It was a mixed year for the world. While there were exciting events, like scientific breakthroughs(突破) in space research, there were also scary events, like terrorist attacks(恐怖袭击), that made the world a difficult place to live in. Here are three issues(事件) that mattered to the world in 2017 and will affect our world for years to come.
Donald Trump's decisions
US President Donald Trump has already made many decisions that have influenced the US and the world since he took office on January 20.
In January, he signed an executive(行政) order banning visitors from seven mainly Muslim(穆斯林) countries, such as Iraq(伊拉克) and Iran(伊朗). He said that this would protect the US from terrorism.
In June, Trump announced that the US would leave the Paris Climate Change Agreement, which was signed in 2015. The US had promised to lower its carbon emissions(碳排放) by 26 percent to 28 per- cent by 2025. Trump argued that the agreement was unfair to the US.
When it comes to China-US relations, there has been some progress. In November, Trum p paid his first visit to China as US president. China-US relations are“ at a new historic(历史性的) starting point”, Chinese President Xi Jinping said at a meeting held between the two leaders on November 9.
Elections in the EU
A wave of elections hit Europe in 2017.
In May, Emmanuel Macron, 39, who had never held elected office and had not been a member of any France's major political parties, was elected as the youngest president of France. He said he was con- fident about putting France back at the heart of the EU.
When it came to the German election in September, the results were less surprising. Angela Merkel,63, who had been German chancellor(总理) for 12 years, won her seat once again. But her party, the Christian Democratic Union(德国基督教民主联盟党), got the lowest percentage of the vote since 1949, when the first national election in post- war Germany was held.
At a time when Europe is trying to deal with years of economic turmoil(混乱), there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.
Terrorist attacks
Violence and terror attacks continued to be a serious issue throughout 2017.
In October, a mass(大规模) shooting happened in Las Vegas, US, where 58 people were killed and more than 500 others injured. It was the largest mass shooting in modern US history,
In May, a deadly terrorist attack happened at a stadium in Manchester, UK, where US singer Ariana Grande had just finished performing. Twenty- two people died and around 120 others were injured. It was the worst terror attack in the UK since 56 people were killed in the London bombings on July 7,2005. The Islamic State(IS, 伊斯兰国) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Luckily, the fight against IS has seen progress during the past year. In November, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that IS is coming to an end. But more efforts are needed to make su re IS doesn't regroup.
