What color is your name? What color is Wednesday? These questions might sound strange to
most people, but some can answer right away. One person says her name is the color red. For
another person, Wednesday is blue. These people have a condition called synesthesia. This means
they experience two senses at the same time. For these people, the senses of smell, sound, sight,
touch, and taste are not separate. They might see and also hear colors, for example, or hear as
well as feel sounds.
The most common form of synesthesia is to hear sounds as colors. A person with synesthesia
might hear the number three as blue or the letter D as red. Someone might always see green upon
hearing the word April. Another person might see different colors while listening to music. Some
people also taste colors. To one person, beef might taste blue and to another, yellow. Some people
experience feelings in color. For example, one person with synesthesia reports feeling pain as the
color orange.
Another form of synesthesia is to experience sounds or tastes as shapes. Some people see music as
squares and circles. Some people taste a sweet as a smooth ball. There are other forms of synesthesia,
as well. For one man, different words have different tastes. Some words taste like pork; others taste
like potatoes or eggs.
Synesthesia is not a common condition. Perhaps only one person out of every 5,000 has it. For
these people, the everyday world can be a colorful and interesting place.
41. If your city has a population of 30 million, how many people probably have synesthesia ?
A. Only 5,000 . B. About 5 million.
C. About 600. D. About 6,000.
42. Which of the following is NOT an example of synesthesia?
A. Feeling pain in red. B. Tasting beef as green.
C. Feeling warm in April. D. Seeing music as squares.
43. What is this passage mainly about ?
A. An unusual condition. B. People who like color.
C. The color of pain. D. Music and art.

If you grew up watching David Attenborough specials, you've probably heard the term “death
roll” over slow-motion film of crocodiles tearing wild animals apart. But do all crocodiles do this?
Up until now, experts have assumed that only crocodiles with broad snouts do death rolls. The
same was thought to be true for extinct species. But when Stephanie Drumheller and her colleagues
3
went straight to the source-studying living crocodiles-they found something different. All modern
species, except one, can do the death roll.
The crocodiles volunteered for the project represented 25 living species, all held at the St.
Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park in Florida. Some were animals transferred from other
places; some were born at the park, and others were caught as“trouble-making”animals. Each test
animal was presented with a bait (诱饵) on which resistance would be applied after a bite, and a rope
or pole normally used to catch crocodiles which often makes the animals try to escape.
Only a single species out of 25 didn't do death rolls under either circumstance.Previous studies
thought that the tearing forces produced by death roll behavior would be too damaging to thin-snouted
species like gharials yet even these animals rolled.
The conclusion is that death roll behavior isn't limited to just a few special crocodile species, but is
common through the family despite differences in size, snout shape, or whether the animals are raised
or caught. The results mean that the ability to death roll isn’t all about eating, or even death. It's also
about self-defense.
“ Death rolling behavior may have nothing to do with feeding strategy at all,”Drumheller and her
colleagues write. Crocodiles of all sorts fight with each other by biting, often along the head, legs, and
the base of the tail. There are even fossils(化石)that show similar injuries. The “ death roll ”
may actually be a “fight roll”.And given how long crocodiles of all sorts have done death rolls
through time, they’ll keep rolling on.
44. What was commonly believed before Stephanie Drumheller's research?
A. Only ancient crocodiles could do death rolls.
B. Crocodiles do death rolls in slow motion.
C. Only broad-snouted crocodiles can do death rolls.
D. Crocodiles can do death rolls only after they grow up.
45. Where did the crocodiles for the research come from?
A. Their natural habitat. B. A variety of backgrounds.
C. Various parks throughout Florida. D. A farm zoological park in Florida.
46. What is the real function of crocodiles’ death rolls according to the research?
A. To feed themselves. B. To defend their young
C. To claim their territory. D. To protect themselves.
47.Which column of a website is the text most probably taken from?
A. Fossils & Ruins. B. Plants & Animals.
C. Animal Learning & Intelligence. D. Extinction & Wildlife Conservation.

At Jenner Park primary School in Wales, pupils between the ages of seven and nine are
writing letters to residents of a local care home. The initiative sees children and their elderly
pen pals exchange updates about their lives, helping to build relationships between
generations while also giving the children an understanding of the value of writing letters by
hand-an activity that's becoming less and less common.
Laura Johnson, the teacher who coordinates(协调)the scheme at Jenner Park, says:
"All of our writing is for a purpose. That's the key in getting children to value handwriting."
As soon as you put an audience there, knowing that someone out there is going to be reading it-
whether that's parents or another group of children-there's always the real sense of pride to
go along with it," says Johnson.
The school maintains a focus on handwriting throughout the years, from dedicated
handwriting classes in the prep school to a calligraphy club offered to the older groups. It has
created something called the pen license. It allows younger children to move from using a
pencil to pen once they’ve reached a certain standard. "There's a lot of excitement about
reaching that pen licence stage," says Johnson.
Johnson adds that developing students’ writing in this way matters for their life after
school:"For us, it's important that we create citizens of the future who have a set of life skills
that can make them successful." The dominance of technology is a challenge, she admits, but
she also believes both tools have their place. "Obviously we're competing with technology
continuously," she says. "And I know there are people there saying you don't need to bother
about handwriting because tech is out there. But we don't see it as competing. We're trying to get
pupils to realize that there's a place for handwriting and to know when it's important to use each."
48. Why does the school launch the initiative?
A. To help children to find the meaning of handwriting.
B. To encourage children to show pity for the aged.
C. To persuade children to choose proper courses.
D. To urge children to acknowledge the audience.
49. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the school ?
A. Its after-class activities. B. Its practice in handwriting.
C. Its academic achievements. D. Its innovation in technology.
50. What can we infer from the last paragraph about handwriting ?
A. It will win against technology. B. It will give way to technology.
C. It will co-exist with technology. D. It will cause confusion to people.
51.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Handwriting promotes the pen pal scheme.
B. Slow communication reduces misunderstanding.
4
C. Creative ideas for dealing with challenges gain popularity.
D. Putting pen to paper contributes to a love of the written word.

How do you get your information when you go online? Are you ever worried that you might
only be seeing a limited view ? Part of the reason for this is the increased use of Artificial
Intelligence (AI) and algorithms (算法) that make sure we only see things that interest us.
The phrase “echo chamber” has become widely used since events like the election of Donald
Trump as the US president. It means that users of social media websites such as Facebook only
read their own opinions or ones they agree with.
Algorithms, like the kind used by Facebook, often point us toward articles that show our own
ideas, and search results usually give us what we already know and like.
As a result, social network users are likely to fall into the“Relevance Paradox(相关性悖论)”,
which happens when people only read information that is relevant to them, according to
The Huffington Post. And more often than not, people don’t even realize this is happening. They stop
looking for fresh, new information from different points of view because of a lack of experience and
knowledge of other opinions.
This means some of us unknowingly live in an echo chamber. This then continues because people
in the same social group agree with us too. In other words, the echo chambers stay because they tell us
that we are right, even if we are not.
As websites get to know us better, they get better at showing us things that interest us,while also
removing things we don’t really like, Eli Pariser , CEO of news website Upworthy told the US radio
station NPR.
“ What most algorithms are trying to do is to increase the amount of attention you're spending,”
he said. And while it helps us deal with the large amount of information on the Internet, that algorithm
also has some downsides. “ The danger is that you end up not seeing what people who think
differently see and, in fact, not even knowing that it exists.
So here comes the burning question-is there a way out?
“ The way to break free from this is to start understanding how algorithms work, and to manually
seek out others with different viewpoints.” Theo Priestley, CEO of Cronycle, a web platform told
The Huffington Post.
52. According to the article, people in an echo chamber .
A. are more willing to accept different ideas
B. prefer to look for fresh, new information
C. only recognize information they are willing to accept
D. only trust information from well-known sources
53. According to the article, algorithms used by most social media .
A. fail to draw most people’s attention
B. are slow in dealing with information
C. are good at showing people a variety of viewpoints
D. may make people narrow-minded without them noticing
54. Which of the following statements would Theo Priestley probably agree with?
A. Social media should use less AI and algorithms.
B. People should actively look for different ideas themselves.
C. It is impossible for people to escape from echo chambers.
D.Algorithms that attract readers’ attention should not be used.
55. What is the article mainly about?
A. The idea of echo chamber and how to avoid it.
B. How algorithms deal with information.
C. The latest development in artificial intelligence.
D. The best way to search information online.

Visual Learners Learn Best by Sight
Every class contains students with varying styles of learning. Their style reflects their
preferred form of instruction and easiest means of mastering new knowledge. Teachers with
a basic understanding of different styles can adapt their lessons to give all students the best chance
of success.
The typical visual learner prefers to read information in a textbook or on a whiteboard rather
than listen to a lecture. 56 They often enjoy drawing and can use this practice as a study tool.
Visual learners tend to use sight words in their everyday terminology(专门用语). For example,
they might say,“Let's take a look at this.” They easily remember details including colors and spatial
(空间的) arrangements. 57 They often have a good sense of direction because they can
visualize maps and directions in their mind.
58 They follow instruction better when they can see a demonstration(示范) first. They don't
like to be told how to do something. Visual learners typically prefer images, maps, graphs and other
visual representations to other forms of instruction. They like to read.
Teachers need to use a variety of teaching methods, including diagrams, mind maps, word webs,
visuals and other forms of graphic organizers to help visual learners get the most from their instruction.
Accompany oral instruction with a written outline before requiring students to complete an
assignment. 59
5
Students can have different teachers whose styles of instruction differ from their own learning
preference. 60 For example, students can use highlighters when they review their notes, organize
information into outlines and use flashcards to study for tests.
A. Visual learners do better in reciting
B. Visualization techniques help them remember things.
C. Avoid lecturing without accompanying notes or visuals.
D. And they’re good at memory games that require visual recall.
E. Both the teacher and the students can get the most out of the instruction.
F. Visual learners learn best when they can see the material being taught.
