B As a child, Renae often felt lonely. But that all changed when she turned 10.For her birthday, Renae’s grandmother gave her a cute dog named Chloe. From the very start, the two were inseparable (形影不离的) “She was my best friend,” Renae says . But when Renae was 14, her father started to work from home, and the house needed to be quiet. “Chloe was yappy,” Renae says. “I was just a kid, so I didn’t have any choice .I didn’t want to give up my dog. I felt so sad about it.” The family sent Chloe to a society. Though they were told the dog would find a new home, they couldn’t know for sure. “I called the society to find out what happened to her,” Renae says, “but they couldn’t tell me anything.” In time, Renae grew up. got married, and had her own child. But her family didn’t feel complete. Remembering the joy a dog had brought, Renae decided to keep a dog for her kid. Then she saw a post online about a 13- year- old dog that needed a new home. The dog looked like Chloe------ she was even named Chloe. When she met Chloe, the dog looked familiar (熟悉的). And Chloe appeared to feel the same way. Chloe reminded Renae of her old dog. Still, many years had passed since Renae last saw Chloe, so the feeling seemed to be little more than wishful thinking. “My family thought I was crazy.” Renae says. But her mom realized there was a way to test it: Their Chloe had been micro- chipped (给动植物植入微型芯片) as a little dog. They found the ID number, and then Renae took their new Chloe to have a check. “The numbers were a match.” Renae says. “I felt so lucky.” After years of thinking she’d never see her dog again, Renae is happy to have her back. As for Chloe, “she’s made herself right at home,” Renae says. “And why shouldn’t she?” She knows that she’ll be with me forever.” 6. Why did the writer send Chloe to a society? A. Because she didn’t like it any more. B. Because her father hated the dog. C. Because the dog was sick. D. Because her father needed a quiet place to work. 7. What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A. Chloe had a loving new home after leaving Renae. B. The society offered to tell Renae something about Chloe. C. After Chloe being sent away, Renae still cared about her. D. The family was sure Chloe would live happily without them. 8. How old was Chloe when she was sent to the society? A. 4 years old. B. 6 years old. C. 8 years old. D. 10 years old. 9. How did Renae know the new Chloe was their old pet? A. By reading the online post. B. By testing the new Chloe at home. C. By checking the microchip number. D. By getting in touch with the society. 10. What would be the best title for the text? A. A Gift from Grandma B. An Unforgettable Dog C. A Special Society D. A Perfect Match C The ocean is not a quiet place. This is partly caused by sea animals. They use sound to find what they eat, whom they play with, or which place they move towards. But noise from human activities is increasingly troubling the lives of ocean animals. According to scientists, loud noise may increase mass strandings (大规模搁浅) of sea animals. Researchers recorded only five of these events in the first half of the 20th century. From 1950 to 2004, they recorded more than 1,200 mass strandings. This is perhaps because of the use of sonar (声呐) underwater. Another main reason of loud underwater noise is pile driving (打桩). Piles are supports for bridges, oil and gas producing areas. They’re driven deep into the floor of the ocean. Driving in a single pile can take several hours and as many as 5,000 hits. This process creates a lot of noise. To restrain that noise, some companies are making use of tiny bubbles (气泡). A single bubble is easily broken. However, the bubble wall can make pile driving quieter. The bubble wall is usually created in this way: A tube (管) is placed in a ring around a pile. Air is then let out through closely spaced openings on the tube. When the bubbles rise, they act as walls and take in some of the noise. Some more of the sound reflects (反射) back and becomes stuck inside the wall. Such bubble walls are really helpful. Other changes to pile driving can help as well. For example, people can take breaks in pile driving and let animals travel through. Our noise in the ocean is causing big problems. But small changes in our behavior can make a big difference to animals’ lives in the world’s oceans. 11. What is troubling the lives of ocean animals according to the text? A. The gas produced in the sea. B. The food polluted by humans. C. The noise from human activities. D. The bubble walls made by some companies. 12. Which paragraphs show how humans make changes to pile driving? A. ①② B. ③④ C. ①③ D. ②④ 13. What does the underlined word “restrain” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Control. B. Increase. C. Make. D. Begin. 14. In which part of a magazine can you read the text? A. Culture. B. Health. C. Education. D. Nature. 15. What is the structure (结构) of the text? (P= paragraph) A. B. C. D.
