Holiday Nights, Merry and Bright
The season sparkles at four holiday light displays across New York City. Tourists from all over the world are welcome to visit.
LuminoCity Festival
LuminoCity’s large lanterns use environments like the Winter Fantasy. The Wild Adventure features dinosaurs, as well as a small Bifengxia Panda Reserve. My favorite display is in the Sweet Dream environment: a giant waving cat. LuminoCity also offers performances, themed nights and a heated marketplace.
Winter Lantern Festival
This 10-acre site is lit up. The festival attracts tourists not only because of more than 1,200 huge lanterns, but also its location at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden. The festival also has a heated tent, outdoor live performances and a skating area.
Luminaries
Situated in the air y Winter Garden at Brookfield Place, the light equipment is entirely indoors. Every hour on the hour, shoppers and diners can watch digitally programmed light shows. But the equipment’s greatest connection to the holidays is its three wishing stations. Touch one, and your “wish” starts a small light show overhead. This artificial magic does real-world good: For every wish, Brookfield Place will donate $1, up to a total of $25,000, to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a national research nonprofit.
Hello Panda Festival
This 700,000-square-foot event at City Field aims to be a theme park as much as a lantern show. Tents shelter a performance stage with a dance floor, and what may be the festival’s most attractive feature: booths (摊) where artists practice traditional folk arts like paper cutting and sugar painting.
21.What can you do at the LuminoCity Festival?
A.Watch a waving cat display. B.Make your wish come true.
C.Experience the heated tent. D.Create your own lanterns.
22.Which activity best suits people who enjoy Chinese traditional arts?
A.LuminoCity Festival. B.Winter Lantern Festival.

The 36-year-old Jia Juntingxian was born in Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province, and was blind in both eyes due to a serious eye disease. She showed athletic talent since childhood and was selected as a track and field athlete by Jiangxi Disabled Persons’ Federation.
Although she can’t see the world, Jia breaks through the “immediate” obstacles (障碍) again and again while running, letting the world see her. In her sports career, Jia has won 43 national and world-class sports medals. Among them, in 2016, she broke the world record and stood on the podium (领奖台) of the women’s T11-T13 4×100-meter relay event at the Rio Paralympics (残奥会).
In 2017, Jia retired and chose to become a teacher at a special education school. Just a year ago, she found out that two young brothers, with visual impairments (视觉障碍), wanted to be an athlete. They had never attended a special education school and never achieved their athletic dream. Jia could only help them attend a local special education school. The experience made her realize that these children living in remote areas may have little knowledge of special education. Even she didn’t know about such schools until late into her education. As a result, she decided to become more involved with special education.
Changing from a Paralympic competitor to a special education teacher, Jia said that there is no discomfort, “Because I understand the students as well as myself and know the inconveniences and difficulties of the children. I hope that every child is like a different seed. Through hard study, they can bravely realize their own life.”
Jia also has paid close attention to the rights and interests of disabled people. In 2021, Jia proposed the construction of audible traffic signals for blind people. Her advice to local authorities on dog management has resulted in more indoor public places allowing the disabled to enter with their assistance dogs. Jia and her husband founded a massage (按摩) shop and currently employ 16 visually disabled people, with an average monthly salary of 3500 yuan per person.
Jia always believes that the world is a circle, as long as the love of others is constantly passed on, the whole society will be full of love!

A Japanese candy company has been making national news headlines for its idea to produce gummy candy (软糖) that tastes like an “imaginary fruit” called Kiraspika.
Last year was a great one for gummy candy producers, and the market continued to expand throughout 2023, with fruit-flavored (水果味的) gummies being the most popular. There are plenty of fruit flavors to choose from, but companies are still limited to the fruits that can be found in our world. However, what if someone started making candy that tastes like imaginary fruits? That was the strange idea that a Japanese sweets maker recently came up with. Two months ago, the company created a new type of gummy candy that tastes like fruit “Kiraspika no Mi”, an imaginary fruit with an original flavor, design, and even a story.
According to the story, the star-shaped Kiraspika only grows in the mountainous area of Blue Knife, where temperatures drop to —50℃ in winter. It is very difficult to get. Everything about Kiraspika was invented in the fruit lab where its flavor experts mixed various existing flavors to create a totally original one that tastes like nothing you’ve ever eaten.
According to its designers, the Kiraspika-flavored gummy candy has a unique sweetness mixed with a kind of sourness (酸味), but many of those who have tried it have their own description of the taste.
To some, the Kiraspika flavor can be compared to that of an energy drink, while others say it tastes a bit like a spicy apple. It is the mystery of the flavor and the personal explanations that make this product liked by many people.

Protecting marine (海洋的) animals is crucial for the health and balance of our oceans, since they play a vital role in the marine ecosystem, serving as food sources; contributing to nutrient cycling, and maintaining biodiversity. However, human activities such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution pose significant threats to these creatures, so effective conservation measures should be taken to change for the better.
Most people know about the friendly voices of dolphins and the blue songs of humpback whales, but what about the hundreds of thousands of other creatures that live in the sea? Scientists estimate that over 100 types of marine mammals, as well as 1,000 different fish species, generate sounds. Additionally, many sea creatures produce passive sounds while eating, swimming, or crawling along the sea floor. A group of international scientists is now joining forces to create a library of all the unique sounds that animals living under the sea make.
The Global Library of Underwater Biological Sounds, or GLUBS, will be an open-source collection of the signature sounds created by sea creatures. The team will use existing libraries of sea sounds and expand upon these to create a more comprehensive collection. The platform will also include AI algorithms (算法) that can detect and classify different sounds, which will allow scientists to produce species distribution maps.
When asked about the motivation for this project, Miles Parsons, one of the project’s leaders, pointed to the worldwide decline in biodiversity. By examining the sounds coming from bodies of water, scientists can monitor the changes in the distribution and diversity of various ecosystems. Studying the sounds could also be used to identify new species. Parsons explained that many of the world’s most extensive habitats are aquatic (水生的). GLUBS could be a great resource in helping preserve water species around the world.
31.Which of the following is true about sea creature sounds?
A.It is difficult to distinguish eating sounds.
B.Only 1,000 different fish species produce sounds.
C.Little is known about the sounds of marine animals.
D.Scientists don’t have to create sound libraries from zero.
32.How will AI be used in the library?
A.It will be used to create new aquatic sounds.
B.It is needed when scientists distribute maps.
C.It helps manage the number of species in the sea.
D.It can help sort out the different collected sounds.
33.What reason did Miles Parsons give for creating the sound library?
A.Biodiversity is decreasing around the world.
B.It is difficult to record the sound s of sea creatures.
C.We should keep the balance and preserve the ocean.
D.Fishermen could use the sounds to help them catch more fish.
34.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.A scientific research assisted by AI.
B.Sounds Created by the Marine Animals.
C.GLUBS: A Sound Library of the Sea.
D.Sharp decline in global biodiversity.

With the approach of summer vacation, if you ever had a thought that biking might be for you, July might be the perfect month to try it out. Regular biking is beneficial to your mental and physical health. 35 So here are some tips that can guide the new cyclists along.
Prepare essential necessities. You don’t need a ton of equipment to get started. Once you’ve got your bike and helmet, consider how to carry all your belongings. That could be a simple backpack, but it could also be a basket on your bike. 36 In the summer, athletic shorts and a T-shirt are often good choices.
37 Don’t try biking somewhere for the first time when you’re in a hurry or have an important meeting. Bike somewhere closer and low-risk, like a quick run to the store or to a friend's backyard. Work your way up to more farther destinations.
Adopt a relaxed mindset (心态) and seek help. It`s admitted that mentality, of taking it easy, can be extended to the route itself. Try out different routes to find the one you’re most comfortable with. Visit a bike shop to get maps of your city’s bike paths. Ask friends who bikes for suggestions or to ride with you. 38
Use a bike lane if possible. The League of American Bicyxclists says bikers should try to give cars 3 feet of space. But cyclists shouldn’t ride in the gutter (排水沟) to keep their distance. 39 Don’t make drivers try to squeeze (挤压) past you. It’s about maintaining a balance for safety, and that’s not always easy.
A.Start with a short ride.
B.Start with a familiar destination.
C.If the road is too narrow, ride in the middle of the lane.
D.Drivers also play a huge role in keeping a safe distance.
E.Beyond these main items, it’s also key to think about clothes.
F.Believe it or not, people often are glad to share their knowledge.
G.But like any new habit, starting to bike regularly is easier said than done.

Mo and Terry were best friends. Whether they were walking to school, doing homework or just hanging out at the weekend, they were hardly out of each other’s sight. But several weeks ago, Terry started to stay away from Mo, which confused Mo.
This day, they had a physics exam, so Mo was waiting outside her class. She hated physics, because it was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front, then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. Terry didn’t have a problem with physics.
“Hi, Mo. What’s wrong with Terry? I thought you were friends,” said one of her classmates, as Mo arrived.
“Yes, so did I,” said Mo, “but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks. She promised to help me revise for the physics exam, but then she ignored all my calls and texts. And when I rang her house, her mum told me she was busy. She doesn’t remember who her friends are!” said Mo angrily.
The other students were going into the exam room. The exam started. Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting in the next row. Mo was surprised. Terry was holding her phone under the table and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good grades? She felt really angry at Terry but didn’t know what to do. It wasn’t fair! Mo never cheated and she failed lots of exams.
Terry had already put her phone away when Mo looked up again. She looked back at Mo and smiled sadly. Actually, Terry’s family were having a terrible time: her father was in the hospital because of a heart attack. Her father had a big operation today, and Terry was very worried. She couldn’t wait to check her mother’s message on the phone. But Mo knew nothing about it.
The bell rang. “Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Reed, a caring and easygoing teacher who was popular among students. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!
After the test, Mo wanted to talk to Terry, but she couldn’t find her. She was angry with Terry but she didn’t know what to do about Terry. Then, Mo decided to go to the office.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150字左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

M: Don’t forget to get ready for the Christmas festival! Everyone is invited to attend, and your friends and family are welcome, too. We will need some members to help prepare for our yearly event. Please sign up on the sheet of paper by the door if you can help with anything. The list of things to be done includes: buying food, cooking the dinner, making decorations, and cleaning up after the party. We could use at least five people for each of these activities. Also, please give as much money for the festival as you can, so we can buy all the things we need to make this a great event. If every member here today gives twenty dollars, we should have enough. Remember that the money for the Christmas festival does not come out of our normal membership fees. One more thing, each adult who comes to the party must bring a separate gift for a child.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150字左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
“Mr. Reed, I have something to tell you.” Mo whispered.

Knowing the truth, Mo felt guilty.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
“Mr. Reed, I have something to tell you.” Mo whispered. Mr. Reed looked up from the papers. Mo said with anger, “I think Terry might be cheating on the exam. I saw her looking at her phone under the table. I’m sure she was reading answers from it.” Mr. Reed’s eyebrows furrowed in concern. He couldn’t bear anyone cheating, especially the student who he thought was an excellent one. So he let Terry in right away. “Did you use your phone in the exam?” He asked. Taking a glance at Mo, Terry understood what happened, and she took her phone out of the pocket and opened it. To their surprise, Terry cried and explained she was so worried about her father that she couldn’t wait to check the message.
Knowing the truth, Mo felt guilty. She realized that she had jumped to conclusions and hadn’t even tried to understand why Terry had been avoiding her. She realized that true friendship meant supporting each other through tough times, not just sharing happy moments. She decided to apologize to Terry and offer her support. After school, Mo found Terry alone and explained that she had misunderstood. Terry was relieved and grateful for Mo’s understanding. Their friendship was restored, and they learned an important lesson about the value of communication and compassion.
①容忍:bear/stand/tolerate

③向……道歉:apologize to/make an apology to

【点睛】【高分句型1】Taking a glance at Mo, Terry understood what happened, and she took her phone out of the pocket and opened it. (使用了现在分词作状语以及what引导宾语从句)
【高分句型2】She realized that she had jumped to conclusions and hadn’t even tried to understand why Terry had been avoiding her. (使用了that和why引导的宾语从句、不定式作宾语)
