It all started with a simple question: “Can I paint your portrait?”
This summer, Brian Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved to California. Outside the couple’s fourth-floor apartment, an untidy homeless man was often yelling on the street corner, sometimes keeping them awake at night.
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading the book Love Does, about the power of love in action, when his quiet was disturbed by the homeless man. Inspired by the book’s compassionate message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go outside and introduce himself.
In that first unexpected, Peterson learned that the man’s name was Matt Faris. He’d moved to California to pursue a career in music, but he soon fell on hard times and ended up living on the street for more than a decade. “It was the weirdest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later. “I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year. But his story, the life inside of him, inspired me.” And even though Peterson hadn’t picked up a brush in about eight years, he found himself asking if he could paint Faris’s portrait. Faris said yes.
Peterson’s connection with Faris led him to form Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization focused on befriending and painting portraits of members of the community who are unhoused. Peterson sells the impressive 30-by-40-inch canvas-signed by both subject and artist-for a few thousand dollars, splitting the proceeds and putting half into what he calls a “love account” for his model. He then helps people use the money to get back on their feet.
Peterson has painted 41 of these portraits himself. But there’s more to the finished products than the money they bring to someone down-and-out. He’s discovered that the buyers tend to connect to the story of the person in the painting, finding similarities with someone they might have otherwise overlooked or misunderstood.
“People often tell me, ‘I was the one that would cross the street. But I see homeless people differently now,’” Peterson says. “I didn’t know that would happen.”
24. What inspired Brian Peterson to approach the homeless man?
A. The loud yell from the street comer.
B. The beauty he saw on the homeless’ face.
C. The desire to donate money to the homeless.
D. The positive impact from Love Does.
25. What does Peterson do with the proceeds from selling the portraits?
A. Donates them to local homeless shelters and relief centers.
B. Invests them in his nonprofit organization, Faces of Santa Ana.
C. Gives money to the portrait subject and helps people regain stability.
D. Uses them to fund the local disadvantaged communities.
26. What impact have the portraits had on buyers?
A. They have become friends with the homeless individuals.
B. They have overcome their misconceptions about the homeless.
C. They have stopped crossing the street to avoid the homeless.
D. They have gained profits from those who are down-and-out.
27. What is the main purpose of Faces of Santa Ana?
A. To raise awareness about the homeless through art.
B. To provide resources and housing for the homeless.
C. To boost connection between artists and their subjects.
D. To discover the root cause of homelessness.

Dementia (痴呆), a serious mental disorder caused by brain disease or injury, affects the ability to think, remember and behave normally. 160,000 people have some forms of dementia in Sweden, Alzheimer’s disease being the most common. At the same time, many new diagnostic (诊断的) methods and early-intervention treatment have been developed in recent years, which highlights the need to identify more risk factors for the disease.
Previous studies have demonstrated a possible association between depression and dementia. A present study now clearly shows that people who have been diagnosed with depression are more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Unlike the previous ones, the study was conducted using Region Stockholm’s administrative healthcare database, which contains all healthcare contacts recorded by the region. It shows that the risk of Alzheimer’s disease was more than twice as high in patients with stress and in patients with depression as it was in patients without either condition; in patients with both depression it was up to four times as high.
“The reason for it is unknown,” says the study’s last author Axel C. Carlsson. “The finding is important in that it enables us to improve preventative efforts and understand links with the other risk factors for dementia.”
The researchers focused on patients between the ages of 18 and 65 and between 2012 and 2013. They identified 44,447 people with a diagnosis of depression and followed them for eight years to see how many of them were later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. A comparison with all other 1,362,548 individuals in the age group showed that more people with depression had also been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
“It’s very uncommon for people in this age group to develop dementia, so we need to identify all possible risk factors for the disease,” says Dr Carlsson. “We show here that the diagnosis is more common in people who have suffered depression, but more studies will be required if we’re to demonstrate any reason there.”
28. What do the previous studies and the present one differ in?
A. The target. B. The method.
C. The purpose. D. The theory.
29. Why is the new finding important?
A. It clarifies the condition of dementia.
B. It makes clear the risks of depression.
C. It confirms the previous study finding.
D. It helps with the dementia prevention.
30. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about concerning the study?
A. Its process. B. Its background.
C. Its application. D. Its assessment.
31. What may the follow-up studies focus on?
A Why dementia spreads wide in Sweden.
B. What links exist among mental diseases.
C. How depression connects with dementia.
D. What other risk factors lead to dementia.

When wind blows through a bigleaf maple (大叶枫), paper-thin, wing-like seeds called samaras gently spin towards the ground. The fruit’s tissue allows the wind to guide it further away from the tree. Inspired by the seeds, researchers designed a tiny, winged microchip, no larger than a grain of sand, that is powerful enough to monitor environmental pollution and airborne disease.
Called the microflier, the microchip has no motor to push it forward in the air but instead was designed to catch the wind. To perfect the microchip’s flying capability and shape, scientists took inspiration from the forms of various airborne seeds. The research team improved various designs until the microfliers flew slowly and more steadily than nature’s samara seeds. The slower falling rate allows the microchip to keep flying for longer, which gives it more time to collect data and monitor air pollutants and airborne diseases.
To perfect the microflier’s flight, researchers took inspiration from children’s pop-up books to create the three-dimensional wings. Usually, electronic microchips are flat, two-dimensional objects, but something flat won’t take flight. To make the 3-D shape, John A. Rogers and his team built a stretched rubber base that the microchip rests on. The wings pop into flight mode when the rubber base is relaxed.
The chip gathers data with sensors across its surface that can sense and monitor pH levels, test for heavy metals or chemicals, and track air pollution. An antenna (天线) on the microflier then sends all the collected data to a computer or phone. Rogers and his team are planning to test out the electronic chips soon by dropping thousands of the chips in a field. The microfliers will change color depending on the number of heavy metals present in the field where they land. A drone will then fly over the area and take photos of the microflier’s colors, allowing researchers to map out the pollutants.
Rogers and his team also designed the microchips to break down over time to prevent environmental pollution.
32. What is the winged microchip designed to do?
A. Guide seeds from the tree. B. Prevent airborne diseases.
C. Keep track of air qualities. D. Catch the wind to fly away.
33. What do paragraph 2 and 3 focus on?
A. Where researchers draw inspiration. B. How the microflier has improved.
C. What the microchip does for humans. D. Why the microflier flies more stably.
34. What do the researchers do with the microflier in the future?
A. Drop chips in the field. B. Monitor the soil color.
C. Map out air pollutants. D. Handle soil pollution.
35. Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text?
A. Winged microchips for monitoring environment
B. Microflier: A flying device of spreading seeds
C. Drone: A photographer of microflier’s colors
D Electronic chips for finding airborne diseases

Sue was 83 years old and lived by the ocean shore in a big beautiful house. She wished her son Steve would visit her, even if for only a day. Of course, the young man had a family of his own now, a darling little daughter Eva, and a business to take care of. Steve got on video calls with Sue every other day. However, Sue thought of her son and granddaughter, wishing she was with them. One day, Sue heard sounds from the neighboring house. Sue looked through the window and was delighted to see that she had new neighbors.
One morning, when Sue woke up and walked along the shore, she heard the sounds of water being splashed and the sound of children laughing wildly. She followed the sound and was concerned on finding the twins from the neighboring house standing, knee deep in ocean water. Something didn’t feel right. “Why would anyone leave their kids unattended on the shore?” Sue thought. She grabbed the kids’ hands and walked them to their home. As Sue opened the door, she found the young mother lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. Sue didn’t waste a second in calling 911.
The first responders managed to revive (恢复) her consciousness on the spot. “My boys! Ralph! Ray!” the woman cried out to her kids as the ambulance took her away. Sue said, “Don’t worry. Everything will be alright. I’ll take care of your sweet boys.” She kept her promise and looked after the kids like a grandmother. She took Ralph and Ray in and let them sleep in the bedroom that was specially made for her granddaughter Eva.
It was during these days that she knew that the boys’ father died of illness. Sue knew that the neighbor, Selina, had been trying to make ends meet by selling sweaters and socks that she knit. Looking at Selina’s children eat and drink with such joy, she realized how much she longed to see her little Eva. 【解析】
【原文】Shinichi Sakamoto is 57, and works for Shimizu, one of Japan’s biggest construction companies. He is part of the greying and falling workforce. According to Mr. Sakamoto, statistics showed that a third of Japanese construction laborers are over 54 years old, and they are considering retiring so soon. And they’re not being replaced by younger builders. “The number of laborers under 30 is just above 10%,” he said. In September, Mr. Sakamoto’s firm gained a promising new co-worker — a robot. It is currently working on a high-rise development in Osaka, transporting heavy building materials every night from the ground floor to where they’re needed. “Can you imagine that materials are in the right position in the morning when laborers come to the site?” said Mr. Sakamoto, “He even works at night time.” Robots will benefit from superfast 5G mobile networks. Better connections will make it easier for multiple robots to cooperate. Many small robots could work together on different parts of a task. An example is the 3D printing robots at a university in Singapore, each of which can print concrete following a computer map. All robots in a group could learn from what one robot is learning. Mr. Sakamoto also introduced other robot workers. The robots operate on their own, performing tasks a manager assigns them on a computer.

A The loud yell from the street comer.
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. B 27. A

31 What may the follow-up studies focus on?
A. Why dementia spreads wide in Sweden.
B. What links exist among mental diseases.
C. How depression connects with dementia.
D. What other risk factors lead to dementia.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. C

D. Electronic chips for finding airborne diseases

By the time Selina came home from the hospital, the kids had already started calling Sue “Grandma”.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Selina was very moved and struggled to find the words to thank her elderly neighbor. Sue hugged her and said there was no need to feel indebted to her. “Your kids have ended up making room in my old heart. This house is yours as much as it is mine, darling,” Sue said. That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Sue and Selina. Sue looked after the kids while Selina went to a new job she had found, and Selina took care of Sue like her own mother.
Paragraph 2:
One Thanksgiving, when Sue and the Selina were talking, Sue’s door was knocked. It was her son Steve and her granddaughter, Eva! Steve thought it would come as a surprise for his mother. However, Steve was speechless, looking at the amount of joy and love around the house. Seeing his mother happier than she had been in years, Steve felt a little guilty for not giving her this happiness sooner. Steve made himself a promise: To become another source of love, belonging, and happiness in his beloved mother’s sunset years.
