the evening, hoping to see his lovely children as soon as possible. As he was walking quietly, Jim heard muffled (沉闷的) screams coming from behind some bushes. Alarmed (惊慌的), Jim stopped to listen carefully. He realized that what he was hearing was the unmistakable (清楚明白的) sound of a struggle. Thinking of the danger, he became frightened.
Only yards from where Jim stood, a girl was being attacked. Jim didn’t know what to do. Should he get involved in it? He was worried about his own safety. He was wondering whether he should just run to the nearest phone box and call the police or go to fight with the attacker (攻击者) to save the unknown girl.
As he suffered from inward struggles, the girl’s cries were growing weaker. Jim knew he had to act fast. Yet he knew he couldn’t just walk away from this. He realized that he could not turn his back on the fate (命运) of this unknown girl, even if it meant risking his own life.
Jim was not a brave man, nor was he athletic (健壮的). Even he himself didn’t quite know where he found the moral courage and physical strength. However, once he was determined to help the girl, he became strangely transformed (转变). He ran behind the bushes and pulled the attacker off the girl, who panicked very much. Seeing Jim prevent him, the attacker became crazy and began to fight with him. Jim became fearless and then fell to the ground, where they wrestled (摔跤) for a few minutes until the attacker jumped up and escaped. Jim felt very tired and he couldn’t catch the attacker.

46.Dear Past Ben,
Hi! I’m Ben, your future self! I know that you are really worried about your future career, so I wanted to write this letter to put your mind at rest.
On the one hand, in the future, computers will be incredibly smart, so they can help you — a chef working at a fancy restaurant a lot. You will mix and cook virtual ingredients on a virtual screen while a robot will do all the real work for you.
On the other hand, computers will still lack creativity. They cannot come up with recipes for new and exciting dishes, so you need to create new dishes by yourself, which will be your main work. In fact it imposes higher requirements on chefs. You will have to be very creative and keep trying.
All in all, I think you will be happy with your future job, because we both like to eat! So stop worrying. Your future will be great. Trust me!
Best regards,
Future Ben

Watching the attacker run into the darkness, Jim thought of the girl. Breathing hard, Jim rose from the ground and walked towards her. The girl was sitting behind the bushes, sobbing. Although in the darkness Jim could hardly see the girl clearly, he could certainly sense her trembling with fear. Not wanting to frighten the girl further, Jim at first spoke to her from a distance. Jim said soothingly that the attacker had run away and she was safe. There was a long pause and then he heard some words from the girl.
“Dad, is that you?” asked the girl in wonder and amazement as she walked from behind the bushes. To Jim’s shock, there stood Jim’s youngest daughter, who began crying. Hugging his daughter, Jim also cried. After the police arrived, they told them something about the attacker in detail. He felt it was a right decision to rush to fight with the attacker. Now in his daughter’s eyes, Jim is a brave man and a hero without fearing any danger.
