Thomas was a well-known wise man. One day, he wandered in a beautiful small town. Because of his fame, people from nearby towns who heard of his arrival all came to visit and seek his advice.
Many who came sought help with difficulties in daily life, and Thomas, unable to bear turning them away, patiently offered suggestions. Word spread quickly, and more and more people came to see Thomas for guidance.
One day, dozens of people crowded outside Thomas’s door, all clamoring (大声地要求) that their problems were the most serious and urgent, each insisting that Thomas address their concerns first, with no one willing to yield (让步).
After a moment of thought, Thomas took out some paper and a pen and said, “I can’t hear clearly with everyone talking at once. How about everyone write down your problem on a piece of paper and place it in this basket beside me?”
Once everyone had placed their notes in the basket, Thomas shook the basket and said, “Please each take a piece of paper from the basket and read what it says.”
As everyone read a note from someone else, they all realized that indeed, each person has their own troubles, and every household has its own challenges. Then Thomas spoke up, “Now, whose problem is the most urgent to solve?” Hearing that question, no one spoke again, because now no one dared to claim that their problem was the most severe.
Often, we are bound by our immediate feelings. When difficulties and problems strike, it feels as though we are caught in a vortex of pain. But if we shift our focus from ourselves and look towards others, we might discover that the problems we face are not so significant. Perhaps others are the ones who need help more urgently, or maybe there is something within our power that we can do for them.
4. Why did people visit Thomas?
A. For advice. B. For a meeting.
C. For a competition. D. For introductions.

6. What did reading others’ problems show to the people?
A. The complexity of their difficulties. B. The similarity of their situations.
C. Their need for more advice. D. Their living conditions.
7 What lesson did Thomas teach?
A. Competition. B. Sympathy. C. Prioritization. D. Self-confidence.

Swedish Midsommar, also known as Midsummer, is a beloved holiday in Sweden that marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. This usually takes place around mid-June in the Northern Hemisphere.
With Midsummer being the longest day of the year, it was often considered a magical night to the agricultural society within Sweden. Full of mystery and enchantment (魅力) it’s believed to be a time when plants gained healing powers and were used to predict the future. Today, it is more about celebrating the beginning of summer and the good times ahead.
Like all major holidays, Midsummer focuses on sharing food and drinks with loved ones. Traditional Swedish dishes you’ll find on a Midsummer table include herring in all forms served with chives and sour cream, boiled new potatoes with fresh dill, cured salmon, rustic breads, potato dumplings, meatballs, and a dessert involving strawberries.
Everyone has their own Midsummer traditions, but many stick to the more traditional options when it comes to celebrating. For a grand Midsummer lunch-party, no celebration would be complete without dancing with flowers in your hair, singing songs, while feasting on a delicious selection of Swedish dishes. Another form of celebrating Midsummer was the raising of a pole which was then danced around. This lovely tradition is still very much a part of Midsummer celebrations with the maypole decorated in garlands of leaves and fresh flowers.
At the heart of Swedish Midsummer lies the spirit of togetherness and human connection. Families, friends, and communities gather in joyful union, creating a shared experience that goes beyond individual boundaries. The dances around the maypole, the laughter, and the heartfelt conversations produce a sense of belonging and interdependence. Midsummer reminds us of the fundamental need for social bonds and the fulfillment gained from genuine human interaction. It serves as a reminder that in the complexities of modern life, the simplest connections can bring us deep joy and fulfillment.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
It was a bitterly cold and dark day in December. I was walking home from work, hungry and worn out after my long day. My team was due to complete our big project before we left for our winter vacation, but our boss delivered bad news that our client had contacted him and demanded a major revision on the project before they would accept it. The whole team was desperate—we were so close to finishing and now we would most likely have to work over and miss the entire vacation.
So caught up in my anxious thoughts was I that I failed to watch where I was walking until I stepped, with a dramatic splash (溅起), off the sidewalk and into a giant, half-frozen pool of water at the side of the road. I could feel the icy water into my shoes and socks, slowly soaking up into my trousers legs around my ankles. I sighed deeply and almost cried—I was having, as my grandmother always used to say, “one of those days when nothing goes your way.”
A wave of loneliness filled me. I loved my job and my coworkers and most days when I was satisfied with my life but now, especially around the holidays, the reminders that I didn’t have a partner or children like my sister or some of my coworkers did fill me with sadness. As I looked down sadly at my unpleasant situation, I saw a brief spot of movement out of the corner of my eye. There, attached to a cold piece of cardboard in the middle of the pool, was a small patch of grey fur.
As I watched, the little spot moved again, before letting out an outsized cry of sorrow and grief, so loud was it that you would think it came from a creature five times the size. It was a cat!
Paragraph 1:
Slowly and carefully so as not to frighten it, I bent down and picked up the cat.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
My sister is a nurse, and therefore the family expert on caring for animals.

【答案】范文:
How to be a wise smartphone user
Hello, everyone! I feel greatly honored to talk about how to be a wise smartphone user.
Smartphones undeniably, have revolutionized our lives. They keep us connected with loved ones, provide instant access to vast knowledge, and entertain us in countless ways. Yet, to use their full potential wisely, we must adopt healthy habits.
Firstly, limit your screen time to ensure you have ample time for face-to-face interactions, exercise, and leisure activities. Secondly, prioritize productivity over procrastination. Use apps that boost your learning, not as shortcuts to skip homework. Resist the temptation to search for answers online without attempting to solve problems yourself.
Remember, smartphones are tools, not masters. We should use them to enhance our lives rather than discourage us from progress.
Thanks for your listening!

Paragraph 2:
My sister is a nurse, and therefore the family expert on caring for animals.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Slowly and carefully so as not to frighten it, I bent down and picked up the cat. The cat protested loudly as I lifted it into the air, twisting and biting at my fingers with surprising strength. I was glad to see that it was so energetic—I hoped that meant it would be more likely to survive. Ignoring the kitten’s protests, I carefully tucked it against my chest inside my coat to try and keep it warm. My ignorance made me anxious—I didn’t know what I was doing and I didn’t want to harm the poor creature. But, after another cry of protest, the cat became calm and went to sleep.
Paragraph 2:
My sister is a nurse, and therefore the family expert on caring for animals. I hurried to call and ask for her advice. She calmly and efficiently told me what to do as I hurried home, stopping briefly at a corner store to buy some supplies she insisted I would need. When I finally reached my apartment, I dried the soaked cat and fed it the food I had bought. The cat still looked at me with great suspicion, but the food seemed to be winning it over. As the cat once more fell asleep, now happy and warm, I smiled. After all perhaps I would not have a lonely vacation this year.
