Dear son,
Take a seat, my dear. Daddy wants to share something with you. I would like us to have a heart-to-heart-even though, over the years, you have slowly broken mine. Oh shut up; you so have! If you go out and ask any mother or father out there, I guarantee they’ll say the same thing. It’s just what children always do. In fact, it’s what Daddy’s own mother continues to remind him still, to this very day, every time they speak on the phone.
When you were a little baby, you vomited (呕吐), pooped and peed all over me. In your teen years, you came home from parties and vomited red wine all over my already-dirty carpets. There was a time you even had a go at drugs and all those things I hate. Where does such heartbreak end?
However, I still want you to know you are loved, because various parenting magazines keep telling me that’s my responsibility: to make you feel special and valued and so on. And of course Daddy loves you! Don’t you see? And Daddy values you. Very much so. How could he not value you, when you, as a test-tube baby, cost so much to come into this world?
Now it’s time for you to hear the truth about parenting since you’re old enough. And it’s this: all kids annoy their parents. Like you, I started off adorable. Then I went through my weird-body-shape-and-acne (粉刺) years, lost all my cuteness, developed an attitude and never once did I apologize to my parents for stealing the best years of their lives.
When you become a parent yourself, here are some parenting skills you might want to try that have been passed down from countless generations of angry Asians before me. Passive aggression is always welcome. Regular scream “I wish you had never been born” will help keep your own kid’s self-respect in check. But whatever happens, ensure you earn enough money in your adult life. Then give it to me, so I can go on expensive international tours. If you do this I promise I’ll stop com-plaining and leave you alone, because we both know that’s what we really want.
Love you lots, my cutie pie.
Daddy

In 1838, Charles Darwin faced a problem. Nearing his 30th birthday, he was trying to decide whether to marry. To help make his decision, Darwin made a list of the expected pluses and minuses of marrying.
Darwin is struggling with what I call a wild problem — a fork in the road of life where knowing which path is the right one isn’t obvious. How should we go ahead then, especially if we want to make a rational decision?
As we will see, the cost-benefit list that Darwin constructed is less helpful. He managed to come up with more minuses than pluses. His list — especially of pluses is the list made by who has never been married and has no access to the upside of the inner life of a married man. With many wild problems, the downside is easily imagined, while the upside is hidden from us. That’s one reason wild problems are so hard to tackle with the standard tools of rationality.
Less than a year later, Darwin married and had seven surviving children. Somehow, he managed to become one of the greatest scientists of all time and forever changed our understanding of who we human beings are. What’s the lesson to be learned from his decision-making process?
Life is more than accumulating pleasure or avoid pain. Humans want purpose. We want meaning. We want to belong to something larger than ourselves. The decisions we make in the face of wild problems don’t lead to good days and bad days. They define us. They determine who we are, who we might aspire to become, who we might come to be.
Learn from Darwin. Spend less time trying to figure out the best path to get to where we want to go and spend more time thinking about where we want to go in the first place.
8. How did Darwin decide whether to marry at first?
A. He made a rational decision.
B. He was struggling with a wild problem.
C. He constructed a list of costs and benefits.
D. He came up with more pluses than minuses.
9. What is the author’s attitude towards the standard tools of rationality?
A. Critical. B. Impartial. C. Unconcerned. D. Approval.
10. What does the underlined word “aspire” mean in Paragraph 5?
A. pretend B. manage C. need D. dream
11. What can be learned from Darwin’s lesson?
A. Life has more pleasure than pain.
B It is crucial to figure out our purpose.
C. Life is about good days and bad days.
D. How to best tackle problems defines us.
C 9. A 10. D 11. B

根据文章第一段二、三句“Nearing his 30th birthday, he was trying to decide whether to marry. To help make his decision, Darwin made a list of the expected pluses and minuses of marrying.(快到30岁生日时,他正在考虑是否要结婚。为了帮助他做出决定,达尔文列出了结婚的好处和坏处)”可知,达尔文一开始通过列出一份成本和收益清单来决定是否结婚。故选C项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段最后两句“With many wild problems, the downside is easily imagined, while the upside is hidden from us. That’s one reason wild problems are so hard to tackle with the standard tools of rationality.(对于许多疯狂的问题,消极的一面很容易被想象出来,而积极的一面却被我们隐藏起来。这就是疯狂的问题很难用理性的标准工具来解决的原因之一)”可推知,作者对于理性的标准工具是持批判态度的。故选A项。

Looking at the photos of public celebrations for International Pillow Fight Day in the news and social media from the 50 cities around the world, one question occurred to me: What are pillows really stuffed with? Not physically, but symbolically? Armed with nothing more than bring-our-own sacrificial cushions, strangers struck heavily each other in playful feather from Amsterdam to Atlanta, Warsaw to Washington DC. But why? Is there anything more to this delightful celebration?
As a cultural sign, the pillow is falsely soft. Since at least the 16th century, the humble pillow has been given unexpected meanings. The Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu tells a famous story about a wise man who meets a depressed young scholar at an inn and offers him a magic pillow filled with the most vivid dreams of a seemingly more fulfilling life. When the young man awakens to discover that his happy 50-year dream has in fact come and gone in the short space of an after-noon’s nap, our impression of the pillow’s power shifts from wonder to terror.
Succeeding writers have likewise seized upon the pillow. When the 19th-century English novelist Charlotte Bronte poetically observed “a ruffled (不平的,起皱的) mind makes a restless pillow”, she didn’t just change the expected order of the adjectives and nouns, but instead she made unclear the boundaries between mind and matter — the thing resting and the thing rested upon.
That can be considered as a trick which perhaps Bronte learned from the Renaissance philosopher Montaigne, who once insisted that “ignorance is the softest pillow on which a man can rest his head”. On Montaigne’s thinking, intelligence and happiness confront each other forever in a pillow fight that only one can win.
Based on the words of Tang, Bronte, and Montaigne, we can perhaps more easily measure the attraction of the global pillow fight. Like a ritual of release, the annual international pillow fight amounts to a kind of cleansing, a brushing off of daily worries, an emptying of the world’s collective mind. Rather than a launch-pad for weightless rest, the pillow is a symbol of heavy thought: an anchor that drags the world’s soul down- one that must be lightened.
12. The writer uses the example of Tang Xianzu, wanting to illustrate that ________.
A. dreams are always wonderful while the real world is cruel
B. pillows sometimes bless people with satisfactory dreams
C. people’s impression of pillows changes from wonder to terror
D. pillows symbolically convey the meaning in contrast to their soft appearance
13. From the passage, we can learn that Charlotte Bronte ________.
A. learned a trick from the Renaissance philosopher Montaigne
B. was likely to have been influenced by the thoughts of the Renaissance
C. regarded pillows as reflections of our minds
D. wrote poems about pillows
14. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 “ignorance is the softest pillow on which a man can rest his head” most probably means ________.
A. pillows give us comfort
B. pillows make people more intelligent
C. people with plenty of thoughts have no inner peace
D. people can easily fall asleep when they know little
15. According to the author why is Pillow Fight Day so popular around the world?
A. Because it is a ritual of release. B. Because it makes life delightful.
C. Because it comforts restless minds. D. Because it contains a profound meaning of life.
D 13. C 14. D 15. C
根据第二段“As a cultural sign, the pillow is falsely soft. Since at least the 16th century, the humble pillow has been given unexpected meanings. The Chinese playwright TangXianzu tells a famous story about a wise man who meets a depressed young scholar at an inn and offers him a magic pillow filled with the most vivid dreams of a seemingly more fulfilling life. When the young man awakens to discover that his happy 50-year dream has in fact come and gone in the short space of an afternoon’s nap, our impression of the pillow’s power shifts from wonder to terror.
结合常识和第三段中“When the 19th-century English novelist Charlotte Bronte poetically observed ‘a ruffled (不平的,起皱的) mind makes a restless pillow’, she didn’t just change the expected order of the adjectives and nouns, but instead she made unclear the boundaries between mind and matter — the thing resting and the thing rested upon.
根据划线句子下文“On Montaigne’s thinking, intelligence and happiness confront each other forever in a pillow fight that only one can win.(在蒙田的思想中,智慧和幸福永远是枕头大战,只有一方能赢。)” 划线句“ignorance is the softest pillow on which a man can rest his head”是蒙田坚持的认知,由此推知,这句话的意思是“无知是最柔软的枕头,可以让人高枕无忧”。
根据最后一段的句子“Like a ritual of release, the annual international pillow fight amounts to a kind of cleansing, a brushing off of daily worries, an emptying of the world ‘s collective mind. (一年一度的国际枕头大战就像一种释放的仪式,相当于一种净化,是对日常烦恼的弹除,是对世界集体思想的清空。)”可知,枕头大战日在全世界都很受欢迎是因为它能安抚不安的心灵。故选C项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

【导语】本文是一篇应用文,文章讲述了传染病可能是由通过多种途径进入人体的病原体引起的。文章就此问题提出了一些解决方法和建议。
【16题详解】
根据前文“Research shows that infectious diseases can be caused by pathogens (病原体) that enter the body through a wide range of methods. (研究表明,传染病可能是由通过多种途径进入人体的病原体引起的。)”以及后文应对措施可知,设空处应该属于过渡句,引起下文。D选项“With some healthy habits, you can keep many illnesses at bay.(有了一些健康的习惯,你可以远离许多疾病。)”
同时根据后文“and from there to your eyes and mouth where they can gain access to inside your body.
根据后文“the eyes, the nose and the mouth do allow.( 但眼睛、鼻子和嘴巴允许。)” G选项“Where an undamaged skin does not allow transfer of pathogens into the body(没有损伤的皮肤不允许病原体进入身体,)”符合语境。故选G。
根据前文“Some pathogens can be transferred into your body via food (so called foodborne illnesses).(一些病原体可以通过食物进入你的身体(所谓的食源性疾病)。)” E选项“Once food is consumed and the pathogen gains access to your body(一旦食物被摄入,病原体就会进入你的身体)”符合语境,承接前文。故选E。
根据前文“Talk to your doctor about important vaccinations to get before traveling.(和你的医生谈谈旅行前需要接种的重要疫苗。)” C选项中“This allows you to be more prepared to the native pathogens.(这让你对原生病原体更有准备。)”

故填The。

I quick got up and headed for a bookstore, which was three block away. As I reached the store, I noticed that I had left home without bringing any money. Although I was a little annoying with myself, I could do nothing but return home about the money. Therefore, I run all the way home to fetch the money. After a while, I returned to the store and bought book I wanted it. Imagine what relaxed I was.
1. after→before 2. ask→asked 3. quick→quickly 4. block→blocks 5. annoying→annoyed 6. about→for 7. run→ran 8. 在book前加the 9. 去掉it 10. what→how
It was/will be+时间段+before...“过了……才……”是固定句型,符合句意。故将after改为before。

故去掉it。
故将what改为how。

Dear son,
Take a seat, my dear.
