Passage C
As a child, whenever you have a problem, you are most likely to turn to your family members or friends to ask for help. But when you grow up, you should learn how to do things on your own, because a part of being an adult is to master certain basic life skills. However, it turns out that many kids, even adults are gradually losing these skills. Whether it’s tying their shoes, learning to ride a bike or learning to swim, they all have a little trouble in mastering some certain important life skills. Nowadays, some children don’t know how to deal with the trouble they meet. When in trouble, they ask their parents for help right away. In this way, they can’t form their own independence (独立性).
Why do children lose their ability of independence? One reason is that parents care about them too much. Many parents often pay more attention to children’s study, while easily forget the importance of children’s independence. They try every way to help them and even don’t let them do any housework. Once the children leaves the family, they won’t have the ability to take care of themselves or tackle the problems.
In fact, every child has a strong sense of independence. When they can independently complete a thing, they will be very proud and happy. So parents should give their children support and encouragement. While schools can provide more chances for students to attend competitions, social activities or volunteer jobs, parents and schools can also teach them some basic life skills according to their age, like cooking, washing and cleaning.
The child is a member of the family, and they should take the responsibility to do some housework. This can not only develop their independence, but also improve the sense of be-longing.
51. What is a part of being an adult?
A. To learn how to manage time. B. To master some basic life skills.
C. To know how to ask for help. D. To have a clear goal.
52. What’s the result if children always ask their parents for help when in trouble?
A. Their parents will be tired of that.
B. Their parents will teach them some skills.
C. They can’t develop the ability of independence.
D. They will face more challenges in the future.
53. Which question can help us find out the writer’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2 best?
A. Did the writer show the importance of independence?
B. Did the writer provide some advice for parents?
C. Did the writer add some background information?
D. Did the writer tell the reason for losing children’s independence?
54. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “tackle”?
A. Solve. B. Burn. C. Harm. D. Spread.
55. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The experts’ opinions on independence. B. The methods of overcoming difficulties.
C The results of a survey about children. D. The importance of independence for children.
Ⅸ. Task-based Reading. (2*5=10)
In the class meeting, Mr. Wang drew a picture of a man standing in the middle of a circle. To make it more interesting, he drew things like a house, a car and a few friends inside the circle.
He asked us, “Can anyone tell me what this is?” Li Lin said, “The world?” Mr. Wang said, “That’s close. This is your comfort zone (区域). Inside your circle you have all the things that are important to you—your home, your family, your friends, and your job. People feel that inside this circle they are safe. Can anyone tell me what happens when you step out of this circle?” Mr. Wang then drew an arrow (箭头) pointing from the man to the outside of the circle. He went on saying, “Outside your comfort zone, you will face the world that you are not comfortable with. The result is that you will learn something that you do not know and get more than what you have.” He then drew a bigger circle around the first circle, and added a few new things like more friends and so on.
The story tells us that if you stay inside your comfort zone, you will never be able to learn more. When you go out of your comfort zone, perhaps you will be afraid. Challenge your mind and you can grow to be stronger and better.
