Help! I’m a 15-year-old middle school student in New York. In eight
months, I’m going to take an entrance exam. To prepare for it, I’m
studying six hours a day. I want to do well, but I’m really stressed(焦

Dear Mary,
Many students around the world have the same problems as you. Here
is some advice to help you deal with the stress. Good luck!
①Make a study plan for yourself, but don’t study too much in one
day. You remember more by studying one hour each day for six days
than six hours in one day. Also, don’t study late at night.
②Have a rest for 15 to 20 minutes every two hours. Go outside and
walk. Doing exercise is a great way to reduce stress.

③Don’t eat or drink a lot of sugar or drink a lot of coffee. Eat food high
in vitamin(维生素)B (for example, eggs, milk, green vegetables
and rice). These give you energy and help you think more clearly.
④A student partner can help you practice for the test. When you’re
worried about the exam, you can talk to your partner. It can also
reduce stress.

However, a common problem is that people learn new words and
then forget them.So when you want to use a new word in a
conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment.Does this happen
to you often? The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to
learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and memorising the
words. But this may not work if you don’t have a very good memory.

The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words
successfully is to learn new words and use them immediately. You can do
this with a very simple exercise.Every time you learn a new word, for
example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your
vocabulary notebook. You should write down the word, the definition in
English or translation, an example sentence from the article or
dictionary, and an example sentence that you create.

example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal
shelter on weekends. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your

Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the
progress of(or possibly even prevent) mental illnesses, since keeping
your brain active prevents it from losing power. Just like any other
muscle(肌肉) in the body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong
and healthy, so the phrase “use it or lose it” especially fits when it
comes to your mind. Doing puzzles(谜) and playing games such as chess
have also been found to be helpful.

new memory you create is helpful for recalling. How cool is that?

Knowing you could be wrong can lead you to learn more
accurate(精确的) knowledge. But does it also help you beyond that? To
find out more, Tenelle Porter of Ball State University asked 103 high-
school students to answer some questions, and started studying
“mastery behaviors(控制行为)” — skills that students can use to
master their material.

Students who didn’t see that their knowledge could be wrong might
just not study as hard as they should be. They won’t stop to ask
themselves if they truly understand what they read, heard or did. They
think they’ve got a subject down pat. But when they’re asked to explain
it on a test, they don’t really understand as much as they thought that
they did.
Students who knew their beliefs could be wrong used skills that

Porter gave them the same questions as before to see how much they
questioned their beliefs. Four months later, after their teacher had
graded(打分) a test, Porter passed out other questions to see how the

and try again” in some mindless way, they would be taking an honest
look at what they’d done wrong and try to find out how to avoid(避免)

Porter says. “But really, the only way to get better is by persisting and

Scott, 15.
If you are a slow learner, you may fall behind when you study at
school. But if you have classes at home, you can learn well by taking
notes carefully while watching the study video. When I’m having classes
at home, I am more independent than at school. I can solve problems
by myself when I am at home.

What can you do to improve your online studies?
To successfully learn online, you can follow these steps. First of
all, you should always keep in mind what you hope to complete by the
end of it. Then a study plan is needed. A good study plan includes a study
calendar and a to-do list. Next, when having a class, be active in
thinking about what the teacher says and express yourself. After class,
remember to review what you have learned by reading your notes or
making a mind map.

Two years ago, our new English teacher showed some English
cartoons in class. They were interesting and touching. I became
interested in the stories and the characters, so I tried my best to
understand them. It made me fall in love with learning English. My
pronunciation also improved by listening to the conversations in English
movies. What’s more, I found it easy to remember the words by
reading English stories. Now I’m not afraid of making mistakes. Also,
keeping a diary in English is also a good idea.
