I remember when I was growing up, my mom always said, “Half the fun of doing anything is sharing it with others.” It’s so true. Friends allow us to enjoy the taste of our success and our joys and comfort us in our challenging moments. They provide a mirror for us to learn more about ourselves. I’ve always looked at friends as the family members. They enrich our lives. As Robert Louis Steven once said, “A friend is a present which you give yourself.”
To be a good friend, it’s very important to be a good listener. Hear what your friend says first instead of making conclusions (结论) quickly. Sometimes it is useful to repeat their words back to them. It can help them to realize whether their words were what they wanted to say.
Patience is also important in being a good friend. You know the old golden rule, “Care for others in the way you would like them to care for you.” The support of a friend during a difficult time could make the difference between success and failure. Encouragement and confidence are the best gifts that can change a person’s life.
Politeness and kindness are also very necessary, especially when you make new friends. If you want to offer your friends some suggestions, describe and explain them politely. Remember to keep smiling on your face.
We should choose our friends carefully, because they can have a huge effect on our life. As someone told me, “The attitudes of your friends are like the buttons on a lift. They will either take you up or down.”
31. In fact, the mother’s words mean that ________.
A. a friend’s present can make us richer

32. To be a good listener, we should ________.
A. hear what friends say all the time
B. help friends make sure what they say
C. make conclusions about friends’ words quickly
33. When we make new friends, we should always ________.
A. give them suggestions B. try to make them laugh C. be polite and kind to them
34. The underlined word “buttons” means ________ in Chinese.
A. 按钮 B. 信号 C. 品牌
35. The passage mainly tells us ________.
A. how to be a good friend B. how to influence a friend C. how to lead a friend to success

There are two kinds of waterways in the world. One is natural, called a river. The other is man-made, called a canal (运河). China has the longest canal in the world-the Grand Canal.
Recently the United Nations (UN) produced a stamp of the Grand Canal. It will let more people learn about the great Chinese waterway. The picture on the UN stamp shows a nighttime view of the canal in Yangzhou, Jiangsu.
How was the Grand Canal built?
The 3,200-kilometer-long Grand Canal dates back nearly 2,500 years. During the Spring and Autumn Period, people started to build a canal in today’s Jiangsu Province. During the Sui Dynasty, it became part of the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal runs from Beijing to Zhejiang Province.
The canal connects five river basins, such as the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. In 2014, it got onto the World Heritage List.
Why is it important?
Modern planes and trains make it easy to get things from different places. However, things were moved slowly by horse or on foot in old times. It took a lot of time to move large things like bags of grain and tea by land. The Grand Canal made things faster and easier to move.
During the Sui Dynasty, for example, fine grains grew in the south. But they were kept in the capital, Luoyang, in the north. With the Grand Canal, people were able to send grain to the capital in a short time. The canal also made the economy (经济) grow fast. Silk, tea, and coal were all sent between the north and south.
“The Great Wall symbolizes the firm backbone of China, while the Grand Canal is bloodline that flows through hearts of Chinese people,” said Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum.

Thanks to the “double reduction” policy, I’m free from tons of homework and endless after-school classes on weekends and have enough time to do something that I’m interested in.
Last Saturday, I joined in the reading project in our community which aims to encourage people to read more books and share their different opinions about what they have read. People of different ages sat around and began to read Treasure Island together. Then I shared my feelings on the book and listened to others express their ideas on the book, which broadened my mind a lot.
I think weekend activities like this are more interesting, meaningful and useful than just staying at home doing endless homework. It not only enriches our experiences but also helps us to think critically.
