Nearly a year ago, on a sunny July day, I drove to a nearby lake with my family and friends to have a picnic. I couldn’t wait to get in the water because I loved swimming. “Here I go,” I shouted, laughing, as I dove (跳水) from a boat dock into the lake. That was the last thing I remember. I was unconscious and pulled from the water with a severed spine (脊柱断裂), and paralyzed from the waist down.
After months of hospitalization, I was finally home. But things weren’t going well. I had to face many lifestyle changes. The gray sky outside my window matched how I felt inside. I sighed and turned away. Life had lost all meaning. I was impatient with myself as well as my family.
A few days later, I poured out my despondency to Jerry, a good friend of mine. “I don’t feel like I have a reason to get out of bed,” I told him. Jerry was quiet with his eyes focused on my mulberry tree. “Look,” he whispered. “There’s a cardinal (a kind of bird).” I saw it on that lower branch to the right. Cheer, cheer, cheer, the cardinal sang in a sweet voice. I’d seen cardinals before. Now as I studied this one, I realized I’d never really seen a cardinal. It was beautiful.
As I watched the elegant bird, something clicked (茅塞顿开). The hope of life, like a light, was awakened inside me. After Jerry left, I wheeled to the front of the house, smiled at the sky and felt relieved.
I now take bird watching as my new hobby. I record interesting sightings in my diary and photograph every bird I meet. Besides, I feel a new kind of pleasure when taking care of the potted plants in my yard. Of course, I still face many difficulties every day, but when I look out of my window, I see birds. And when I see birds, I see miracles (奇迹). And I’ve found my place among them.
4. What happened to the author about a year ago?
A. He fell off his boat. B. He had a car accident.
C. He injured his spine in a dive. D. He hardly got along with his family.
5. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “despondency” in Paragraph 3?
A. Doubts. B. Expectations. C. Nervousness. D. Discouragement.
6. How did the author feel after seeing the cardinal outside his window?
A. Pleased. B. Anxious. C. Indifferent. D. Puzzled.
7. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph?
A. He decides to raise birds himself.
B. He becomes hopeful about his life.
C He determines to be a bird photographer.
D. He can deal with all the difficulties by himself.
C
The village super league, or “Cun Chao” in Chinese, is a soccer game among different villages in Rongjiang County, Southwest China’s Guizhou Province, and it is so down-to-earth but popular that it has attracted not only the attention of football legend Michael Owen, but also millions of Chinese netizens (网民), who are paying attention to this non-professional football league.
The players come from a variety of backgrounds. They are vendors, drivers, students, carpenters, tilers, former butchers and brick factory workers. Their ages range from 15 to over 40 years old. At the game site, representatives wearing various traditional national costumes play national musical. instruments and enter the arena (竞技场) with the players, and perform songs and dances.
“This kind of football game is natural and with ‘pureness’ and it is driven by the enthusiasm of the ordinary people not the economic benefits. The game is providing not only values of sports, but also a way of socialising with low costs,” an expert noted. “This kind of atmosphere is very rarely seen and is treasured, especially for people in urban areas who are getting increasingly busy and under great work pressure, and when they look at the fun, relaxing and down-to-earth way of life in the countryside, they will naturally be interested,” experts said. There is at least one good impact brought by “Cun Chao” to Chinese soccer—to make more people see the pureness of joy brought by the sport and encourage them to play soccer.
Today, more and more grassroots sports events are held in the mountains and are using sports as a medium to showcase the unique charm of the local area, reflecting a vibrant lifestyle filled with agricultural activities and rural fun.

D. To prove the great popularity of “Cun Chao”.
9. What do we know about the players of “Cun Chao”?
A. They are from all walks of life.
B. Seniors are welcome to join the team.
C. Most of them are capable of playing national musical instruments.
D. They wear traditional costumes on the soccer field when competing.
10. What does “Cun Chao” influence Chinese soccer according to Paragraph 3?
A. To build more arena s in the countryside.
B. To help people know more about soccer.
C. To encourage more people to play soccer.
D. To make Chinese soccer known around the world.
11. What is the author’s attitude to sports events held in mountains?
A. Doubtful. B. Favourable. C. Ashamed. D. Negative.
D
Animals might not be able to speak or master advanced language techniques, but they certainly have other ways of communicating. Whale song, wolf howls, frog cries — even the fast dance of the honeybee or the friendly waves of a dog’s tail — are among so many ways animals pass on information to each other and to other living things of the animal kingdom.
When it comes to hearing communication, not every member of a species is just alike. Animals in different places have often been sounding off in different dialects. For example, one study shows that blue whales produce different types of sounds depending on where they are from. Some bird species are the same way. And what about those birds that live on the border between territories (领地) of different songbirds? They are often able to communicate in a way accepted by each of their groups of neighbors.
Communication between different species can play important roles as well. One study shows that iguanas (鬣蜥蜴) do not communicate by making sound, but their well-developed ears help them hear well the warning calls of the flycatcher (a type of small bird). The two species have nothing in common except for the fact that they share a general habitat and enemies. So when an iguana hears a bird make a signal of danger for other birds, it probably knows to be watchful for arriving enemies, too.
However, as noise pollution has become a serious problem all across the globe, many animals are now under fire. Increased shipping traffic over the last century has greatly affected the spread of whale song around the ocean basin. Studies have found that songbirds, too, suffer from noisy city surroundings. Some species have had to change their singing styles, producing songs that sound louder, in order to be heard above the noise. Their new voices usually lead to stranger and somewhat worse styles of singing that female birds find decidedly less sexy.
12. What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraph 2?
A. Various dialects can also happen to the same animals.
B. Animals communicate with each other in different ways.
C. Different animals have different ways of communicating.
D. Animals from different places may make the same sound.
13. What can we learn about iguanas?
A. They communicate by singing. B. They are born with poor hearing.
C. They often bring bad luck to humans. D. They get along well with flycatchers.
14. By saying “many animals are now under fire”, the author means ________.
A. they refuse to communicate with others
B. they cannot communicate effectively
C. they are now in danger of dying out
D. they don’t make a sound any more
15. The author develops the passage mainly ________.
A. by raising questions B. by following time order
C. by providing examples D. by analyzing the data

I adore poetry-I still remember early lessons on haikus back in my Grade Three classroom. Poetry can be amazing. Here's three ways to bring poetry into your classroom.
Combine poetry and art
Poems often use a few words to create pictures so they're perfect to combine with art. ____16____ Students can write a poem inspired by a piece of art or create a piece of art inspired by a poem, which can be especially effective when you're looking at particular styles of art-abstract art or sculpture.
____17____ They can look at how poetry can be a part of public art or how words, color and shapes can be combined to create something beautiful.
Create poetry displays
Due to their shorter size, poems make wonderful subject for displays. There are a few ways you can display poetry in the classroom. For instance, if you write or explore poems on a particular theme, you can use that to create a display. Autumn poetry can be displayed on colorful trees made out of paper. ____18____
Students can also use a display board to create their own poetry. ____19____ They can also write lines of poetry to pin up on a board to continue a poem which is being written.
Explore poetry in song
Poetry and songs are two different forms of writing. ____20____ They both use rhyme, rhythm and highly effective word choice to make you feel something. Students can also think about how already written songs could be set to music.
Take a moment to share some poetry with your students and open up a whole world of different rhythms, rhymes and pictures made out of words.

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear!

【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了动物之间也会交流,不管是同一种类动物内部还是不同种类动物之间都可能存在交流。
【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段前两句“When it comes to hearing communication, not every member of a species is just alike. Animals in different places have often been sounding off in different dialects.(当谈到听觉交流时,并不是每个物种的成员都是一样的。不同地方的动物常常用不同的方言发声。)”可知,作者在第二段主要告诉我们,不同的方言也可能发生在同一种动物身上。故选A。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“One study shows that iguanas (鬣蜥蜴) do not communicate by making sound, but their well-developed ears help them hear well the warning calls of the flycatcher (a type of small bird). The two species have nothing in common except for the fact that they share a general habitat and enemies.(一项研究表明,鬣蜥不通过发出声音来交流,但它们发育良好的耳朵帮助它们很好地听到捕蝇鸟(一种小鸟)的警告叫声。这两个物种除了有共同的栖息地和敌人外,没有任何共同之处。)”可推断,鬣蜥蜴和捕蝇鸟有共同天敌,能相处融洽。故选D。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“However, as noise pollution has become a serious problem all across the globe(然而,随着噪音污染在全球范围内成为一个严重的问题)”以及下文所举例子“Increased shipping traffic over the last century has greatly affected the spread of whale song around the ocean basin.(在过去的一个世纪里,航运的增加极大地影响了鲸鱼之歌在海洋盆地周围的传播。)”可知,噪音污染已经严重影响了动物之间有效的交流。所以划线句子“many animals are now under fire”意为“它们无法有效交流”之意。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Whale song, wolf howls, frog cries — even the fast dance of the honeybee or the friendly waves of a dog’s tail — are among so many ways animals pass on information to each other and to other living things of the animal kingdom.(鲸鱼的歌声,狼的嚎叫,青蛙的叫声——甚至蜜蜂的快速舞蹈或狗尾巴友好的摆动——都是动物相互传递信息和动物王国其他生物的众多方式之一。)”,第二段“For example, one study shows that blue whales produce different types of sounds depending on where they are from.(例如,一项研究表明,蓝鲸发出不同类型的声音取决于它们来自哪里。)”,第三段“One study shows that iguanas (鬣蜥蜴) do not communicate by making sound, but their well-developed ears help them hear well the warning calls of the flycatcher (a type of small bird).(一项研究表明,鬣蜥蜴不通过发出声音来交流,但它们发育良好的耳朵帮助它们很好地听到捕蝇鸟(一种小鸟)的警告叫声。)”和最后一段“Increased shipping traffic over the last century has greatly affected the spread of whale song around the ocean basin. Studies have found that songbirds, too, suffer from noisy city surroundings.(在过去的一个世纪里,航运的增加极大地影响了鲸鱼之歌在海洋盆地周围的传播。研究发现,鸣禽也会受到城市嘈杂环境的影响。)”可知,每一段都举了例子,因此作者主要通过举例来展开文章,故选C。

【答案】范文:
How to be a wise smartphone user
Hello, everyone! I feel greatly honored to talk about how to be a wise smartphone user.
Smartphones, undeniably, have revolutionized our lives. They keep us connected with loved ones, provide instant access to vast knowledge, and entertain us in countless ways. Yet, to use their full potential wisely, we must adopt healthy habits.
Firstly, limit your screen time to ensure you have ample time for face-to-face interactions, exercise, and leisure activities. Secondly, prioritize productivity over procrastination. Use apps that boost your learning, not as shortcuts to skip homework. Resist the temptation to search for answers online without attempting to solve problems yourself.
Remember, smartphones are tools, not masters. We should use them to enhance our lives rather than discourage us from progress.
Thanks for your listening!

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
