Late one autumn day at the aquatic center in Ancenis,France, something went quietly,
horribly wrong.An 18-year-old named Jean-Francois LeRoy was a regular,coming often in the
early evenings to swim in the 25-meter pool.Drownings are oftep difficult (1)

Most are near-silent incidents (2)

particular day maybe the lifeguards weren't paying as close attention as they (3)

But on this evening LeRoy was practicing apnea (swimming-testing

After one night in the local hospital,he was released with no permanent damage.Poseidon had
saved his life.

Zheng Secures Historic Tennis Gold for China
China's women's ace Zheng Oinwen has etched her name in tennis history after winning the
country's first singles Olympic gold medal in Paris on Saturday,(11)her meteoric career
rise with another major accolade(荣誉),
China's world No.7 Zheng was the sixth (12)in the 64-draw Olympic tournament.
She lived up to her favorite status in the final against Donna Vekic of Croatia at the Roland Garros
Stadium, breaking her 2lst-ranked (13)four times while conceding only one ofher service
games to prevail 6-2,6-3 at the iconic site of the red clay Grand Slam to win the gold medal.
It was only China's second Olympic gold medal in tennis, following a women's doubles title
won by Li Ting and Sun Tiantian at Athens 2004,and the first in singles.
After(14)the win with a forehand winner down the line,Zheng lay down on her
back to rousing cheers across the Court Philippe-Chatrier,soaking up the(15)moment
for her own career and for the sport's profile in China.
It was the second Olympic tennis medal won by the Chinese delegation in Paris, after mixed
doubles pair Zhang Zhizhen and Wang Xinyu (16)a silver medal in Friday's final, which
was won by Czech team Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac at the same(17).
"Nothing can describe my feeling right now,it's unreal.I've always been hoping to get a
medal for China. Finally I (18)it."an emotional Zheng said during the on-court interview.
"I did everything I could.I think my country will be proud of me,I feel proud of myself.
The success is for all my team members,my families and whoever supported me,not just for me.
I just fought every single match. There were two matches that I almost lost on my way to
the final, especially 0-4 down in the second set against Iga (Swiatek)in the semis.I feel the
energy of all the support, knowing that I play for my country.I just never gave up and tried to
find every single solution,"Zheng said of her (19)path to success.
And for the celebration? The 21-year-old native of Hubei province just wants to join her
family and enjoy some home(20)
"I haven't thought about it yet.For sure to eat some Chinese food, after having eaten chicken
and rice every day here, nothing much of flavor,"she said with a grin.

II.Reading Comprehension
Section A(15')
Directions:For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,
B,C and D.Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Everyone in business has been told that success is all about attracting and retaining (
customers. It sounds simple and achievable.But,21,words of wisdom are soon forgotten.
Once companies have attracted customers they often 22 the second half of the story. In the
excitement of beating off the competition, negotiating prices, securing orders, and delivering the
product, managers tend to become carried away. They forget what they regard as the boring side
of business-23 that the customer remains a customer.
24 to concentrate on retaining as well as attracting customers costs business huge
amounts of money annually. It has been estimated that the average company loses between 10
and 30 per cent ofits customers every years. In constantly changing25,this is not surprising.
What is surprising is the fact that few companies have any idea how many customers they have
lost.
Only now are organizations beginning to wake up to those lost opportunities and calculate
the 26 implications.Cutting down the number of customers a company loses can make a big
27in its performance.Research in the US found that a five per cent decrease in the number
of defecting customers led to 28 increases of between 25 and 85 per cent.
In the US,Domino's Pizza estimates that a regular customer is worth more than $5,000 over
ten years.A customer who receives a poor quality product or service on their first visit and
29 never retumns,is losing the company thousands of dollars in 30profits(more if you
consider how many people they are likely to tell about their bad experience).
The logic behind cultivating customer 31 is impossible to deny."In practice most
companies'marketing effort is focused on getting customers, with little attention paid to 32
them",says Adrian Payne of Cornfield University'School of Management."Research suggests
that there is a close relationship between retaining customers and making profits.33
customers tend to buy more, are predictable and usually cost less to service than new customers.
Furthermore, they tend to be less price 34,and may provide free word-of-mouth advertising.
Retaining customers also makes it35for competitors to enter a market or increase their
share of a market.

Direction:Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or
unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B.C and D.Choose
the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
Researchers in the psychology department at the University of California at Los Angeles
(UCLA)have discovered a major difference in the way men and women respond to stress. This
difference may explain why men are more likely to suffer from stress-related disorders.
Until now, psychological research has maintained that both men and women have the same
"fight-or-flight"reaction to stress. In other words, individuals either react with aggressive
behavior, such as verbal or physical conflict("fight"),or they react by withdrawing from the
stressful situation("flight").However, the UCLA research team found that men and women have
quite different biological and behavioral responses to stress. While men often react to stress in
the fight-or-flight response, women often have another kind of reaction which could be called
"tend and befriend."That is,they often react to stressful conditions by protecting and nurturing
their young (tend"),and by looking for social contact and support from others-especially other
females ("befriend").
Scientists have long known that in the fight-or-flight reaction to stress,an important role is
played by certain hormones released by the body. The UCLA research team suggests that the
female tend-or-befriend response is also based on a hormone.This hormone,called oxytocin,has
been studied in the context of childbirth, but now it is being studied for its role in the response
of both men and women to stress. The principal investigator,Dr.Shelley E.Taylor, explained
that"animals and people with high levels of oxytocin are calmer, more relaxed, more social, and
less anxious."While men also secrete (oxytocin, its effects are reduced by male hormones.
In terms of everyday behavior, the UCLA study found that women are far more likely than
men to seek social contact when they are feeling stressed. They may phone relatives or friends,
or ask directions if they are lost.
The study also showed how fathers and mothers responded differently when they came
home to their family after a stressful day at work. The typical father wanted to be left alone to
enjoy some peace and quiet. For a typical mother, coping with a bad day at work meant focusing
her attention on her children and their needs.
The differences in responding to stress may explain the fact that women have lower
frequency of stress-related disorders such as high blood pressure or aggressive behavior. The
tend-and-befriend regulatory system may protect women against stress, and this may explain
why women on average live longer than men.
36.The UCLA study shows that in response to stress, men are more likely than women to
A.turn to friends for help
B.solve a conflict calmly
C.find an escape from reality
D.seek comfort from children
37.Which of the following is true about oxytocin according to the passage?
A.Men have the same level of oxytocin as women do.
B.Oxytocin used to be studied in both men and women.
C.Both animals and people have high levels of oxytocin.
D.Oxytocin has more of an effect on women than on men.

Human remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lost to science under a law that
threatens research into the history of humans in Britain,a group of leading archaeologists says.
In a letter addressed to the justice secretary,Ken Clarke,40 archaeologists write of their "deep
and widespread concern"about the issue. It centers on the law introduced by the Ministry of
Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied
within two years, regardless of their age.The decision means scientists have too little time to
study bones and other human remains of national and cultural significance.
"Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be
reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or a further special extension,is contrary
to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and of museum practice,"they write.
The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 400 dig sites, including the
remains of 60 or so bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC.
Archaeologists have been granted a temporary extension to give them more time, but eventually
2024-2025第一学期高三英语阶段测试3试卷第6页共12页
the bones will have to be returned to the ground.
The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoveries at sites such as Happisburgh
in Norfolk, where digging is continuing after the discovery of stone tools made by early humans
950,000 years ago.If human remains were found at Happisburgh, they would be the oldest in
northern Europe and the first indication of what this species was.Under the current practice of
the law those remains would have to be reburied and effectively destroyed.
Before 2008,guidelines allowed for the proper preservation and study of bones of sufficient
age and historical interest, while the Burial Act 1857 applied to more recent remains. The
Ministry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that the law was temporary, but has so
far failed to revise it.
Mike Parker Pearson,an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said:"Archaeologists have
been extremely patient because we were led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem,
but we feel that we cannot wait any longer."
The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains should be reburied,or on what
records should be kept.
43.According to the passage, scientists are unhappy with the law mainly because
A.it is only a temporary measure on the human remains
B.it is unreasonable and thus destructive to scientific research
C.it was introduced by the goverment without their knowledge
D.it is vague about where and how to rebury human remains
44.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A.Temporary extension of two years will guarantee scientists enough time.
B.Human remains of the oldest species were dug out at Happisburgh.
C.Human remains will have to be reburied despite the extension of time.
D.Scientists have been warned that the law can hardly be changed.
45.What can be inferred about the British law govering human remains?
A.The Ministry of Justice did not intend it to protect human remains.
B.The Burial Act 1857 only applied to remains uncovered before 1857.
C.The law on human remains hasn't changed in recent decades.
D.The Ministry of Justice has not done enough about the law.
46.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.New discoveries should be reburied, the goverment demands
B.Research time should be extended, scientists require.
C.Law on human remains needs thorough discussion, authorities say.
D.Law could bury ancient secrets for ever, archaeologists war.

B.The camp inspired me in the world of technology and made me develop an interest in it.
C.The absence of workable women role models further drives their under-representation.
D.Though the details vary, versions of Chantal's story are shared by girls across Africa and

E.Everything changed for Sizolwethu when she attended a coding camp run by the African
Girls Can Code Initiative(AGCCD.
F:But when she was selected to attend one of the country's top high schools,Chantal took to
computer science right away.
AGCCI Builds Digital Skills and Momentum (Towards a Better Future
In the rural Rwandan village where Chantal grew up,access to digital technology was
basically non-existent.(47)
After doing well in her exams, she told her
mother she wanted to pursue a career in programming. Her mother's response, she says, did not
surprise her:"She laughed and said 'Do you know where you are from? That's for students from
the cities, rich families or boys',Chantal recalls.
(48)
_A lack of exposure to tech coupled with strong gendered norms
continue to keep girls out of the field from an early age.Even for girls who do have exposure to
tech, their interest is often dampened by a lack of gender-responsive and interdisciplinary
curricula. This was the experience of Sizolwethu, whose high school offered classes on
information and communication technologies:"I was fortunate,"she says,"but I was never that
much in love with it."The course had failed to connect technology to the real-world challenges
she saw facing her community and country,a key driver of many girls'career choices research
shows.
(49)
There, she says, her passion for tech grew as the camp "opened
my eyes to the game changing innovations that can impact Africa.I learned that with little or no
resources,I can make a huge difference if passion and determination are there."Launched in
2018 by UN Women and the African Union Commission(AUC),AGCCI is working to empower
girls across Africa by helping them build digital literacy and computer skills and placing them
on the path to tech careers.(50)
She credits the initiative with pushing
her to pursue Information Technology at the university level-despite the pressure she was
receiving against it.Now she is using the skills she leamned to develop applications that help her
community, such as a bus booking system and more.
AGCCI works both to train and empower girls and to increase their inclusion in the tech
sector more generally.Awa Ndiaye-Seck,UN Women Special Representative to the African
Union and UNECA says,"We aim to address not only the policy-level bottlenecks related to
access to technology and finances but also the gender-based harmful norms and practices that
prevent women and girls from pursuing STEM fields."
