If you struggle to meet new people or join in a conversation at social events, it might be that your body language is sending the message to others to stay away. 31 ? Below are some tips to get you started.
Smile. Although it is possible to overdo smiling, generally it is better to smile than frown (皱眉). Try to find things that really make you happy or laugh and your smile will come across as natural rather than forced.
32 . Make sure that you aren’t using objects to shield (遮住) yourself from others. At a party, hold your drink at your side instead of close to your chest (胸膛). Keeping objects between you and others makes you appear guarded and closed.
Use eye contact. When you do end up talking with someone, be sure to maintain eye contact. Avoiding eye contact makes you appear untrustworthy or disinterested. If direct eye contact feels hard, try looking at only one eye at a time, or at a part between a person’s eyes. 33
Avoid nervous habits. Even though you might be nervous, avoid the habits that go with it. 34 . Don’t play with your pen or the change in your pocket. Keep your hands relaxed at your sides or use them to gesture (做手势) when making conversation.
35 . Say nice things about other people instead of mean things. Approach others and include those who seem to be left out. Be a positive person and you will attract other positive people to you.
Although it may feel unnatural at first, with time you should start to feel more open and confident as a result of changing your body language.

D.Apart from body language, always be positive

二、语法填空
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
Different cultures communicate in very different ways. In Asia, people use lots of body language, facial expressions, and silence 16 (express) meaning. For instance, in Japan, it might be 17 (normal) viewed as rude to directly object to a statement. However, in the West, speaking directly is not only normal but valued. People place 18 (much) focus on the actual words being used than on cues (暗示) of body language.
Additionally, in China, it is common for someone to smile when they don’t understand something. This could be 19 (confuse) for a Westerner who might think this means the listener understands and agrees with 20 is being said.
Another communicative feature 21 is viewed differently across the world is interruptions (插嘴). In many 22 (part) of the West, interrupting another person when they are speaking is considered to be rude. However, in some African and Latin American countries, it is viewed as a means to join and actively participate in the conversation.
Even within 23 same continent (洲), cultures can vary from country to country. For example, in the UK, it is very common to say “please” and “thank you” to someone 24 (serve) you in a shop or restaurant, but in Spain, these expressions 25 (hear) much less often and are reserved more for requesting or receiving kindness.

Many of you know that when we are under stress, our brain requires a certain amount of hand-to-body touching. However, when circumstances are not only stressful but threaten us, the brain causes certain neck behaviors, which are protective, relieving and totally unique.
I first observed the significance of neck behaviors early in my life when my grandmother was almost hit by a car in Miami Beach. At that instant, she immediately covered her neck with her hand. I was surprised that her hand went to her neck and not toward the car.
At university, I saw this same behavior in anatomy (解剖学) classes as we examined animals. Both men and women would cover their necks as they looked down at the smelly animals for the first time. But I also noticed that men and women did it differently. Men tended to grab (抓住) their necks more robustly (用力地), or even massage (按揉) their necks. Women tended to respond conversely. They would do it more delicately (优雅地), using their fingers to cover a very specific area.
Aware that when people are troubled, scared, concerned, worried, or nervous, they cover or touch their necks, I never appreciated the potential use of this very telling behavior until I joined the FBI.
In 1979, while working in Yuma, Arizona, my partner and I went to talk to the mother of a dangerous person. When we knocked on her door, she seemed tense but allowed us in. I asked her many questions about her son and she answered all of them without hesitation.
However, when I inquired, “Is your son in the house?” during that interview, she put her hand to her neck and said, “No, he’s not.” Her body was speaking to me more honestly than her words. The words “son” and “house” together were a threat to her and she touched her neck in the same way my grandmother had done 14 years earlier. That early lesson taught me to pay attention to the neck because few people do.
29.What did the author’s grandmother do when a car was running toward her?
A.She placed her hand on her neck. B.She showed her hand to the driver.
C..She cried out loud. D.She was glued to the spot frightened.
30.What does the underlined word “conversely” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Directly. B.Properly. C.Emotionally. D.Oppositely
31.What can we infer about the mother of the dangerous person?
A.Her words showed hesitation.
B.Her neck behavior gave her away.
C.She was completely honest with the author.
D.She was perfectly calm under great threat.
32.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To show body language secrets of the neck.
B.To describe how officers use body language to detect lying.
C.To introduce different types of body language.
D.To explain why men and women react differently to stress.

16.考查动词不定式。句意:在非语言交流方面,亚洲人使用各种肢体语言、面部表情和沉默来表达意思。分析句子结构可知,此处为固定用法“use sth. to do sth.”,其中不定式作目的状语,所以此处使用动词不定式形式。故填to express。
17.考查副词。句意:例如,在日本,直接反对一项声明通常会被视为粗鲁。分析句子结构可知,此处为副词作状语修饰动词,normal的副词为normally意为“通常”符合句意。故填normally。
18.考查形容词比较级。句意:比起非语言暗示,人们更关注实际使用的词语。分析句子结构可知,此处为形容词作定语修饰名词focus,根据空后的than可知,此处为形容词比较级。故填more。

故填that或which。
22.考查名词复数。句意:在西方许多地方,打断别人说话被认为是粗鲁的。分析句子结构可知,此处为名词作宾语,空前有many修饰,所以此处使用名词复数。故填parts。
23.考查冠词。句意:即使在同一大洲,礼仪也会因文化而异。分析句子结构可知,此处为固定短语the same意为“同一,一样”符合句意。故填the。
故填are heard。

At last, end the activity using the discussion points below:
•Can you give examples of when someone’s body language communicated a different message from what he/she actually said?

【答案】29.A 30.D 31.B 32.A
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了作者早年注意到人在感到有威胁的情况下会把手放在自己的脖子上,并且在FBI的工作中运用这一行为信号来帮助自己判断。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“I first observed the significance of neck behaviors early in my life when my grandmother was almost hit by a car in Miami Beach. At that instant, she immediately covered her neck with her hand. (我第一次观察到脖子行为的意义是在我年轻时,当时我的祖母在迈阿密海滩差点被车撞到。那一刻,她立即用手捂住了脖子。)”可知,当汽车朝作者祖母撞去的时候,祖母立刻用手捂住了脖子。故选A。
30.词义猜测题。根据第三段中的“But I also noticed that men and women did it differently. (但我也注意到,男性和女性的做法不同。)”可知,男性和女性把手放在脖子上的方式不同。再根据第三段中的“Men tended to grab (抓住) their necks more robustly (用力地), or even massage (按揉) their necks. (男性往往更用力地抓脖子,甚至按摩脖子。)”和“They would do it more delicately (优雅地), using their fingers to cover a very specific area. (她们会更优雅地做,用手指覆盖一个非常特定的区域。)”可知,男性用力抓脖子和女性优雅地抓脖子是两种相反的行为。由此可推测出,conversely意为“相反地”,与oppositely意思最接近。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“However, when I inquired, ‘Is your son in the house?’ during that interview, she put her hand to her neck and said, ‘No, he’s not.’ Her body was speaking to me more honestly than her words. (然而,在那次面谈中,当我问‘你儿子在家吗?’时,她把手放在脖子上说:‘不,他不在。’她的身体对我说的话比她的话要更诚实。)”可知,当作者询问她的儿子是否在家时,这个女士一边说不在家一边把手放在脖子上,作者通过她的肢体动作明白了真正的答案,她的这一脖子行为出卖了她。故选B。
32.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“However, when circumstances are not only stressful but threaten us, the brain causes certain neck behaviors, which are protective, relieving and totally unique. 故选A。

【答案】One possible version:
The Importance of Using Body Language Properly
A year ago, I participated in a speech competition organized by my school, and I consciously paid attention to my body language. For example, I demonstrated my confidence with firm steps while going on stage. During the speech, I used the posture of my arms and rich facial expressions to express the content vividly. After the speech, I bowed to express my deep gratitude.
My performance was praised by the judges, especially my proper body language. From this experience, I have realized the meaning conveyed by body language is sometimes much more than that conveyed by oral language.
