三、阅读理解

The nose helps us a lot. It tells us when dinner is almost ready and leads the way to sweet cakes. It also tells us to keep away from bad smells. But do you know the interesting facts about something that smells bad?
Fish
You might have noticed that fish smell unpleasant sometimes. Fish from the ocean smell the strongest. These saltwater fish have a chemical (化学物质) called TMAO. While we prepare fish for cooking, TMAO is already changing into other things. One is called TMA. It smells super smelly. Usually, before cooks make saltwater fish a dish, they wash fish. And most of the TMA can be washed away. Cooks also add lemon to make the fish less smelly.
Feet
Foot sweat (脚汗) itself does not have a bad smell at first. But it has food and water that the bacteria (细菌) need. With them, the bacteria give off some smell. Most shoes often keep sweat in them. That makes shoes and socks warm and wet—a place where bacteria can grow. Different types of bacteria give off different smells. That’s why feet may smell like bad vegetables, smelly eggs or other smelly things.
Eggs
Many things smell terrible when they go bad. But a bad egg gives off the most famous bad smell of all and draws people’s attention. When an egg goes bad, the bacteria help to change the sulfur (硫) in its white part into sulfur and hydrogen (硫化氢). And it smells really bad. The nose just warns us away from it because too much sulfur and hydrogen will harm our health.
36. How does the writer tell readers that something smells bad in the passage?
A. By showing forms. B. By listing numbers.
C. By drawing pictures. D. By giving examples.
37. What can you learn from the passage?
A. Different bacteria produce the same smell.

D. Lemon increases the bad smell of saltwater fish.

Pet parrots that are allowed to make video calls to other birds show signs of feeling less isolated, according to scientists.
The study, which involved giving the birds a computer that they could use to make video calls, found that they began to engage in more social behaviors including preening, singing and playing. The birds were given a choice of which “friend” to call on a touchscreen computer and the study showed that the parrots that called other birds most often were the most popular choices.
Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, of the University of Glasgow and a co-author of the study, said that video calls had helped many people feel less isolated in the last few years. She added, “There are 20 million parrots living in people’s homes in the USA, and we wanted to explore whether those birds might benefit (受益) from video calling too. If we gave them the chance to call other parrots, would they choose to do so, and would the experience benefit the parrots and their caregivers?”
Their study of 18 pet parrots suggested that there were, indeed, benefits for the birds. In the wild, many species of parrots live in large groups, but as pets they are, kept alone or in a small group. Living alone can cause birds, to develop mental problems, which include rocking, walking back and forth, or self-harming behaviors such as feather-plucking.
The parrots first learned to ring a bell and then touch a photo of another bird on the screen of a computer to make a call to that bird, with the help of their owners. In total the birds made 147 calls to each other during the study, while owners took detailed notes on the birds’ behavior and the researchers later reviewed the video footage.
Jennifer Cunha of Northeastern University said that the parrots “seemed to know” that they were communicating with other birds. “All the bird owners in the study said they valued the experience, and would want to continue using the system with their parrots in the future,” she said.
“I was quite surprised at so many different behaviors,” said Hirskyj-Douglas. “Some would sing, some would play around and go upside down, others would want to show another bird their toys.”
39. The main purpose of the study is to find out _________.
A. if parrots can learn to make video calls B. if parrots can benefit from video calling
C. why parrots can have so many benefits D. why parrots can develop mental problems
40. What can we learn about the pet parrots?
A. Their way to communicate is singing. B. Most of them used to live in large groups.
C. The most popular ones made most calls. D. They can make video calls by themselves.
41. Which word has the closest meaning to “isolated”?
A. amazed B. calm C. scared D. lonely

How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of math or enjoy working out number puzzles such as Sudoko. Maths is all around us, from working out how to pay the bill after a meal, to calculating your household bills. But many are afraid the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem frightening, but this “maths anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’re certainly not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety (焦虑) to the students, and girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they got nervous doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University believes giving students, especially girls, good role models is critical, especially at a young age. She thinks the key is to get people, especially women, who love teaching maths to younger children.
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says “It’s not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to geography. Because there’s no room for playing tricks in math tests, it makes you more worried about math. And once we think we’re not a math person, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.”
Psychologists (心理学家) have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic (心算) can bring us out in a sweat. That fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears can loosen their control on you, and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. Most importantly, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
43. What is the author’s understanding of maths anxiety in Paragraph 1?
A. It happens when people have to pay bills after a meal.
B. It actually shows one’s poor performance in maths.
C. Only students often suffer from this sense of worry.
D. People normally have it when dealing with numbers.
44. What may cause students’ maths anxiety according to the research?
A. The particular feature of maths. B. The fear of failure in maths tests.
C. Students’ dislike of learning maths. D. Maths teachers lack of confidence.
45. What can we infer from David Robson’s words?
A. Geography seldom causes worry. B. Slow students have maths worries.
C. Dishonesty is difficult in maths tests. D. Maths students like number puzzles.
46. What is the best way to get over maths anxiety?
A. Speaking out your fears in public. B. Inviting female maths teachers.

I’m rather good at using maps. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, last day of vacation, my daughter, my cousin and I, driving along a two-lane highway in Oregon. No other car in sight, and the sun had just gone down. Where was that sweet little village?
It should be right along this river. We drove on, farther into the unknown, river always at left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and now a few lights were coming out. In my head, I was doing a lot of self-criticisms (自我批评): Why didn’t we start earlier, bring the map and on and on? My cousin and I were both impatient and stressed. My daughter, at least, was happy in the back seat, text messaging a friend. I pulled up on the shoulder of the road to think.
Just then—WOW! Amazing! A new scene had appeared Where did it come from?
Right there out of nowhere, a magical misty landscape. Fields stretched in silent purples, with rows of tall trees, darkening in the dusk (黄昏). I turned the car engine off. All was silent in the hot summer air. Beside us, a plum-colored river hardly moved between a border of trees, its dark lazy water reflecting the last light of day.
How breathtaking! Where had it been? If I had seen even a bit of this beauty while driving along, I could have stopped and taken a look. I had missed it all.
We miss a lot, almost every thing, in fact, in our world. Our task-focused filters (过滤器) take care of that, choose only what we need. We need to get to work. Have some lunch. We see what we need to see, often for purposes of survival. Gregory Bateson, speaking of beauty, said the judgment is selection of a fact. In our daily lives, who or what is doing the selecting? Can we make a change? Can we see further?
47. Which of the following might be the destination (目的地) of the author’s driving?
A. A vacation spot. B. Her own home. C. A tourist centre. D. Her cousin’s farm.
48. What made the author keep criticizing herself in the beginning?
A. That the vacation was below her expectations.
B. That she wasn’t as good at using maps as before.
C. That her cousin and daughter couldn’t get along.
D. That lack of full preparations got her to lose her way.
49. The author felt really surprised because ______.
A. she discovered a tourist spot unknown to the public
B. her carelessness brought an unexpected pleasure
C. she reached what she had planned to.
D. the right route (路线) to her destination came out of nowhere
50. What does the story intend to tell us?
A. Stay cool when you are trapped in trouble. B. Make a change for the purpose of survival.
C. Be positive because there’s always a choice. D. Slow down your paces to enjoy beauty in life.

五、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题1分,满分 20分)
请认真阅读下列短文,根据所读内容在文章后表格中第1-10小题的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
A national survey was carried out in Australia on how children aged eight to sixteen read news. The survey found children as young as eight were interested in news. However, the spread of wrong information makes it difficult for children to understand events. The survey also found only one-third of young people felt they could tell whether news they read was real or not.
Here are what adults can do to help children critically (批判地) think about the news.
To help decide if a source can be trusted they can ask the following questions. Is it clear who created this news? Viewers need to be able to ask the person or organization about why and how they created the story? Does it present facts straight or does it include opinions? If opinions are presented as facts, this may lead to wrong ideas. Does it include all the important people? If a story speaks up for organizations or groups of people, they should have the chance to reply to these opinions.
Some media may make use of people’s feelings. Discussing how children feel about news helps them decide which news programs to watch. Research shows sensationalist (耸人听闻的) news titles can receive more clicks online. Adults can also talk to children why people spread wrong information, such as changing people’s mind on who to vote for or attracting more clicks.
News media talk about events in different ways. Parents and teachers can help children be careful while reading stories. In some stories people can’t present their ideas honestly. In these cases, it’s best to find other news sources to consider how they are reporting the story. Discussing what children think of the news can help build their critical thinking skills.
News that can be trusted is important to societies. People depend on it to help make decisions in lives. Seeing how wrong information is different from real news is a challenge for everyone at present. Listening to children’s experiences is a valuable starting point for improving their critical thinking abilities.
Help Children Think Critically about News

A
The nose helps us a lot.

Amazing! A new scene had appeared. Where did it come from?
Right there, out of nowhere, a magical misty landscape.

To help decide if a source can be trusted, they can ask the following questions.
