(2024·广东广州·二模)It was a week after my mom had passed away and I didn’t know how to go on with life. So when I received an email from a friend about a race which could benefit cancer research, Iignored (忽略) it. It seemed to hurt my feelings, as cancer was the disease that had taken my mother away from me.
But something about my friend’s words— “I can help organize the whole thing”—stuck with me. I felt obliged (有义务的) to agree. In the weeks to come, I managed to re-enter the world of the living. I checked our team's website daily, feeling proud each time a donation came in. I knew my mom would have wanted it that way. She was the type who never got beaten by difficulties. It was this very spirit that helped me get by.
When the race ended, I noticed the runners all had one thing in common: There were big smiles on their faces. They made it look so rewarding and effortless. I wanted in.
So I signed up for another race two months later. Considering I could hardly run a mile, it was a challenging task. But my friend and I made a training plan so I wouldn’t come in last.I followed it and didn’t let anything get in my way.
Running up and down the city’s hills, I was flooded with memories. I had lived there after college and my mother had visited often. I passed Bloomingdale’s, recalling the time she and I had gotten into a screaming argument there.
I was about to beat myself up when I remembered what Mom had said after her diagnosis (诊断) of cancer. “I don’t want you to feel sorry for anything.” Her paper-thin hands had held me tightly. A weight was lifted from my shoulders.
When the race day arrived, I gave it my all for my mom and for all she had taught me and continued to teach me. As I ran, whenever I felt like slowing down, I pictured her cheering me on. Crossing the finish line, I was filled with her love and a sense of peace.

Lily’s disappointment was surely clear. She woke up on Christmas morning and, along with her brother, ran down to see the gifts under the tree.
In the living room sat a nice mini bike. For a short moment, Lily was filled with great excitement. She couldn’t imagine anything better than getting that bike. Then, she saw a baby doll sitting on the sofa.
Then she knew. She knew that the mini bike belonged to her brother and that doll would be hers. It was always like this. Tommy always got cool things: skateboards, science kits. The mini bike was just the latest cool thing. Lily always got the boring gifts: a set of toy cooking kits, a pair of fairy lady’s feather wings. They were amazing for other girls, but she didn’t like them at all. To Lily, this doll seemed unusually boring again.
Tommy had seen that mini-bike in the front window of Moore’s Bike Shop, but hadn’t Lily too? Tommy had asked for the bike and had said it was the only thing he wanted for Christmas. Although Lily had the same thought, she failed to say it, again. She was a shy girl, even in front of her family.
Tommy’s eyes grew wide at the bike. He knew it was his—no doll for him. He ran into his parents’ room and jumped up and down on the bed, “Thank you, Dad! Thank you, mum!”
At the same time Lily walked into the other room silently. She was disappointed and a bit angry. It took a while for anyone to realize she was missing.
“What’s wrong, Lily?” Papa asked gently. “Did you see your pretty doll?” “I saw it,” she said unhappily.
“What’s wrong, honey? You won’t believe how long your father waited in line to buy that doll! It was nearly 30 minutes.” Mama said.
Silence. Lily’s mouth was fixed. Her face was pale. “Oh, Mama, you know Lily is never excited by presents!” her brother laughed. “Come out and watch me ride!”
And so they did.
However, Lily made a decision after a while. She needed to speak out what she really thought. Then, she took a deep breath, walked straightly outside…

For example, I am never allowed to use the mobile phone because they want me to pay full attention to my study. 79.
根据上文“‘I won’t start right away.’ He chose to let the wood dry for a month”和“Unlike my grandfather”可知,这个家具制作商和作者的祖父不同,作者的祖父选择等待,而他应是立刻开始制作。故选A。
carrying out执行;giving up放弃;putting off推迟;going on继续。根据上文“‘I won’t start right away.’ He chose to let the wood dry for a month”可知,祖父没有立刻开始工作,于是被认为是在推迟工作。故选C。

根据上文“My grandfather often said ‘I won’t’ to show his dislike of being dishonest”可知,对不诚实说“我不会”是祖父的价值观,此处指父亲也遵循同样的价值观。故选D。
根据“Now, my brother and I…in mind what our grandfather and father taught us”可知,此处表示“牢记长辈教的东西”,用keep in mind“牢记”。故选A。

Dear Dave,
I am so glad to receive your letter. And I am sorry that you can’t get on well with your parents. I would like to tell you something about my experience.
I also have the similar problems to yours. At school I am good at maths and Chinese, while I find physics difficult to learn. But my parents think I should do best in every subject. Besides, they don’t respect me at all. They often read my diary. So we often have quarrels with each other. Later, I talked with my parents and expressed my feelings to them. Life shouldn’t just be about grades. I respect my parents, and I hope they can respect me. Now I get along well with my parents.
So when you meet something difficult, you should talk about it with your parents. You should actively explore ways to get along with your parents. Please be happy and everything will be better.
Yours,
Lin Tao

Dear Amanda,
I am sorry to hear that you have trouble in communicating with your parents. I can totally understand how upset you are right now as I had the similar problem like you before. Here are some useful tips.
If your parents are too strict about your schoolwork and you feel feel quite uncomfortable, you should tell your parents your true feeling first. You are supposed to tell them that you feel stressed when being controlled too much. Additionally, in order to make your parents believe in you, it is a good idea to make some rules about using the mobile phone properly. Last but not least, it is no good quarreling with you parents all the time. Why not put yourself into your parents’ shoes when you are angry next time?

例文
Recently, news about the conflicts between parents and children frequently appear on the media. Why are the relationship between parents and children becoming so serious? It’s my pleasure to share my opinions with you.
For one thing, they are lack of communication, so it’s of great importance for parents to create more chances to talk with their children so that they can understand each other better. For another, because parents are always strict with their children and expect too much from them, it will cause misunderstanding between them. Therefore, it’s necessary for parents to build up friendly and close relationship with their kids before expressing their expectations. Besides, parents’ bad habits will influence their children badly. Thus, setting good examples for children is helpful to gradually develop their good habits. Last but not least, many parents are so busy at work that they don’t have time to spend with their children. So it’s vital for parents to spare more time for their children to build up close relationship.
In short, to solve the problems, love and communication are of great significance.
