Grade 7 students are at the beginning of adolescence, with a strong interest in English learning but limited vocabulary and a shaky grasp of grammar knowledge. They are lively and enjoy participating in classroom activities, eager to explore and understand different cultures and traditions. The theme of this unit, "More than Fun," is close to students' daily lives, which can resonate with them and enhance their cross-cultural understanding while learning English.
III. Teaching Focus and Difficulties
Focus:
1.Mastering vocabulary and sentence patterns for describing hobbies, such as "I enjoy doing sth.," "My favorite hobby is..."
2.Understanding and applying "there be" structures and past tense to describe experiences related to hobbies.
Difficulties:
1.Flexibly using the learned knowledge in real-life contexts for communication.
2.Deeply exploring the underlying meanings and cultural values behind hobbies, engaging in insightful discussions and writing.
IV. Teaching Process
Step 1: Lead-in (5 minutes)
Teacher's Activity: Show a short video blending musical, sports, or artistic elements from both East and West to spark students' interest. Ask, "What hobbies do you have? Do you think hobbies are just for fun?" Encourage brief answers.
Students' Activity: Watch the video, listen attentively, and think about the teacher's questions. Actively participate in the discussion, sharing their hobbies and opinions.
Design Intention: Arouse students' interest, introduce the topic, and review vocabulary and sentence patterns related to hobbies from the previous lesson.
Step 2: Vocabulary Learning (10 minutes)
Teacher's Activity: Use PPT to present new words like "creative," "teamwork," "cultural exchange," etc., with relevant pictures or objects for explanation. Provide example sentences to help students understand word usage and organize a "Quick Response" game to reinforce memory.
Students' Activity: Observe PPT images and objects, listen to the teacher's explanation of new words. Follow the teacher in reading words and try to make sentences with new words. Actively participate in the "Quick Response" game to deepen memory.
Design Intention: Help students understand new words through visual aids, deepen understanding with example sentences, and consolidate memory through games.
Step 3: Pre-reading (5 minutes)
Teacher's Activity: Share several pictures showing different hobby scenarios, such as painting, swimming, reading, football matches, etc. Guide students to describe the pictures and discuss the fun and benefits of these hobbies.
Students' Activity: Observe pictures, try to describe them in English. Actively participate in discussions, sharing their opinions and experiences with different hobbies.
Design Intention: Activate students' prior knowledge of hobbies through visual and oral discussions, preparing them for the reading text.
Step 4: Reading Comprehension (15 minutes)
Teacher's Activity: Guide students to read a text about hobbies bringing knowledge and fun, such as "Rock Meets Erhu." Design questions to guide in-depth understanding, e.g., "What hobbies do the characters have?" "How do these hobbies bring them together?"
Students' Activity: Read the text carefully, try to answer the teacher's questions. Discuss text content in groups, sharing understandings and feelings.
Step 5: Grammar Focus (Grammar Emphasis, 10 minutes)
Teacher's Activities:
Explain the usage of "there be" structure and past tense, illustrating with examples from the text.
Design exercises for students to consolidate their understanding of the grammar points.
Students' Activities:
Listen attentively to understand the grammar rules.
Complete the exercises to reinforce their learning.
Participate in group discussions to share problem-solving techniques, correct each other's mistakes, and clarify doubts.
Invite several groups to present their exercise results to the class, with the teacher providing comments and feedback.
Design Intention: To ensure students grasp the correct usage of "there be" structure and past tense through clear explanation and practice. The group discussions and presentations further boost their confidence and foster collaboration.
Step 6: Speaking and Communication (15 minutes)
Teacher's Activities:
Set up a scenario where students act as journalists interviewing classmates about their hobbies and how these hobbies have impacted their lives. Provide interview questions and examples.
Divide students into groups, with each group selecting a "journalist" and several "interviewees."
Circulate around the classroom, offering language support and suggestions, and encouraging students to express themselves boldly.
Students' Activities:
Assign roles within the group and prepare interview content.
Conduct mock interviews, with interviewees sharing their hobbies, experiences, and feelings, and journalists asking appropriate questions and guiding the conversation in English.
Exchange roles between groups for more practice.
Design Intention: To enhance students' oral expression and communication skills by simulating real-life situations, while deepening their understanding of hobbies and their impacts.
Step 7: Writing Task (20 minutes)
Teacher's Activities:
Assign a writing task: "Write a short essay introducing your favorite hobby, including what it is, how you started it, and the joys and benefits it has brought you."
Provide a writing framework and key vocabulary to help students structure and compose their articles.
Encourage students to use "there be" structure and past tense, incorporating personal emotions and experiences.
Students' Activities:
Carefully read the prompt and contemplate the content of their writing.
Begin writing using the provided framework and vocabulary.
After completing the first draft, self-check for grammar and spelling errors.

Preview the content of the next unit, especially focusing on how to describe cultural characteristics of different countries and regions in English.
Find a hobby you are interested in but have not yet tried, and prepare to share it with classmates in the next class.
